Until Jude

I love Until You and I think that single POV is perfect for it. It makes the story very intriguing and a bit mysterious. So did I miss having Blake's POV? Not really. Am I happy we still got it? Absolutely.

I loved reliving my favourite scenes and their banter. My top ones will forever be the rooftop and the balcony scene. Though there are so many more. I love Blake even more now and it was wonderful to see Jude through his eyes. Even though the story is the same, the author managed to sneak in a couple surprises. And the epilogue is lovely.

The only thing that I think wasn't necessary was the chapter about Jude's parents, but it can be easily skipped if you remember what happened. And the cover model is not how I see Blake. 😅 Nevertheless, this story is beautifully written and it gave me all the feels all over again.

I love to reread books I adore, so obviously I reread Until You before I started Until Jude. That wasn't the best decision, though.

Reading Until Jude immediately after Until You was like reading the same book twice, just with slightly different comments in between all the same interactions.
It would have been lovely to read not a copy/paste - situation of EVERY interaction between Jude and Blake... and not much more? Some new interactions, and additional (not known) details about Blake would have been great.
This wasn't bad, by no means, it's just that I didn't learn nearly anything new about Blake and Jude, and that's exactly what I had hoped for. Thankfully near the end there were a few new scenes without Jude, so we got a bit more from Blake's side of the story.

I skipped the whole chapter with the retelling of Jude's childhood as it was exactly the same chapter from Until You (Why was it here, though? Everybody has already read that one? I don't think someone is going to start the series with this book rather than Until You?).

Overall this was nothing new, yet it was still endearing. It's better to read this installment not immediately after Until You, though, even if it's labeled as installment nr. 1,5. I'd maybe put it at the end of the series, to relive the Jude/Blake-loveliness, when the memories of all the details have already faded.

Also, this novella is free with the author' newsletter, so I shouldn't really complain, and I'll round up my 3,25 stars to 4 stars because of that ;)

Last thing: what's with the new cover for Until You and this book's cover??? The first cover for Until You had been lovely, and similar to the cover for And Then You... Why change it? I thought we had finally moved on from all the half-naked-bodies with strange facial expressions on mm romance covers, lol.

I genuinely can’t tell if I loved ‘Until Jude’ for itself or if I just loved ‘Until You’ and Blake and Jude so much, that it felt like coming home.
I’m leaning towards the second option though, because we hardly learn anything new, there aren’t really any scenes we don’t already know from ‘Until you’ and I suppose we could all imagine the self inflicted torture and regrets Blake went through with keeping his secret for as long as he did.
That being said though, I still swooned so hard, was fully invested even though I knew exactly how everything would play out, and fell in love with the MCs all over again.
So is this a review for ‘Until Jude’ or ‘Until You’ again? IS there even a real distinction between the two books? I honestly don’t know but I also don’t care, because THE BANTER and BLANKET FORTS and the PIANO and the PASSION and the ‘WILL YOU MAKE AN EXCEPTION FOR ME’ and the SITTING IN FRONT OF THE DOOR. I seriously can’t with these two 😭😭😭

This was simply perfection to me. Until You is a staple reread for me, so to have the same book but with different frames of reference is something I’m going to cherish forever.

If you’re not someone who rereads books, this may not be for you. You’re getting the same book except in Blake’s POV. His thoughts obviously differ from Jude’s and we get a better picture of what went down with all the Sarah drama, but the dialogue and scenes are the same.

The best part for me was Steph. God, I didn’t think anything could make me love that boy more yet here we are. The love and care he has for Jude, and for so many people honestly, and he still tries to act so detached and unaffected. “I’d really prefer it if we never mentioned this conversation. Ever. To anybody.” I adore him with my entire soul.

Briar Prescott is a queen. Writing a whole ass 233-page book and releasing it via free newsletter. I am forever her humble servant.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The first red flag I faced with Until Jude was that the cover model did not capture my version of Blake. True, everyone has their own interpretation of characters, and it's not the first time a model has not matched the character, so fine, I'll relent. 🤷🏻‍♀️

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The second red flag, however, and what pretty much sealed the deal to leave a very unpleasant taste in my mouth for throughout the rest of the read was the Prologue, itself. 🙅🏻‍♀️ I did not like how it was portrayed; regardless of thoughts of said character - I had this impression that the readers are supposed to be forgiving or be sympathetic - or at least, understand where Blake is coming from... 😒

And from then on, my mood soured even further. 🙎🏻‍♀️

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I considered reading Until Now again to refresh my memory; but upon reading it the second time already, I had felt that it wasn't quite a five-star read, so I was worried if I read it again, it would drop even lower. 🙃 Thankfully, I didn't because Until Jude was pretty much the same thing, only well, in Blake's perspective. I liked the bit about how loyalty is his best and worst quality - 'make of that what you will, Jude Riley.' It was the essence of this read, but it still was not enough to make it worth my while.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ All it did was make my heart hurt for Jude all over again - more than before and hate Sarah more than ever. 💔💔

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I did not feel like I learned anything relevant; while it was nice to see his thoughts and emotions at certain scenes, there were only a handful of scenes sans Jude - maybe, 3-4. I know it's not always necessary to include different scenes but don't you think it could have added more substance to his character? 😥 Give him more of a personality or just some character depth. Rather than him being only regretful and remorseful over the guilt he was facing over being unable to confess the truth to Jude, as well as sinking deeper in love with him. 😮‍💨

And another thing!

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Anyone reading this has obviously read the previous book, right? Then, why was it necessary to include Abby's perspective of the past - again? Please explain it to me! That time could have been spent giving us new scenes even between Blake and Jude - that's something that can be done, too, isn't it? Why was there a need to rehash it in its entirety - to refresh the reader's memory? It just made no sense to me - I was so confused - at a loss of words. 😫 I just did not get why we needed to know the full account again - even if it's to portray Sarah as the 'villain' then, doesn't that defeat the purpose of Blake's idea of what loyalty is? *sigh* I was just not happy with this.. 😢

It's like just one minute is enough to hash it out, and then it's forgotten to the wind! Yes, one would argue that we care about the romance, not the backstory - but, then why start with it!!???? 😫

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Perhaps this is my own personal vexation over the deception that is overlooking the finer points of their dynamic. It's also not fair for me to be so critical, since it is just bonus material that the author wrote with the best of intentions; so maybe, I'm just making a big deal out of nothing. 😕 Because yes it was sweet to see the two of them fall for each other again, even when the crippling guilt was weighing on Blake, how something that was 'supposed to be short and easy and quick. A surface-level interaction and nothing more' has developed into something he simply can't imagine living without - not without proving just how far his loyalty does go. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I still adore Blake and Jude 😍

Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still cried my eyes out at Jude finding out, at Blake and his vigil, and at that goddamn beautiful love letter that absolutely guts me every time I read it 😭

I love that we now have Blake's perspective for this relationship, and I love that the epilogue was from Jude's POV - a direct flip from Until You.

Blake and Jude are one of my favourite couples ever and their book has a place on my actual bookshelf - a rare achievement! If you loved Until You and always wanted to see how Blake was feeling, you'll love this.

Wow, I’m certainly in the minority, but I just didn’t love this book. I just had the hardest time getting into it. I loved Until You. It was a five star read for me.

I just didn’t like Blake in this story. If I met him in real life I’d avoid him. And without knowing what Jude was feeling the sitting outside his door was just being a stalker. It would have completely creeped me out.

I gave the book three stars because I usually love anything written by Briar Prescott and I’ve been having kind of a reading slump and figured this would get me out of it.

Jude against me, head to toe. Everywhere and everything is Jude

This was beautiful, to see the other side… the love they share and build , and all those first that belong only to them 🖤 this is one of my favorites ever,but I didn’t get as much satisfaction as the original. How can I explain better, I loved it, but it didn’t add as much as I was hopping 🫤

The groveling one of the best 🤌 when I think of groveling I see Blake on those stairs every single time 🥹
And that letter… please kill me because my heart is weak.

This is Blake's POV. Jude's POV is the book "Until You". Jude and Blake are about 25. Blake knows Jude's birth mother who Jude is estranged from. Blake tracks down Jude for Sarah, Jude's mom and because of his curiosity, he wants to meet Jude and learn a little bit more about him. He conspires to meet Jude at a party one night and strike up a conversation. Jude hits on Blake but gets turned down because Blake is trying to not cross lines. But Blake is attracted and intrigued. He wants to spend more time with Jude even if he thinks it would be crossing the line to start something sexual with him. So he keeps inserting himself into Jude's life and they become friends. Jude is someone who doesn't open up to people easily, he only has a few close friends and he isn't even fully open and trusting with them. But Blake makes Jude open up more than anyone else has. They start basically living in each other's pockets as friends.

A run in with Jude's friend/occasional friend with benefits causes some jealousy and pushes them over the line from friendship into a sexual relationship. Blake doesn't want Jude hooking up with other guys. With sex added to the mix of their already deep friendship, they quickly fall into dating and love. But Blake eventually has to tell Jude that he knows his mom and now that Blake knows why Jude is estranged from his mom, this is going to be difficult and hurt and it's going to be a betrayal. Blake has to win Jude back win shit comes out.

I really like this couple. I loved the original book. And it was nice to revisit them. I don't think this book stands very well on its own as a standalone book. I felt like book one was better, it covered a more complete story, this book missed a couple key events that would have made things make a bit more sense and have a bit more depth to them. Just a random example, this book doesn't explain why Steph was living at Jude's place, just all of a sudden one day the characters were talking about how Jude being back at his place was leaving Steph without a place to stay.

I kind of preferred Jude's perspective to Blake's because I'm weak for a character like Jude who is emotionally distant and protects himself using sarcasm and jokes. I find him really relatable. Jude's POV was a bit more fun for me.

Some notable moments:

"“Okay. I say this with all the friendliness in the world. What the hell is wrong with you? Go the fuck to bed.”
I smile, despite myself.
“That’s the plan. Right after I finish this. I need another hour at the most. And then I’ll go and find something to eat and call it a night.”
“I have a follow-up question now. When was the last time you ate?”
I look around at my desk and the mess on it.
“Based on the amount of granola bar wrappers I’d say I’ve definitely eaten something in the last forty-eight hours.”"

"“This is great stuff,” he says. “I can feel your hotness level dropping by the second, so by the time we get to the living room, I’ll probably have no problem not sleeping with you. Thanks for taking care of that for me.”"

"I march to the hallway closet and grab the spare pillow and blanket. Then I march back and throw that stuff on the couch, and finally I march Jude into the bedroom and push him onto the bed.
I fight the urge to roll him up in the blanket so he can’t move."

So, Until You is perhaps my favourite contemporary MM romance. And yet... I didn't particularly vibe with this. Hear me out.

I actually feel like getting Blake's perspective added nothing to the existing story. There wasn't any internal monolgue-ing in this that couldn't easily be deduced from the original, since Briar Prescott wrote that so well. Even though it was all from Jude's perspective, us a reader could clearly see the attraction and love Blake had for Jude, as well as the internal struggle he had with keeping his big bad secret from him. It wasn't always overt, but the hints were always there, and you especially pick them up on a re-read.

Despite this, I still would've enjoyed Until Jude a lot more if we simply got some extra scenes between Blake and Jude missing from the original. Not even anything substantial that would flesh out the main plot, but just fun treats. Because the banter between Blake and Jude is so great, and their relationship so sweet, I would've been so ridiculously happy with some totally fluffy filler. For example, it is referred to in both versions that before they got together they spend a night playing pool, they attend a ranger's game and they catch up for lunch in the park eating sandwiches... having even one of these cutesy moments on-page would've made my little heart soar.

Instead, we got the original book scene-for-scene, with the exact same dialogue, but with a lot of Blake obsessing over how he can't stay away from Jude. And while this is fine, like I said above, we already knew this.

In fact, the only 'extra' scenes included were 1. the argument Blake has with Sage outside the gallery 2. the conversation Blake has with Sarah in the restaurant before Jude shows up and 3. the scene between Stephen and Blake about fighting for Jude. As for #1 and #2, again, I feel like these conversations could be easily filled in by the reader's imagination. The context here was already pretty obvious.

And as for #3... well I kind of hated it. I previously liked to think that Blake decided to fight for Jude on his own terms, after waiting some time to give him space. In my mind, he was never going to give up that easy, and that felt in line with his characterisation. So making Stephen be the push he needed to do so felt a little 'character assasination-y' to Blake in an attempt to build Stephen's character up. I know fans of this series are all obsessed with Stephen (myself included), but he got his own book, we didn't need him to be the impetus behind Jude/Blake's reconciliation for us to like him in this one? I don't know.

But... this is free content from the author that she is just sending out to her newsletter subscribers from the goodness of her heart. So I feel like I have zero right to complain (and it's also why I am not going to rate this). Thanks Briar Prescott, you are lovely. I love everything you do. Don't mind me over here being a negative Nancy lol.

As if reading the first book (Until You) wasn't enough, this came to totally destroy my heart. Brilliantly painful, brilliant writing, very original story. I adored every second.
I wanted to do this with both books open (Both Jude's and Blake's p.o.v.), and I did for a few pages but I got so absorbed by Blake's p.o.v. so immersed. Eventually, Until Jude holds it's own and tells the story in a new light that I absolutely loved. I really need a printed copy of this book.✨
Exquisite banter. Top notch flirting. Excellent dialogues.

Jakże się ucieszyłam, że połówka jest z POVem Blake'a. Bo pomimo, iż rozumiałam całkowicie, dlaczego we wcześniejszej książce jest tylko POV Jude'a, to jednak fajnie jest poznać historię z jego punktu widzenia, z jego narracją - tak sobie myślałam w każdym razie. Dodatkowo plusem tej połówki jest to, że jest wyjątkowo długa jak na połówkę - też tak sobie myślałam - dłuższa, niż niejedna książka, która robi za "całość" w niejednej serii.

Jednak im dalej czytałam, tym bardziej byłam znudzona, sfrustrowana i wkurzona 🫤

Okazało się, że pomysłem autorki na ten tytuł było powtórzenie wszystkich możliwych scen między naszymi bohaterami, które pojawiły się w tomie poprzedzającym. Dokładnie słowo w słowo, akcja po akcji - nawet sceny seksu. Jedyna zmiana to POV osoby, która opowiada. Nie wiem, jakieś 90% książki, może nawet więcej, to powtórki. Miałam nadzieję na poznanie Blake'a, większe zrozumienie go, dowiedzenie się o nim dużo większej ilości rzeczy, niż pozwalał na to tom z POVem Jude'a.

Tymczasem jedyne, co dostałam, to myśli Blake'a o tym, że robi źle, ale nie może się powstrzymać, bo Jude go przyciąga, jest fascynujący i nie może się mu oprzeć. Że wszystko mu wyjaśni, ale zrobi to w stylu Scarlett O'Hara - jutro. Na palcach jednej ręki można policzyć sceny, których nie było w tomie 1, ale nawet one niespecjalnie coś wnoszą. A już przegięciem naprawdę było powtórzenie rozdziału, z POVem mamy Jude'a, który opowiada o tym, jak Jude do nich trafił. Kropka w kropkę 🫤

Nawet epilog jest taki sam - ta sama scena, tylko tym razem z punktu widzenia Jude'a (bo wcześniej to był jedyny POV Blake'a w książce).

Nie wiem, może innym osobom ta książka sprawiła radochę, ale jak się czyta jeden tom po drugim i to dosłownie - tak jak ja, to opisanie jej jako rozczarowanie to niedopowiedzenie roku. Frustracja i wkurzenie te�� są bardzo delikatnymi określeniami. Przecież ja to właśnie dopiero co skończyłam czytać!!!

Historia zupełnie i totalnie niepotrzebna, nie wnosząca absolutnie nic nowego, po prostu bez sensu - dla mnie strata czasu.

Daję dwie gwiazdki TYLKO i WYŁACZNIE ze względu na Jude'a, bo on ciągle jest cudowny i zasługuje na wszystkie szczęśliwe zakończenia tego świata 🤗

Aaaaa... i jeszcze na koniec - znowu okładka. Wiadomo, każdy ma w głowie, jak bohater powinien wyglądać i czy to, co jest na okładce, odpowiada jego wyobrażeniom, czy nie, to indywidualna sprawa. W moim przypadku znowu totalnie nietrafione wyobrażenie - dla mnie to nie jest Blake, tylko facet, który jedyne, co ma z nim wspólnego, to kolor włosów...

When is a sequel ever better than the first???

Right here! 😍

It's always interesting reading a book from the other main character's pov, when you already know the outcome. Particularly this time as I was still spitting angry at what Blake did in Until You. But this version MADE me want to forgive Blake. And you know what? I did. How's that for good writing? 😍

It felt warm and familiar revisiting Jude and Blake's story and filled in a few pieces of the puzzle with a BHS view of events. And from this pov we got to see Blake jealous! Which just made me zing inside - because of course he had no right to. But did I still love it? YES! The initial tension between Blake and Stephen was gold!

Somehow I loved the humorous banter even more in this book than the first. I'm not sure why, as it's basically the same story.

To hear Blake fighting himself not to fall for Jude was just smooshy goodness. ❤️

And reliving the hiding the shoes episode was all kinds of fun. 😍

The only thing that didn't track is Sarah. To write her in a polar opposite way, with no journey to follow as to why or how she had changed so radically, made me feel as though I wasn't even reading the same character.

But that's a minor issue when compared to the rest of Prescott's writing.

I’m honestly speechless because this book is sooo good!! I’m including Until You in “this book” because the whole story is just amazing and I kinda forgot how incredible it was.

Getting only Jude’s POV in Until You made total sense at the time and it wouldn’t have worked with Blake's perspective. But now, I’m so glad that we finally got to have it!! My whole view of Jude is very different through his eyes. I remember Jude as being grumpy with a dark sense of humor, yeah being in his head wasn’t always joyful. But Blake sees him so differently! I totally get how he fell in love with him. Jude is funny and such a flirt, he doesn’t even realize it.

I love Jude and Blake SO MUCH!!! I needed to say it!

I never doubted Blake, even though he hurt Jude really badly, but we already knew his story. Seeing it from his point of view was still eye-opening and now that we have all the pieces of the puzzle, the story feels complete. Blake is such an angel and he really did try to tell the truth and being in his shoes, we can see how hard it was for him.

The HEA got me all over again. Now I want to reread Until You. And Then You too because Steph is my favorite boy and I was so happy to see him again!

A fun foray into Blake's point of view.

There isn't too much to say, as this is all the same plot points, just from Blake's POV, rehashed. I already went over all that in my Until You review.

This just gave us more insight into Blake's point of view, where he was coming from, why he did what he did, why he acted how he acted. Also since it'd been so long since I read the original book, in some ways this felt new. In others not, because as I read it, some scenes I was remember. Like, I forgot that Blake waits outside Jude's apartment for weeks to show how serious he is about earning his trust back, but once it got to that, I was like 'oh yeah, I remember that now.'

I did hope for a little more on Sarah, Jude's bio mom, now that we were getting Blake's POV - at least after Jude finds out about it all and leaves, I wanted her and Blake to have a much longer conversation than they did - so I tad bummed on that, but not too much.

I guess, also, this was just a bit slow for me at times - and I don't know why, but maybe it was because I'd read the story before? I don't know. I still enjoyed it overall, but it was slow going at times for me.

So not 5 stars for me like the original book, but still a solid, fun read overall.

And at the end of the day, this more like a bonus book, a treat, so it doesn't have to be on par with the book from Jude's POV. It's really just getting to see what was going on in Blake's mind during all of the events of that book, which was real fun.

So definitely worth a read just to get Blake's POV, and to revisit some part of the first books in new ways. A fun bonus book, for sure. (And hey, if we get a book like this for the other MC's that didn't get POV's in this series, I won't be mad about it 😉). And also, this is just a must read if you've read all of this series and loved it, at the very least. And if you loved Jude and Blake.

Can't wait for the next work from this lovely author!

Because Until You is so very well-written, there wasn't really any need for Blake's PoV (and having it would have spoiled the story), but this story, which relates the events of that book from Blake's perspective, is a nice little addition and worth reading, although not essential.

Love Blake and Jude always ♾

It was lovely getting the insight into Blake's POV. It was much angstier than Jude's book. Boy was a goner for Jude.

The dialogue and scenes are mostly the same so something to keep in mind if you are considering reading this - it's very similar to Until You.

Recommended series reading order: Until You -> And Then You -> Maybe You -> Until Jude

Until Jude is a 200+ book telling the story of Until You in Blake’s perspective. It is worthwhile to get some separation from the original story before you pick up this one. (It’s like how you wouldn’t recommend someone reading the Twilight saga for the first time to read Midnight Sun immediately after Twilight, they should read the whole series first before they go back).

Until Jude is a very well done companion novel to Until You. You absolutely must read Until You first to understand what’s going on and the nuances of Jude and Blake’s journey (plus Until You has phenomenal storytelling in a way that couldn’t be replicated in Blake’s perspective.)

If you read and loved Until You, I think you will love Until Jude and Blake’s perspective, though unlikely as much as the original. Something I really appreciated seeing in Blake’s perspective was every conscious choice he had to make in the story to get to that third act. And it’s brutal and heartbreaking, maybe even more so than it was in Until You. My heart hurt again but it was worth it.

It does not pack the same punch as Until You, nor should it stand on its own without the context of Until You, but for me it was still a very worthwhile story that I quite enjoyed enough to rate it 4.5⭐️ rounding up to 5⭐️.
