Centered around the 2011 Libyan Revolution, Libyan Sugar is a road trip through a war zone, detailed through photographs, journal entries and written communication with family and colleagues. A record of photographer Michael Christopher Brown’s (born 1978) life both inside and outside Libya during that year, the work is about a young man going to war for the first time and his experience of that age-old desire to get as close as possible to a conflict in order to discover something about war and something about perhaps a certain definition of life and death.

Libyan Sugar is a journey through the combat zone of the 2011 Libyan revolution by Magnum agency member Michael Christopher Brown.
The book tells the story of a young photojournalist going to war for the first time and his experience of this age-old desire to get as close to the conflict as possible, to learn something about war, life, death, and maybe about himself.

this book deserves more attention than i've given it, but i am already convinced it is brilliant. i'd place it in lineage with the amazing first book on Afghanistan by Ed Grazda, and Bill Burke's books on Vietnam and Cambodia, a book on war that serves as a great memoir and platform for self-discovery. highly recommended.
