Balsam Bay #1

From Away

Rate this book
Leo Chapman came to Balsam Bay for a fresh start. After years of burying himself in his work in Toronto, he’s ready for something quieter—something that doesn’t remind him of everything he’s trying to leave behind. But adjusting to small-town life isn’t easy for a man who prefers the hum of a table saw to conversation.

Neve Ross doesn’t have time for distractions. As an interior designer with an eye for detail and a reputation to uphold, she’s spent years proving herself in a town where her family still sees her career as a frivolous pursuit. She knows better than to mix business with anything personal—especially with the quiet, brooding carpenter who avoids small talk like it’s a job requirement.

But the more their paths cross, the more Leo finds himself drawn to Neve’s fire, and the more Neve begins to see the quiet steadiness beneath Leo’s rough edges. In a town where everyone knows your business, some things are impossible to keep hidden, even from yourself—like the way Leo feels when he looks at Neve, or the way she starts to want more than their arrangement calls for.

As their connection grows, will Leo find the courage to let someone in, or will his fears keep him from the kind of home he never knew he needed?

I really liked the vibes in this one. The setting of the small town was great. I liked the intro of the characters and how they all wove together. I also REALLY liked that our MMC Leo was so aware of his mental health. It was very refreshing. Their meet cute was hilarious- misunderstandings can be such a fun one. I also really liked our FMC Neve. She is the local designer and pairing these two was perfect. I appreciated how Leo recognized that he came off a certain way because of his anxiety and so he showed Neve that he paid attention in other ways. Little gifts for her. I also loved that he didn't want recognition- it was enough for HIM to know that he was doing it. I liked these two dancing around their attraction, and Neve trying and failing to set boundaries. I got a LITTLE irritated with the back and forth. I have a hard time when the FMC pushes the MMC away and he listens while the FMC secretly didn't want that IF it is played out too long. That being said I also loved how Leo stood up for Neve and helped show her how incredible she was in all things. Can we also talk about Leo's personality change in the bedroom?? These two were REALLY adorable.

Neve is really enjoying what she is doing. She is trying to get her name out there more and just KNOWS this next job is going to help with that. She is really excited about it. What she is not so excited about is her interaction with the carpenter. I mean what was that? Why was he so rude? But when she brings it up to her friend Billie, she corrects Neve to say no way Leo is a nice guy. Well ok he is nice to look at but not nice. Then their second and third interactions aren't that much better. FINALLY Leo breaks the ice and apologizes for how things have started. He offers her to use some of his space for her office while her house is undergoing repairs. He buys and learns how to make coffee for her. He pays attention to what she likes. And she finds herself liking that. Enough to where she forgets her rules and they share a moment of passion. Well she sets it straight. No more. But then grumpy Leo is back. The more he acts professional and not how he had been around her, the more she realizes she wants THAT version of Leo back. So she gives in to her desires and lets him in. She just has to prove to him that what they share is different than what they have experienced in the past. She has to prove she is IN THIS for the long haul.

Leo has made peace with where he is in life. He has moved to a small town and is doing what he loves- carpentry. He doesn't really think about relationships. He is still processing how his one and only one ended so poorly. But then he meets Neve. The designer he is working with on his best friend's vacation house. He can't seem to be nice around her. Not by design. But his anxiety kicks in and everything is taken the wrong way. He has to figure out how to make her see he is a nice guy. And so he starts to pay attention and try to show her who he really is in other ways. He finds himself enjoying her company. He finds himself offering up his place as her office while her house undergoes repairs. He finds himself looking forward to seeing her and wanting to see her unravel around him. They can't fight this connection. She offers him a no strings situation which he takes while secretly knowing he is going to work to change that. Because he wants this. He hasn't felt like this in a long time. He feels like a new man. But then his anxiety kicks in and he finds himself reacting in the wrong way. He recognizes that Neve is not his ex but is terrified to fully open up. Will Neve be able to handle all that is him?

This was a nice paced easy read. I LOVED the spicy scenes and how Leo like flipped a switch and was a different person. I liked the banter in this one. And like I said I am a sucker for someone who pays attention and whose love language is the little things- that was Leo! I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series- looking at you Billie.

Loved the vibes of this coastal small town ✨
Neve & Leo are perfect for each other, and exactly what the other needs to get over their pasts 🥹

✦ tropes & stuff:
🏠 workplace (house remodel)
🖼 37-year old divorced interior designer fmc with endometriosis
🛠 33-year old tattooed lumberjack carpenter mmc with social anxiety & grief from the loss of his mom (many years prior)
🫶🏼 found family + family baggage/drama
🇨🇦 Canadian setting (Nova Scotia)
🌊 coastal small town
💞 dual 1st person pov

⭐️: 4.5/5
🌶️: open door, several descriptive scenes

💭 what I loved about this one:
- the chapter titles 😍
- all of their “time outs” 🤭
- dancing in the rain 🌧️
- Leo’s attention to detail, especially when it came to Neve
- Neve’s determination to not fall in love, that quickly wavered - how could you not fall in love with a man like Leo?! I loved seeing her soften as she got to know him.
- Leo’s duality of social anxiety but lack of shyness in the bedroom 🙃

🙃 what didn’t quite work for me:
- the writing itself didn’t quite hook me at the beginning, and is a bit more “tell” than “show”
- Didn’t fully understand why Neve’s family was mean about her career, they didn’t seem like those kind of people - I really liked her mom at first, and then nope.

Brand new series! Leo and Neve are pretty special to me since I share a profession with one of them and the gift of social anxiety with the other.
I hope you adore these fools in love as much as I do! I can't wait to start on the next couple's book! Did you guess who they are yet?

A lighthearted yet emotional romance with a solid start to a series of interconnected standalones.

Leo is the newer guy in town, having recently moved to Balsam Bay to escape the memories that haunt him in Toronto. Neve has lived here all her life, never wanting to leave the small town, despite her slightly strained relationship with her family. The two meet when they're both hired for a renovation job for Leo's best friend, Darcy. Leo's social anxiety comes off as animosity to Neve, making their work relationship less than ideal. It's only after an Easter spent with her family that Leo begins to slowly open up to Neve, who is hesitant to get involved in any capacity other than professional. Slowly, but surely, the two let each other in - but will the ghosts of their pasts get the better of them?

This was a sweet read, with emotional hits at the right parts followed with silly things to make you laugh and lift your spirit after. I think Cristina Santos did an amazing job of what social anxiety can feel like: overthinking any thing you could possibly say wrong that you end up not even saying anything at all, questioning if this one little thing has messed up an entire situation, etc. As someone with an anxiety disorder, I can relate to Leo. I think Neve is a fiercely independent character, partially from her family life and partially from her previous marriage. Reading how these two learned to let their walls done was such a pleasure.

I do think there are some parts that definitely could be addressed! I would have loved more information on both main character's pasts: Leo's relationships with his father and Helen, as well as Neve's relationship with her ex-husband. I think even just a little more background could have added a lot of depth into why these two had a hard time opening up. I also would have loved to see a resolution between Neve and her mother, but maybe that will be in another book in the series.

I would recommend this to fans of small town romance who are looking for a heartfelt story with anxiety rep, found family, and fun side characters. Oh, also this had a hefty amount of spice without overdoing it!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for his ARC.

"From Away" follows Leo, a carpenter and a dream boyfriend and Neve, a designer, as their relationship goes from intolerance to steamy romance. There are sparks between them from the very beginning with slight miscommunication and forced proximity.

I laughed every time Neve used funny innuendos and I liked her because she is a very strong, independent woman. I also liked that both of them are Swifties.

I didn't like her family and they always annoyed me when I read about them. They constantly disrespect her and have no idea how hurt she is because of that. Meanwhile, Leo shows her respect and love and his emotional side, everything she needs.

Overall, I give this book 4 stars.

"Time-out," I whisper. Before I can fully inhale, his mouth is on mine.

FROM AWAY was a breath of fresh air kind of book that I just really enjoyed. Small-town vibes, great leads and electric chemistry. I ate this book up.

Highlights

-Small-town setting: Novia Scotia
-Workplace romance (interior designer/contractor)
-Forced proximity
-Hero struggles with social anxiety & grief
-Heroine has Endometriosis
-Child-free by choice
-He secretly pays for her coffee
-Dual pov
-Dirty talk
-Characters in their 30's (33/39)

Memorable Quotes

“You look great. You always look great. And I mean that in a completely non-creepy way. Please, please say something so that I can stop talking.” All right. I didn’t completely shut down or talk like a robot, but this isn’t better.

“Mmm. Leo is like a French baguette. Crusty on the outside but super-soft on the inside."

"I like you, Leo. It takes me by surprise sometimes when you use so many words, but I enjoy hearing what you have to say. The dirty words, the sweet words, even your gruff incomplete
sentences."

I more than like Neve. I liked her when I met her, but every day since, that like has grown and grown, and now it’s morphing into something else. Something I fear she’s nowhere near ready for.

“I love you,” my mouth begs to scream. “I love you,” my heart thrums against her hand. “I love you,” my touch attempts to brand into her skin.

As a divorced 36 year old woman who has suffered from endometriosis and mental health issues, I have never felt more seen or represented in a book.

This is a beautiful love story about fresh starts, overcoming heartbreak, healing, and chasing your professional dreams. Neve & Leo are truly what never giving up looks like. Through hardships, heartbreaks, and anxiety, they still find one another. It gives someone like myself hope that they have their second chance out there too.

This will now be one of my favorites reads of all time. I wish I could read this for the first time a thousand times over.

“Thank you. I can’t tell you what it means to feel this....seen.” - Neve

ARC reader!
What can I say, from the moment Cristina referenced „the garden state“ to the moment she spoilers the next book in this new series I was hooked.
The details in all her books are mind blowing and you always feel like you get to know the characters through and trough.
This book shows all the troubles these characters go through and is so real you can’t help but feel with them, cry with them and be happy with them!
Christina, it’s an honor to „read you grow“ as an author and I keep falling in love with your characters! Please write many more stories, I’ll happily read them all!!

This book is the story of two people with their own stories, their way to healing and to each other and it’s heartwarming and steamy and beautiful and just lovely to read!

✨ARC review✨

I thought this book was really promising and although there were a lot of things I really liked, overall it just wasn’t for me.

From Away follows new-to-town carpenter Leo and über-focused interior designer Neve as they work together on various projects and try to stay professional despite their growing connection. I liked Leo and Neve; they felt very real and had a lot of baggage that made them more dimensional. This book has a lot of funny moments while maintaining a lot of emotion at its heart.

Unfortunately, there were a lot of little things that on their own wouldn’t have turned me off from this book, but they accumulated into something that was hard for me to get through at times. The dialogue was super cringy and hyper-sexual. There was practically no driving plot; the little plot we did have stemmed from emotional immaturity, and many little side plots didn’t feel resolved by the end. There were also an uncomfortable number of Taylor Swift references (I counted at least 7) that felt extremely out of place and completely removed me from the story every time they came up (and I’m a TS fan!).

Although this book ultimately wasn’t for me, it still had a lot of good character moments and fun elements. I think fans of Tessa Bailey and Lucy Score would really enjoy this!

This is the first book in the Balsam Bay series. Thank you Cristina for opportunity to read From Away and fall back in love with Nova Scotia with this captivating love story of Leo and Neve.

Leo is a “come from away” having recently moved from Toronto to a small southern nova scotia town. He’s reserved and can come across grumpy to those that don’t know him. Neve is a divorced small business owner that wants to build her business with little help and always makes sure to keep things professional. Circumstances keep bringing them together, but past life experiences weigh heavy for both. Do either have the courage to fight past the fear to let someone in?

So refreshing reading a novel where the main characters are in their mid to late 30s. It brings more life experience and history to their characters and personalities. The mental health representation built in gave depth to the characters and the entire novel was a smooth read. Meaning it flowed easy, nothing felt forced or too fast and I never felt I missed something throughout the book.

The fun bits: The mannerisms made me laugh out loud. Some of it more so because of the Canadian like sarcasm and sayings. Love the inner dialogue of both the main characters, and it has my favourite micro trope: Nicknames 🩵
You can’t but swoon over Leo. He has this way of making people feel seen, it’s so so adorable🫦
There is an aspect of miscommunication, but I’d say more so a lack of communication, many times due to anxiety, confidence experiences, or deep set feelings. But I feel that it makes the characters relatable.

This novel made me miss Nova Scotia while also making me feel I was there with the beautiful descriptions of the people and landscapes. I’m so grateful to get to go back this summer for a few days to enjoy it all again💞.

And I can’t wait for next in the series with Mr. Darcy and Billie. That should be fun 😉

From Away is a story that pulls you in from the very beginning, leaving you wanting to know more. The characters are diverse, real, and fun.
I enjoyed seeing the struggles both characters faced, though I wish we had seen more of how they worked through them. Maybe if the intimate scenes had come a bit later, we could’ve gotten more conversations between the main characters. I also wanted to see Neve stand up to her family more and have them truly acknowledge her—but I can’t really judge her, life is like that sometimes. Still, since it's fiction, I was hoping for something a bit more uplifting than what we deal with day to day.

In my mind, Leo has romantic scenes where he teaches Neve how to work with wood. Do you *know* how erotic it is to read about hands working with wood???

I didn’t connect much with the nicknames they gave each other—though that’s more of a me thing, since I’ve always found nicknames kind of cringey. Another thing is that their first intimate scene felt rushed in the context of the story; it seemed a bit out of character. The pacing finds its balance afterward and it works, but that first time felt off.

I really hope we get to keep exploring this cozy little town, especially since it ends on such a good cliffhanger for the next couple—OMG!

Thank you so much to Luna Literary Management and Cristina Santos for trusting me with an advanced copy and for bringing these books into the world!

From Away is the first in the Balsam Bay Series by Cristina Santos. I was very excited to read this book because I loved Cristina’s other books. And surprise: I loved this one too!

It was well-written, perfectly paced and the balance between the sweet and the spicy moments was excellent.

Leo is the new guy in town and he’s so kind and vulnerable. Neve is the hometown girl and she’s loyal and confident. They’re both great and relatable characters. Reading about their struggles and personal experiences was such a rollercoaster of emotions. They were so amazing together and I loved seeing them get to know each other and fall in love.

A lighthearted and emotional book that made me laugh, cry and swoon. It’s a perfect small town romance with a heartwarming and beautiful story. I’m excited for the next books in this series and I can’t wait for everyone to read this one!

Leo, a carpenter lumberjack with social anxiety but also a kind heart moves from Toronto to Balsam Bay, a fictional town in Canada. After ending a long term relationship, he is determined to start a new life and his best friend sets him up with a project to help build for interior designer Neve. Neve has spent her entire life in this little town and struggling to find someone who can love her but not want marriage or kids.
Things between them are rocky in the beginning but soon bloom into a tender romance.
Such a sweet and emotional read with friendly, romantic small town vibes with fun side characters. A+ for the Enjoyable spice ;)

Very cute, forced proximity trope type of story. I liked how fiercely independent and outgoing Neve is and adored Leo’s sweetness, politeness and related to him as an anxious person.

Wishing Balsam Bay was a real town because now I want to visit it.

ARC review from Netgalley.

I loved every minute with these two, even the uncomfortable ones.

Neve is so sure of herself despite having to defend her career at every turn to her family. She knows who she is and she isn't willing to compromise that and for that alone I loved her. Neve is also fiercely loyal... to both her friends and her coffee addiction.

Leo, oh my heart. This soft, complicated man who is struggling to overcome his demons, seems to know what he wants only to have to fight his doubts. He's the character we get the most growth from and the vulnerability in that was so beautifully written. He is so damn worth being patient for.

Their chemistry, *fans face*, right from the jump you can feel the tension in the air, like on a humid summer day when you know a storm is coming. Except when the storm comes for these two, wow! They are HOT! But it's not just their physical chemistry that Santos covers, Leo and Neve just work. She's there for his quiet moments and he's there for her pain filled ones. You truly believe that they'll stick by one another through all the things, good or bad.

The east coast vibes were spectacular, I could practically smell the sea air, my finger hovered over flights to Nova Scotia more than once.

I was also wondering what I needed to renovate in my home because Neve had me itching to paint something. The design stuff was like watching a cozy HGTV show without the corny jokes.

Speaking of jokes, I laughed out loud more times than I can remember. Neve in particular is hilarious, even when she's not intending to be.

From Away is one of those books I'll think about when I hear a gull cry or wave crash. The kind of book that when you finish, you sigh because everything seems right in the world.

It's such a good start to the series and I cannot wait to see what Santos has in store for us because there are so many side characters I am desperate for more of!

Yes, Leo’s first impression with Neve was less than stellar but social anxiety took over. But Leo is determined to quietly make it up to Neve because he knows exactly how amazing she is. A visionary and a professional who isn't respected by her family for following her dreams. In an industry filled with men, Neve and her friend's team need to work harder and smarter to maintain respect so she does not have time for the grumpy lumberjack, no matter how drawn to him she is.

I wanted to yell at Neve at the beginning because I had information she didn't but, being a fictional character and all, she couldn't hear me defending him. But once she sees behind the anxious curtain, she couldn't help but be team Leo like the rest of us. They were so damn cute together throughout the whole book! Leo's quiet support helps Neve shine while Neve's consistent acceptance allows Leo to breathe and be himself. Oh my goodness I loved them so much!!!!

Leo is the stuff book boyfriends are made of.

I have a weak spot for soft, vulnerable, gentle men in my books and Leo hit that nose on the head. He’s a little misunderstood from the start, but he’s not afraid to be emotional or tender.

And that’s what this entire book was. Tender. Leo and Neve were perfectly suited for each other. Their heat crackled off the page and I often found myself grinning along with them.

This is only my second Cristina book, but I know I’ll be reading them all at some point.

The love story was absolutely beautiful but I loved the mental health representation. Everything felt incredibly realistic. I ADORED that Leo and Neve are in their 30s, they are so well rounded and their back stories are interesting. I don't know what I need to do to convince you, but you should read this!!

This is my new favorite book. Cristina’s writing is such a comfort to me. That familiarity feels like coming home and like the biggest hug!

Leo and Neve are just perfect to me and for each other. My man Leo was down bad for Neve and I ate it up. Their banter and the tension between them was everything I wanted and needed! 🥹

I think Cristina made something truly spectacular with From Away! And everything made me long for a place I’ve never been to or even seen before - but somehow everything played out like a perfect movie in my mind ♥️

Brand new series alert! And it's off to a great start! From Away features a lumberjack MMC, a designer FMC, home renovations, Canadian content, lattes, sexy spice and a cast of wonderful secondary characters.

Leo and Neve are great, both separately and together. Their chemistry is undeniable and when they get together it's hot, hot, hot! I love their personalities, the way they show their vulnerable sides, the way they sort of grow together and I love their jobs!

I want to live in the small town of Balsam Bay! It sounds perfect! Cute cafes, small shops, cozy homes, friendly people, what's not to love!? It was the perfect setting for this love story and I can't wait to continue on in this series! Thanks for a great read, Cristina!

I received a review copy and these are my thoughts:

Cristina does it again! From Away is beautiful story about two people who’ve had their hearts broken and go on a healing journey together - learning, once again, to trust and to love and be loved. I loved Neve and Leo. He was quiet and soft spoken and she was fiery and passionate. Together, they were sweet and endearing and also very relatable.

I appreciated their growth both individually and as a couple. In the beginning, they are both so clueless because they are both terrible at communicating! Leo suffers from anxiety so when he gets overwhelmed, his communication skills go out the window and Neve can’t seem to be able to read him. Assuming he just doesn’t like her, she’s reluctant to let him know how his “lack of words” affect and confuse her. I did a happy dance when Leo found his words in chapter 21 and never looked back!

When neither of them was overthinking, they worked really well as a team. I really liked that they had mutual admiration for each other’s work and skills.

The anxiety and endometriosis rep, were both done in a realistic way, showcasing how vulnerable people become at their lowest and that kindness and respect go a long way to make them feel like they aren’t “too much” (because they aren’t).

Chapter 21 will have you in a fit of laughter to begin with and fanning yourself by the end. Leo turned out to be quite the dirty talker too.

I appreciated that the 3rd act hiccup was quickly resolved and in a mature way.

I loved Darcy (Leo’s best friend) and Billie (Neve’s best friend).

The pace was perfect and the chapters were short - which I very much appreciated!! I devoured this book!

If you like small town, workplace romance, lots of banter and spice and and a heartwarming HEA, then this is for you!

⭐️ 5/5 stars – Listen, this book gets you. It’s slow-burn in that deeply satisfying way where your heart is melting long before your clothes are, and Leo? He’s a cinnamon roll in flannel and social anxiety. Neve is chaotic good energy, and watching them fall for each other made my insides all gooey.

🌶️ 3/5 Spice Rating –It’s a slow burn, but not the kind that teases and stalls—the kind that builds trust and tension until it snaps. Leo starts off all buttoned-up and barely-speaking, but once he’s in? He is in. The anxiety slips away and what’s left is a man who worships, touches like he means it, and cannot get enough.

🖤 1/5 Darkness Rating –No major triggers here—just some beautifully real moments about grief, loneliness, social anxiety and learning to be seen. It’s tender without being heavy, and honestly? It’s the emotional equivalent of a vanilla brown sugar oat latte.

What I Loved:

This story had me soft smiling through entire chapters. I loved how Neve was all sass and spark on the outside, but underneath? She just wanted someone to show up and stay. And Leo—ugh, Leo—he’s the emotionally constipated, woodworking grump of my dreams. The way his love shows up in handmade cabinet, rebuilt hutch doors, and perfectly timed lattes? He’s not just speaking my love language—he’s fluent in Acts of Service, and I was loving for it. #bookhusband I adored how their connection felt earned—how we got to see the tension, the missteps, the quiet yearning, and then those tiny, intentional moments of care that grew into something real. It’s the kind of romance that isn’t about grand gestures but about showing up, over and over, until it becomes something you trust.

The Story (No Spoilers!):

Neve’s a bold, no-time-for-BS interior designer with big plans and even bigger opinions. Leo’s a quiet, flannel-wrapped carpenter who’d rather rebuild a century-old hutch than make small talk. Their first meeting? A filthy disaster, and it only gets better from there. He grunts. She glares. And somehow it turns into the softest, most ugh-I-love-them kind of slow-burn.

This book isn’t flashy with its love—it’s tender. It’s “I noticed how you take your coffee” and “I fixed this broken thing without you asking.” The kind of romance that feels real because it’s built on all the quiet, consistent ways we show up for someone when it matters.

Final thoughts:

I didn’t expect to get so soft over cabinet doors and latte orders, but here we are. This book took its time in the best way, and by the end, I was fully attached and maybe a little in love with a man who barely speaks. It’s a slow, quiet kind of romance—but it feels big, because every small moment matters. Cristina Santos writes with this subtle kind of magic—like she knows exactly how to thread humor, heartache, and tenderness through a single glance or a half-spoken sentence. Nothing is wasted, and somehow it all lands exactly where it should.

And as someone who deals with social anxiety, I felt Leo’s struggle in my bones. The overthinking, the shutdowns, the way you care so deeply but still can’t always get the words out—it was written with so much care and truth, I saw myself in him more than I expected. This isn’t just a romance—it’s about being seen, being safe, and learning how to love without losing yourself. I already miss them, and I’ll be counting down until we’re back in Balsam Bay.

From Away by Cristina Santos is the kind of romance that wraps around you like your favorite cozy sweater. It feels warm, comforting, and had just the right amount of emotional moments. Set against the breezy backdrop of Balsam Bay, this story gave me all the small town, east coast feels I didn’t know I was craving. I could practically smell the salty sea air and hear the creak of floorboards in those charming coastal homes.

Leo Chapman is easily one of the most unique and relatable MMCs I’ve read in a long time. His social anxiety wasn’t just a quirk; it was layered, real, and deeply human. Cristina Santos did such a thoughtful job portraying what anxiety can feel like: the silence that comes from overthinking, the self-doubt that lingers long after a conversation ends. Being inside Leo’s head made me feel seen in a way few books ever have.

And then there’s Neve. She is fierce, funny, and emotionally guarded. Watching her slowly soften as she gets to know Leo, while still standing firm in who she is, was such a rewarding experience. Their chemistry was palpable and although it was a slow burn, I felt so connected to them. From forced proximity to stolen glances and quiet conversations, you could feel the tension simmering under every interaction. And when that tension finally breaks? Perfection.

I adored the "just sex" arrangement that spiraled into something so much more meaningful. These two get each other in a way no one else has, and their journey felt earned. The found family vibes, the nosy neighbors, and the community of Balsam Bay made it all the more endearing. Side characters like Matt, Billie, and Pete added charm and depth and I’m already desperate for their stories next!

If I had any tiny critique, it’s that I wish we had a little more backstory, particularly about Leo’s relationship with Helen and his father, and Neve’s history with her ex-husband. Also, some resolution with Neve’s mother would’ve added an extra layer of closure. But maybe Cristina Santos is saving that for another book in the series.

This is more than just a romance. It’s about starting over, healing old wounds, and allowing yourself to be truly known. As someone in her mid-thirties who has walked through mental health challenges and complex family dynamics, this story hit home. From Away is now etched into my heart, the kind of book I’ll think about every time I hear a seagull or smell fresh paint.

Synopsis:
Leo Chapman moves to Balsam Bay seeking a peaceful escape from his hectic life in Toronto, hoping to leave his past behind. A reserved carpenter, he struggles to fit into small-town life and prefers work over socializing. Neve Ross, a dedicated interior designer, is focused on building her career and earning respect in a town where her profession isn’t taken seriously by her family. She avoids personal entanglements—especially with someone like Leo. But as they continue to cross paths, their mutual attraction becomes harder to ignore. Leo is drawn to Neve’s passion, while she begins to see the strength in his quiet presence. In a town where secrets are hard to keep, their growing bond challenges them both to confront their fears. Will Leo be able to open his heart, or will he let his past stand in the way of a future with Neve?

Wow wow wow Leo omg for such a quiet man he has such a filthy mouth 🤭

“Dance with me snow” watch me while I sob when they were dancing in the rain together 😭

Reasons why Leo is the best book boyfriend:
✨He bought her a freaking coffee maker and he doesn’t drink coffee he is so whipped
✨He has a tab to pay for all of her coffees he is honestly the dream man
✨The way he cares for Neve when she is in pain from her menstrual cycle and endometriosis (as someone who can relate this meant the world to me to read 😭🫶🏻)

I felt so connected to Leo when he spoke about his struggles with anxiety and his panic attacks the writing felt so real about the experience, with negative thinking and being stuck in that cycle.

Neve was a strong character and I loved that she knew what she wanted and didn’t give up on her career, making a life for herself that she was truly happy in after her divorce.
Darcy and Leo’s friendship is everything to me the support Darcy gives Leo is so genuine and made me cry with the speech he gave Leo when he was spiralling. Having a friend like that is the best thing in the world.

Neve and Leo’s relationship was written so beautifully and the development is one of the best I’ve ever read I love it !
"You have me forever, too. My heart. My love. My life."

THE ENDING !! Well now I need the next book immediately I can’t wait !!

I recommend this book 100% it was so stunning and the writing had me hooked from page one and the characters are so worth the read, there are many other amazing things in this book but no spoilers !!

Book comes out on the 5th May 2025 🫶🏻

Cristina did it again 🤩
I couldn't put it down and devoured the book in one day 😁
In my opinion, Cristina's books are always a bit "different". But please don't ask me why. It's just a feeling.
One thing is for sure, the MCs always have some kind of mental health or health issues.

Leo has extreme anxieties. Especially social anxieties. He is such a cutie. He is respected and loved by everyone, but he has things in his past he can't forget 😔
Some people may not like love at first sight, but just because Leo felt this way, it doesn't mean everything is easy 😎 That would be too simple for a Cristina Santos book 🙈
Even this all his problems, I loved Leo so much 🩷 And I loved Neve. She is a strong, independent woman. Unfortunately, her parents won't see that 😔 God, honestly, what's wrong with them? They made me really angry 🤬 She also has Endometriosis.

I have to say I was a bit confused at the beginning because of Darcy and Billie. Darcy is Leo's best friend. Male best friend! And Billie is Neve's best friend. Female best friend. Yeah, nicknames can be confusing 🤣 But as my brain finally got it, I loved it. And I loved them both. They are funny 🤣 Especially Billie. Oh, I think her book (I hope she gets one) will be a bit of a catastrophe 🙈 She is an even stronger woman than Neve. Yes, I'm a bit afraid of her 😎

I loved that most of the people who worked on the construction site for the renovation of Darcy's house were women. Yes, women can be in construction as well. 💪

Thanks to the author and @lunaliterary.management for trusting me with an ARC.

Leo is the newcomer in town, having just relocated to Balsam Bay to flee the memories that trouble him in Toronto. Neve has spent her entire life in this small town, never desiring to depart, even though her relationship with her family is somewhat strained. The two encounter each other when they are both employed for a renovation project for Leo's close friend, Darcy. Leo's social anxiety presents itself as hostility to Neve, resulting in a less than satisfactory work relationship. It is only following an Easter with her family that Leo starts to gradually share with Neve, who is reluctant to engage in any way beyond a professional relationship. Gradually, yet steadily, the two allowed each other to enter their lives - but will the specters of their histories overwhelm them?

I desire to relocate to Balsam Bay— I want Matt to prepare lattes for me, and I want to have drinks with Billie. I desire a friendship similar to Pete and Leo's… I want Neve to adorn my home.

This is an enchanting love tale about new beginnings, getting past heartbreak, finding healing, and pursuing your career aspirations. Neve & Leo exemplify the essence of persistence. Amidst struggles, sorrow, and worry, they continue to discover each other. It provides individuals like me with hope that a second opportunity exists for them as well.

The vibes on the east coast were amazing; I could nearly scent the ocean breeze, and I found myself hovering over flights to Nova Scotia multiple times.

The atmosphere of the east coast was incredible; I could almost taste the ocean breeze, and I found myself hovering over flights to Nova Scotia several times.

I was also curious about what I should update in my house since Neve made me eager to paint something. The design elements felt similar to enjoying a warm HGTV program minus the cheesy humor.

✨Book Review: From Away✨
Author: Cristina Santos

Out of Focus follows Leo and Neve, two people who show us that first impressions aren’t always the best impressions. Neve is a designer in a family full of teachers. Leo has uprooted his life and quit his corporate job to move to Balsam Bay and put his carpentry skills to use. What starts as a terrible first impression eventually blossoms into a great friendship and ultimately, more.

This was not my first Cristina Santos book and it definitely will not be my last. The way I ran to sign up for this ARC because I love the way Cristina writes was unreal. As with her last book, it was absolutely perfect. One of the things I loved the most was the mental health rep which was interwoven throughout the entire story. Leo has social anxiety and the author handles it in such a beautiful way, explaining his feelings throughout the story while not letting it completely define his character.

I felt all the emotions with this one. I cried (repeatedly) at the many, MANY, vulnerable moments these two had together. I ran home after work wanting to get right back into the story.
This is the first book in a new series by Cristina, so if you’ve been wanting to read her work, this is the perfect time to jump in.

This book is perfect for people who like:
💫Mental Health Rep.
💫Enemies/Friends to lovers
💫Small Town romance
💫Workplace romance

I could go on about this book and how wonderful it was for a long time. But, quite simply, read this book. It’s amazing. Ten out of ten would recommend. No notes whatsoever.

A very special thank you to NetGalley and the author for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
