Brothers in Arms, Book 12

Devlin O'Shaughnessy has loved Kitty Markham since the first time they saw each other when they were too young and not nearly innocent enough. Kitty has loved him just as long. But she fell in love with Dr. Thomas Peters in the same fashion: hard and instantly. She's loved him that way, silently, secretly, for years.

When Thom finally gets lost in his endless stream of liquor and sex to dull the pain of his violent dreams and bloody memories, Kitty will enlist Devlin's help to pull him out and sober him up. And maybe, just maybe, she'll finally get what she's always wanted and her two men have always needed: her, and each other.

I've never read anything by this author before and I'm not sure how I came by this book. I suspect it might've been free on aRe. Anyway, I found it on my Kindle and gave it a shot. It's book 12 in a series and from reading it, it would seem all the other books are about menage relationships, too. I've read menage before, but I don't generally go looking for it. Usually, it makes me a bit uncomfortable, especially if it's a long term relationship for the three people. I don't see how everyone can feel equal and secure, but those are probably my own insecurities coming through. Either way, this really did not do it for me at all. The characters were very one dimensional. They are already fascinated or in love with each other, so you're thrown in to the relationship without really seeing it grow. The heroes are described one way, but come off as the opposite in some instances. Thom, the doctor, who is drunk and fucking his patients turns out to be pretty inexperienced when it's all said and done. And that just seems impossible when it's described that he's "fucked" at least five times in one day - men and woman. Devlin is the mob guy and seems like the most appealing hero, but he's all talk. The heroine is forth-right about sex and that seems to be about all she has going for her. Mostly, she just seems a bit selfish.

This was just okay for me. I won't look for any other books in the series.

4.5 stars. The blurb pretty much sums up the story, and I just loved it. Devlin and Kitty have been in love forever. He killed the man that owned both of them and set her up with a protector while he built up his shady empire. After her protector died they got together and together they are wonderful. They fit like puzzle pieces and are so hot together.

But Kitty loves Tom too. And when he comes back from the war, traumatized and selling himself in the name of medicine, she makes Devlin bring him to her home to sober him up and hopefully bring him in to Dev and her relationship.

The move is slow but steady and Tom's not sure of his place but he and Dev finally get together and I loved Kitty's growling when she found out because she'd tried to get them together for weeks and wanted to be there when it happened. The three of them are as good together as she and Dev are. But Dev and Tom have their demons. They both don't think they are good enough for Kitty and try and push her towards the other. Meantime Kitty's has become respectable and is doing everything she can to make Dev respectable too.

Some misunderstandings ensue, a little kidnapping, a little help from the crown, and the three of them finally get a chance to make a life together away from the violence of the street.

I just loved the characters in this one. It may be my favorite of the series.

SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)

Kitty and Devlin have been together for many years. They grew up alongside each other after being introduced to lives of whoring and crime far too young. But they had each other to lean on and love.

Now Kitty has dreams of bringing Thom into their relationship. Because she has (openly) had feelings for him for years and has seen the success of her friends' threesome relationships.

Devlin is hesitant at first, but then agrees because he believes that Thom can give Kitty a respectable kind of life that he can't.

Only they all start to fall in love -- Devlin and Thom included. So can they all live and love together like Kitty has dreamed of for years?

REVIEW:

I enjoyed this one a lot more than the last several books. But I enjoyed the beginning of it more than where it ended up.

We met Kitty and Devlin many books ago in the series and I was always curious about them. Especially the sexy crime lord with a soft spot for Kitty.

Devlin did not disappoint. He's so dominant and sexy. I loved his personality and that kind of attitude of wanting to take care of everyone. His brand of dominance was so sexy and I loved him. I suppose the only thing I didn't love about him was him trying to leave Kitty and Thom "for their own good" because he thought they were in danger with him. I didn't like that.

Thom is okay. He starts off a big mess. But with the help of Dev and Kitty he is able to pull his life back together. I loved how all-in he is with both of them.

I loved Kitty and her plans for both of them. She's the kind of woman who knows what she wants and goes for it. Although she did make some rather dumb decisions in regards to "helping" Dev get out of the crime business.

I loved the beginning of the book and it was all steamy and good. But I found the ending kind of disappointing.

I kind of thought Devlin being the crime lord of London was a little sexy and I didn't like that Kitty got him out of it. I know, I'm weird. But I didn't like this turn of events.

But at the same time I am glad they were all happy with where they ended up. I just wasn't a big fan of how it turned out.

Overall though it was a a good read. I enjoyed the romance between the three of them and the steam was sexy as always.

The characters in this story were not quite known, however, what a pleasant surprise this story turned out to be. A mob boss, a former prostitute and a drunk doctor all find love and how. There is murder, there is angst, there is trauma, there is faith, there is hope, there is understanding and there is love.
There is also misunderstandings, everyone backing away from the love that they should be grabbing onto with both hands and silly little female characters unfortunately, who gets told off by Sir Barnabas and Mr Hastings, who is always in trouble with his boss.
Thom has been in love with Kitty for ages but he is half a man now with all the nightmares he sees when he was at war, he can't be a doctor anymore and sells sex for cures. Mob Boss Devlin has to find Doc to come and save a woman in his care who is dying because of childbirth. Devlin is annoyed with the drunk doctor and cannot see the lure that Kitty sees. Kitty eventually gets Devlin to help sober up Doc and Devlin decides he will have to walk away when Doc is clean, since he is much more respectable for Kitty. Doc meanwhile will not stay with Kitty if Devlin is not there. In between all this, there is Devlin's life in danger from another mob boss and Kitty puts him and Doc in even more danger. That was quite painful to read to be honest.
She didn't seem to bring much to the relationship as it was, even with the sex being so great between all of them, there was more push and pull between the Doc and Devlin. The ending was a little unbelievable and doest really sit well with the story and felt like a cop out, but it was difficult to see any other conclusion for this story. However, more and more it is more obvious that Ms. Kane has more drama in a same sex relationship and writes it so well, that the female role seems a little contrived and annoying at times. This one particularly was quite annoying.

Read this for:
Hot mob boss protecting the Doc's virtue
Kitty and her sex scenes with Devlin
Devlin and Doc's chemistry
Mr Hastings and his troublesome assignment
Kitty and her idiotic plan
Doc and Devlin
Sir Barnabas the boss and his troublesome employee Mr. Hastings
Mob boss drama
Anticlimatic ending but lots of hot steamy sex

I loved all the main characters in this story they are all so believable. I also enjoyed that these characters were more main stream for the time than most of the regency books. I am sure that there are so many medical personnel that can identify with Dr. Thomas Peters. War isn't any more civilized now than it was back then. Yes we have had advances but it still leaves lives ruined and bodies maimed and broken and minds shattered.

I enjoyed the way that each of the people help heal the other. I also like that this was more about the common people. Devlin will be added to my list of alpha male characters that I would love to meet. I have loved each book in this series and look for each new one.

RRRC - 2019 May Monthly Challenge - a misunderstanding/miscommunication

(Thom believed he was not worthy of either Kitty or Devlin, as the war broke him. Then Devlin believed Kitty be better off with Thom; since he was a doctor and could afford giving Kitty an affluence lifestyle.)

Again, I loved this story and am addicted to the series. I'll be re-reading this series over and over...

I love this series! The characters come alive and feel so real while reading this and the stick with you afterwards. The dialogue and the down to earth way the characters interact is great. Most of all I love that the other characters from the other books are revisited so we get a peek at all of their futures.

Wow, this book was awesome. I couldn't put it down. I have loved this series for a while now and was waiting to read Kitty's story.

Kitty, Devlin and Thom have worked hard to overcome things in their past. Thom has loved Kitty for years but doesn't think he is good enough for her. Devlin and Kitty are lovers and have been for years. Devlin knows that he will one day have to leave Kitty since he is a crime boss. Kitty doesn't care about what the boys think. She knows that they can make a relationship work. She wants what her friends have-love and her two men. Kitty tries to make that happen which causes more problems for Devlin than she thought. Thom needs to sober up and come to turns with his nightmares from the war. Can they find a way to make it all work?

Highly recommend this series and this author.

Technically, I didn't read this book. I won the audiobook from the author through a contest. But whether reading or listening to it, this was a splendid addition to the Brothers in Arms series. I've followed this series from the beginning (12 books ago) and each one is well written with such complex characters. Devlin has always been that character that you've wanted to know more about. And Kitty has been patiently waiting in the background since book 1 for her story to be told. And then there's Dr. Thom Peters. We knew him most in Gideon, Sarah, and Charles's story. He was the most complex of the 3 characters. And the one who broke my heart the most. Beautifully written. I recommend this book and all the books in the Brothers in Arms series.

How does Samantha Kane keep all of her characters straight in her head? We met Kitty in The Courage to Love! Glad she has her own story now. Devlin is a street gangster with a heart of gold, and Dr Peters is just suffering with PTSD so badly that he can't sleep without being drunk. They all need each other. Some scenes are very memorable, and we are introduced to a new character with a lot of potential. This series continues to be on my "must be read the day it comes out" list!

Kitty finally has the chance to invite Dr. Thom into her and Devlin's private life when he's in bad shape. Her dreams and fantasies might just come true that the both of her men will make a happy trio......

This is #12 of the Brothers In Arms series and we have a cameo of Gideon and others from the previous books so it was nice to catch up. Hot smexy times in the 1800's.

Final Score - 4 Stars!

Didn't like that there was no epilogue. Sorely needed to complete story IMO.

Love the ménage scenes and the obvious affection Kitty, Devlin, and Thom has for one another.

I hope this series continues...

This BiA novel is more gritty than the others. Devlin is a crime boss and Kitty is a former prostitute. It is a passionate read.
