Rate this book
Danielle Gardens, a twenty-four-year-old artist from Brandsend, Texas, has the ability to lucidly dream. After falling asleep, she often revisits a small park petrified in a perpetual autumn. Once, the shelter of her peaceful park allowed her to reflect on the mistakes of her past in her true life. Specifically, those she made with her first love Caleb Walker. However, now Caleb seems to be appearing more often than usual, carrying all her painful memories with him. Including, how leaving him led to an abusive relationship with a man named, Eric.
As another seemingly normal dream begins, she and Caleb notice a rip in the sky of her perfect world. Emboldened by her knowledge that it's all just a dream, Danielle decided to travel through the opening and discovers a wonder British soldier, Fletcher Lewis Knight, trapped within a PTSD-driven nightmare. Fletcher's mental demons manifest as preying dragons, laying in wait on the fringes of his dream under a blood-red sky and viridescent moon--a twisted picture of the last moments he can recall.
Danielle, troubled by what she has seen, vows to find a way to stop the nightmares and teach Fletcher to protect himself by ludicdly dreaming.

This book is a beautifully woven narrative of enduring difficult relationships, and the thought processes that lead us down the twisted paths we take to convince ourselves to stay. It bridges the gap between the relationship(s) we regret, and the One that made us realize we deserved true love all along. It’s captivating, and full of angst, and humor, and sweetness, and hope. If you love the kind of love story that pulls all of your heartstrings, and makes your heart melt at the same time, this is the story for you. A stellar debut, and I can’t wait for more from this author in the future!
*Absolutely make sure you read the Author’s Note when you get to the end. It’s the kind WORTH reading!

This is SO different from anything I've read.

It's deep, it's thought-provoking, it's heartbreaking. In all the best ways.

And the author's note... H, seriously. You're incredible.

What the heck was that!!! It was good, don’t get me wrong, but that cliffhanger was diabolical!

Overall I really liked the story, and am super excited for the next book to come out.

There were a few scenes towards the beginning of the book that I was confused about, mostly when a bunch of British people were talking to each other. I can’t tell if it was an American trying to write in British slang that was confusing, or if the scene felt a little clunky. This was quickly overlooked by the beautiful storytelling of this author. I loved the stories about Fletchers brothers in arms, and I hope we get a resolution for the soldier (and his dog) who is MIA.

This story talked about overcoming trauma in a beautiful way, and I appreciate the author taking such a heavy topic seriously.

This was such an intriguing read! The storyline kept me hooked, and the character development was incredible. The portrayal of PTSD was raw and authentic, making it easy to connect with the two main characters.

The only downside for me was the epilogue—it felt unnecessary to apologize for having white characters in the story. I loathe that it was put in there because it was basically irrelevant. A well-written book like this can resonate with anyone, regardless of the characters’ backgrounds, race or ethnicity.

That aside, it was an emotional, gripping read, and I’d definitely recommend it!

It's hard to believe this is a debut novel, because it has some of the most beautiful, intricate writing I have read in years. Part of this book affected me so deeply, I actually had to set it aside temporarily so I could process it. I absolutely recommend it.

SPOILERS BELOW

The author's choice to give side characters their own PoV chapters as a stand in for dialogue of the male main character telling the female main character about them was truly inspired. In doing so, she succeeded in making the readers themselves mourn their loss, rather than just tell us we should.

I love H.D. Jones as someone who has interacted with her on TikTok and I was so excited about this but the book kinda fell a little flat for me. I love the concept and everything about it but the was just okay. It was a struggle for me to finish this and didn’t help at all to get me out of my book slump.
