Rate this book
Revenge has never been so seductive.

When her husband is killed at Waterloo, Lilias Fairchild takes up his cavalry sword and boldly storms the front, earning herself the nickname Angel of Vengeance. But there is another angel on the battlefield who is just as single-minded, and just as ruthless…

Alastair Whitmore, the Marquess of Angelstone, is a British spy. Code name: Angel. Still haunted by a first love felled by assassins, his mission draws him to Waterloo, where he is captivated by a beautiful and mysterious woman fighting amongst the men—a woman who becomes his most intoxicating memory of war.

Passion has never been so dangerous.

Two years later, Lilias and Angelstone lock eyes in a crowded ballroom and the memory returns in an exhilarating rush. The history they share, and hide from the world, is as impossible to ignore as the heat of their attraction. But it’s that very connection that spells doom for their scandalous affair. When someone from the shadows of their past proves a dire threat to their lives, passion might not be enough to save them.

I've given this a B+ at AAR, so 4.5 stars (but it was <> this close to being a DIK).

I haven’t (yet) got around to reading Alyssa Alexander’s début novel, The Smuggler Wore Silk, but having heard good things about it from friends whose opinions I trust, I was keen to read her latest book, In Bed With a Spy. I was very impressed with the author’s ability to create a fast-paced story and compelling, rounded characters, and at the same time to develop a romance with a very “adult” feel to it (in the sense that the characters act their ages rather than their shoe sizes!) with enough sexual chemistry between the leads to set the book alight.

Crazed with grief and bent on revenge upon learning of her husband’s death on the battlefield at Waterloo, Lilias Fairchild took up his sabre and rode into battle herself, killing many enemy soldiers and earning herself the nickname The Angel of Vengeance .

Alastair Whitmore, Marquess of Angelstone is a British spy who has spent years tracking down a group of assassins known as the Death Adders. It’s become rather an obsession with him ever since they murdered his lover four years before, and he has diligently collected evidence from every assassination the group has claimed. Tasked with carrying a message to Wellington at Waterloo, he briefly fought at Lilias’ side, and has never forgotten the sight of the lone woman, riding hell-for-leather, wielding her sabre inexpertly but with deadly intent. When, two years later, he sees her in a crowded ballroom, he is immediately captivated and determined to have her.

The couple trade witticisms and thinly veiled double-entendres that immediately communicate to the reader the fact that here are two people who aren’t afraid to acknowledge the attraction between them and are prepared to go after what they want. Lilias hasn’t felt even the tiniest stirring of attraction for any man since Waterloo, and certainly nothing like the heat of the desire the handsome marquess evokes in her. Yet she’s wary – Angelstone is a notorious rake and she senses something dark and hidden in him which should repel her, but which only draws her toward him even more.

Not long after her first encounter with Angel, Lilias makes the devastating discovery that her late husband – a man she’d loved deeply and lived with for six years – was not the person she had believed him to be. It’s a crushing blow, and yet Lilias is not defeated; instead, she’s furious at the deception, and perhaps angry with herself for never suspecting – and steels herself to find out the truth, no matter how dangerous the search or how distasteful the that truth turns out to be.

In Bed With a Spy is a thoroughly entertaining and well-balanced blend of thriller and romance. The thriller element of the story is well-plotted, and the various twists and turns kept me firmly hooked as Angel and Lilias’ search for the leader of the Death Adders brings them closer to danger and to each other.

The romance is tender and sexy and every bit as well-written as the mystery plot and the chemistry between the central couple is scorching. Both are emotionally bruised and never expected to discover such a strong bond with another person, so they have to work at allowing themselves to trust and love again. But what makes their relationship stand out from so many others in the genre is the fact that they talk to each other and act like adults; they have fights, they make up. Lilias wants to help with Angel’s search for the assassins, and while he wants to keep her out of it to protect her, he also recognises what an asset she could be working alongside him.

Lilias is independent, intelligent, and above all, sensible. Heroines of her ilk are often prone to doing stupid things that put them in danger, but not Lilias, which is one of the things I really liked about her. And Angel is a wonderful hero – clever and ruthless when he has to be, but also a man devoted to his family and who wants the best for his family. There’s some lovely familial interplay in the story between Angel and his mother and sisters, a gentle teasing which is both poignant and funny. He’s also a hugely talented violinist, which, as far as I’m concerned, makes him practically the perfect romantic hero!

In Bed With a Spy is well written, the story is gripping and well-told, the central characters act like grown-ups, and the sex scenes, while not overly explicit are hot and sensual. Another big plus is the fact that Angel and Lilias don’t have to trawl through pages of misunderstandings in order to get their HEA; the author very wisely steers clear of attempting to create tension by throwing in silly plot-devices when there’s already enough going on in the story and in their relationship to provide it. As an example – when, late in the book, Lilias learns some important information, even though she and Angel have had a bit of a tiff, she doesn’t think to keep it to herself in a fit of the sulks; she know’s what she’s discovered is vital and goes to him straight away, regardless of the way things stand between them.

I really enjoyed the book, although I do have a couple of minor reservations. Firstly, the identity of the villain is obvious, even though Ms. Alexander does a good job throwing in a red-herring that briefly made me wonder if perhaps my initial suspicion was wrong before I decided it wasn’t. And the ending, while exciting and full of action, is just a bit the wrong side of implausible and is very rushed. I felt rather as though I’d been running down a hill as the tension ramped up – and instead of it levelling out gradually as we headed to the final page, I hit a brick wall! The story would perhaps have benefitted from one more, gentler paced chapter to level things out before it ended.

But other than that, it’s a great read and one I have no hesitation in recommending.

“There is no espionage here. No memories. There’s only a man and a woman.”

This was one hot little potato!

The bare bones: widow who finds out she maybe didn't know her husband as well as she thought, spy seeking revenge for his murdered lover, widow and spy awakening each other's sexual desires, and a dangerous espionage game of cat and mouse.

The vast majority of this book is sensual, think a step beyond sexy because the emotion between our leads is extremely on point. For every one scene involving the espionage plot of trying to uncover the identity of the Adder assassins, there are probably three sexy time scenes.

Now, the romance, sexual tension, and emotion between our leads was amazing and written in such a way I went to go check this author's backlist (more on that in a moment). However, the middle started to sag for me as it felt like the story stopped progressing, things started to get repetitive, and the search for the assassin identities went on too long.

Well, kind of, I guess. I needed a little more story in the middle instead of the jam packed ending that felt severely rushed. I had the traitorous thought that this might have worked better as a novella with a lot of it trimmed.

So when I went to search for this author's backlist to read the hell out of it, I discovered this is a pretty new author, only one other book to her name, which happens to be the first in this series. This is incredibly impressive because of the amazing emotional depth she was able to infuse her characters with but with the overall plot structure I can see some slight growing pains. Seriously, though how exciting is it to have a new author showcase such talent! If she can keep writing her main couple's relationship in such an incredible way as she did here, then sign me up for all her books.

*Thanks to Caz for the recommendation :)

3 1/2 Solid Stars!

It feels like I have been on the roll lately with my historical romances, once I go on that kick it seems hard to stop. Besides, it's been a while, so I guess it was okay and time to indulge. Naturally I was drawn to In Bed with a Spy, historical romances with a spy plot line? Yes please. It's been a while since I read one with them in it and it always promises to be entertaining.

I liked the book well enough. Lilias Fairchild lost her husband when he was killed during the war in Waterloo, so she took up his sword and stormed into the front earning herself a nickname Angel of Vengeance.

Alistair Whitmore cannot forget the woman he saw back at Waterloo that suddenly became a memory he could not shed. His a spy who lost his wife to an assassin and has made it his life mission to revenge her death and it turns out the only other person who could help him is the very same woman who he was unable to take his eyes off at Waterloo.

Lilias should have known that getting involved with Angelford might be a bad idea, but it's been so long since she had any kind of company of a man and the Marquess is proving to be a temptation hard to ignore. When secrets behind her husband's death start to come to life, she is suddenly found in the middle of something bigger and more dangerous than she had expected. When Angelford realizes her past might be the only link to finding the killer behind his late wife, he enlists in Lilias' help to find the truth behind the assassins.
Fun, had the action I wanted to some extent but the book felt a little slow for me. It started out a bit slow and stayed that way for a while until the danger started to shed some light on the story and made it much more captivating. I liked the characters, I really loved Lilias characters and how hard-headed she was and wouldn't back down. Fiery and ambitious, Lilias stood tall when things tried to knock her back down. I kind of found her independence invigorating.

The secrets kept me hooked. I wanted to know more about the assassins behind both of the deaths. I was a little confused by why Angelford's wife was killed in the book, and I don't recall getting much of an explanation. But two broken hearts coming together is just what Angel and Lilias needed in order to begin their healing.

The chemistry between the two was good enough. The sparks were there, which added to my enjoyment of the story. Despite the slow start, I really did find myself enjoying the plot, even if it took a while to get through and the writing was really well done, I find that Alexander really has her way with words and knows how to tell a great story that has a bit more complicated plot outside of romance.

I got a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Fantastic Story. Loved it. It started out great and ended great. Can't help but love a good historical romance spy book.
The heroine, Lilias was awesome, strong, witty, smart, spunky and beautiful. Wielding a sword on the back of stallion in a battle makes for a kick ass heroine. The hero, Angel was great too, handsome, strong and smart.
The chemistry between them was great. It was real and genuine, not forced. There was some really well written sex scenes, some of the best I have read actually. Not erotica, just very well written.

The story line and plot were great. There is so much great dialogue throughout the entire book too. I especially like that this was not full of angst, what a treat. So much angst can be so annoying. This was not like that at all.
The only thing missing was an epilogue. I think an epilogue would have been great. But it did not take away from the story.
If you like historical romance stories and spy books you will like this one.

I just about fell in love with Angel in The Smuggler Wore Silk, Ms. Alexander’s first book in this series, and I must say I am overjoyed with the results: IN BED WITH A SPY is simply perfect! The romantic and mysterious Angel, besides fighting assassins, traitors and conspirators has found a sensuous and enigmatic widow to brighten up his life.

IN BED WITH A SPY is even more beautifully written than the first book, the romance is as exciting as the spying. It’s brilliant! Definitely no sophomore jinx for Alyssa Alexander!

I loved In Bed with a Spy, and you will too! Alyssa Alexander's second book delivers a sensual mystery packed with intrigue, mistrust, love, and the occasional weapon-wielding heroine. The heroine in this book, Lilias, is a widow who believed her first marriage was pretty darn good... until the secrets around her deceased husband's life and death begin to unravel, and it seems she may have married an assassin.

With that premise, the book goes on to reel you in and not let go!

I don't know how this ended up on my to read list.

The intrigue and spy portion of the story was interesting, but the romance felt undeveloped. I felt bad for their first loves and did not understand when or how these two fell in love.

I do not plan to read more by this author.

I absolutely loved this novel. I find that authors who write Historical Romance either have it or they don’t. You can’t fake a Historical; you have to have the language, the writing, the storytelling to be able to imitate something from a different time period. And Ms. Alexander captivated me with her writing. I felt like I was in the early 1800’s and it was great.

“His fingers twitched reflexively. She wanted to dance.”

Lilias is a beautiful widow who fought in the battlefields of Waterloo after her husband died. She’s strong, courageous, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Two years after her husband’s death, she meets Angelstone. She had never thought of herself as wanting of another man, but he causes her body to feel that little flutter. Something she hadn’t felt in years. We learn throughout the book that she’s a fighter; she’d rather stand her ground that run to protect herself, which is unheard of of woman in that day. She’s bold, and doesn’t follow the norm.

“‘I know there is a void in you. I know you need to fill it.’ His lips pressed against hers, wreaking havoc on her control. He drew back and rested his forehead against hers. ‘But there is only me and you here. No one else.'”

Angelstone is a British spy. He was simply astounded by the beauty of Lilias when he saw her on the battlefield a few years ago, and he is drawn to her even now when he sees her at a ball. He’s smart, trained, and also a bit damaged. He, too, has blood on his hands. While the beginning of their courtship does not start off as any normal one does, he can’t help but continue to want her. Something about her resonates within him, and quite simply she dazzles him. Passion ignites hotly, and their affair (as it was called back in the day, not that she was cheating) begins to be obsessive. But, there’s danger lurking and she’s drawn into it as he is. They will have to protect each other because she is anything but a damsel in distress.

“‘Do not make me wait, Lilias.’ His voice was part groan, part whisper.”

A Historical Romance really has to pull me in because I’m not one to normally read this genre, and this one did that and more. I fell asleep devouring it, wanting to know how everything panned out. I loved the espionage, the intrigue, the passion. And you will too.

This was a tough one to rate and review. Mainly because the book left me muddled and wanting. And much like the leads, I yo-yoed back and forth trying to sort out my feelings. On one hand, the book had a lot of exceptional qualities which mainly centered around the heroine and contrastly, it a lot of not so stellar aspects, such as the blah hero, cartoonish villain and wishy washy romance. I’ll start with the negatives first just to get them out of the way.

I found Angel as a hero unremarkable and uninspiring, especially in comparison to Lilias. The fact that he played the violin and had a close knit family made up entirely of women were the only things to recommend him. Oh, and his line comparing Lilias to a Valkyrie was pretty good too. Perhaps it was because I found him so decidedly dull that when he and Lilias fell instantly in lust with one another, I almost immediately checked out. Not only was the chemistry completely absent between them, IN MY OPINION, but the more important emotional side of their relationship was very inconsistent. One minute they only wanted each other for sex which was fine, but then in the next instant they wanted to form a deeper bond, at least that’s what their inner thoughts kept telling us, until they both shut down again, not allowing the other to get too close. This boomeranging of feelings gave me a headache and only made me even more disillusioned with them as a couple.

The book did get this bit right, though:
“Attraction was as easy as breath. Sex was easier. But emotion---that was a complicated thing.”

Unfortunately there was no follow through from this brief moment of clarity, not to my satisfaction anyway. I wanted to see and feel that Angel and Lilias were falling for each other, not constantly being told that they were, or might be or whatever, but I got a convoluted mess instead.

Now I’m gonna talk something decidedly more positive, that being Lilias. She was an incredible woman, if not the most realistic. Let’s see, she rode into battle at Waterloo, knew how to fence, shoot and wield sabres, constantly wore breeches, had no qualms about hunting down a pack of lethal assassins and shamelessly took control of her own sexuality by seducing Angel in his study, at his desk, on his chair. Yeah, that was glorious. So was the fencing practice turned sexy times. Although sadly these scenes didn’t have the usual zing to them they should have since this couple wasn’t doing it for me, but I could still appreciate them. As could I appreciate Lilias’ courage and strength as she tried to rebuild her life. I was sad to see such a remarkable character not used to her full potential or given a hero that complimented her in every way that mattered. Oh well.

In Bed with a Spy was an underwhelming read, but I still really like Alyssa Alexander’s writing style. If she plans to write more books in the future, I’d definitely be interested in reading them.

In Bed with a Spy by Alyssa Alexander is the 2nd book in her Spy in the Ton series. This is my first book by Alyssa Alexander, and after finishing In Bed With a Spy, it will not be my last. I do enjoy some Historical/Regency Romance, but it is not my go to, as I usually prefer Contemporary Romance. When I started this book, it caught my interest immediately when the soldier in the midst of a war battle was mesmerized by the beautiful lady on horseback wielding a sword to fight off the enemy…it is here we meet the Angel of Vengeance.

Two years later, after the battle at Waterloo is over, Alistair Whitmore (Angel), the Marquess of Angelford, who is our hero, attends a ball. Angel is known as a rake and a womanizer, but what most people do not know, he is a British Spy. At the ball, he spots a beautiful blond haired young lady, who had all men surrounding her. When she turns around, he recognizes her as the woman of his dreams for the last two years, the one known as the Angel of Vengeance. Lilias Fairchild is our heroine, who is a widow, with all the available men fawning over her. The moment she too spots Angelford, she recognizes the soldier who stared at her during the battle. Immediately, they both feel the attraction, with the chemistry between them igniting.

There were two major parts of this wonderful story, which I finished in one day. The slow build romance between Alaistair (Angel) and Lilias was so beautifully done, with each having relationships from the past that holds them back from totally trusting each other. But as they become involved in a suspense intrigue, their chemistry is off the wall, as they act on their feelings, thinking it’s just a fling. They were so passionate & great together, as well as being fun spies.

The second part was the ongoing suspenseful investigation to find the killers behind the assassinations by the group called the Adders. This was such a great mystery, with a lot of excitement and danger. Lilias, much to Angel’s dismay becomes involved in the investigation, since she finds out her dead husband was involved. They did make a great team, and there was so much action, we held our breaths at times if they would survive.

I could not put the book down, since I was impatient to find out so many questions that I needed answers to: Who was the mastermind of the Adders? Would Lilias allow herself to fall in love with Angel? Will Angel get past his horrifying memory of a past love, and open himself to Lilias? Will they survive their investigation?

The last 1/3 of the book was so exciting and heart-stopping. There were a number of twists, and betrayals that added to the suspense. Alyssa Alexander has given us a wonderful intimate and suspenseful story, with a fabulous couple. Bravo! I totally recommend you read this book.

Awesome book..

It was an exciting prologue and when the book really got started I was so engrossed I couldn’t get through the pages fast enough. THEN, I thought OMG Angel’s going to spend this entire book thinking Lilias is guilty and she’s not going to understand why and it’s just going to go on and on with so much angst and misunderstandings. Umm… NOPE! Yay! It was at about 20% that he knew she wasn’t guilty and there was not going to be any ‘serious’ misunderstandings. I’m so pleased with this author for that I just can’t believe it.

There’s so much going on with the Death Adders. They kill and leave their calling card, a medallion, and Angel is trying his best to find out who the leader is. So much murder, mayhem, intrigue, sexual tension, sex, love, it’s just an amazing book from beginning to end. Was Lilias’s husband an assassin or was he assassinated? Is Sir Charles the leader? Is Lord Grant Fairchild? Is it Hawthorne? Maybe Lady Catherine? It’s anybody’s guess, and I couldn’t wait to find out.

The chemistry between Lilias and Angel (Lord Angelstone) was off the charts. I’m surprised none of the other reviewers didn’t mention it, (that’s how authors end up with 1 star reviews.) THERE’S SEX IN THIS BOOK, beginning in a chair! And the bedroom scene was one of the romantic scenes I’ve ever read.

For him being a spy he was totally different with his family, he was kind and loving to his mother, his two sisters-in-law and he adored his niece Maggie. His feelings and actions for Lilias were loving and tender THEN when it was time to question a bad guy Angel was cold, hard and ruthless.

A really wonderful book, with lots and lots of excitement.

However, it did end at 94% and went on to tell part of The Smuggler Wore Silk. And I was surprised that this book ended so abruptly.

Because it makes me crazy that every single romance has one thing in common, from now on, I’m going to mention the heroine biting her lip. Worrying her lip. Chewing at her lip or nibbling at her lip, or doing whatever to her lip. No one bit their lip. Yay!

Amazing Romantic Suspense!

In Bed With A Spy is the second book in this amazing series (Spy in the ton). Alistair Whitmore, the Marquess of Angelford is a British spy and rake who is captivated by the beautiful woman he saw in battlefield two years ago. When he sees her in the crowded ballroom, he can't stop his attraction to her. Lilias Fairchild nickname Angel of Vengeance is a young widow out of mourning after 2 years. This is a fantastic romantic suspense, Alyssa Alexander's writing captivates the reader from the first page. I love how the hero and heroine learn to trust each other and share their secrets. This is a fabulous story of love, secrets, lies, betrayal and romance.I really enjoyed Lilias and Angel's story. The secondary characters were charming and fun too. I can't wait to read her next book. Thank you Alyssa Alexander.

This author continues to show us the perfect balance between smart intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat and a sexy, wonderful romance worth rooting for. This hero-heroine combination is particularly appealing. No delicate flowers here, as Lilias is as fierce and engaging as Angel. Both main characters are simply wonderful, and I dare you to find a couple who can go toe to toe more perfectly. The suspense plot in In Bed With A Spy is far from secondary, and it's clear Alexander has done her homework, and done it well. Engaging, classic historical romantic suspense with just enough modern twist with a strong, independent heroine, I couldn't put this book down. Loved it!

Boy, oh boy! What a rush! Whew! (Picture me fanning myself!) "The Smuggler Wore Silk" was an excellent first novel, and the author sure hit the ground running with this second one. Tight writing -- in spots it almost makes you hum, like a well-played violin string. (And there's a lot of that imagery in this novel.) It's so steamy, it will peel wallpaper; yet it's a good solid story supported by good characters. Do pick it up. I found my copy at Barnes & Noble.

You gotta love a heroine who picks up her dead husband's saber and charges into battle....at Waterloo, no less! I totally loved Angel. But what made this a five star read? The violin music Angel played for his H, and the romance which followed. It was absolutely beautiful. So much it made me cry.

Can we please have Jones's story? Please?

I like how it was a romance with a plot, too. The plot was exciting, kind of a spy novel without the whole mystery, though there was a mystery aspect to the novel. There was danger and everything.

Though I wish we could have known Angel's personality better. The sex was beautifully written and you could tell there was so much compelling passion and lust in their relationship. It was crazy how much there was, really. I didn't really like how they barely knew each other when they first made love. It was just lust at first sight. I wish the characters could have known each other better before ...

I read this book, because Alyssa Alexander was recently the speaker at my local Romance Writer's of America meeting and I had met her previously when I purchased this book.

Alexander is a superb writer!

In Bed with a Spy held many layers of internal and external conflict, heightening the stakes, for both the hero and heroine. The sex scenes were not randomly thrown into the story, they're a natural consequence of the plot line and blend very well within the narrative. At the end it seemed that the peril the characters faced was going to conquer them, but everything turned out happily ever after!

This is the first of Alyssa Alexander's books that I have read, but I will definitely be seeking out others! It's always a little exciting to read of espionage and thrilling to read of the action and danger involved in that life, the romantic entanglements, on top of both the hero and heroine's past loves should have almost seemed too much, but it gave them a personality that matched them perfectly! I also greatly appreciate that it took me the majority of the book to figure out who the villain really was. I figured it out not long before the heroine, in fact, which was a huge draw. I do desperately hope that his loved one doesn't suffer too much, because I really liked her.
