4.5 stars.

Honestly, I spent a great deal of time deliberating over the rating of this volume because it evoked such a mixture of feelings within me.

While I genuinely enjoyed reading it, I also experienced considerable frustration throughout. As we approach the conclusion of the story, this final arc is as heart-wrenching as I anticipated, and I know even more pain is yet to come. The volume was so laden with suffering that I felt as if I were drowning in it. It was packed with revelations, deaths, and deeply emotional moments shared between the characters.

Chu Wanning—my darling—how much he makes my heart ache. Every detail I discover about him only increases my tears. This man, this beautiful soul, is the most innocent and pure character in the entire story. The immense suffering he endures and the fact that he deserves nothing but happiness evoke such pity. His backstory is painfully harsh, filled with injustice and heartbreak.

Mo Ran, on the other hand, irritated me to no end in this volume. I can't quite explain why, but I felt a strong urge to slap him a few times due to his behavior. He somehow stepped on every single thing that makes me annoyed.
His guilt over past actions weighs heavily on him, occupying every moment of his waking life. He is so overwhelmed with it that he is constantly thinking of his sins and is starting to slowly lose his sanity but at some point, it starts to become somewhat repetitive for him to go over and over his behavior in the 0.5 timeline.

Xue Meng, my shining ray of sunlight amid this dark world, was my sole source of happiness in this part of the story.

I must admit, I am beginning to like Shi Mei from the 2.0 timeline.

The relationship between Chu Wanning and Mo Ran received little focus here, as the volume concentrated more on the backstories of the side characters. However, what we did get to see at the end was enough to leave me speechless. That finale was intense, full of twists and revelations that left me spinning in place.

The ending left me aching to read the next volume immediately.

In conclusion, volume 8 is set to break me even more, and I honestly can't wait for what’s coming next.

This review is probably gonna be a whole lot of nothing, and a whole lot of swearing…

MEATBUN YOU 🫵 EVIL 🫵 GENIUS 🫵 YOU

☆☆☆

But first, we shall start with a conversation between present Izabella and past Izabella, featuring excerpts from reviews of past volumes;

“I feel like we know Chu Wanning, yet we still don’t. I’m a sucker for a good backstory and I feel like Chu Wanning is amping up for one hell of a backstory. And. I’m. Ready” -excerpt from review of vol 4
No you’re not. Stay curious buddy. For your sanity.

“And I all I want for these two is to be happy and in love together” -excerpt from review of vol 6, talking about Nangong Si and Ye Wangxi
HAH YOU FUCKING THOUGHT

“I am just so invested in their relationship already. I’m excited to see how it progresses and how their characters develop” -excerpt from review of vol 1
NO GO BACK 🫵 SAVE YOURSELF IZABELLA

“This volume was actually so fluffy? And cute? And sweet?” -excerpt from review of vol 6
You didn’t appreciate what you had til you lost it 💔

☆☆☆

In this lifetime—in these two lifetimes —his greatest fortune had been to meet Chu Wanning, and his greatest misfortune had been to wrong Chu Wanning. Such was their fate.

New favourite volume alert!! What did Meatbun lace this book with because I could not put it down. I am distraught, I am seething, I am heartbroken. Meatbun really decided that we get a volume worth of reprieve and fluff, and then decided to sprinkle (more like viciously slam) the angst in these 2 arcs. But angst, death, TIMELINES COLLIDING! What the actual fuck did I read.

He stammered onward, unsure how to continue. Xu Shuanglin vividly remembered how Luo Fenghua—who seemed better addressed by xiao-gege than shifu—looked, standing beneath that tangerine tree in the bright sun of Linyi. His back was to the light, illuminating the slender green veins beneath the delicate rim of his ear, that fragile skin translucent amber in the light.

So this is the end of Xu Shuanglin’s story. And of course Meatbun had to hit me with the jaw dropping backstory before we moved on. Because Meatbun decided to just casually write the most beautiful parallels between these characters. Xu Shuanglin sucks, but the way you could so clearly connect his actions and feelings to Taxian-Jun is insane. Both have complicated feelings towards their Shizuns (love, the feeling is repressed love). Both want their Shizuns alive and safe (even if they deny the hell out of it). I mean just look at the above quote and see how Xu Shuanglin’s first meeting with Luo Fenghua directly parallels Mo Ran’s meeting with Chu Wanning! Both Xu Shuanglin and Mo Ran use cruel and twisted ways to get back their loved ones. Both have complicated relationships with their brother figures. Both have complicated family dynamics. Not to mention that Chu Wanning and Luo Fenghua even share their own parallels. Both would rather face ridicule, cruelty, pain, even death, to save their disciples that same pain (I’m sobbing rn).

So this is my way of giving Meatbun a standing ovation because of this brilliant masterpiece.

"He chuckled. "You certainly have faith in yourself.”

“Jiang-zhangmen is mistaken; my faith isn't in myself. My faith is in her."

No Nangong Si, you can’t just sacrifice yourself! Remember how I once went on and on about how I hope Ye Wangxi and Nangong Si have a happy ending together? Well… guess I’m the dumbass. Doomed in every timeline, these two can’t catch a break 💔

Chu Wanning... He was so, so good. Why did he have to suffer such a cruel fate? To be deemed less than human, to have his creator treat him as a lifeless, empty shell, born for the sole purpose of sustaining the life of another?

You might’ve been subjected to incoherent status updates of me just swearing and crying. First one was because Taxian-Jun?? Was there?? In the flesh?? Bro causally shows up in the wrong timeline. I was fucking screaming and sobbing. So sick and twisted, Meatbun 🫵

And then the second one, was because of Chu Wanning’s origin story… FUCK YOU MEATBUN I LOVE YOU YOU DESTROYED ME I HATE YOU!!! Nah, because I knew Chu Wanning had to be connected to Chu Xun and Chu Lan. But never in my wildest imagination did I think that Chu Wanning is actually just a magical piece of wood created for the sole purpose of being a vessel for Chu Lan’s souls to appease Huaizui’s guilt. SICK AND TWISTED 🫵 Everything about Chu Wanning just got 100x more tragic now. What do you mean bro was just a wooden vessel? What do you mean bro used to have the most carefree smile and laughter? What do you mean bro met child Mo Ran and saved his fucking life? What do you mean bro literally carved open his own chest to appease his teacher? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!?!

He left every bit of his gentleness, trust, and innocence in that dignified monastery. Those were all things that Huaizui had given him. Now, alongside the splinters of his spiritual core and the blood that had run from his body, they were taken from him.

Fuck you Huaizui! You stole that boy’s innocence and happiness 🫵 You stole his smiles and laughter 🫵 You are the reason he was subjected to so much pain and suffering 🫵 But also without you he wouldn’t exist so I’m a little conflicted 🫵

Angst, angst, and so much more angst. Timelines colliding everywhere. Secrets revealed. But still more questions!

I can’t stay with you; I don’t deserve you. I’m low and dirty, a blight on the world. But you’re pure and clean. I can’t stand next to you, Wanning. So please let me stand before you. I’ll block all the blood and blades for you—all of it, until the day I die.

I just finished chapter 243 and am in awe. This volume was outstanding. It tied together all of the previous storylines and explained the small details within them that, at the time, didn't make sense or didn't seem relevant to the story.

The events that took place on Mount Jiao caught me completely by surprise, and I literally bawled, bawled!, over what happened to some of the characters. I've read so many spoilers for this story that I didn't think anything could shake me at this point. Apparently, I was wrong. 😭 Everyone in this story has had to deal with the repercussions of misunderstanding, ill-will, treachery, and apathy toward their plight in life. It's hard not to feel compassion for some of the so-called villains because everything seems to be a dominio effect of one act of cruelty leading to another.

The story isn't over, of course, but I'm happy to finally be able to move on to a new arc where we get to learn more about Chu Wanning's early life and his relationship with his own Shizun. We get closer to finding out what exactly drove Mo Ran to become the unhinged mass murderer that he became in his past life, and Mo Ran and Chu Wanning's relationship is further put to the test as more details of Mo Ran's past life is revealed to Chu Wanning. The last two chapters were particularly memorable.

I've set a new personal record of whisper-screaming what the fuck while reading a book. I've never wanted to throw a book across the room more times than this one. Heart? Palpitating so strongly I was going to maybe succumb to a heart attack at least three or four times.

Words...there are none. I am grasping at straws. The only thing I can coherently say with utmost conviction is that this volume entirely cements this series at being the most well-written plot and character-relationship dynamic I have ever read. I personally enjoy the writing style, but I'm not even talking about the writing style here — I'm talking plot and main characters.

I've already been claiming this series as one of my top favorite series of all time without having even completed this series — I've miraculously avoided spoilers this entire time. We still have four more volumes to go, but I can confidently denote that this entire book series is, without a doubt, my favorite book, singular, of all time. TGCF has been dethroned to number two, which is an absolutely diabolical thing for me to say as a self-pronounced TGCF simp. But 2HA has taken the cake. It was putting up a strong fight until now, but this volume has outdone itself.

The plot twists are nothing I ever could have considered in a million years. I've had my theories until now, and unless something changes in the next novels, I've been dead wrong this entire time. Even a little theory I had that is a little similar to what actually happened in this book turned out to be nothing what I could have imagined when it did occur.

I'm just speechless. Who could have predicted the revelations that happened in this volume? And not just one, but multiple! Gagged is an understatement. I am both so incredibly impressed with Meatbun for such a brilliant, unexpected plot, but also I want to rip her head off her body for doing this to me. Genuinely, I am in utter disbelief.

I'm a very placid person. As much as I love consuming art and content, whether that's a book or television show, it takes a LOT for me to actually care for it. It's takes a LOT for something to move me. I'm also a very character-driven consumer, but I also deeply desire a well thought-out plot, and so rarely is there any media that marriages these two in grand ways that leave me gaping in adoration and admiration.

2HA is that story for me. It's been that story for me, but this volume just blew itself out of the park. I am not even exaggerating when I say I had to set the book down multiple times because my heart was pounding. You know a book is insane when you are physically reacting to what's happening.

It was so unpredictable — never have I ever read or watched something where it genuinely took me so off guard and where I couldn't predict where it was headed. I mean, .

I don't think any story is going to top this one. There is no story as well thought out, as considerate, as tender, as aching, as terrifying, as loving, as depressing... I'm not even done reading this series and I already want to erase it from my memories so I can read it again for this first time.

This is just insane, how has Meatbun done this? How did she plan this plot out? How did she coherently write it so well?

Waiting for the next volume is agony.

Backstory is often the key to understanding people. In this seventh volume of “The Husky and his White Cat Shizun” by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou memories of the previous lives of Mo Ran and Chu Wanning seep into the consciousness of both characters and affect their relationship irrevocably. The happiness of volume 6 is replaced with sadness in this volume, because the truth of Mo Ran’s treatment of Chu Wanning in their previous lives was so cruel.

The book, however, begins in the afterglow of a fulfilling night for Mo Ran and Chu Wanning as they prepare to head up Mount Jiao with a large group of cultivators who are trying to help the Rufeng Sect. Mo Ran remembers his sadistic behaviour from his previous life and so he is set on treating Chu Wanning with dignity and love in this present life. He is determined that their intimacy will be on his lover’s terms and not based on the demands of an insatiable and callous emperor, demanding his right.

The adventures on Mount Jiao are full of enchanted statues and dangerous creatures. Only descendants of the Rufeng Sect can gain access, which means that Nangong Si has to use his blood to pay tribute to his ancestors. His arc with his ancestor, Nangong Changying, is woven into the story of Xu Shuanglin making him into an Zhenlong Chess piece. Mo Ran understands the use of Zhenlong Chess formation well, because he used it in his previous life but is still unable to prevent the tragedy on the mountain.

These events are gripping and full of undead details, but the plot really begins to unfold when Mo Ran begins to dream of his previous life and sees scenes where he treats Chu Wanning with wanton cruelty. These dreams contrast with Mo Ran’s deliberately careful behaviour in this life and so the result is jarring when Chu Wanning treats Mo Ran with such kindness in this life just after scenes of immense cruelty towards him in their previous lives.

Both their previous and present lives collide when Emperor Taxian-jun steps through the Space-Time Gate of Life and Death, which is an array that allows him to move between Mo Ran’s previous life and his present one. This results in an overlapping of the multiverse so that both versions of Mo Ran exist in the same space-time continuum. As his former self, Taxian-jun, Mo Ran is still heavy-handed in his treatment of Chu Wanning when he grabs him by the throat but this time Mo Ran fights back. Chu Wanning is trapped and is forced into a passive role while the two versions of Mo Ran fight over him.

Chu Wanning is utterly perplexed by the whole situation, because at this point he has only had glimpses of his previous life in disturbing dreams which he has tried to dismiss but which are unnervingly realistic and which feel more like memories than dreams. However, his former self fought back and has also stepped into this life and handed over a censer whose incense allows Mo Ran and Chu Wanning to see what happened between them in their former lives.

There is also an important reveal about Chu Wanning’s actual backstory and this flashback allows Mo Ran to realize that even before they knew each other, Chu Wanning’s kindness had saved him from starvation. This realization makes Taxian-jun’s insatiable behaviour seem ungrateful which in turn makes Mo Ran even more horrified by his former self. His punishment seems to be that he has evolved into a loving and considerate person but is forced to remember all the horrific things that he forced Chu Wanning to do. His saving grace is, however, that Chu Wanning understands that they are not the same. He says to Mo Ran, “I know you’re not him. You and Taxian-jun are not the same.” (79%)

Chu Wanning from the previous life used the Space-Time Gate of Life and Death to step into this life with an enchanted censer whose incense has to power to show what happened. The sad detail that neither the present Chu Wanning or Mo Ran realize is that they are forced to enact the behaviour that is seen in the dream of the past in the present. The Emperor’s unforgivable behaviour is both physically and mentally abusive and so Mo Ran is forced to relive his appalling behaviour and Chu Wanning is abused in this time as well. This is even more sad in the present, because Chu Wanning has felt the love and restraint that Mo Ran has shown in this life but is violated none the same. The end of this volume is a stark contrast to the loving scenes in the previous volume and desperately sad. A truly happy and reciprocal relationship has been shattered.

Trigger warning: Explicit and nonconsensual scenes in chapters 242 + 243

The last 20 pages ripped my heart out. I’ve read YUWU and BAB so of course I know Meatbun is not afraid of descriptive SA but my heart so bad for CW. And somehow MR too (but I’m still so mad at him).

Much like BAB I am intrigued to how Meatbun will reconcile their love. I am devastated for both CW and MR but also know their bond is going to be unbreakable.

Marking this as read just to get it off my currently reading list because it's been stuck there for months. I got spoiled while scrolling through a review, and knowing the next volume isn’t out yet (with three more still unpublished), I just couldn’t bring myself to continue. At this point, I've forgotten most of the character names and would probably need a full reread.

I just can't MTL this. I tried reading the fan translation, but I struggled to make sense of it. (I MTL-ed BAB once, and it fried my brain, def wouldn’t recommend reading an edited MTL of any of Meatbun’s works.) I really wish this had been translated by the same group that worked on QJJ, their fan translation was top-notch and almost as good as the official one.

This is exactly why I never recommend Meatbun’s books to my friends, the cliffhangers are brutal. Can someone just put me in a cryopod and wake me up 50 years later when all my favorite danmeis are officially published? 😭 I hate waiting. 🥹

Anyway, marking this as "read" for now. I’ll come back once all the volumes are out.

First the angst had me grinning, giggling and kicking my feet… now the angst has me mouth agape with cold tears rolling down my cheeks. I feel numb.. I feel alive..

“From the past life to the present, it was always Chu Wanning who was his lantern, his flame-keeping Mo Ran's darkness at bay, giving him all the warmth he could.”

The first time I read this part of the novel it was machine translated so I really had to piece things together and wow was I far off.

This book is so good
So so SOOO GOOD

“In this lifetime— in these two lifetimes — his greatest fortune had been to meet Chu Wanning, and his greatest misfortune had been to wrong Chu Wanning. Such was their fate.”

I tear is rolling down my cheek while I write this with blurry eyes. I just want to say poor Chi Wanning and Mo Ran! Wow! I can’t :( , this is too angsty, it’s so angsty, I don’t want to spoil but the ending of the book- the dragon cave arc or whatever.

“I can't stay with you; I don't deserve you. I'm low and dirty, a blight on the world. But you're pure and clean. I can't stand next to you, Wanning. So please let me stand before you. I'll block all the blood and blades for you— all of it, until the day I die.”

Such a tough read, but a needed one for this story. I love this story! It’s too good! Best fiction I’ve ever read! I just love reading and getting so immersed in stories like these, the emotions are so raw and real. I wish I had the next novel in my hands right now to continue the pain, but waiting a few months is less than 5 years.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, MEATBUN??????? YOU'RE CRAZY

I finished book 7 but I can confidently say book 7 finished me instead omfg 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I have no freaking words aside from what the fuck!!!!!! WHAT THE HECK!!!!!

I have read my fair share of xianxia now, but I fear Heaven official's blessing has officially been dethroned by Erha, yet I'm not even done with the series. I am utterly flabbergasted and mind blown by the complexity of the plot, characters, world building and writing

Oh my gosh
OH MY GOOSSSHHHH hhhhh

My mind and heart are in turmoil
I cried so freaking much!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gasped and jumped out of my bed/sofa countless times with how shocked I was while reading, I nearly shoved this ebook on the wall!!!!!! I was so upset, so happy, so heartbroken and traumatized until the very last sentence

Meatbun is mind-blowingly talented at depicting vivid emotions, imagery and sensory elements which makes reading this series ten times more painful and shocking. So please check trigger warnings, there are extremely violent and explicit contents of various natures

Now how am I supposed to wait for book 8? The wait is going to be unbearable 😞

But the line “Taxian Jun is gonna end the world/universe” just….bruh 😭. And I low-key felt like the ending chapter could have been different, or I’m just really upset they both had to relive that whole thing. It’s just SAD and I want them to be happy

I'm assuming this volume starts around ch. 210 and goes up to about ch. 235, since that's when we switch from the Mount Jiao arc to the Mount Longxue arc.
So, this review is for those chapters!

Notes:
- Good lord, the whole nightmare dream sequence is genuinely traumatic. And then the drama gets tastier when he wakes up in Chu Wanning's arms with everyonr staring at him like he's crazy, and the doctor cultivator asking why on earth his fears are so deep and intense that he fell so deeply into the nightmare spell.
- Xue Meng fighting unwaveringly by Mo Ran's side, my heaaaaaarrtttt T_T
- I definitely skimmed through a lot of the Nangong Si plot stuff. Everything's just so long and tedious, and the translation isn't amazing, so it's all very confusing. Plus, I got spoiled by my own book review and found out Nangong Si dies, so I didn't want to get attached at all.
- Oh but I do love some ironic parallels. Mo Ran trying to level with a madman that reminds him of himself... a madman still obsessed with his old Shizun... Ah, fate.
- I didn't remember Shi Mei's sacrifice... How on earth does he end up evil???
- Weird how both Mo Ran and Chu Wanning turn out to have secret ties to Rufeng Sect. Like... okay? Don't see why it matters but alright.
- A confused Xue Meng, after seeing Mo Ran reveal his Nangong blood, asking him "You are my ge, right?" broke me. BROKE ME. Xue Meng is the goodest boy and he's become so much closer to Mo Ran, and Mo Ran appreciates him, and they've learned to respect each other; I'm so scared for Xue Meng to meet Taxian-jun.
- Meanwhile, Taxian-jun is seizing Chu Wanning at the first opportunity and openly stating how hard he's getting. Ffs. Can't wait for the shit-show to continue in light of his resurrection...
- It's unclear whether Chu Wanning heard everything said during Taxian-jun and Mo Ran's fight. This is only MAJORLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
- It's actually pure insanity that we go from zombies showing up and murdering a bunch of people, to Nangong Si's death, to Shi Mei being blinded, to Mo Ran revealing his Nangong blood, to Taxian-jun coming back, to Chu Wanning finding out he's NOT EVEN HUMAN and was CREATED RAISED AS A BLOODY SACRIFICIAL OFFERING-- all without a single bloody break. What the FUCK.

as i mentioned once or twice in my previous reviews of this series, i stumbled upon quite a few spoilers. one might think that ruins the whole reading experience but for me, it only entices me further. this is because like chu wanning, i only really have these bits & pieces flashing through my mind but i can never quite see the full picture.

also like chu wanning, this volume made all those pieces clearer with the true details of nangong si’s death, chu wanning’s origin story, and—something that hit me the hardest bc it was what i anticipated most—the esteemed Emperor Taxian-Jun’s return from the ghost realm.

i think of all the volumes i have read from this series, volume 4 & 6 were probably the most “calm” in comparison to the other books. my time with vol.6 was really well-spent, but there’s just something about the pain and chaos that happens in this volume that took up all my attention (hence me reading this in less than 24 hours). i prefer really heavy angst—and no, i have no idea what that says about me—and heartbreaking dialogues, but i also always do hope by the end that there is a sweet ending.

with txj’s return, he had always only existed in mo ran’s bitter memories of his past self and chu wanning’s blurry recollections. seeing him physically on-page in the present threw the story even more into chaos and i was so invested. i’m really curious of what it’ll entail for the next few volumes….all i know is it’ll guarantee more angst.

with that in mind, the idea of a sweet ending seems laughable with how fractured this cultivation society is and how much turmoil mo ran/taxian-jun & chu wanning have experienced in both lives. but because of much i care for these characters and root for their happiness, i will never underestimate meatbun’s skill in writing a really spectacular ending (despite the fact that all her translated works im reading now aren’t even finished……).

she just puts so much into characters, so much that you can’t even distinguish between the good & the bad. she makes them so flawed and memorable, and while some die in a heartbreaking way, their lives will always stick with the reader as she intended.

this wasn’t just with nangong si in this volume, but also xu shuanglin….i really can’t help but feel gutted at how he ended up someone else’s puppet.

to the next volume, we go!! (just a few more months….)

Ahhh! Honestly he’s trying so hard but that past life just keeps getting closer and closer to ruining him. Those were a hard few chapters to read at the end there, the details painfully realistic.

Some questions were answered but just as many followed. It’s all coming to a head and I can’t wait for the next one now!

“Will Mo Ran lose everything he has gained in this life— including Chu Wanning?”

I bloody hope not! After that though, I wouldn’t blame Wanning for finding it hard to separate Taxian-jun from Mo Ran.

Bring on the next! 😊
