Graphic Depictions of Violence

Transfixed by terror, Trevor watches in horror as his friend Milo is ravaged by a monster. He grabs Lexis and runs for the police station. It will be safe there…won't it?

"He could see that his plan of getting there might have been a delusion. There were twenty beasts on this block, blocking their path to safety. Trevor could see more monsters in the windows of the buildings on either side of the street. The top window of the apartment on his right hand side displayed a twisted shadow puppet show, and then suddenly blood spattered onto the white drapes where the shadows had once cast themselves. Some of the creatures had stayed outside. The monsters eating out in the open gave the place the feel of an open-air restaurant gone horribly wrong. Trying to stay focused, Trevor searched for a street sign like a lost child."

Survive the Infection, by Samuel H. Morris, Jr., is a great depiction of people turned mutants. The action is realistic, and the characters are well developed with believable dialogue. The ending takes a surprising twist, with secrets revealed. The talented Mr. Morris is a writer to watch in the future.

I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I really do not know how I feel about this book. The premise has promise but there were things that just irked me. First off, the dialogue was very stilted and kind of immature for people that were adults. And the back and forth with Trevor and Lexis was just really...I don't have the words for how it was. I did not like the story between them, nor did I really ever care about any of the characters. Second, I really despised the way that Trevor reacted toward Stefan when he found out about him. No man I know would be that way, and I found it heartless.

Like I said the storyline itself has promise, but this book is not for me. I think if an editor went in and helped smooth things out, maybe it could be better. This is just my honest opinion. I give this 2.5 stars, but did not want to mess with Mr. Morris' rating.

Zombie stories are by nature gruesome, and all seem to follow a basic premise.
Samuel Morris has managed to merge a taste of sci-fi into his story, in what is a delightful marriage of suspense, action, and that creep factor that keeps the pages turning. The pacing is steady, with characters that are easy to relate with. Realistic without bogging the reader down with too much info. Scenes are clearly defined while allowing for imagination.
Morris wields his writing talent like a sharp-edged sword, sure to slice through the competition. I look forward to more from this author in the future.
