"We are yours no longer, witch. We are Shade’s children now.”
Angelica Brighton stands alone against the Father of Nightmares’ malevolent reach. While her family and friends recover from the brutal fight at Carmichael Farms, the young Guardian delves into Shade’s own realm in a precarious gamble to end the Demonkin threat once and for all. Although prepared to confront her cousin, Aiden, at his dark master’s side she must first face the embittered souls of the Firstborn, compelled by decades of torment to obey the demon’s will.
Anne-Marie Carmichael remains a fugitive hounded by the accusation of witchcraft. While old friends and new allies rally against Preston Mathers’ mercenary army that strengthens and emboldens Shade’s efforts, the fearless and determined colonial farmwife must once more venture into the heart of her enemy’s stronghold to break the demon’s influence over the home and community she loves.
Within the unholy depths beneath Alistair’s Climb, Angelica and Anne-Marie rush towards their ultimate confrontation against Shade and his legion of thralls. Armed with lightning and fire, the Witches of Pioneer Vale will risk everything to fulfill the duty so long ago laid upon the shoulders of the Guardian’s. More binding than a promise. More solemn than a vow.
Covenant - the thrilling conclusion to the award winning Witches of Pioneer Vale Trilogy
I thoroughly enjoyed this final instalment of The Witches of Pioneer Vale series. I'm amazed at how much the author managed to pack into this book and it flowed so well. The high tempo really kept me going and I totally couldn't put it down.
Considering I read the first book in the series several years ago, I'm amazed at how well I remembered the characters when I picked things back up earlier in the year. I absolutely adore this series. The characters are so real and their battle against evil totally captivated my attention. I also love the dual timeline. While Angelica's trajectory is classic YA urban fantasy, the historical and more mature inflections with Anne-Marie's story added so much to the experience and definitely contribute to making this series stand out.
Additionally, while I usually don't enjoy multiple points of view all that much, it really worked so well in this series. I definitely cared for all the side characters who got some page time and found a lot of value in seeing the added perspectives because the two "witches" weren't always around when important things were happening. The villains were suitably hateful and I was satisfied with their outcomes too, even while Combs managed to surprise me with several unexpected twists.
Whether you enjoy fast-paced, action-packed stories or characters with depth and lots of difficult decisions to make, if you enjoy contemporary fantasy or more historical perspectives, I can highly recommend this series. It blends it all perfectly.
