The Maghazi of Sayyiduna Muhammad SAW: The Earliest Known Biography of the Messenger of Allah SWT By Mūsā ibn 'Uqbah Translated by Javed Iqbal & Jody McIntyre Published by Imam Ghazali Publishing Goodread's Rating: - My Rating: 5/5
“O people! Listen to what I have to say to you, for I do not know; perhaps I will never meet you again after this year in this place." “O people! Your blood and wealth are inviolable for you until you meet your Lord; like the sacredness of this day of yours; like the sacredness of this month of yours; and like the sacredness of this city of yours." “You are going to meet your Lord Who shall then question you regarding your actions – and I have conveyed. Whoever holds something for safekeeping should return it to whoever entrusted it to them."
Musa ibn Uqbah's The Maghazi of Sayyiduna Muhammad SAW stands as a remarkable and historically significant text, offering a thorough exploration of the Prophet Muhammad’s military campaigns. As one of the earliest surviving works in the maghazi/conquest genre, the book holds both religious and historical distinction. Musa ibn Uqbah’s authority as a Tabi'i scholar and a respected muhaddith imbues his narrative with immense credibility, praised for its rigorous attention to the chain of narrators and the accuracy of reports.
The text's significance is further heightened by its history—presumed lost for over 400 years before being rediscovered in the National Library of Tunisia. Though incomplete, with three-quarters of the manuscript having survived, it provides invaluable insights into the life of the Prophet SAW, with particular emphasis on his military endeavors. The concise nature of this text sets it apart from other biographies, especially given its deliberate avoidance of embellishment, common in contemporary works.
Imams such as Malik, al-Shafi’i, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal have praised the meticulousness and authenticity of this work. Its strict adherence to the selection of reliable narrators and its detailed focus on the maghazi render it a foundational resource for understanding not only the battles of the Prophet SAW but also the broader context of his life and mission.
For those seeking a deep dive into both Islamic history and the scholarly discipline of early Islamic texts, The Maghazi of Sayyiduna Muhammad SAW offers a rewarding, albeit challenging, experience. This work presents a rare level of historical integrity within sira literature, merging factual precision with a spiritually rich portrayal of the Prophet’s life. The balance between Musa ibn Uqbah's scholarly rigour and the profound context of the Prophet’s mission invites reflection and deeper understanding of these historical events.
"The word Kawthar is derived from the root word kathrah, which signifies abundance or a multitude. The Kawthar, as such, is unrestricted and unlimited in its goodness and bounties. Put in another way, Allah is informing His beloved Prophet SAW that He has given him that which is plentiful and overflowing. One simply needs to read the Qur’an to see that every verse and chapter is a fountain of goodness. In a parallel fashion, one need only study the sīrah to see this supreme abundance given to the Prophet SAW. The sublime way (Sunnah) of the Prophet SAW is Kawthar. We find the goodness of this Kawthar spread among the billions of believers across history who have clung to his way in the far-flung corners of the Earth. There is Kawthar, supreme abundance, manifest in the goodness that humanity gained from his divine message, which not only reaches those who believe in him, but also those who do not."

Just finished The Maghazi of Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ: The Earliest Known Biography of the Messenger of Allah by Musa ibn ‘Uqbah, translated by Javed Iqbal — and I am genuinely humbled to have had the opportunity to read this work.
The documentation in this book traces back to renowned Hadith compilations and real individuals who lived alongside the Prophet ﷺ in the earliest days of Islam. It exceeded my expectations in every way. Much respect to everyone involved in bringing this treasure into English.
The raw, authentic quality of the accounts recorded here is truly priceless — a profound historical and devotional resource for Muslims seeking to understand the Seerah with depth and sincerity.
First off, many props to the team who translated this incredible source from the early history of Islam into English. May their efforts be rewarded. That said, the publishers decided to package this very interesting historical source as a piece of devotional seerah literature. The result is more than a little confusing and not satisfying to read. As a student of history my interest is piqued, but I wouldn't say that I would recommend this to someone looking to read an early seerah account.
I was very excited for this translation, but it actually exceeded my expectations. Much respect to all involved in bringing this work to light in English. Jazakaa Allahu khayran. I've read several works of Sirah this year, and the raw and authentic quality of what is recorded here is just priceless. A great historical as well as devotional resource for Muslims.
