Rate this book
Connecticut socialite Maggie Dumont's marriage begins with a grand wedding and great dreams. But her hopes for a happy life are soon shattered by her new husband, the bitter son of a wealthy New York businessman, who catches gold fever and insists they head to wild, lawless Oregon.

The journey westward is hard. To survive,

Maggie must become a different kind of woman than the pampered debutante she’s always been. And when she meets wagon train scout Rafe Morrisey, she finds herself yearning for a different kind of man. Buckskin-clad, principled, and strong, Rafe awakens sensations she has been hungering for.

Now, surrounded by Indian attacks, wolves, and outlaws, Maggie is suddenly tom between duty to her husband and reckless passion with the man who could be her one chance for true happiness. Ahead lies a tragedy she will need all her strength to face... and love only her heart can choose.

I am a USA-TODAY best-selling author with 41 years, 76 books, and numerous writing awards behind me. My major genre is historical romance. I have always written for standard publishers but am now writing strictly for Amazon so I have more freedom to write real history. My most recent publication is SHADOW TRAIL, the 6th book in my Outlaw Hearts series. I also wrote and published my first full-length contemporary story, DANCING BENEATH YOU, in September 2022, a romance involving mystery and a depiction of reservation life in the Badlands of South Dakota. My best sellers are my SAVAGE DESTINY series (7 books) and my OUTLAW HEARTS series. See my website (www.rosannebittner.com) for details on all my books - most available for Kindle and in print. I am known for great love stories filled with real history and high emotion. I have also written many Native American stories, all based on real history.

I love American history. For those of you who have not yet read my books, my stories are generally set in the American West of the 1800s and feature vividly described, historically accurate settings that span the US from Missouri to California, from Canada to Mexico. Many of my books portray the poignant history of our Native Americans, and though the characters are my own, I use real historical locations and events in all my novels. I have also written about the French & Indian wars, American Revolution, the War of 1812, the war with Mexico (the Alamo), and the Civil War.

National magazine ROMANTIC TIMES has called me the "Queen of Western Romance" and an "emotional powerhouse." My husband and I have traveled the west for nearly 40 years and I have visited just about every location mentioned in my books.

I guess I could start by saying, good riddance to Edward. What a selfish character. I do not have anything against or talking about at all his sexuality, just a selfish character in the book. The book ended well so in a sense you could say that the ends justify the means but Edward did not know the means. He just went on this cross-country trip not worrying about his partner. Stringing her along, having affairs, and everybody saying he such a good sensitive person.

I love the way this author brings the old west to life with vivid descriptions, accurate history, and compelling hardships. On her wagon trains heading west, they leave graves along the roadside, some filled with the bones of children, and there is a definite human element to all of it, so that you can't help getting teared up.

I found the characters believable and well drawn, and the romance convincing. So why did I rate it three stars, instead of 4 or 5? For one simple reason: I was very uncomfortable reading about the romance between a married woman and another man.

To be honest, I have put down books when I realized the heroine was already married to someone else, because I didn't want to have to live this journey. Sometimes, I read, especially when the husband is a cruel jerk you want to see dead.

But Edward was a nice guy. The only thing wrong with him was that he's gay, and that just made me sympathize with him. It has to have been hell to be gay in 1850. He was Maggie's best friend for a long time, and in that way, they did love each other.

Which meant there was a dark cloud hanging over the book the entire time. It's not that I condemned Maggie for cheating, not when she wasn't getting fulfilled in her marriage, but I didn't blame Edward for anything except possibly insensitivity and brashness. They were two good people caught in a difficult situation.

I would read this one with caution. You probably know if you can handle the type of love story I've described above, and if you can, this is a good one. Very emotional.

sigh... Maggie and Rafe! This was a hard book to a point to convince myself it was okay to love because of Maggie's budding relationship with Rafe while still married to Edward. Once I allowed myself to see past that and really take a deeper look into Maggie and Edward's relationship and just experience the story, I was captured! Getting to experience the travels out west in almost a diary-type format was a neat switch. I loved watching Maggie really blossom and Rafe find ways to love and protect Maggie from a distance, and fight with himself over it. So, even with some taboo subjects, I loved this story!

**Cheating alert** Other than that, the book was four star worthy at least.
