A straight up masterpiece. This collects the first 3 Japanese volumes of Vinland Saga and reading it was an amazing experience. The art is phenomenal and the story and its characters really just leap off the page. It’s definitely rooted in history, but it doesn’t feel dull or exposition-filled at all. Thorfinn is a phenomenal protagonist and I can’t wait to follow him on his journey.
Bu ilk cilt, Thorfinn’in motivasyonlarının kökenini anlamamıza olanak tanıyor.
Started this series to get over my Berserk slump, and man was it worth it.
The art work is great, I love the weight Makoto gives to his character's frames, and the way he draws their strength. The action scenes were great, and there's some real intrigue to story and plot hooks. The research is also great as well, just everything about this manga was great.
After watching Season 2 of Vinland Saga I just had to embark on the manga journey. This is my first time owning any sort of manga so what better start than this.
I've never felt the words "page turner" as strong as I did with this story. Each chapter felt both necessary and meaningful in their own way as we get introduced to the harsh and violent world of Vikings. And the artwork, beautifully crafted by Makoto Yukimura, breathes life into the Viking era, transporting readers to a time of epic battles.
Book One of the Vinland Saga deluxe editions is one that presents us with the themes of revenge, violence and pride. Thorfinn, the main character, emerges as a figure consumed by a singular purpose: vengeance. We also get to meet other characters such as Thors (Thorfinn's father), Askeladd, Leif, etc. Having seen the anime before the manga I know these themes and characters stay relevant throughout the entirety of the story, but what really stood out to me was the unfolding of character development which I'm anxious to reach within the manga.
We also get to enjoy new and exclusive bonus illustrations, interviews, and behind-the-scenes details never before translated. It was fun to read Yukimura's notes and thoughts as I went through each volume as it added a layer of personality and a deeper understanding of the Viking lifestyle.
First of all, what a bizarre image Goodreads is using for this book. Is it to remind everyone this hardcover manga is a massive tome? The angled look is a bit off putting.
This is as slow burn as early game of thrones episodes, but the pay off is impressive by the end. Rich historical fiction detail and texture abounds, the art is vast, crisp and epic, and the core characters grow into engaging heroes and antiheroes by the end. If the rest of the series is like the second half of this edition, we are in for a great, massive Viking yarn.
This a stunning edition as well - easily outpacing Dark Horse deluxe editions on binding quality and book design by a nose. But god the price. They aren’t letting these go for cheap!
I loved everything about Vinland Saga; the artwork, the story, the characters, the pacing.
The best part of the story is the protagonist, Thorfinn, is loosely based on a Viking merchant in the late 900's. Yes we run into the big names of the time like; Loki, Ragnar and Lief, but they aren't the main story line like so many other Viking tales.
I’ve never been huge on manga, but this seems to come up in comic, history, and fiction recommendations far too often to ignore. I really ended up enjoying Vinland Saga and it’s terrifically dynamic artwork.
It’s really nice to have something just off the beaten path that reads quickly and is easy to pick up and put down. I’m on board for the rest of this series!
Interesting so far but some pretty big things get skipped over very quickly. Why did he join the bad guys? Where did the second knife come from? Lots of history gets dropped but not fleshed out as a way to skip through time. Overall its a decent read but still plenty room for improvement in the next book.
Makoto Yukimura's 'Planetes' is my favourite manga ever – a perfect piece of humanist sci fi. Yet for years I never picked up Vinland Saga. The world of Vikings just didn't have the same appeal as astronauts. Or so I thought.
Vinland Saga is about violence, and choosing not to be violent. It carries on many of the same themes as Planetes, but in a more brutal world. In space, it's the unforgiving laws of physics that can kill you. In the Danelaw during the Viking raids, it's your fellow men. It's a world where the messages of Odin and Jesus compete, and the philosophy of its inhabitants can be as alien as anything you find in space.
Vinland Saga's pace is slow, but it uses its time well. Yukimura relishes in the small details and background characters - casual moments showing entire lives happening outside the panel. The history is a curious mixture of deeply researched and the cartoonishly anime (characters can be 2 metres tall, leap across ships, and sail down waterfalls), but it works. Yukimura's art (supported by 4 artists) has come a long way since Planetes too, and it consistently looks great, with stark battle scenes contrasted with expressive faces.
I'm looking forward to continuing this series - unlike Planetes, which only got 4 volumes, Vinland Saga is on 28 and counting, so there's a long way to go yet.
Vinland Saga walks a close line between shonen battle manga and historical fiction. The art style is realistic, detailed, and historically accurate, except for the named characters who are action figures. The plot spares nothing of the horrors of war as a mercenary and the gradual change from Norse to Christian ethics, except for the named characters who are superheroes and represent Themes. Basically, it's Rurouni Kenshin in the Danelaw. I like where the story is going but I wish it would get there a little faster.
The deluxe format is delightful, but does Yukimura's art no favors by blowing it up to 150% on the shelf next to Vagabond and Berserk. I love the bonus material, more artists should spotlight their assistants!
This Manga really captures you, even if you’re not into the whole Historical/Viking genre, you really develop a connection with the characters, the author does a magnificent job, with making you curious about a characters backstory, for me I’m really curious on Askkelad’s (I think that’s how you write it) I want to know more of his backstory, something I’m really looking forward for in the next books, Overall really amazing read, highly recommend.
Like 3.5 stars or 7/10 is more accurate. The book quality is subpar, and I can see the end pages separating from the covers, even just sitting on the shelf over time. The story itself is good so far, but I'm not completely enamored by it. Mature topics mentioned but a story meant for teens. It's a common manga that leads to a confusion of who the audience is supposed to be, and this manga is no different.
This was a great read. The deluxe edition definitely helps to appreciate the art of Yukimura-sensei in all of its splendor, and there’s a lot here if you’re a fan of viking stories and norse mythology. Most of the important characters have a lot of depth to them, and while the first three volumes give you enough context to establish the plot, I will definitely be following up to see the story of Thorfinn continue.
This series is so beautiful its insane. I think this may be the best attempt at showing the human condition better than any other story told. Yukimura takes concepts like religion, war, and honor and portrays them in colliding perspectives throughout this first book. A great introduction to Thorphine, Askelad, and Thors. Being a watcher of the show, it was a great revisit to the initial story beats.
3.5 stars. I'll probably go back and update this later after I finish the first arc since this essentially is reviewing the first 1/3 of a book at the moment. As far as beginnings go it's...fine. Classic revenge story with the backdrop of medieval warfare. Nothing so far is especially gripping or really stands out, but its a solid enough set up so I'll see where it goes from here.
This is another series where the show is one of my all time favorites, so I was excited to check out the original version. Overall the show story is very accurate to the story here. Some parts are rearranged (most notably the beginning) but I think those changes work well for the book version in structure. Thorfinn is probably one of my all time favorite characters with an incredible story and arc. The radical and powerful change he goes through is amazing. I can’t wait to continue on book 2!
I haven’t enjoyed reading manga this much since Berserk. It’s so good and I am fully invested in the characters. The books themselves are absolutely beautiful and look amazing in the shelf. Only sad part is the damage buying them all is doing to my bank account 🥹
With these new deluxe editions I am rereading the series from the start and it’s just so amazing how much world building and character development was being set up for the beginning. I have a deeper appreciation for the series as a whole!
Art is great and the story too. I loved the last kingdom and this gives me those vibes and I can’t wait to read more. The only problem is how massive it is!! Where am I going to put this on my shelf!!!
Interesting stories and excellent art. Despite the immense size (and cost) of the book, there isn't much to it. It's a short read and it turns out it's part 1 of 8. So.... I almost shaved off a star for that, but, nah.
