A forced proximity romance about an injured professional baseball player and the guarded intern overseeing his rehab who’s his coach’s daughter…

Remington

I’ve lived and breathed baseball since I was five years old. The game is my religion, the field my house of worship. Nothing and no one comes before it.

Until her. Scarlet Jones. My teammate’s sister and my coach’s daughter.

I should stay away. Yet I can’t help myself and when I’m injured during a game and require surgery, the first thought I have isn’t that my career may have just ended. It’s that if it does, I lose her before ever having her.

I have three months of rehab. Three months of her living with me full time. Three months to convince her we’re worth the risk.

Scarlet

At thirteen, Remington Tate was my very first crush.

At fourteen, my brother announced to him and the entire team that his rookie poster hung in my closet.

At eighteen… well, I don’t talk about that anymore. Two years of weekly trauma counseling was more than enough.

Now at twenty-one, things have started to shift. I’m falling for Remington all over again. Each glance, smile, and touch have slowly worked their way into my heart. And as we play house during his rehab, I can’t help but wonder about what we could be.

To find out, I'll have to expose the fractured pieces of myself, and I'm not sure I can do that. Even if he makes me feel safe, free, and like I finally want to try.

Sideline Play is book 1 of Nighthawks Dynasty, an interconnected, stand-alone, sports romance series.

New book boyfriend unlocked. Remington Tate everyone. This man I literal perfection. And that is how I am going to convince you too read this book but first...

Can we please talk about how this is a debut novel... like Taylor, you knew what you were doing with this one and it was a smash! I loved everything about this book from the plot, to our cinnamon roll MMC and even the side characters! These two were so unproblematic, there was no third act break up and our MMC was perfect. The only thing that I would have added would be a little drama between Roman and Remi but other than that, it was amazing!

Ok let's get into the nitty gritty. Sideline Play follows Remington Tate, who is the catcher for the Nighthawks, and Scarlet Jones, who is the daughter for the Nighthawks coach and athletic trainer in training for the team. When Remington get hurt, it's Scarlet who is in charge of his rehab. And Remi sees this as his opportunity to make her his! From the start this man has no problem going after Scarlet. He leans into his feelings and he won't let anything get in his way, not even her brother.

Remington is by far the perfect book boyfriend. He is emotionally available, talks openly about his feelings, does not play games and he provides a safe space for Scarlet to be vulnerable. So my question is, where can we find a Remi in real life? Asking for a friend... Now Scarlet, she grew up around baseball. Her father is a baseball player turned coach and she lives, eats and breathes the game. But being a woman means she needs to overcome some adversity and she is determined to make a name for herself. She herself is a pretty strong FMC. She does have some trauma that she experienced in her past that she works through throughout this book and Remington held her hand through the whole process creating a safe environment.

Now let's touch on the spice. This one is spicy. Our girl experienced some assault and trauma in her past. And a way to help her work through that is by reading smut. By doing this she realized there are some kinks she wants to explore. And who is there to help her explore? Our boy Remington. He not only read her books but also helped her explore these kinks. Two kinks that play a big roll in this book includes breeding and daddy kink. So enjoy!

Lastly, I want to talk about the side characters in this book. I absolutely ADORED Scarlet's dad! He is literally the BEST dad ever! They have a truly amazing relationship. And I love seeing healthy parental relationships in books and this is definitely one of those! He dad just was seriously so sweet. I also loved Scarlet's brother Roman. He is overprotective and will do anything for her. Which makes me excited for his book! But can we also talk about Roman's best friend Reeves... this man is also amazing. He provided some amazing comedic relief. And I ask the question, is Reeves getting his own book because it's a NEED not a want.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 but rounded up to 5⭐️

This was easily a five star read!

Remi and Scar are such a cute couple. Their relationship was one of the healthiest, most open, trusting and affectionate, that I have EVER read.

Remi is new book boyfriend material, 100%. He was sweet and supportive but also a little down and dirty, IYKYK! The way he always put Scar first, treated her like his Queen and stood up for his girl and his relationship was *chef's kiss*

I want to see her like this every day for the rest of my fucking life. First thing in the morning, last thing at night, having her, loving her each and every day. Everything else is second, so distant it hardly registers, to the visceral swell in my chest over seeing her like this. As my future.

My new bestie, Scar! Loved her strength, her courage to go for what she wants and her determination to have her cake and eat it too! Definitely a Boss Babe :) She grew up in a man's world, with her dad as a pro athlete, later becoming a coach, her adoptive brother who's a star player himself and the rest of the baseball team and staff. It gave her experience and perspective that not many get in life. But these opportunities also came with some bumps in the road and I felt for all the negative things the press and other people made her go through.

If you like sports romance ⚾, heroines who are girlie girls 🎀, strong family ties 🥰, beautiful slow burn romance 💗, she falls first/he falls harder💞 , daddy spice🔥 and some kink 🤤, please don't hesitate to pick this one up! There is no cheating, no waffling (both MCs fall hard and are 100% devoted to each other), only mild family drama (protective big brother moment but Remi played his part perfectly! Trust me!) and a HEA that will give you all the warm fuzzies!

I'm so excited and happy that the author revealed all our favorite boys will be getting their own books in the near future! Yes, even Colt!

Favorites Bits:
🖤 Remi letting Roman play the protective big brother but also straight up declaring his intensions towards Scar and not backing down.
🖤 The big romantic gesture for their first time together *swoony*
🖤 The wedding!

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The first half of Remi and Scars story had me hooked on the pining, the promise of things to come, the relationships, the backstory, and the baseball (of course) and the second half of this story? PURE SPICY AF SPICEEEE.

That’s right. The spice hits, and then. Does. Not. Quit. for the rest of this book. I love that sh** 😅😂

Remi is seriously the perfect boyfriend. This man is respectful, honest, kind, generous, a filthy talking “daddy” who is a walking green flag. You will find ZERO toxic masculinity in this book from him.

And Scarlett? Well she’s just so sweet. She’s a fighter, a survivor, and she knows what she wants and goes after it. All in. And what she wants and has wanted for YEARS? Remi of course!

This story is FAST PACED. These characters have insta-love connection and really just go all in from most the very beginning. If you don’t love, love.. this might not be the book for you 💕

Remi is seriously the star of the show here. He’s perfection. Cinnamon Roll, but filthy when the time is right. Toys are Remi’s friends, not foe. And he plays well with others 😅

I will absolutely be picking up the other books in this series, this is an easy, fun, spicy read with very little conflict, and zero big drama moments. Older Baseball Big 🍑 Boy meets Younger, Physio Intern, Breeding K*nk Loving Girl, they fall in love and live a very sweet HEA. Say less. 👏🏻

It started out nicely, they both want to be with each other. Then, when an injury brings them closer, it felt hollow. It’s basically 100 pages of smut. They say their, “I love you’s” rather quickly but where was the connection?

I’m the minority here but I wished there would’ve been more character development, less insta-love/lust and more actual plot than smut page after page.

And there’s daddy kink which is no 👎 for me.

THIS FREAKING BOOK🥹🥹🥹

I knew the moment I saw the tropes, I HAD to read it. It exceeded every expectation I had. This book was such a beautiful love story between two people who just knew, after all the soft innocent touches, discreet glances each others way, flirtatious comments that started off innocent, but grew, that they were meant for each other.

I am wholeheartedly OBSESSED with Remington Tate. This man is the perfect MMC. He is attentive, kind, giving, patient, compassionate, so loving, and down right filthy in the bedroom.

Scarlet is a bright, bubbly, fierce FMC. She has so much trauma from an event in her past, but she never let it take away her spirit. She worked hard towards a career she was always so passionate about. Her love and loyalty to her brother, father and their baseball team was unmatched.

The connection these two have from page one is beautiful. It only grows once they live together for 10 weeks during Remi’s rehab after a hip injury takes him out for the season. Scar is training as an athletic trainer and Remi is her first one on one client. Their friendship grows and their feelings for each other stop being ignored.

I was smiling like a freaking fool throughout this entire book. Remi showed so much patience towards Scar when she wasn’t ready to reach certain levels in their relationship. I loved everything about these two.

And the freaking spice in this book? OHMYGOD👏😮‍💨 It was so good. The mouth on that man was pure filth and I ate it up!

And please let’s talk about every single side character in this book. LOVED THEM ALL.

Roman(Scarlet’s brother), Reeves (her friend/brother’s friend/teammate) and Colt, her dad, the team’s coach. Every single one deserves a book and I can’t wait to see what Taylor releases next 😍

Thank you so freaking much Taylor James for sending me an ARC of this book.

Remington. Freakin’. Tate. That is all.

No but actually y’all this book as SO freaking good. Injured MLB catcher ends up with the coach’s daughter /athletic trainer intern??? AND they are forced to stay in his cabin in Gatlinburg during his recovery?? Say less.

I am normally not a breeding kink girly but holy sh!t!!! I ATE this one up!! The spicy scenes are next level (let’s also use this time to say she is a virg!n!!) Wow. The way Remi takes care of her is just absolutely perfection.

Scarlet is damaged, she knows what she wants, but she is just a little afraid to go there. The way her family and Remi talk her through it is just beautiful and I loved every second of it. The banter, the found family, the text threads. Everything was perfection.

Do yourself a favor and bless your kindles & bookshelves with this novel on 9.19.24.

I love a sports romance and the beginning seemed strong but about 45% in, it started to lose me. Things just didn't feel like they were connecting and the plot got lost. I didn't get a sense of character development either. I was expecting more from the injured player/athletic training intern trope but that plot point felt like it was barely touched on beyond one or two scenes.

In fact, this book was sex heavier than I expected. To the point it took over from focusing on the plot and it was sex scene after sex scene 50% in and on. At one point a sex scene lasted 20+ pages and that just completely lost me. Sex can be fun to read, but not when it's being jammed down my throat (hah...sex pun...). I ended up skimming the last 25-40% of the book once it became clear it was more focusing on the sex rather than....what was the plot again? I almost wanted a third act breakup just to give this book some sort of purpose.

- Age gap 9 years ( 21, 30)
- Baseball player // physical therapist student
- Coach’s daughter and teammate’s sister
- V!rgin heroine
- No 3 act breakup
- Breeding kink
- No owd/omd

A good book with great chemistry and communication, they were so good together and he was so in love with her! Sweet, honest, and dirty (and inky as dirty with her, never with former W)

As soon as she’s back after turning 21, he feels like he sees her for the first time, beautiful and loving. From that moment, all he could think about beside baseball was her. And he’s been pining after her for a year, and after an injury he decided to finally go for her.

Safety:
- Hero: Celibate the last two years, after breaking up with girlfriend. They we’re together 2 years, but he never loved her, but he liked stability, and he tolerated her, they didn’t often have sex either. Heroine was 16 when he started dating her, so totally okey that he hadn’t fallen for her yet. And loved it when he says: «In the two years I spent with her, I never felt even a drop of what I feel for you.»
- Hero: Always liked being in a relationship, so not slept with a lot of women.
- Hero: The type of sex they have, he never did that with other
- Heroine: she’s a V
- Heroine: check triggers, she was SA by brothers “friend”

Unfortunately this book felt dragged out towards the ending, and a lot of s*x wich I totally love, but in this case it just felt a little boring at the end - they had great s*x, but I need more action toward the end, otherwise it’s just like 100 pages with epilogue.

DNF @23%
there’s something I do like about Taylor’s writing, but this is just giving me way too many icks

I have 2 major icks with age gap romances, and they’re both in this already:
- the nickname “baby girl” - please stop referring to her as a child
- him knowing her as an actual child, and oh suddenly she’s 21 & you’re in love?? nope

I have some other issues but those are the main reasons for a DNF, the nickname especially will continue to bother me 🙃

Remington is such a great book boyfriend, Scarlet is such a strong and interesting female lead, and the side characters add so much to the story. I love how Remington reads Scarlet’s smutty books and helps reenact scenes and kinks. This takes an age gap, coach’s daughter, brother’s teammate, forbidden romance and makes it sweet and spicy with low angst considering how many forbidden tropes are here- AND I LOVED IT. this was really well written and I can’t wait to see what happens next for the characters with that cliffhanger!!!

There are some pretty big issues with this story. The first one I noticed was that it was written poorly, instead of the story being told and progressing so we can see them actually grow as a couple and see any kind of chemistry blossom, we get the first chapter which gives brief back story and then the catalyst. Then one long worded chapter about her feelings for him and poorly half explained tidbits of the last weeks and how she’s falling for him…..and we don’t get to see the why or how or anything. But suddenly they’re in love, like SO in love.

The story starts out telling us about her poorly bred Doberman, Winnie. 80lb, scared of her own shadow Winnie, yet through out the story she talks about lifting her up and carrying her around…..the 80lb Doberman…totally a thing…if the story were initially written with a small breed dog that is. Which is my assumption here, yet the author failed to not only fix those pieces but apparently edit it because they would’ve been caught immediately. Small fries sure but so small they stood out and took a star for laziness.

We get the story about Scarlets first year in college where she was SA’d, her first ever bf was a controlling abuser with a jealousy streak cause obvs, who force touched her to completion if you catch my drift, which of course makes her not so perfect and so so broken. Bc she has to have some major issue, right? Being raised with no mother by her single teenage dad while he played in the MLB wasn’t enough.
My biggest issue with that scenario really was the part where her brother does the right thing and beats the literal shit out of the guy, which bravo, but then she and her dad pay the kid off so he will drop the charges,-not my issue, I actually understood the reasoning there, what wasn’t plausible in the SLIGHTEST, was how their lawyers and the police apparently said the charges against her brother would’ve been dropped by any judges or jury for what he did considering the situation..
-THAT is not at all realistic for the level in which she was SA’d which if we’re honest was extremely minor and imo did not warrant all the drama. No cop, no lawyer would advise the charges would’ve been dropped, cause they wouldn’t have. “He made sure he will never be able to get an erection again.”
Again bravo, but brother would’ve gotten some charges.

A lot of things were just random, beginnings of chapters literally came out of nowhere. I had no idea where we were or what was going on so many times. It didn’t help that she’d jump around from the past to present to her talking to herself to fucking mars it seemed at times. One minute she’s freaking out excited about him heavily dropping hints about his attraction and intentions for her, the next we’re his pov he hears her crying and then a blood curdling scream…no idea why or where, wasn’t even aware she was napping or triggered. Because there was no story telling.

A big plot here is that she is still a virgin, however bc of her experience she’s taken over her sexuality and is the absolute horniest female on the planet with a storage container of extreme toys, okay not the storage container part but the rest yes. Now this to me is a serious question, what is virginity? Is it the absence of penetration? Is it the absence of penetration by a penis? If so does that mean all lesbians who have never been with a man are virgins?
No, I don’t think so. Maybe my personal opinion which is fine, but virginity to me is just as much as the absence of penetration as it is the absence of penetration by a penis, and if one has happened the other doesn’t matter it’s just as valid. So if you’re fucking yourself with full grown dragon dildos that also cum in you at-least once a day, but just haven’t taken that step with a guy yet…you’re not a virgin sweetie. Which is the case here. And don’t even get me started on their “first time” she just straddled and road a fake dick in the shower like the best western cowgirl but oh my god we need to go slow because -a penis- *gasp*

Gtfo

After that which I’ll be honest I had to skim SO MUCH I was done. I did a word search to even see if she got pregnant oh which is another plot, breeding kink oh AND, ddlg (which was a huge turn off for me, just didn’t fit the characters or story AT ALL, really seemed more of a how much shit can we pile into this mess for a trope casserole, or maybe we just never got to know the characters to see it.). And I don’t even care if she did this was just a really poorly written and lazy story.

Listen. Remington Tate is about to be your new book boyfriend. The man is immaculate. Sweet, supportive, head over heels in love, a great catcher’s butt, and a beast in the bedroom. To that last fact - the spice in this book will have you needing to stick your head in the freezer to cool down.

And Scarlet - well, you’ll want to be her best friend because she is just the sweetest, most down to earth FMC. I love a book where I’d want the MMC for myself but then I like the FMC too much to ever even think about it, and that’s totally the case here.

Taylor wrote a debut that had me all in and rooting for the MCs, fully invested in the side characters getting their own books, laughing, tearing up, and panting. I am fully in my baseball romance era, and I have a strong suspicion this will be one of my favorite series!

i really liked the side characters, and i hope that daddy colt gets a book.

"I'm not changing my mind about you, Scar. Nothing you've done or experienced will make me look at you differently. The only way I leave is if you ask me to. Otherwise, I'm here and I'm in this. I will fight for you, with you, and choose you. Any fallout that comes from us being together, I will face head on, at your side."

REMINGTON IS SO PERFECT😭😭😭

“I think the worshipful devotion I have for my wife is a spell uniquely crafted by her. She's bewitched and ensnared me, and in spite of being the one to command her body and pleasure, I kneel for her and her witchcraft, begging to never be released.”

DNF.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. I will leave this as a DNF - unfortunately the writing made things very difficult to follow action and dynamics felt a bit too disorienting in the beginning for me to want to continue. I recognize I am a fairly harsh reader when it comes to baseball in particular, so by chapter 3 when I couldn't follow the action or the inner monologue of a professional baseball player not knowing how to run the bases properly, I had to put this aside.

Book: Sideline Play (Nighthawks Dynasty Series)
Author: Taylor James
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice:🌶️🌶️🌶️

Scarlet and Remi have had this undeniable pull for years. She’s his coach's daughter, the teams PT student, and baseball's princess. Remi is the veteran catcher and captain who can’t seem to look away from the girl who grew up to be a stunning woman right in front of him. But a mountain of obstacles between them has kept them apart until now. When Remi has an injury that requires off season training, his first choice is Scarlet. Now, together for the winter in his cabin, these two have no more resolve to stay apart. And this get very real, very fast.

This was such a fun, light read. The characters are easy to love and the story line was really good! Remi is so wholeheartedly in love with Scar and it is so adorable to see this relationship develop. Scar has to overcome some very personal and emotional trauma and Remi holds her hand through the whole thing. My only complaint is the lack of conflict. It just didn’t keep me guessing and was really predictable. Over all though, I did have a fun time reading this first installment of the Nighthawks Dynasty series!

Remington is everything. He’s devoted and sweet and everything you could ever dream off (a little spice doesn’t hurt either). The characters are amazing - as anything Taylor James writes is bound to be.

The family dynamics are a hoot and a half and you can’t help but wish you were part of the chaos. Dont get me started on Daddy Colt. I’ll forever come to his beck and call!
I think my favorite part about Taylor’s book is the family dynamics and the devotion they have for one another. And Remi is just as devoted to Scarlett! It’s incredible.

Let us NOT forget her puppy - Winnie. Icing on the cupcake *wink wink*

Cinnamon roll MMC
Professional baseball
Age gap
Breeding kink
Coach’s daughter
Virgin trope
Insta-love
No third act break up or drama

It checked a lot of boxes for me, but it missed the mark. The MMC was telling the FMC that he wanted her to have her babies before they ever even kissed. The virgin FMC is calling him Daddy the second things got remotely intimate. I LOVE a breeding kink, but their immediate talk about filling her with his seed made me cringe.

DNF 65%, engaged within 6 weeks? Saying they love eachother with quite literally no back story on their relationship? Give me a break. Men don’t talk this way and they certainly don’t exist in the real world. As much as I love a sappy romance this book gives women an unrealistic sense of love. no thanks

"People see her and want to use her up until there's nothing left because she's incandescent, and it's human nature to want to hell in that touristy until envy bleeds in and has us snuffing it out."

"By the time she's done, I'll be useless for anything not involving the devout worship of her, my soul leaving my body to be collected by her, one caress of her tongue and grind of her hips at a time."

Sideline Play was a very sweet romance between Remi and Scarlet, with serious undertones and topics that some may need to double check the trigger warnings with. 💛

I loved how obsessed with Scarlet Remi was. From the very beginning you could tell he had feelings for her and that they continued to grow with time. I feel that him losing what he did and having to grow from that helped him a lot in seeing what he wanted/needed in a relationship for his future.

Even with Scarlet having a childhood crush on Remi, it was nice to see that evolve as she became an adult after she had her own life experiences, as unexpected and traumatic as they were. And sweet Winnie and Scarlet, ugh, that pupper deserves the whole wide world. 💕

I do wish that we explored Scarlet's career a little more, just personally I felt that her personal growth was mostly love related and I would've loved seeing her become more in tune with herself outside of that as well. So I'm hoping MAYBE that gets explored a little further down the road in the series.

Her father/daughter relationship was so incredible! I loved how dedicated her dad was even being a young girl parent, and how he completely revolved his whole career and life around being able to raise her how he wanted. To be able to give her the support and child needs, especially when their parent is in the limelight. Colt brought me a lot of joy!

And let's not forget about Roman! Her brother was your typical overbearing and overprotective older sibling, but quite frankly with good reason! He only wants the best for Scarlet and you can see the sibling appreciation throughout their relationship and it was really nice to see! I can't WAIT to get more about him and his backstory. 👀

'"What?" I demanded as Roman praises God, Jesus, and the maker of Dr. Pepper for small miracles.'

More 4 1/2 🌟 Sideline Play is more than a baseball romance as it touches on a few heavy topics which the main female character Scarlet has experienced. Yes baseball is mentioned throughout the book but it’s more about the growth of Scarlet and her letting someone in to see her real self. Honestly Remington was perfect with his patience, his compassion and how he provides a safe space for Scarlet. Their growth together was a dream to read. This one is definitely spicy, the whole second half is spice and at times I wish there was a little more to their story, like her career and his return to baseball. I adored Scarlet’s dad and brother and we definitely need a book for her dad! This was a great read and would recommend it if you love an age gap spicy baseball romance. I received a complementary copy from the author.
