This is a very good book. Writing in the book is so fresh and present that it feels like you are watching a movie. Given that they are also doing a movie (Jayantha Chandrasiri as the director), it would be an easy job to do the script based on the book. And if the movie stays true to the book, it would be one of the fascinating movies to come out from Sri Lanka cinema. But I am afraid whether the budget would allow mass scale production because Cinema is not a big industry in the country.
Talking about the story, I think the writer has painted Gemunu's character with too much white ink. It is understandable due to the fact that the Great King holds highest regards especially among Sinhala community. So, even his angry moments are justified and some story points are there that is true good to be true. His views towards his brother after brother's betrayal and his lack of interest to wage war when they are in climax of the story are good examples. Love angle of Elara's daughter is new information for me. Is it true history or work of fiction?
Overall the story is a good read. Even if you do not have an interest in reading history related stories because of "boring" stereotype of the genre, this novel shouldn't be missed because it will keep you interested all the way. Book is not large and pace is not slow.
