"AFTER THE LAST OF THEM DEPARTED, THERE FOLLOWED A DEATHLY QUIET, AN UNPRECEDENTED STILLNESS—AND THEN CAME THE SOUNDS, UNHEARD, UNAPPRECIATED. THE HARD BREAK OF CHAIN UNLINKED. THE WET SNAP OF FLESH UNTETHERED. THE COSMIC ROAR OF BEAST UNBRIDLED."

After the vicious murder of his parents, soldier Jesus Alarcón pursues vengeance. His quest puts him on a collision course with the embittered Sarah Creed, who seeks her own retribution against the forces that corrupted her life.

Plunged into a dark underworld inhabited by those who worship the “room of cloth," will they rediscover the people they once were or abandon themselves to their new, depraved reality?

The sequel to ROOM OF CLOTH, ABATTOIR escalates the prior novel's exploration of “the darkest knots of the human condition" (M. Cantor) and imagines a world in which all choices have been wiped away except the most fundamental of life or death.

This sequel to Room of Cloth features a deeply compelling plot that's certain to cost a sleepless night or two. However, the rapid pace and expanded scope, though well handled, sometimes left this reader pining for the more confined setting, along with the slow, creeping sense of revelation that colored the first installment. On a related note, the author continues with some excellent characterization, but it feels like there wasn't opportunity to flesh out everyone to the same degree as with Room of Cloth, particularly when it comes to a certain red mask wearer and minions. All that being said, this reader is hooked and will eagerly check out any future work the author publishes, be it part of this series or something other.

TW/CW: This novel contains scenes of graphic violence and allusions to physical/emotional abuse, graphic descriptions of murder and dismemberment.

How far would you go to spread an idea if you were tasked? What would you be willing to sacrifice if it meant being truly free?

In the follow up novel to "Room of Cloth", we meet a new set of flawed characters, each with their own agenda. They all have been touched by The Manacled Man and the Room of Cloth. Some seek retribution, others glory.

We meet Jesus who, with his brother Joaquin, is bent on carrying out tasks outlined by The Pink House to gain an invitation to a celebration where he hopes to finally be able to seek vengeance on those who took his family away. We also meet Sarah Creed who is on her own path, hoping to find atonement for the things she has done. As they both work their way through he network of people connected to the Room of Cloth, they find that it is very hard to stop an idea and, in the end, the only choices are to live or to die.

I enjoyed this book and it helped answer some questions I had after the first book. This is not a book to pick up if you have not read the first one. I believe it would be very hard for someone to understand the deeper plot if they did.

The ending leaves it open to the possibility of more books being written. A particular segment of the book alludes to how the idea is far more spread than previously thought, and will be difficult to stop, especially in the Digital Age. The way the beings are still left vague, and whether or not the are agents of chaos or agents of righteousness, still depend on your viewpoint. It does present them as perhaps being malevolent, but even the Devil himself was once an angel.

I have enjoyed the books written by this author. The books require time to process what is written. I consider them intelligent horror. They make the reader question and stop and think about what they are reading. The ties to pop culture are not always "on the nose", but are there, and that makes my little nerd heart happy.

If you haven't checked out his other work ("Room of Cloth", "Simulacrum", I highly suggest you do.

We meet Jesus and his brother in the second installment. Where the room of cloth is still very much an issue.

Once again I'm swept away to the world of the room of cloth. In this one we have chapters and sections from different characters mainly Sarah and Jesus. Again another binge read from me 😂 I was enthralled by the whole cult feel of this where members who were trying to spread the room of cloths word meet up. Sarah and Jesus want to put an end to this. But let me tell you it's hard bloody work for them. At the end we find another way the room of cloth is making it's way into people's lives which is a new way from what I've seen previously. I really enjoyed this sequel and I may prefer it to the original. Just because I've already created these bonds with characters for it all to be torn apart when things twist unexpectedly! Another good read!
