Toate acestea se petrec sub ochii nostri, pe strazile noastre, in barurile noastre, in parcarile oraselor noastre. Oficial, autoritatile, reprezentantii legii, politicienii se plang. In realitate, procesele intentate traficantilor de carne vie sunt rarisime. Daca nu le-as ajuta eu, cine sa o faca?“ - Iana Matei
Iana Matei is a Romanian activist who founded Reaching Out Romania, an organization to find and rehabilitate victims of forced prostitution. Reaching Out Romania operates the House of Treasure, a shelter for former victims of human trafficking.
On January 20, 2010, Matei was named "European of the Year" by Reader's Digest for this work.
Iana Matei's book was first published in 2010 by OH ! Editions, in France under the title "A vendre, Mariana, 15 ans".
Matei was born in Orăștie. Her mother was a talented pentathlete, father was a football coach. When Iana was three, her family moved to Bucharest due to her father's work, and later, to an industrial city Pitești.
Her father was an atheist, because he "found it hard to believe in a God, that lets children in Africa die of starvation". Her mother was an Orthodox.
Matei has a talent for languages and speaks at least four — her native Romanian, Serbian, English and French, and thus can be considered a polyglot. She studied wall painting and met her husband Dmitri while renewing Ghica Tei palace, who she married and had her firstborn son Ștefan with. Later Matei divorced Dmitri due to him abusing alcohol and being violent.
Matei lived during the period of Soviet occupation, and in 1989, when Romanian Revolution started, participated in riots and protests against the Communist government. After Matei lost her handbag with her documents in University Square during the protests, she believed that it was no longer safe to stay in the country and had to leave. She left her son with her mother and illegally traveled to Serbia, was captured and sentenced for twenty days imprisonment. Matei went on a hunger strike insisting that a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCP) visit her and acknowledge her presence. After her sentence, Iana was taken to a Serbian refugee camp, where she was hired as a translator for UNHCP, with her son brought to her from Romania and moved to Australia, where she lived up until she became involved with humanitarian work.
Humanitarian Work[edit] Matei was studying psychology and, in order to get a diploma, had to write scholarly work. She chose stray children as her topic, found some in the streets and talked to them. At first, out of pity, she gave them a few sandwiches, but the next Saturday, she came back with pasta and fed about fifteen people. This kept going on for few months and extended to much more than just a social experiment. In 1994, Matei found "Reaching Out", an organisation that helps street kids in Australia.
When Matei went to Romania to visit her ill mother, she faced the same problem as she did in Australia. She spent some time in Europe and went back to Australia, still thinking about forgotten children of Romania. In 1998, Iana and her son returned to Pitești and got involved with homeless children.
In 1999, Matei faced the horror of human trafficking for the first time, when local policemen contacted her, asking to bring some clothes for prostitutes they arrested. Matei brought food and clothes for the girls, only to realise they were all underage, sold like animals and forced to be prostitutes. Matei started raging because of the ignorance of policemen, who refused to acknowledge the fact that three girls were underage victims of human trafficking. Matei registered her new, non-governmental organisation "Reaching Out", opened her shelter "The House of Treasure" and has been fighting sex slavery since.
As recomanda-o in programa de liceu, chiar!
One women's fight to save the world, or at least to change Romania! This book is written by an amzing woman who sacrificed her life to help victims of huma trafficking. She created a 'crisis' center for women who were forced to prostitute themselves from their early teenage age. Iana Matei describes her daily battles with mafia, pimps, romanian police and justice system, corruption, unhumane treatement of people and with the sex trafficking victims who don't even know how to live a normal life- without fear, violence, abuse... Page by page I was more and more amazed with her patience and strong-willingness in helping others and forgetting about herself. I was shocked to learn about Romania's broken system and mentality. Iana Matei has written this book with her heart but also she has structured it well and explained many problems and issues. Due to the books topic- it is not an easy read, but it certainly an important one that opens eyes of people who think that there is no slavery in 21st century or that it is girls own choice to prostitute herself.
I really enjoy books which are written about real events. So I didn't thought twice before taking this book from library and I don't regret that. First of all, this books is well written, easy an fast to read, so it took very little time to finished it. Also, this story opened my eyes more. Until I read this book I didn't knew much about prostitution and exploitation of women. I think people should know more about this topic, because it's really important topic. Not all girls choose this kind of lifestyle. Some of them actually need help to get out of this unpleasant work and company. Young girls and women are being abused physically and mentally every day and we should do something about. Maybe one person can't change much, but group of us can.

❌Tačiau 4⭐ vien dėl to, jog man pritrūko gilumo prostitučių pasakojimuose. Man norėjosi daugiau faktų, daugiau istorijų, daugiau, daugiau, daugiau.
Loved it! The writer is giving a very deep insight, based on over a decade of experience, on how the forced prostituion of minor and adult women work, especially in Romania, but not only. This very deep insight is given from various perspectives: historical background of humans for sale in Romania and on the Balkan peninsula, mass-media POV, how the legislation and the court, and other institutions treat these cases, especially the victims. Couldn't stop reading it. Be careful, contains stories and information that might require your emotional resilience.

The author seems like a great woman: what she did and maybe is still doing for these girls is amazing, so, you know, 5 stars for that. But the book itself is badly written, is has a chaotic structure and many ideas are started and never finished, so 0 stars for that. Good thing it was a fast read and I didn't waste too much time on it. And what kind of bothered me most is that she goes through all this trouble to give these pour girls the best living conditions she can, but she leaves her own mother in a smelly old retirement home and just complains about the conditions there and that she doesn't have time to visit her. I mean, find her something nicer, she deserves it. All in all, rounding it down to 2 stars.
Nu-i cazul.
Wonderful book! I couldn't stop reading. There are happening such a horrible and tragic crimes just under our noses. Iana Matei proves that even one person can do a great change. Such a inspirational woman! BTW, she has a website about her current projects with possibility to donate.
Very well explained book about (child) prostitution, slave trade, corruption, ignorance of political people.. Must read for everybody who wants to know the real deal about prostitution.
