In 1974, the U.S. Marines knew that if the Corps was to survive the post Viet Nam anti-military political climate, it had to redefine and broaden its mission, and the newly created Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) needed the Corps’ combat experience and manpower to extend its reach beyond the shores of the United States to get at suppliers and manufacturers of illegal drugs. Out of that synergism a young Marine lieutenant led a select group of Marines into the jungles of Colombia to destroy a cartel drug factory, but their success led to a second mission to rescue an American family kidnapped by cartel thugs.
