When Miri steals a demon artifact for a client, she doesn't expect a magic curse. Failure to reverse it means the death of someone close to her, the end of her uneasy alliance with the head vampire, and open season on her family. So that sucks.
Meanwhile, her screw-up on a dangerous fact-finding mission may have kicked her sexual tension with the wolf shifter in the balls. At least she’s not obsessing over it, since fighting through a maze of mind games, tested loyalties, and secrets is consuming all her energy.
So, glass half-full.
Now armed with her trusty to-do list, she’s determined to multitask her way to victory like a magic badass.
Yaas, Queen.
A Shade Too Far features a sassy, slow burn romance, a roller coaster ride of a mystery, and a magical midlife adventure.
Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction books, and never looked back.
She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.
Trying to keep this short and sweet so here goes. Second book in series and is not a standalone. Still more interested in overarching storyline regarding the mystery of her parents’ death and the individual characters. There’s more on the relationship front but it’s also kind of messy due to certain events that I don’t want to spoil. Basically there’s more but it’s not a focal point. If you’re into paranormal without the romance, you may enjoy it.
OMG I am loving this over forty’s series and this latest addition only enhances it even more! Poor Miri, there’s so much going on as she carries on trying to get control of her powers. It’s a fast paced, kick ass, action packed read that once you pick it up you will not be able to escape. It’s exciting, highly entertaining, fun, gripping and full of mystery and suspense . If you haven’t started this series then why the hell not??
I love this new series by Ms. Wilde, part of the new PWF group, as I am over 40 and it is so nice to see women my age doing their "thing", even with the unexpected side-effects from menopause. In "A Shade Too Far", Miri, accompanied by our favorite, hilarious, golem, Emmett, is tasked with stealing the "Torquemada Gloves" for our not-so-favorite vampire, Zev BatKian. As always, Miri has mental angst about doing anything for Zev, but it isn't as if she can refuse.....These "gloves" are an ancient demon relic that no one seems to know exactly what they are, what they do, or how they do whatever it is that the do. Whew! The creepiest thing about the "gloves" is why I keep putting the "" around the word. They are actually the de-gloved-all-in-one-piece flayed skin of allegedly Torquemada's hands. NICE! Unfortunately, when aquiring these "gloves", Miri comes across aad supernatural versary no one remembers ever existing - a woman who wants the gloves for herself, and who wields an amazingly strong dybbuk that Miri can't seem to destroy, and that seems to not destroy its owner, as usually happens with dybbuks. Add in a curse this new foe, who wants the gloves for herself, placed on Tatiana giving Miri and her crew only 3 days to figure out what is going on, before the curse kills her new boss. Oh! Did I also happen to mention that Miri's daughter accidentally finding out about Miri's superpowers, causing a rift between the two of them. Whew! Have I covered all of the tangled webs woven by Wilde? I'm not sure, but I am sure that she has expertly woven a story holding more plot twists than I can keep up with, and brings them together at the end with a crazy finish that is spectacular! We also, FINALLY, get some much needed "bow-chicka-wow-wow" time with Miri and the sexy werewolf Laurent. FINALLY! And it is goooooddddd!
Cursed gloves, family drama, a very uncomfortable quiz, and worry about the wolf
Miri's life is getting very difficult. Her job with Tatiana is putting her in real danger. Her non-magical ex-husband is still trying to tell Miri that he knows better than her where the supernatural world and magical powers are concerned. Her daughter finds out about Miri's powers accidently and is understandably shaken. Everything seems to be going wrong around her and she seems to be on everyone's shit list. Even her working partnership with Laurent is rocky. Emmett is a shining light in all this, backing up Miri and making me laugh. There is a lot for Miri to contend with in this book. Her family has to come to terms with her powers and Tatiana desperately needs her help. Zev stole my heart a bit more this time, dropping his guard a little with Miri. Laurent breaks my heart every time, so determined to do everything alone, and save everyone regardless of what it might do to him. The attraction between Miri and Laurent takes a back seat until the end of the book and then it suddenly heats up, thank goodness. Seeing Laurent actually smile made my day. That poor boy deserves a bit of love and laughter and happiness in his life.
I did enjoy the third instalment of the Magic After Midlife books, although the relationship between Miriam and Laurent felt like the weakest aspect of this book, and trod dangerously close to the 'main conflict that could have been resolved with an honest 5-minute conversation between adults' trope that always irritates me when I come across it.
I also felt like the best-friends relationship with Judy, which was a big part of what I enjoyed about the first two books, was a little MIA in this instalment. So I kind of missed that.
That said, there were elements I really did enjoy. Finding out where Naveen's bigotry came from and seeing him overcome it, and watching Miri's friendship with Daya (and her working relationship with Tatiana) blossom was a lot of fun. Also - without giving any spoilers - seeing Eli's new relationship, and the interactions between Miri and Sadie were solid pluses.
On the non-relationship front, the general plot - Miri gets hire to retrieve a demon-cursed object, and in doing so sets a whole world of consequences in motion - was entertaining, and I really enjoyed how that resolved once we find out the real history of the object.
Overall, it felt like a solid 4-star read, and I'm looking forward to starting the next one sometime soon.
Miriam’s life reclaiming her magic as Banim Shovavim is getting more and more complicated. Not because her magic is that (which it is), but because with each passing day she learns more, questions more, and now that her family is in the know, there’s this whole other facet of keeping them safe and in the loop of her life to contend with.
Booby trapped mansion, cursed gloves, and unkillable dybbuk are all it takes to kick this story into gear. It’s moderately fast paced, you need to keep track of quite a few details as the story progresses, but otherwise just enjoy the read. It’s worth it.
I think what I enjoyed most about this one is how deep with every progress of the story, we dive into the character’s past. This time with Zev – which is super cool. Not to mention all the things discovered about Laurent. Oh my…
At this point of the overall story, considering how it ended, I’m dying to know how things continue going forward between Laurent and Miriam. Also… Eli’s love life just got a whole lot more interesting.
You need to read the first 2 books in the series in order to read this one.
Okay, we know I'm a massive fan of Deborah's books and are we really surprised that I loved this read? :D Miri is giving Nava tons of competition for being my fav character to come from Deborah.
In this read our gal Miri, is out on a job that needs some careful planning - and lists - to you know get the only person who can help her with a ward to ward up her place. Needless to say, things don't quite follow the plan...and it starts all sorts of things off.
That Miri is working so hard to shed her people pleasing self that meant she hid more of herself than what hiding her magic did, just hits me in the feels so hard. That with the way she needs to deal with the important folks in her life just not listening...yip, that one hit home too. This read is not just about her sorting out things related to her job, but also about the ways she negotiates just everything about finding her way back to herself and something new - and that has been my favourite parts of this read. Well that and also some *fans self* moments with a certain wolf.
This installment lacked the same oomph as the first two for me, and featured some things that made me truly uncomfortable.
First- Miri goes super inconsistent about her “protect my family at all costs” attitude pretty much right off the bat. She’s already committed to stealing, breaking and entering, procurement of a dangerous artifact for the boss vampire… but leaving the scene while an evil egomaniac is being attacked is out of the question? I just don’t get why she became so invested in saving eVeRyoNe all of a sudden. In book 2 it was kinda plausible bc she had the threat of the KH over her head which was informing her moral choices, but why the deviation now? I enjoyed her ability to accept moral greys and make hard choices for her kids sake.
Second…. Laurent is an abuser. We’ve seen him escalate from inappropriate violent outbursts at the environment (punching walls and shit), to now directing that violence *at Miri*. And she still fucks him. I don’t give a fuck if he’s a shifter, the most passionate French Moroccan alive, and traumatized, a man that throws a giant glass bust at my head is getting NOWHERE near my goodies. Fuck that.

Well, where to start with what I love about this book because I love eeeverything about it! There’s a lot happening in Miri’s life, both working and personal, with the two inevitably intertwined. I adore Miri, who handles everything that’s thrown at her - even the wtf moments - with sass and strength, but even when she’s vulnerable and hurting, she pulls up her big girl pants, gets on with stuff and finds a way. I’m not normally a laugh out loud when reading person, you might get a smile or an internal ‘ha’, but I did laugh aloud with this book, so many funny moments, lines and references. Emmet grew on me a lot, as did Tatiana and Zev - and as for sexy shifter Laurent, I’ll just say I’d like him on me, growing or otherwise 😁 love the slow burn romance build up between him and Mitzi, so deliciously done 🥰 🥵 wonderful writing, yet again by Deborah Wilde. I’m loving this series so much! I don’t want it to end, but when it does I’ll be rereading it for sure.
Lots of stuff happens in this book.. Miri and Laurent finally have a moment which promises to lead to more.. Tatiana has become friendly with Emmett… he will live with her in the future. Zev puts a ward on her house and agrees to protect Miri’s fail and their friends.. Miri and Laurent find out about their past while taking a test to get the name of the woman controlling a spirit… it turns out she has had this familiar since she was born… Cursed gloves come into Zev’s possession and Tatiana is cursed but the curse was lifted by Miri’s actions and the fact that Nareen and Laurent had stolen the gloves from Zev, but Miri gave them back because she had seen how reverently he had received them.. He had been searching for them for 600 years since his wife was killed.. The woman is saved after the spirit is dispatched by Miri and the curse on Tatiana is lifted. My library only has 3 books in their ebook library..

I liked this book but I struggled to love this book. I hate that everyone in her life is being so ridiculously mean to her. I still dislike Naveen's character a lot because he is extremely xenophobic but that has spinoff written all over it with the demon agency if ever anything did and lets face it, I might read it. I really liked the history aspect of it, I liked how it tied into Zev and the overall story. I liked the character growths and arcs of some of the supporting characters, I just didnt like the leads too much in this book. They had great chemistry and yet they got together and it was awkward and that was not even what i disliked. I had hoped they would have better communication, ghosting and icing people was out was not the best move. Here is hoping the next book is better.
This book held my attention til the last page which is not often. The likeable characters with a great plot and a peppering of intelligent humor is an awesome combination. I like that the series has humor that balances some of the darker elements for the books that don't seem too heavy. I'm not a fan of the strong language that Miri uses around her daughter. Miri doesn't mind that her 16 year old daughter uses this same language. I have a 16 year old daughter and cringe at the thought of encouraging this. It's not that I think it's wrong but it seems disrespectful to others and weak that other less offensive words couldn't be used. If a child or teenagers was not present, I would not find it so annoying.
This book was sooooooo funny. I love the snarky comments. The way Meri gets along with most everyone, well some of them. I have a daughter who is one of my favorite people some of the time. Now my oldest granddaughter is like her Mom, but Amber ( the GD) and I have a great relationship. BTW she's 16. Funny right? So when I'm reading about Meri and Sadie's relationship is like mine with Amber. Although she's really noticing the boys. They come before Moody. Moody is me. My oldest grandson named me that when he was about 14 or 15 months old. He's now 21 and I'm still Moody. I love it. My grand kids are so very important to me. Anyway, I digress. Love the book can't wait to start the next one.
It all went pear-shaped right when Miri completed the job Tatiana assigned for her to retrieve a pair of gloves for Zev. By retrieving we mean steal and also witness the craziest dybbuk possession / kill ever. Now she has to work with Nav, her house is divided over what Miri can do, and no one freaking trusts her to know what to do. And what if she really doesn't?
Here's what I didn't like: I felt Miri was a little too confident about her own abilities. Formatting.
Here's what I liked: while Miri was too confident over her abilities, she also recognized it—albeit possibly far too late most of the time. Sadie's outfits are amazing. I like the characters in this series and the world building.
Overall, this was another fun read and i'm enjoying the series. Reading the next one.
Still learning her magic and butting heads with lots of people and then whining about people not being nicer to her, Miriam keeps grabbing her courage and doing her job. I must feel sympathy for a 42-year-old woman who reclaims her magic after three decades of hiding it and any relationship to the magic world. Constantly having to learn the hard way rather than being taught from childhood how to live in the magic world, it just about kills Miriam a good number of times. I struggle a bit with the chaos surrounding Miriam and her internal dialogue which is way more than enough sometimes (I am learning to skim over it) while simultaneously getting a kick out of the plot and characters. Not sure if I will continue with the series.
Miri is back and she feels so familiar it’s not funny. Plans fall apart, everything feels like it’s against you, your new best friend isn’t talking to you because his life is falling apart also. Having to work with people who have a prejudice against you, trying to keep loved ones alive while finding out deep dark secrets about other ones. Then everything slowly comes back together and the world is right again- for a few more days. No, not quite right, it’s better because the sparks fly between Miri and her Frenchman! I am adoring this series of a woman in her forties being fabulous and feisty, while trying to learn the magic world.
Another great addition to this series. Miriam, a Banim Shovavim, has teamed up with the golem Emmett to secure an important artifact for the head vampire, Zev Batkian. Unfortunately, she does not realize just how important it is until she runs into Naveen Kumar, who hates her kind, and her boss, Tatiana, gets cursed. Now on a quest to save her boss she inadvertently puts her family in danger and may have ended a budding relationship with the hot shifter wolf, Laurent. This amazing book was full of action, danger, adventure, mystery, and suspense with a side of yummy to keep anyone thoroughly entertained. So far this has been a phenomenal series and I look forward to the next installment.
This is yet another action packed instalment in the Magic after Midlife series. Whilst the heroine might be a real woman (not the stereotypical heroine, she is over forty, with plenty of real life experience), this is a fantastical world full of magic, vampires, demons and Miri needs to navigate rhe world of magic and keep the peace with her non-magic family.
The story is full of intrigue and magical mayhem, and plenty of laughs and even the potential of a little romance. A great read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Miri has more than enough snark to go around, and she is not afraid to use it. Emmett and Miri are working together on a job, which turns out differently to what they were expecting. She will have lots of hard decisions to make, we can only hope she makes the right ones. I loved all the secrets coming out, and the danger and suspense of her story just drew me in. I love the tension between Miri and Laurent. I am looking forward to reading about her next adventure. I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received, and giving my thoughts and opinions on it.
This is a fun series with some danger. It is unusual with an older (40 year old) lady who knows she has magic but has ignored it all her life after witnessing her parents murder, but started using it in book one as she had to and is learning how to use it. The series continues with a storyline which finishes with each book, but with a couple of ongoing stories. The characters are great and keep getting more interesting as the series goes on. I listened to this one on audible and enjoyed the narration.
In this book, Miri is struggling with her family finding out about magic, keeping them safe, keeping her new family safe as well. There is a lot of humor, a lot of suspense and action. It's alot of edge of your seat waiting to see what happens until the very end. There are some deeper revelations about Laurant and Miri finally dealing with her issues as well. The characters are becoming more relatable and you really get to know Eli and Sadie in this book as well. I loved this book and can't wait for the next one.
Miri is once again playing catch up in many ways, but she is also very good a digging up good facts. This was an amazing page turner and another favorite PWF book for me. Finally, action for Miri and Laurent, fan myself. Great conclusion and looking forward to more! I HIGHLY Recommend!!! I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this TOTALLY HONEST REVIEW because I choose to and LOVED this Book!!!!
To quote Little Simz, Miri sometimes feels a little ‘misguided, misunderstood, misjudged’ while doing her best to keep her sapien family safe from demons, and alongside Laurent - mmm Laurent - rushes against time to save her boss from a deadly threat that followed them after an island heist. Miri doesn’t do things by halves, and for that we say, thank you, Deborah. Thank you very, very mu-uh-uh-uh-uch!
Miriam is tasked with retrieving gloves for Zev, the head of the vampires while continuing her work for Tatiana. But while escaping she realizes many others are also after the gloves. But along the way her boss is cursed Miriam and Laurent most find a relic to save Tatiana so no harm comes toher. It, If"* a great book and I can't wait for the next ciik.
I love this series! Miri makes me laugh out loud and commiserate all at the same time. Especially with what she is going through, shall I say physically without giving anything away!
And I just absolutely love everything about her relationship with Laurent, even the frustration that goes with it!
I am looking forward to book 4, I highly recommend this series to my friends!
My enjoyment of this series was somewhat lessened with this book. I think it was because there was a lot of time devoted to emotional conflict within Miriam's family, and I find an excess of emotional drama to be pointless...it really adds nothing to my enjoyment of a story. Otherwise, the magic system is interesting. The villain is not totally a villain. The good guys are complex. I hope the next book is more humorous and action and less drama.
This is the 3rd book and first time I've read by Deborah Wilde. The books are terrific, a page turner and several well written funny lines and stories. I'm in love with the cast of characters and looking forward to finishing the next 3 book in the series. The only downside will be when there are no more books with these characters. Brilliant, well done, Deborah Wilde is a great story teller. I highly recommend you read this series.
Book #1 and #2 were really good, but book #3 was great! It has been a long time since a book made me laugh out loud!! I LOVED the real-life strauma (trauma + Stress) of Miri! Although all of the characters in the book are great--the author did some fantastic character building/growing, I have to mention Emmett. Emmett is hilarious--but even more amazing is that the author made us "see" him as a person who wanted a purpose and to be needed!
So much of this book rode on civility after confrontation - being able to accept responsibility for your own actions and own your mistakes.
Miriam is learning to “kick butt, and take names,” as a form of self care, not letting anyone marginalize her views or her stance. It’s interesting watching the men in her life adjust.
The vibe of the stories is getting stronger, and I am enjoying it.
My oh my, this series is absolutely amazing. I love observing Miriam bumbling along as best she can, trying to keep things in order. Trying to be a responsible mother and ex wife, while keeping up as a magical fixer and friend is not easy, and there is never a dull moment in this series. Perimenopausal women rock.
