Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903 – 1989) was a Belgian writer. A prolific author who published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, Simenon is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.
Although he never resided in Belgium after 1922, he remained a Belgian citizen throughout his life.

Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.

He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain.

During his "American" period, Simenon reached the height of his creative powers, and several novels of those years were inspired by the context in which they were written (Trois chambres à Manhattan (1946), Maigret à New York (1947), Maigret se fâche (1947)).

Simenon also wrote a large number of "psychological novels", such as La neige était sale (1948) or Le fils (1957), as well as several autobiographical works, in particular Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948), Mémoires intimes (1981).

In 1966, Simenon was given the MWA's highest honor, the Grand Master Award.

In 2005 he was nominated for the title of De Grootste Belg (The Greatest Belgian). In the Flemish version he ended 77th place. In the Walloon version he ended 10th place.

5 Stars. Superintendent Maigret at his best. Can you feel his dilemma? He almost didn't take this case. Deliberately. A few days before his retirement he's in his office at the Police Judiciaire in Paris late at night doing his best to finally get his files in order when the phone rings. Should he take it? With two days to go? A case now will surely go past his departure. But he was alone. It turns out that the body of a music salesman has been found in a seedy hotel near the Gare du Nord. The middle-aged Georges Bompard had been stabbed to death. But no weapon is in sight. What is found is one half of a pair of women's stockings. Questioning the proprietor and the night porter, Maigret finds that the victim arrived alone after 3am. Yet there's evidence of a woman. A prostitute? It doesn't take long before he's located the owner of the second half! She's registered in another room. Celine Germain from Orleans, young and doing her best to divulge little information, had stuffed the other stocking down the washbasin. He hauls her to headquarters where the two fence, figuratively that is, for the rest of the day while Janvier and Lucas jump to his bidding. Is she guilty? A classic. (February 2022)

Written when Simenon had an idea that he could retire Chief Inspector Maigret. Fortunately that thought never fully coalesced into reality and a whole range of stories across Maigret’s career were to be written.

In this short story we are two days away from retirement. His wife is preparing their new home; fishing and potting about in his garden shed awaits.

Meanwhile he is closing down his career; sorting his papers and getting little sleep. Well before the morning shift arrive the duty phone rings; someone has just popped out to get a coffee. The last thing Maigret needs to do is answer it.

A murder has happened in a cheap hotel and feeling obligated to attend Maigret attends much to his chagrin but perhaps completely in character.

It leads to a suspect being taken away and Maigret conducts one of his set piece interviews the series is well known for in many of his investigations. That it is thought of by Maigret himself as one of his less productive and tiresome face to face encounters only in part reflects the struggles that ensued.

I think this is a wonderful account of Maigret the person, the man and the copper. He is no jobsworth, he isn’t just going through the motions. He doesn’t rush to judgement “Book 'em, Danno.”

His patience and thought processes finally allow him to think differently and solve the mystery without any help from the suspect “helping the police with their enquiries.”

Love the ending; never one to follow the rules or be mean to save face. Also a tale where it is raining again in Paris and Maigret needs a beer!
