The Lakewood Legacy: Encrypted Secrets, the latest thriller written by E. Denise Billups, hits stores next week, and I was lucky enough to snag an early copy. The author has entertained me with at least ten novels or short stories in the last five years, and this is no exception. Set mostly in the present time in New York, a young woman's life is upended when her husband is tragically killed. Soon after his death, she discovers connections to their former life at prep school where a student disappeared. As Elaine remembers the details of long ago, familiar faces re-enter her life, forcing her to decide whom she can and cannot trust. Ripe with bold psychological tension and cryptic suspense, the story leaves readers guessing whether once someone crosses into another world, can they still send messages to those left behind.

I've always admired Billups' ability to take a reader right up to the moment where they question if something is real or imaginary. An image of a ghost appearing at just the right (wrong?) moment. An eerie feeling of danger lurking around the corner followed by a last-minute change of mind with no explanation. A repetition of scenes with a vastly different outcome; which one really happened? On top of that, the history at prep school between Elaine and her roommate was quintessential teenage drama and bullying. This time, things turned out far worse than they often do, and at the same time, far more relief when Elaine finds a way to survive. Billups knows how to balance her characters so you feel what they feel but also wonder if you'd do the same thing in that situation.

A fantastic read... easy to devour in a lazy Sunday afternoon, or even for a few hours over a couple of days. Put yourself in each scene and live it as it's written. That's how you know it's a great book.

This story was a little too neat and tidy for me to mark it as an amazing psychological thriller. The writing at times was a bit choppy. I felt as though the main character, Elaine, spent a lot of time whining which ended up making her a pretty annoying narrator, but it happens. She’s not an all together terrible character, she just needs some refinement in my opinion.

The plot masterfully weaves together past trauma at Lakewood Prep with present-day threats, creating a gripping narrative filled with suspense and high stakes. Elaine's journey from mourning widow to determined code breaker is both compelling and harrowing, as she battles a psychopathic neighbor, corporate assassins, and the weight of her husband's enigmatic legacy.

This book is exactly why any time Billups releases a new book, I drop whatever I’m reading to read it. She is a masterful writer. Her ability to weave emotion and create connections between reader and character is why I love her books.
This book had all the elements of her writing I’ve grown to love. The characters are well developed. The MC is relatable and tenacious. And the plot! Wow! It keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really liked the flashbacks in time, which make the reader feel like they are discovering the information in real time with the MC. It puts you directly in the world. Also Billups has an amazing ability to bring the eerie and spooky into a story in such a way that it could be real life. I finished the book late at night and I’ll tell you when I got up to get a drink of water, every creak and house sound had me on edge (that is a sign of a good book!)
I could go on and on, but I highly recommend this book to ALL readers of every genre because you won’t want to miss this experience. She is definitely one of my most favorite authors so if you haven’t read any of her other books, start with Tainted Harvest and she’ll be one of your favorites too!

This book is an absolute page-turner that grabs you from the very first page, thrusting you into a captivating situation that makes it impossible to put down. The narrative is immersive, drawing you deeply into the lives of the characters—especially Elaine—with whom you quickly feel a strong connection. The storytelling skillfully alternates between past and present, weaving together moments and details that keep the suspense high until the very end.

One of the book’s strengths is its short, digestible chapters, making it easy to dive into a few at a time, even on a busy day. The ending is both intense and emotional, delivering a powerful conclusion that leaves a lasting impact.

I highly recommend this book—it’s engaging, suspenseful, and deeply resonant, offering a memorable journey with characters you genuinely connect with.

High School sweethearts, Elaine and Brian, have stood by each other and their secret for years. The successful couple are happy and ready to make a deal, selling their high-tech invention. But tragedy strikes and Elaine goes on a mission to uncover the truth and learns that the secrets that haunt her from the past are linked to her husband’s death.

This psychological thriller kept me in its grip until the very end. The story had some great twists with palpable tension that made it hard to put down. It’s well written, with characters you can’t help but root for.

This is the first book I’ve read of E. Denise Billups, but it won’t be the last. If you love psychological thrillers, be sure to pick this one up.

Story flashes back and forth on a historic murder, and is intertwined with one of the present day characters also getting murdered.
The main character Elaine, is likeable but we get to hear a wee too much from her on her emotional rollercoaster,
Lots of descriptions of the past story, makes the read eerie, and page turning worthy.
The characters from the past and present are plausible, but it just was a little bit too tidy how they ended up in present day of Elaine’s story!
I enjoyed the story, a couple of parts, as mentioned, reading about Elaine’s fears, kind of kept repeating itself.

In this thriller, Elaine’s husband was killed. She finds similarities to a student who went missing while they were in prep school. The story flashes back to that time and a time when she had been bullied. Elaine’s past traumas have to work themselves out now, with the help of her therapist. Elaine has to figure out what is happening before she is the next to disappear. It is a great psychological thriller. I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.

Suspenseful read and definitely a page turner. I was hesitant when it described paranormal. It only touched on it a few times. I'd definitely recommend this book to someone. Great mystery and storyline.

This book had a slow start for me. It seemed like the author would go in circles initially going over the same details more than once. However, once I got about half way through the book, it really picked up and I couldn’t put it down! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Lakewood Legacy by E. Denise Billups is a small-town mystery that blends family secrets, past trauma, and modern technology in an ambitious attempt to unravel a decades-old tragedy.
The novel opens with a striking hook, particularly a line that immediately establishes emotional stakes and moral tension, and the premise itself is intriguing. The story explores how the past continues to ripple through the present, and there are moments where the atmosphere of a tight-knit town with long memories is effectively conveyed (the line “small towns have big ears” stands out).
That said, I found the execution uneven. The writing often feels overly melodramatic and over-explained, with dialogue that frequently spells out emotions or themes rather than allowing them to emerge naturally. There is also noticeable repetition in phrasing and some awkward sentence constructions that pulled me out of the story. While these are not fatal flaws, they accumulate over time and affect the overall pacing.
Character clarity is another challenge. Several characters have very similar names, which caused confusion early on and made it difficult to stay grounded in certain scenes. More broadly, there are moments where character motivations and reactions feel implausible or overly convenient, particularly when it comes to the revelation of long-held secrets. Tension often resolves too easily, undercutting the suspense the story is trying to build.
From a realism standpoint, aspects of the investigation, institutional responses, and technological or procedural details strained credibility, especially given the historical timeframe in which much of the backstory is set. These issues may not bother all readers, but for me they were distracting and made it harder to fully suspend disbelief.
While the novel has an interesting concept and flashes of strong atmosphere, I ultimately struggled to stay engaged and found myself skimming much of the final act.

E. Denise Billups writes a mesmerizing thriller with The Lakewood Legacy: Encrypted Secrets

In The Lakewood Legacy: Encrypted Secrets, the reader is brought into the lives of Brian and Elaine Scott, however, Brian's been killed. Brian was a genius, and worked in the technology field, which may have put him in the crosshairs of someone sinister. I am a big fan of E. Denise Billups and want to read whatever this author writes. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. The story has themes of suspense, intrigue, and a wife, grieving for her husband. Insert a psycho neighbor, and the corporation's hunters on the prowl, for what Brian may have left behind. Your heart beats fast, and the thrill of wondering about what happens next, and the total unpredictability of the story, make you turn each page slowly and savor every word, as to not miss anything. This story is a definite attention grabber, so much I couldn't put it down. A reader can get lost in the story. Every word, every scene means something to the story, and the reader is hoping Elaine survives, considering her quest to solve her husband's last puzzle, and last breath. The past has haunted Brian, a past with deep corporate secrets, and now, he's the one who can look out for his wife, and hope she can decrypt his puzzles. This book deserves 5 plus stars! The Lakewood Legacy: Encrypted Secrets is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.

At age twelve, Elaine goes to live with her grandparents in their lakeside home after a family violence turns into tragedy, and the boys next door become life long friends, especially Brian, her sweetheart, the man she eventually marries.

At college, Elaine suffers a nemesis in the form of her roommate Amber, a seethingly jealous girl who attacks her in the boathouse on Lake Placid one fateful night. But it is Amber who loses the fight.

Ten years later, just when success is poised to bless Elaine and Brian thanks to their AI inventions, he's shot in the street and dies in her arms.

Who killed Brian? And what is it with the horrible girl in the flat upstairs and her incessant nocturnal stomping about?

As Elaine attempts to uncover the truth about Brian's death, she wrestles with her own inner turmoil and pent up rage and fear. Her world soon grows claustrophobic as past and present collide. It's a carefully plotted tale, and I didn't predict the twists towards the end.

Intense, emotionally charged and gripping, The Lakewood Legacy: Encrypted Secrets is a thriller that is at once a meditation on the intergenerational nature of rage, violence and malevolence, and the psychological and physical damage they cause.

Evocative, clever and never misses a beat, I found this novel hard to put down.

The Lakewood legacy. Encrypted Secrets.

I’ve read several of this author’s novels. She has the talent to draw you into her storylines and not let you go. “The Lakewood Legacy” is no exception. The characters are so well depicted, especially Elaine the main character, with whom you will easily associate, fear for, and keep reading to hope she will survive.
Elaine thinks she has it all, the perfect husband, an amazing home, and an innovative invention for which she and her husband are about to signing a lucrative contract. But then, her life falls apart. Her husband is killed, and she’s thrown into a world of dark secrets and shady deals. The more she investigates, the more she puts herself in danger.
Everything seems linked with events from their schooldays that Elaine would rather forget. And as she peels back the layers of her past, the plot becomes more convoluted than she would have ever thought possible. People will say and do anything to protect themselves. Deceit, deception and lies abound until Elaine can trust no one.
This is a well written, well thought out and executed novel where even the slightest almost nondescript action will have a reason behind it.
A solid five stars from me.

The Lakewood Legacy: Encrypted Secrets by E. Denise Billups is an emotional thrill-ride wrapped in a mystery.

Elaine is someone who traverses the world around her with scrutiny and caution. There are many reasons that reveal why, and how she got here. When the biggest challenge of her life arrives, she faces it alone, without Brian for a heartbreaking reason. Don’t get me started on the neighbor...

The past is never truly gone is it?

Technology via ELLIE plays a wonderful role in evaluating emotion and weighing in on truth, lies and heavy on the second. What length are some people willing to go to keep the mask on? Ah!

The twist in this story as Elaine navigates grief is the paranormal which I absolutely loved.

Details of nature, architecture and nostalgia pepper the novel with a feeling of depth, brevity and tactile memory.

I have read everything this author has published and appreciate a contemporary suspense novel that is willing to explore human emotions and what starting over looks like for a strong woman with a heart and a brain.

This is a solid story where the main character, Elaine, sets out to unravel events from a decade earlier at school, after her husband is shot on their way home. There are ties to a contract to sell the company's apps. Add in a rather disturbing neighbour in more ways than one, and you have the ingredients of a tense thriller.

I felt this just fell a bit short for me. I enjoyed it but it took a long while for things to take off for me. I did enjoy the backwards look at the old events and it made the current day events more clearer despite not knowing what was true or not. The not knowing who to believe was the best aspect and the reveal at the end regarding Elaine's childhood was a great surprise.

This was another great read by a favorite author.
A mix of psychological thriller, suspense, psychic, and ghosts, this was a story hard to put down.
From the get go, we meet Elaine and can’t help but feel for her – sympathy for her early childhood and the bullying she endured, as well as losing her husband in a shooting accident … or was it?
The flashbacks give readers an insight about Elaine’s past while building up the suspense and making the reader wonder if they figured out the plot. Then something else is revealed and we realize that we’d assumed wrong!
And I hadn’t even considered that twist at the end – amazing!

As with all other of Billups’ books, this one is well written, engaging, and relatable. The theme is a bit dark, perfect for the season!

Highly recommended! ♥

“Lakewood Legacy,” by E. Denise Billups, is a captivating paranormal thriller that grips the reader from the first startling scene! It begins with a confrontation between high school senior Elaine and the mean girl who has been bullying her. But this time is more sinister than past encounters; Elaine’s tormentor assaults her, and the pair engage in a deadly scuffle. From there, the story splits time between the past and the present, when threats, old and new, combine to terrorize Elaine and expose her to danger. This is a heart-stopping thriller that I highly recommend!

Haunting. Thrilling. Terrifying. Heartbreaking. This story takes you through each of those multiple times. Even when everything is over, there are more surprises. Truths uncovered by Elaine’s visits with her therapist. Truths that were buried so deep they never would have seen the light of day if she had not sought help. I am happy that she is healing, both physically as well as mentally. I am happy that she has someone to help her. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Elaine's life explodes with the sudden death of her husband which is then compounded by the effects of a previous death in the past. She has to navigate a treacherous path in the present while dealing with trauma from her past all while trying to find out the truth before it's too late for her. This is an instense, psycological thriller with plenty of suspense to keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
