Lion Breed and enforcer Rule Breaker has a few rules he doesn't break. But having sex with a woman outside his own breed, even a human woman, is not one of them. Especially when it's Gypsy, the party girl who's determined to lead him on a merry chase. But she won't be able to outrun the lion--or the man in hot pursuit. What he suspects is mating heat may not be that at all. Just his animal instincts rioting, pacing, irritated whenever he's away from her. What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the Breeds--for she's possibly been working against them...

She won the 2009 RT Award for erotica. Leigh was born in Ohio and raised in Martin County, Kentucky, US.
3.5 stars I have read every book in what is one of my favorite series and I look forward to going back to the Breeds World that the author has created.
Rule Breaker is the 29th book in the series….quite an amazing feat to still get readers excited about each book that is released.
The main characters in this story are lion breed Rule Breaker. who has been around for a long time in the series. He and his brother, Lawe (who has found his mate and HEA in the 26th book, Lawe’s Justice) work as Jonas Wyatt’s enforcers. And Gypsy Rum McQuade, who was traumatized by her abduction and torture by coyotes when she was fifteen before being rescued by the Breeds. Rule is determined never to accept a mate and mating heat due to what he as a child, when his mother and her mate were horribly tortured and killed.
Gypsy is now working undercover for a secret organization named Unknowns, whose mission is to protect the Breeds.
My thoughts: Wow, there’s a lot happening in this story. So many characters, so many subplots that had my head spinning. At times I lost the “plot” …who was who and what were they actually doing!!! Whilst Rule & Gypsy (talk about wacky and weird names…Gypsy Rum and her sister Kandy Sweet!!!!!) are fighting each other off…he is adamant she’s not his mate…because his glands are telling him so…yes, his brother tells him she is…but no Rule says no way!!! Gypsy is doing the “not going there” thing with Rule, whilst feeling a little twinge of betrayal by not admitting her role in the Breeds world….and boy does she know how to lie…even when poor Rule can “smell” her deceit!!!! Yes, these Breeds have an awesome sense of smell!!!
In between we have Dane, Jona’s South African half-brother, and Dog, the unknown coyote up to some shenanigans involving the Unknowns…..still have no clue what they role is in there.
Most of the story centers on Amber, Jona’s daughter who was injected with some powerful and dangerous drug and who is trying to find a cure. It seems Gideon and Judd…check out previous books…have the secret to saving Amber.
I enjoyed meeting up with previous characters and seeing how their lives are progressing…..even though it was a brief glimpse. I would have liked a bit more about them. Instead we have pages and pages and sex and mating heat between Rule & Gypsy, which I must admit didn’t do much for me…..it was the same thing over and over and over again….. I would have preferred some of these pages to be dedicated to more interesting and exciting things….like what is the Unknowns, what is Dane plotting??? I would love if Dane, Dog, Cassie (loved her very brief brief appearance here), Gideon’s stories.
I was happy that Rule & Gypsy found their HEA….but I wasn’t crazy about some of the aspects of this story…it felt a bit too long drawn in some way.
But as usual, my interest in this amazing Breed World will keep me waiting eagerly for the next installment.
In a Nutshell: Readers who are like me and have read 28 books in this series may as well read this, the 29th.
Why I Read this Book: 28 books into this series is an investment I either need to give up or stick with forever.
What I Liked: The relationship development is the same in all the books: one or both leads fight the mating but the lust for each other prevents them from separating until they accept their emotional mating as well. Gypsy and Rule are no different than the 28 couples who came before them in this series. This relationship is based on uber-sexual connection so the erotica is well done. When this series first started it was rare because it featured anal sex, oral sex on the female lead, and massive amounts of bedroom scenes. Now in romance this kind of erotica is found in nearly every book so it’s not rare or titillating. Still, erotica readers will like this romance well enough.
What I Also Liked: Part of this series charm has been all the secondary characters. Dog, the mysterious Coyote Breed, returns here and I like that. Dane, the lion hybrid Breed, is manipulating events and readers are unclear if he’s good or bad. Some of the other couples from the series have cameos here and that’s always nice.
I also liked that FINALLY readers get some resolution on Jonas and Rachel’s infant daughter. She’s been in mortal danger since book 21 and I was mightily sick of this plot thread. No, it’s not entirely wrapped up but at least there is meaningful progression!
What I Didn’t Like: This book is no different than the 28 before it. The romance is sexy, superficially emotional and develops just as readers will expect. The plot just adds more kinks in the series plot which tries to add levels of intrigue and somehow just confuses me. Finally, even though I liked some of the secondary characters the author has just introduced too many. This book has a Breed on every corner, named and not, and I just know this means we’ll get 100 more books in this series.
IMO: Series fans will read this as I did. Others should pass as the plot will make no sense, there are too many secondary characters, and the romance is stock. *review copy provided by publisher*
Rule and Lawe Breaker are the two brothers, lion Breeds, high level enforcers who were never apart and who used to make fun of the mated Breeds.
Nowadays Lawe is happily mated to Diane, while Rule is trying everything he can not to be mated. Basically, he is avoiding the girl that he suspects that she is his potential mate. Of course it is really fun watching him loosing it. Because it is certain that Rule will lose it. No question about it.
Gypsy McQuade’s life changed in one single night when she was fifteen: She lost her brother, she met the Breeds and Rule noticed her. Since then, she is trying to forget her pain and her bitterness from her brother’s death and her parents’ indifference (what are they hiding?) by partying all night. 9 years after her little world shattered, she definitely does not want to mate to a stubborn Breed.
Soon Gypsy and Rule will have to work together to discover a traitor and they both have to come to terms with the fact that they are compatible to mate and nature will take its course.
Lots of old and new characters and their stories are tangled with the story of Gypsy and Rule:
-Jonas with the help of Dane (the lion hybrid Breed) this time is still manipulating, but he has the noble cause of saving his daughter. Amber is finally saved in this book and her condition is stable. Needless to say she will never be as she used to be and now she is more than just a human child. -Rhyzan Brannigan is introduced. A 6 foot 6 green eyed badass coyote who will be Jonas Wyatt's assistant director to the Bureau of Breed Affairs. Interesting character. -Dog, the mysterious Coyote Breed is also making an appearance. -Gideon/ Graeme story is being prepared for the next book.
This book concludes unfinished story lines, which made me really relieved. Especially little Amber’s storyline, that has been dragging on so long, has finally a resolution. Moreover, I really enjoyed the main love story of the book with Rule and Gypsy.
It took me a bit longer to read this book than normal because I just couldn’t get into it at first, HoWever once I really got involved, I realized you do need the background so you have to read the first part. So much happens in this book that is integral to the ongoing storylines.
There are several ongoing storylines that are moved forward in this book and I won’t give away spoilers but I will list them. One is the the storyline about Morningstar Martinez being the Mother of Rule and Lawe, and the fact that some of the Navajo leaders were her family and were searching for her or any children she may have had in the labs. A few books back Rule let them know that he and Lawe were two of those children and Morningstar was killed and he wanted nothing to do with any of them but it wasn’t brought up again since then.
Another storyline is the ongoing search for Judd and Gideon now that Fawn and Honor have been found and are being protected by Jonas. The issue of Amber’s health after the injection Brandenmore gave her has been ongoing for a long time and Jonas believes those 4 are the key to saving her.
Gideon has changed his name to Graeme and his insanity is slowly leaving and he is becoming sane for the most part now that he recognizes the blood Fawn gave him to save his life didn’t really cause Feral Fever as he thought. Gideon/Graeme is one of the most interesting characters in this series I actually can’t wait to read more about him! So much happens in the second half of this book, you just can’t miss this one.
Also the romance between Gypsy and Rule is very hot. I give this one a heat index of 5 out of 5 flames 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. The storyline is good once It gets moving along. One thing I can’t wait for is a story about Dane Vanderale, he is still pining after Harmony and he is just too cool to pine over a woman that loves someone else. Dane really needs his own mate.
I have been a Breed fan since I picked up 'Megan's Mark' some four years ago, and I often find myself making up a list of Breed books I want to see written, and Rule was definitely on that list. He may not have been on the top, but he was on it for damn sure, now I can cross him off and wait on Dane and Dogs books.
Rule Breaker is the kind of emotionally traumatic book that leaves you sitting wrecked on the floor mumbling about sadistic authors who are also angels with white pearly wings and hearts made of cotton candy. There was always a sense of emotional overload in every scene of this book, whether it be from arousal, anger, fear, need, disgust, regret, sadness, or happiness (at the end). Leigh had the distinct ability to pull it all out of her characters and then making you feel it like an over powered punch to the gut. A lot of authors lack this ability or can't sustain it for long, but Leigh's got the secret to it locked down and uses it to her advantage.
Gypsy McQuade's a new character for us long standing breeds fans and she fits right in, I promise. I won't lie and tell you I thought good thoughts about her, when I first read the synopsis for this book, because I didn't. I honestly didn't want to read this book, because I swore she was going to make me hate this book, but she surprised me—Leigh surprised me, the whole damn book surprised me. Gypsy is a strong, intelligent, independent, lonely woman, but her job demands certain things from her... or so she tells herself (not in those words, but you get my drift.) She has specifically shaped her life, to not let anyone in and too not dredge up old feelings. She has worked hard to bury her past and memories, but some things aren't meant to be forgotten and they most certainly aren't meant to hold a person back. She is so closed off from everything and everyone, that she doesn't feel much of anything, until Rule Breaker makes eye contact.
Rule Breaker has three rules that he has lived by:
#1. Never have sex with a woman outside his own subspecies, especially a human woman.
#2. Never, at any time, accept a mission concerning a female when Jonas Wyatt stinks of a lie.
#3. Run don't walk, skip or stumble. Run, hell for leather away from any female, human or breed, when his desire for her appears, in any way, to have so much as a single sign of Mating Heat
He takes these rules to heart and back, but he has good reason too, even IF his mating is inevitable. He is so convinced that Gypsy isn't his mate, that he doesn't see the signs until its too late to run, but that's what happens when you mess with a Lions mate, especially when that lion is Rules own subconscious. I did not think anyone could be more manipulating than jonas, but Leigh proved me wrong with not just one but three manipulators, who aren't even close to Jonas level. But they try–really hard. Rule made a conscious decision to have Gypsy for the sole reason of there not being any Mating heat, but he is knocked on his ass and shown the error of his ways, and I believe he would have gotten to the mating part, without the help of his Lion, it just would have taken a little longer and a lot more fight.
When you first open the book and start reading you are hit with so much emotion, its hard to deal and I found myself rereading some parts to get it all processed. Trauma is a tame word to use when describing what happens, but its the only word I have to use. It gets slightly better once its all over, but nothing could diminish what happened, not time, not family, not anything and it carries through the book, like an under current that is waiting to sweep you up again and make you burn with every emotion it can drag out of you. It was an amazing start to the book, and I don't think I would have liked any other beginning Leigh could have written. She weaved an intricate story of possible deceit, deceit, seemingly impossible love and new beginnings.
The touches of Jonas and Dane that we get, only add to the intrigue for the two and I think I love Dane more because I always knew he wasn't who he played at being. This book was all about not judging a book by its cover. This book honestly had me worried, but it was misplaced worry, and I am honored to have gotten a chance to review it.
Book Pages and Dripping ink gives RULE BREAKER five Black Roses and a must read stamp of approval.
Wow, this book was sooooo much better than Stygian's Honor!! I have to say i was really nervous to read this because the last one was quite boring and also because it was getting such mixed reviews, similar to how it was with the last book.
It was nowhere near on par with her better books but there was a definite improvement here, that's for sure! Here's a small little breakdown of what/who was in this book and my thoughts....
Rule Lora Leigh did something completely different with this book than she has with others and i have to admit, i was slightly confused in the beginning, not having a clue what was going on but once a little bit more was explained things got really interesting. I actually kind of liked how Rule's "animal" acted as a separate being, sneaking around all those years being devious (ala Jonas Wyatt), putting things in motion withOUT Rule even knowing about it! That was strange but kinda cool! I certainly did not see anything like that coming!
Dane Vanderale I LOVE him!!...he was such a big part of this book and he was everywhere! Since he really hasn't been around for the past few books, i completely forgot what a schemer he is, he can def. give his brother a run for his money! And i also forgot about his feelings for Harmony, that's so sad and i am SO looking forward to him finding his mate!
Jonas Wyatt He is the Grand Poobah of schemers! That man has been the ever present manipulator in everyones' lives but i think in this book he might have actually been out-manipulated and out-schemed!
Gideon This is a breed that is quickly turning out to be the "dark horse" in the game everyone seems to be playing and i.am.loving.HIM!! After hiding in the shadows all this time, the man/breed is finally making his appearance and in ways no one sees coming...well, some do and that was another rather shocking revelation!
Dog This breed has been around on and off throughout this series, with a lot of mystery surrounding him... Is he a council coyote? Is he Jonas' coyote? Does he just work for the highest bidder? IS HE CASSIE'S MATE!!?? Ha, he was in this book quite a bit, working with Dane, of all people!! Cassie was in a few parts but not much at all and she never seems to be in the same place at the same time as Dog..then again her father, Dash, doesn't allow ANY coyote breeds to be around when his daughter is so that could be why. I'm not really sure why the fans are questioning whether or not he is Cassie's mate since they've never really had any interaction but it's obvious her mate IS a coyote breed and Dog has certainly been the mysterious bad boy coyote to watch so i guess time will tell.
Gypsy She was the heroine of the story and i've put her at the bottom of my list because the other "main characters" i enjoyed much more than i did her. She wasn't awful...no annoying over the top alpha female here, she was actually alright but the thing that bugged me was how she kept blaming herself for her brother's death, over and over and over and over... it was redundant and retarded!!! Her explanation/reasoning for feeling she was to blame was silly and without merit!!
The other rather silly thing in this book were the NAMES!! There was Gypsy Rum, her sister Kandy Sweet, who runs the family store which happens to be called the Gingerbread House...a sweets and gift store! Oh, and their parent's names were Hansel and Greta!! Lol!!
Aside from those few things, this book was def. a HUGE improvement over the last!! The romance was better (although i still sometimes skimmed the forever lasting sex scenes) and the action/suspense/intrigue was interesting enough to keep my attention. There were still a few spots that dragged here and there but overall MUCH BETTER!!
This book most certainly gives me hope that Lora Leigh might just be slowly getting her mojo back!! :)
2.5 The first thing you should do before reading this book is get your life jacket ready. There is a massive flood, flow, drip, soaking, sopping, seeping wetness going on. Gypsy, has to be wettest woman in the fictional world. After hearing her describe her leaking disorder for far too many pages I had to hear her bed mate talking about riding all that wetness over and over. I swear the book's pages started to curl from the moisture.
Rule Breaker, the lion, honest and true, yeh right. Okay so Mr. Rule has a commitment phobia we get that he brings it up nearly every time he talks. So live it and shut it already I got it. He promises his virgin mate that he'll never push her, he believes no means no. Yes he said that, promised all heart felt and all. Then while his animal is "claiming" her he has to take her rear and not tell her what he plans. He starts probing around and she's begging, crying "no, NO ! please Rule no" so what does he do, tells her it's okay baby and he does it anyway beacuse his animal needs to arse claim her !
The rest of the book, meh. Cowardly Lion Finds mate, claims her
Fillers, complicated lines, no backtrack or updates to previous books to catch up. Charters were ok but some wold building would be nice ones in a while. Thought it would never finish. A killer to actually read all the way to the end. I actually read 3 books in between this one to get some breathers. 2-3 star rating. Wish it was shorter, more to the point with way less fillers.
Without the sex scenes it was just as watching bold and the beautiful. Even if you missed episodes, you would never miss anything important.
Ms Leigh getting back to the main storylines which was good. I did have to try and wrack my brains to work out who some of the 'older' characters were and how they fit in and why Jonas was looking for them, but I sort of got there in the end - Ms Leigh doesn't really give us many recaps which would have worked better for me. Glad to finally read about some sort of resolution with regards to Amber (Jonas' step-daughter) and her condition.
In my opinion, the original mainstream paperbacks (Megan's Mark, Harmony's Way, Tanner's Scheme, Dawn's Awakening, Bengal's Heart, Lion's Heat and especially Mercury's War and Coyote's Mate) were the best of this series. Rule Breaker does not work as a stand alone book; I was confused, and I have read all the Breed stories. I almost stopped reading this book after the 3rd or 4th chapter, and I did skim over some of the sex scenes. The plotting in Rule Breaker is tortuously convoluted, and I often reread pages, only to find I still did not understand who was plotting against whom. The book could have been shorter, with many of the graphic, wordy descriptions of Gypsy's and Rule's mutual arousal omitted or shortened in the early chapters, and several of the very repetitive sex scenes omitted. Jonas's, Dane's, Dog's, and Gideon's continuous plotting has become tedious and impossible to untangle. Several interesting new characters were introduced, but unless Leigh returns to the tighter plotting and engaging story lines present in the earlier books, dedicated readers may continue to be disappointed.
Breeds 29 - This is one of my original "guilty pleasure" reads and I have followed the series through dodgy plot resolutions and missing chapters, through three publishers and now hardcover release. I guess I'll be reading to the last page in the last book...
Rule Breaker follows the somehow oh so addictive Breeds formula - new facets and resisting of the mating bond, machinations of Jonas Wyatt, the usual "controversial" claiming but does move the story forward. We get resolution for one storyline, more information on another as slowly we move to the big one, Cassandra Sinclair's Happily Ever After!
I will say however with the move to hardcover and 448 pages long there were parts that could have been edited but I guess Lora Leigh thought that she had to give readers value for money... I would have preferred she continued in paperback and kindle first release, I hate waffle.
I'm done with you.. You suck. You are going in the trash... You're Ri-Damn-Diculous! & ticking me off cos you're so dang boring. Just when I'm about to toss you in the trash, something happens that pulls my interest a bit, then POOF! it's gone. Just as quickly as it came. smh
NEVER again will I allow myself to be so vulnerable & buy another Breed novel.
I'm already in a fragile state cos I don't have my Kindle in my possession. I don't need this aggravation from you right now...
The 29th installment of Breed Series by Lora Leigh. Yup, 29, second longest series I read after In Death series by J.D Robb. And I asked myself, why I read it? Because the mystery just keep plying on top of the mystery. I want the answer!!!
I didn't really love this book. But still enjoy it though. My few rambling thoughts :
1. Complicated lines - (I even questioned myself if there's a chance that my English skill deteriorating) which made me read the same passage over and over again and keep getting nowhere near understand what the heck they were talking about. Its made the plotting confusing.
2. Too many characters. It's okay you had abundant of secondary characters but please give us explanation or simple detail of who they are. Backtrack please. Leigh just keep throwing names after names. I read all the previous installment and still it was hard to remember them all. Well maybe we should read the previous book (all 28 of them? Heck No).
3. The romance was repetitive. The same formula - resist the mating heat.
4. The hero and heroine was quite likeable.
5. I want Dane and Dog story. Who are they mate?? Dying to know.
I realize that this is the 20th book in the Breeds series and since I've only read 2 of the preceding ones I can't expect to catch EVERY reference and know EVERY secondary character but, Jesus Fucking Christ, this book made no Goddamned sense.
It was so confusing, so convoluted, pulled in so many secondary characters. so many different organizations, both secret and extra-secret, and so many spies and schemers and manipulators who all thought that they alone knew what was going on that I couldn't make heads or tails of any of it. Who the hell are all these people? Who are the good guys? Who's on what side? Why does every organization seem to have super-extra special-mega-secret informants in each other's ranks? Is everyone in this series a double or triple agent? Does ANYBODY know who they really work for? Is ANYBODY actually the mastermind here?
This was a really, REALLY long book and while it was going along okay for the first 2/3 or so, it completely went off the rails and over a cliff in the last 1/3. That's when the focus shifted from being primarily about Rule and Gypsy, and over to all these secondary plot lines with double, triple and quadruple-crosses. It made our hero and heroine into insignificant side characters in their own story and it sucked.
Like I said, the last 1/3 of the book was really confusing. The conclusions to too many storylines were thrown in without enough explanation for an uninitiated reader to keep up.

Yes... Rule Breaker is the twenty-ninth title in Lora Leigh’s Breed Series (this includes all of the novellas). I know that sometimes I can’t believe I’ve stuck around with this series for this long. But I just can’t quit it. It’s my crack. And while there have been some not as great titles in recent history, I am happy to report that Rule Breaker is an exciting and passionate story - better than the last few.
Nine years ago, Gypsy Rum McQuade was kidnapped by council Coyote Breeds and forced to watch her big brother murdered. If not for Jonas and his Breed enforcers, she would have been raped and killed as well. Since that time, Gypsy has blamed herself for Mark’s death, and has aligned herself with a secretive Navajo group, collecting intel in hopes of redeeming herself.
Rule Breaker is one of Jonas’s top enforcers and is set to take over as Investigative Commander of the Bureau of Breed Affairs and head the offices in New Mexico. Jonas needs Rule to find an informant (for the Unknown, a group of six Navajo of legend), while Gypsy, along with her sister Kandy, are suspects. Rule wants Gypsy with a fierceness nearing obsession, but he is convinced she is not his mate because he is not experiencing the signs. Meanwhile, Jonas is convinced the Unknown exist and are protecting the people and answers he needs to save his daughter, Amber.
Rule Breaker is a MUST read for fans of the Breeds series; however it is a climatic story and one really needs to be up-to-date with the current over-arcing storyline before picking up this book. The story picks up with Jonas trying to find a way to save his adopted daughter, Amber. He believes the answers are with a group of individuals who escaped Breed Labs long ago. The search for these individuals has been the focus of the storyline since Jonas’ book. Finally, the pieces all fall into place, and readers are rewarded with some answers and long-awaited action.
Rule and Gypsy have a passionate and heart-felt romance. While their courtship shares similarities and repeating-themes from earlier couples, Ms. Leigh created enough differences that I was never bored with the pair. I felt that their problems were uniquely their own, and the heartache was poignantly real. While Rule doesn’t believe Gypsy is his mate, it is obscenely obvious to everyone else. The way he handles the moment when he begins to realize Gypsy is his mate was utterly fantastic for the fact that it was so heartbreaking. And while other stories have left me wondering why a Breed doesn’t immediately experience the mating hormone, Rule Breaker, gives readers a unique and interesting explanation for his situation. Overall, the pair’s interactions, dialogue, and actions were refreshingly straight forward, making for an engrossing read.
This is a longish story, and while much of the second half is filled with hot smex scenes, there is a LOT going on. The story puts to rest (I think) the Amber storyline, but I believe there is still much that can/may occur at the Navajo Nation. However, that could all change with the next story. Unfortunately, there were parts of the story where I was completely confused as to who knew what and who did what. I felt that during these moments, the writing was a bit too vague for my liking. However, unlike with previous books, I was able to get past the confusion because the overall story was exciting.
In the end, Rule Breaker is a pretty good story filled with intense emotional interactions. Whether between Rule and Gypsy, their own self-reflection, or Gypsy and her family, the conflict felt tight and sincere. I am pleased that the story made significant headway in one of the extended story arcs, but it was a bit long and at times cryptic and vague. The sex scenes were on par with those in the past books, but honestly, they seemed to get a bit lengthy and repetitive for me. However, the overall romance and storyline were entertaining and satisfying for this longtime fan.
I have been a fan of the Breed series for years and have religiously read the books the day they are released. But I do have to say I was pretty disappointed in this one.
The whole "Amber" arc has been going on for a while now...too long in this readers opinion. I was glad to think it was going to be wrapped up in this novel. Along with "Amber" we have been reading about the deadly Breed "Gideon" again for more than a few books and again I was hoping his story line would be wrapped up in this novel. I sorta got my wish but well...not really. This novel was confusing, frustrating and a struggle to read. I usually will finish a Breed novel off in a day maybe a day and a half because I get so involved in the characters and what is happening that I don't want to put it down. This novel took me over 3 days to read and the first 3/4 of the book was hard reading. There was soooo many plot lines going on that I would get confused. I know they were all tangled up with each other but how it was written was what I call "noisy" it was like there was a cacophony of music going on and you only wanted to listen to the base line. I would actually get tired keeping everything untangled that I would put the book down and walk away.
The Cassie storyline popped up for a second in this novel as well. I like Cassie but if this storyline keeps dragging on I"m going to go into the "don't care" place where I was with Amber. I hope she wrapped that up soon.
About the characters: I have always liked Rule he was hard core and over the top Breed who kept mainly to himself or his brother but even he got all complicated in this novel with his ancestry and psi links etc. Gypsy Rum...well..she just kinda bugged me...I know she was traumatized at a young age..and that vengeance was her thing...but I saw such a lack of maturity and with her after hour exploits no real personality which being the party girl and making all those friends I would would have thought there would be more to her. I guess I just found her shallow and selfish. It really was all about her..in her little world. I would say she is the least favorite of all the Breed "heroines".
Now for the positive. I loved seeing Ashley again and can't wait until we get to read her story. I adore Dane and again..would like to see him get his own story and stop pineing over that redhead that belongs to someone else. I absolutely adore Gideon..and I want his story. Yes I'm tired of the hints and yes, we got more about him this book but I want it told and over.
The last 1/4 of the book was fantastic and that is what pulled the whole book out of the 2 star zone for me and pumped it up to the 2.75 which is what I am awarding it. If the whole book was written like the last quarter it would have been a 5 star read. The confusion was over and we were getting somewhere with all the multiple story lines. However the loose ends were not completely tied up and I get the feeling that we will be reading more in the Amber story in coming books. I just hope they are better written than this one and less complicated for the reader to follow.

When a series goes 29 books you believe that it has gone through several incarnations. What makes Lora Leigh's Breeds different is the fact that aside from some minor tangents along the way, this series has remained true to it's beginnings.
That has to make it hard for an author. How to make it unique and fresh but remain true to the very beginning. In my humble opinion, Ms. Leigh does a stellar job. Yes, she is constantly adding in new characters and yes there are some bumps in the road but this series remains true. It's about allowing the "breeds" to live in society as free individuals. Hard to do when you have an insane aspect of society trying to recapture you or destroy you.. and you have another aspect of society trying to just destroy you.
These breeds just want to remain free and live their lives.. just like you and me, no more no less. Rule Breaker tells the story of, you guessed it Rule Breaker (a name he gave himself).
Rule has been an enforcer for Jonas from almost the beginning. Having escaped his lab with one remaining brother, Rule swears he is not going to search for his mate. Not going to be in a position where he can not protect those he love. Because he is adamant, Rule has managed to avoid any cases where a mate might be around. Except he has already me his mate.. a long time ago. And his beast, his lion, is a rather smart one and manages to hide this fact from Rule until he is ready to accept it.
Gypsy McQuade just wanted her parents to love her.. she wanted their attention. She was blessed with an older brother who adored her but when he seemed to turn against her, Gypsy snuck out of the house to attend a local party. Only to be captured and used as bait to get to her brother. At fifteen she had to not only watch him die but watch her parents turn away from her because he had died. Alone and angry, Gypsy dedicated the decade to serving his cause. All the while looking like the quintessential party girl. Never good enough for her parents but knowing she at least has a cause.
When Rule and Gypsy meet, sparks fly and poor Gypsy doesn't know how to handle things. And Rule ? He is wildly attracted but since there are no mating symptoms he feels safe. There has been a lot of noise about this book. Some people absolutely LOATHED it. Feeling it didn't live up to it's promise. While others loved it.. enjoying the fact that Ms. Leigh went back to the beginning.
For me, it was a dynamic book with unique characters who have to learn to work together to do what was best for both of their peoples. There was a lot going on behind the scenes and Ms. Leigh slowly wrapped them into the story. Guaranteeing my attention for future books.
I liked Rule but I especially enjoyed the fact that his lion was so much smarter than he was. Proving that both Rule and his lion believe it's ok to break the rules..
2.5 disappointed stars and a huge thank goodness that is over.
So now that I have chewed my way through Rule Breaker (and it was very tough in places) I am pissed that I wasted so much of my time reading a book that was boring me to tears until about 70%. On the other hand FINALLY there was some progression to the Amber story arc; it is only been dragging on for about 7 or so books. While I would sum up Rule Breaker as boring with soap opera-like ridiculous characters (like Greta - she came across as seriously mentally challenged and I don't think that was LL's intention), but I am married to this series now at #29 so I imagine I will be reading them to the end. I desperately want to read about Gideon, Dane, Cassie etc...so I will hang in there and hope their stories aren't boring BS.
Bitching aside I liked seeing lots of past characters. That was the highlight of this book for me.
Excellent! From the beginning to the end was a non-stop roller coaster of emotions and triumphs. I'm very satisfied with this book. A lot of questions has been answered. The bond between the Lion and Rule was very entertaining to see, how different personality they both seem to have and how the Lion took over Rule's mind and been watching over Gypsy all this time and going behind Jonas's back was amazing! And what Gypsy went through losing her brother was heartbreaking. The deceit and the carefully manipulations of Dane and Jonas was INTERESTING! A LOT has happened in this book (some parts I'm still confused at) but in time, it'll be cleared. The twists and turns of this story was unexpectied. I'm happy Amber is finally going to recover (gosh, she is so damn cute!) And I love Rule Breaker and Gypsy together, it's a good match. I'm very happy with this book and cannot wait to find out who is next to read! Hopefully Dane!
Come on, guys, you know what you'll get after 29 stories :) no sense getting pissed because it's same old, same old. It's romance, so yes, it is a story of boy meets girl, they fight the love, the heat prevents them from getting away. :) The overall plot is what makes these books interesting, in it we finally see someone else managing Jonas, a resolution to the Amber and the Navajo Affair.
I could have done without the too many steamy sex scenes, the book would have been tighter and maybe better. We see also new characters and plenty of the old ones. I loved this.
It was fine. More of the same it felt like, lots of plot threads, sooooo many different characters that I had a hard time recalling who they were and how they were connected. More Amber drama, very little Cassie and at this point in the series (29 books in, omg) her's is really the only book I'm remotely curious about.
Twenty-ninth in the Breeds (and sixteenth in the Feline Breeds subseries) paranormal romance series and revolving around men and women who were genetically manipulated to be faster, stronger, more dangerous. The couple focus is on Rule Breaker and Gypsy McQuade and is set in New Mexico.
Be warned, this story is incredibly confusing if you haven’t recently read previous installments.
My Take The theme is salvation, and Leigh starts with a prologue of a tease that introduces the story nine years before, setting up the guilt, the remorse, the need to atone.
I’ve enjoyed the Breeds series in the past, but these days Leigh seems to be making it so much more complicated. So much so, that I think she’s getting confused. The number of exchanges in Rule Breaker that had me re-reading and re-reading, going back several pages to try and figure out what’s going on. That still didn’t help until I read much farther in, sometimes leaving me more confused and other times clearing things up. I suspect that Leigh's use of third-person multiple point-of-view is what helps make this all so confusing, with so many characters having their own agendas.
There are so many loose ends in this. Actions and events that Leigh doesn’t connect or provide a reason for.
It does crack me up that Rule’s animal side is hiding from him, until it will be too late for him to run from his mate, but damn, Leigh does go on and on and on about his fears about having a mate. As for Dane, his part in all this continues to evolve, but it’s still hidden behind so much.
The Story Lion Breed Rule Breaker had just a few rules he will not break. Not for anything. Not for anyone, including Jonas Wyatt. Only his animal side has his own ideas.
What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the Breeds when Jonas learns she's possibly been working against them.
The Characters Gypsy Rum McQuade has always felt the lack of her parents’ love, love only provided by Mark, her brother who had been one of Jonas’ informants. Hansel and Greta McQuade are her parents. Kandy Sweet McQuade is the younger sister who now runs her maternal grandparents’/parents’?? candy store, but it’s not her dream.
Theadora Lacey, an assistant DA in Window Rock, had been Mark’s fiancée. Now she’s Jason’s wife. Jason Harte had been Mark’s best friend and now runs the personal image building business, McQuade Image Consulting, Mark had started. Milly is a tramp of a cousin.
Enforcer Rule Breaker is now the investigative commander of the Bureau of Breed Affairs and has no intention of finding his mate. Enforcer Lawe Justice is Rule’s brother and Jonas’ right-hand man; Diane Broen, Rachel’s sister, is his mate (Lawe's Justice, 26). Morningstar Martinez had been his and Lawe's mother. Thor Thorsson is said to be an ex-mercenary who now works as a Breed Enforcer.
The Breeds are… …men and women who were genetically altered in a horrendous experiment with most of their genetics a direct tie to the Navajo. Jonas Wyatt, a Lion Breed who can see the dead, is also known as the "Mate Matcher" and is the director of the Bureau of Breed Affairs, determined that the Breeds will survive. Amber is his deathly ill daughter, injected with a deadly serum seven months ago. Rachel Broen is Jonas’ mate (Lion's Heat, 21).
Dane Vanderale is Jonas’ half-brother and a hybrid Breed. The first Leo is Dane’s and Jonas' father. Rhys “Ryan” Desalvo is Dane’s friend and sometime bodyguard.
I think Rhyzan Brannigan is the new assistant director of the bureau. Tanner Reynolds and his wife, Scheme, are the PR team that pressured the governments to pay for what their leaders had done (Tanner’s Scheme, 9). Moira O’Malley is recently out of the labs. Ely is the Breeds’ doctor.
The lions Callan Lyons is the Pride leader married to Merinus (Tempting the Beast (Feline Breeds, 1), 1). Dawn Lawrence, a cougar, is Callan’s sister and married to Seth (Dawn's Awakening, 14). Flint McCain and Mercury Warrant (Mercury's War, 16) are more Lion Breeds. Dr. Morrey is the Lion Breed physiologist. And Jonas’ medical spy. Cassa and Cabal St. Laurents (he's a Lion Breed; Bengal's Heart, 19) are assets to the Breeds.
The Bengals Judd and the feral Gideon Cross are both Bengals, and Gideon is determined to hunt Judd down.
The wolves have… …several packs. Dash Sinclair, who is married to Elizabeth (Elizabeth’s Wolf, 3), is one of the alphas and are Cassie Sinclair’s parents. (She's a tri-Breed.) Wolfe Gunnar is another alpha, the Lupine of the Wolf packs, and married to Hope (Primal Heat: "Wolfe’s Hope" (Wolf Breeds, 1), 10). Cole Dagger is another of the Wolves.
Lobo Reever, a Wolf Breed, owns a ranch in New Mexico (Enthralled: "The Devil's Due", 28). Graeme, a Breed, works for him and loves to torture. Khileen, Gypsy’s best friend nine years ago, is his stepdaughter. Tiberian, Lobo's younger brother, left the ranch to chase down a traitor.
The Delgado pack are… …Coyotes friendly to the Breeds. Del Rey Delgado is the coye of the pack and one of the strongest pack leaders (Coyote's Mate, 18). Ashley and Emma Truing and Sharone are friends with Gypsy. Dog a South African Breed, is one of the most dangerous Coyotes. Mutt, Mongrel, and Loki (he seems to be interested in Kandy Sweet McQuade) are some of his men. Loki's brother, Farce, is one of the Council’s best trackers and assassins.
Lance Jacobs is married to the woman Dog should have mated, Harmony Lancaster, Jonas’ estranged sister whom Jonas was forced to turn on in the labs (Harmony’s Way, 8).
Breed Law governs any and all contracts and endeavors anyone has with a Breed or their affiliates. Self Warrant is an aspect of Breed Law that a Breed can use one time to protect his mate, but it has dire repercussions. Mating Heat takes over the senses, causes you to lose all control. Feral fever is the last stage of Breed insanity.
The Navajo Nation Ray Running Wolf Martinez is the chief of the nation; Maria is his wife. Claire Martinez is their daughter. Shay Anderson is Ray’s aide and a friend of Gypsy’s. Terran Martinez is Ray’s younger brother and his father’s legal advisor; Isabelle (Malachi’s mate) and Chelsea are Terran’s daughters. Orrin Martinez is their father; their mother, Aliva had died of grief. Morningstar Martinez had been one of Orrin’s daughters, who suffered a horrible death, risked by Elder, a Coyote guard in the labs. Audi Johnson is head of security for the Navajo Nation; Jane is his wife while Liza is their daughter (mated to Stygian Black, Stygian's Honor, 27).
The Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Offices are… …led by Commander Cullen Maverick.
The Unknown are… …six Navajo warriors who are part of the ritual. In the past they have hidden, and hidden well, Breed escapees. Whisper is a contact for (or with) the Unknown.
The Genetics Council was/is… …an undercover organization of businessmen, world leaders, and scientists who have been operating for the past 100 years, manipulating the genes of humans to create a world army. No act is too vile for them. Grody, a Coyote, was one of Gypsy’s abductors.
Brandenmore Research is/was… …one of the labs under the Genetics Council, and it created the serum used by Phillip Brandenmore.
Simon Quartres is an independent contractor who frequently works for the Breeds. Connie is Greta’s favorite beautician. James Herndon is a cowboy contact who had been friends with Mark. Slim is one of the customers at Slap Happy, a bar and a useful source of rumors and gossip. Kenny C is the bartender. Caine’s is an underground club.
The Cover and Title The cover is a deep golden orange with verdigris showing through in splotches. I’d like to paint a wall like this. It’s a nicely muscled Rule on the cover in a ribbed hoodie open over that gorgeous chest, jeans hanging low on his hips, thumbs in pockets. His head disappears into the faux finish as do his legs and his lion persona on the left, behind him. His lion melds beautifully with the background, leaving his mouth, nose, and eyes staring out at us. The author’s name is large and at the top in an embossed warm silver while the title is in a more scripted embossed silver spanning lion and man at the bottom. The series information is tiny and in white between the words of the title.
The title is where the focus is, on the man Rule Breaker.
Rule Breaker. Is it really # 29 ? Wow! Lora Leigh did an outstanding job on this one. Rule Breaker is my favorite Breed story since Lion's Heat. It made me cry ! That is an accomplishment. I loved it!
So No Spoilers Here! My full review will be posted @ Night Owl Reviews.
I just wanted to say that the amazing Lora Leigh brought her A Game with this one, folks. Breed Fans : Hold on to something cause you're gonna be blown away by Rule Breaker.
I AM DONE WITH THIS TORTUROUS HORROR SHOW OF A NOVEL
Not only is the female main characters name a slur, but the "breeds" are all genetically modified people from the effing NAVAJO NATION so they're all INDIGENOUS PEOPLE that were not just experimented on and tortured but also CREATED IN LABS
This was awful, I hated every single second, and wouldn't have included it on Goodreads but I'll be damned if I'm not going to count this towards my reading goal lol MY PAIN MUST COUNT FOR SOMETHING
Rating: -5000000/5 stars Spice level: six puke buckets out of four
Rule Breaker is one of the most trusted commanders under Jonas. Rule has been more insistent on the others against a mate. That is the last thing he needs or wants. Even though the breed side of himself desires a mate, the human part is so insistent on a mate that Rule is determined to never let Jonas manipulate him as he has done with many other. But he may not have much of a choice against this certain woman that calls out to him body and soul. Gypsy McQuade never felt love or acceptance from her parents. Her brother was her best friend and parental figure. At fifteen some rogues go after her brother for helping the breeds secretly, she is caught up in it, and ends up raped before they murder her beloved brother right in front of her. Then she is rescued just not in time to save the only person who has ever cared about her. It has taken nine years, but Gypsy has a decent life of sorts. The loss of her brother still cuts deeply, and even though on the outside she appears to be a "party girl" on the inside she is on a mission, to help where she can just as her brother did. Jonas suspects that she is a double agent, even knowing that she is Rule's mate. So he sends Rule in to discover her true purpose. Rule is starting to have some fierce feelings for Gypsy, but he isn't feeling the normal symptoms of a breed in close proximity to its mate, so he doesn't believe they have a future. But soon Gypsy and Rule will have to work together, because there is a traitor, one they least expect for betrayal and the one that has all the answers for Gypsy to come to terms with her brothers death and have a future with Rule.
Rule Breaker is the 29th installment of this breeds series, and I have been following the series since Coyote Mate, which was the first book to draw me into this intense world of passion and suspense. Rule we have seen for quite some time, and I have loved him. He is so alpha at times, stubborn and out to have his own way no matter what. In this story we see a deeper side to Rule, and even from the beginning we see how a part of him has always sheltered Gypsy since she was attacked. It was very interesting seeing how he interacted with Gypsy. This book definitely felt a bit different from the others, it definitely has quite a bit of a mystery story mixed in with the sensual plot we have going here. For the first half of the story Rule and Gypsy flirt quite a bit, and we see a almost superficial beginning to their courtship. It isn't until about halfway that I felt their relationship started to feel more real to me. There is quite a bit of emotional drama in this story, and the aftereffects will shock the reader. I was stunned how many emotional reaction I got from this story which isn't normal for this author. But it was basically driven by emotion, and I felt like it had more depth than some of the other books in the series.
There is quite a bit going on with Gypsy, and more than you realize when you start. At first we don't know what Gypsy's intentions are, but as you progress further into the story, we see how the plot plummets from superficial parties and flirtation, to a more riveting tale that will blow you away. An invigorating tale of deep emotion, strong characters, steady plot, and a story to sweep you away into a world of adventure and sensuality!! UNFORGETTABLE!!
Rule Breaker is the 29th book in the Breed series by Lora Leigh. Our feature couple is Rule, a lion breed and Gypsy a human. The story starts off very sad, we witness Gypsy the night her brother is murdered. For Gypsy her brother feels like the only family she really has and losing him almost breaks her. Gypsy is consumed with guilt and she takes up her brother mission to find purpose. Unfortunately she becomes emotionally suspended in time, closing off all of her emotions, which was rather heart breaking. Meanwhile Rule is determined to never mate and he is sure that Gypsy is nothing more than sexual attraction. As you can imagine the road to being mated was full of bumps.
I liked Gypsy a lot! I think the beginning of the story is what endeared her to me, I think it was easy to identify why she was making choices and it was so easy to root for her. Quickly she became one of my favorite heroines in the Breed series; not only is she smart and resourceful but she has a lot of guts. Then there are times when we can see she is incredibly lonely and alone, which for me made it all the better when she becomes helpless in Rule’s arms. It is like weather she wants to or not she is feeling emotions and it was cute how she would fight it. Meanwhile Rule had his moments of idiocy but they really were not that bad compared to other Breeds. This was a cute couple and you can see how well they fit together.
In this book we get to see a good deal of espionage and breed manipulation. Once nice thing is we get some resolution into Amber. Sadly that was a bit of a letdown because I felt like it should not have taken 8 books for all these scheming people to figure it out. There were other minor plots that bogged down the story line and made the plot a bit convoluted and overly complex. To keep them all going we there was a growing cast of characters at times I felt like I needed some kind of appendix just to keep them all straight. At times this made the book a bit challenging.
Normally I read Breed books but this one I listened to on audio. Honestly the narrator just did not work for me, not so much because she was bad but her voice did not fit the story, I think I would have preferred a male reader. Hearing a woman say things like ‘his cock was throbbing’ or ‘ she was indeed wet the scent of her sweet juices…’ just took me out of the story. It did not even sound like good bed room talk you know with husky sounding voices instead it sounds like someone making fun of Captain Kirk in Star Trek you know how he has those dramatic pauses. I also did not think she had good character distinction it just sounded like she had a frog in her throat.
At the end of the day I am left with trying to tease out if my issues with the book are because of the story or because of the narrator. I am sure the romance part of the story worked for me. I am also sure some of the espionage stuff could have been left out. The multiple plots with Dane and Jonas I am not sure if was overly complicated because I was listening and not reading. In the end it was still a solid story and I am hoping we get Cassie and Dogs story next then maybe Dane’s I wonder who his mate will be?

Rule Breaker is the latest instalment in the popular Breeds series by Lora Leigh. Often times with long running series, the story gets stale and it is difficult to remain interested. That is not the case with this series. This book did a lot to move the overall arc forward, while giving us a satisfying, steamy hot couple.
Gypsy Rum McQuade is a woman on a mission to atone for a sin that was never really hers. Believing she was at fault for the death of her brother and hero, Gypsy keeps emotional and physical distance between her and everyone in her life. On the surface, she is a party girl who lives a flirty, carefree life. She works at the family image consulting business, helps out at the family bakery and answers phones for Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Offices. Dig a little deeper and you find that Gypsy has been working secret missions gathering information for the Unknown. Thought to be a fairy tale or myth, the Unknown is said to consist of six warriors who are chosen to protect what is most important to the Navajo people.
Rule Breaker is one of Jonas’ most trusted enforcers who is set to become the Division Director in Window Rock. After he and his brother Lawe Justice witnessed the horrific death of their mother and her mate, Rule has sworn to never take a mate. He goes to the extent of adding in a clause to his work contract allowing him to run should he ever start to feel mating heat. Rule’s lion recognizes its mate immediately, but knowing the man will run, it bides its time. With danger all around Gypsy, the lion is determined to protect its mate, while the man fights for the woman he loves.
Rule Breaker was a fast paced story that brought us resolutions to some situations, a few answers to questions and of course some big cliff hangers. There are still so many characters that haven’t had their own stories and rather than getting bored and wanting a new series, I cannot wait for each breed book. Ms. Leigh ended this book on a perfect note that will have you anxiously checking her website to see when the next one is coming.
I loved Gypsy and I really enjoyed seeing that softer side of Jonas outside of his mate and his child. Rule’s determination to not take a mate was completely understandable and watching him struggle with the subconscious knowledge that his lion had claimed Gypsy, made for a great story. It was easy to figure out who the person was that betrayed Gypsy’s brother, but that did not lessen the enjoyment of the book for me. As usual for a Lora Leigh book, the sex was smoking hot.
One thing that stood out that I really enjoyed about the book was that the primary focus wasn’t on the mating heat and the effect of the heat on the couple. Yes it was there, but in some of the books the overall storyline took a back seat to the heat and in this one I thought they were balanced perfectly. The mate trope is one that I love so I don’t get tired of that, but there is a lot going on with the Breeds and I was happy that the stories moved forward.
Overall a great addition to the Breeds series. Cannot wait for the next one!
