Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst, discover The Reluctant Flirt…

Just one night…
After discovering her husband’s affair, Sierra Lourde flees to New York City for a little damage control—and a lot of wine. A tipsy night in a bar with a charming stranger seems like the perfect way to forget her troubles. No names, no promises, just one night to escape reality and regain her confidence. The next morning, mortified by her vulnerability, she flees without looking back. But who needs closure, right?

But one night changes everything…
Sierra has reinvented herself as the proud owner of Flirt, a trendy boutique in the Outer Banks. Life is good—until Kane Masterson, the man she left behind, walks back into town. And of course, he’s now the developer whose big new project threatens to bulldoze her beloved shop. Kane needs this deal to save his career (and his brother), but Sierra’s not about to let him demolish her hard-won success.
With sparks flying, sarcastic jabs turning into lingering looks, and a family wedding forcing them into close quarters, Sierra and Kane find themselves tangled in a battle of wills—and hearts. But now he has to choose: reclaim his career or risk everything for a second chance with the one woman he can’t forget.

Small town romance is a great trope, and the story starts in New York City with an explosive connection that follows up four years later into a fiery connection.

I have to say once again, in some of these romance novels, I’m tending to lean more into loving the guy more than the girl. While I understand a lot of hesitation

I love it when the guy is all in and isn’t afraid to admit it. Breaking down the barriers is a lot of this book. He was constantly on the chase, trying to convince her that what they had was real.

Blending in with other characters brings that Outer Banks vacation town vibe. They’re all interesting and fun characters, and the author even set it up for another potential romance – maybe another book to come??

Probst is amazing when it comes to setting up those hot romance vibes. The electricity and the intense feelings are all there. It’s just breaking through the ice to make that final connection, but he’s diligent. I was cheering him on all the way through!

I enjoyed the overall story, but she tended to annoy me with her overall lack of trust in herself and him. The third quarter demo scene was drama-filled and crushed their growth. That was sad and unnecessary on her part, I also feel that the author took it a bit beyond where it needed to go or needed to be.

We got the HEA, but I wanted more from it, but after the demo scene, it wasn’t everything I expected. All in all, The Reluctant Flirt by Jennifer Probst is sweet, hot, and funny in many places. Great read for your summer beach vibes!

Sierra + Kane

Sierra is finally finding herself again after her divorce. She's happy with her boutique in the Outer Banks. She loves that her sister is near with her fiancé and if she sometimes dreams about that one-night stand four years ago - who cares. It was amazing, but it was a one time thing. They didn't even exchange names - and she'll never see him again.
But of course he's already living in town too. He's the guy her sister wants to set her up with - Brick's bestie from New York. And he's also the guy who will fight with everthing he has to win back the one who got away four years ago - even if it means being killed by her new rescue monster cat.

Let the fun times begin...

That was adorable.

Beautiful location and an amazing cast of people and ...cat.
I really want to move there!

The story was so cute.
A second chancy thing with two people thinking the other didn't feel as much as they did back then. Ugh. Just talk guys!
I loved reading this. I loved watching Kane fight his way to his happy end with Sierra - adorable! And funny and a bit heartbreaking and just sweet.
I wouldn't mind getting a TV series about this town one day!

THE RELUCTANT FLIRT was an adorable 2nd chance-y love story. Funny, sweet, sexy, small-towny, a bit heartbreaking - just beautiful. Read it!

Book Title: The Reluctant Flirt (Outer Banks #2)
Author(s): Jennifer Probst
Publisher(s): Blue Box Press
Available on KU? 🙅🏼‍♀️
Audiobook? 🙅🏼‍♀️

🍿 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴: I loved the first book in the Outer Banks series (Book of the Month) and was very anxious to read The Reluctant Flirt. My memory isn’t great, so I couldn’t really remember what had happened with Aspen and Brick, but thankfully, Jennifer Probst did an excellent job sprinkling little reminders throughout this installment and I didn’t feel lost.

🤩 𝚃͏𝚑͏𝚎͏ 𝙱͏𝚎͏𝚜͏𝚝͏ 𝙱͏𝚒͏𝚝͏𝚜͏: I always thoroughly enjoy Probst’s characters, and it was so fun getting to know Sierra (Aspen’s sister) and Kane on a deeper level. Their attraction was white hot and burned bright through the whole book, and we got plenty of open door 🌶️ scenes. The inclusion of Montgomery the cat is what really did it for me though, and I can’t even tell you how many times I teared up all because of the scenes with that precious cat and Sierra. The small-town romance vibe was on point, and the location came alive along with all of the characters.

💭 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴: I really enjoyed the pacing of The Reluctant Flirt and the way our MC’s story started and wrapped up. I was able to get an extended epilogue which was a huge bonus, and if you can get it, you should definitely read it! It gave me a little something extra and left me with a big smile on my face. I have a good idea of who this series will focus on next, and I can’t wait!

I enjoyed this book and it was perfect for the long weekend. The perfect amount of spice, sparks and witty banner made this one so enjoyable.
Sierra is going through a difficult time and ends up having a one night stand with a charming stranger. No rules, promises or names. He makes an impression but Sierra and he set the boundaries.
She is now in the Outer Banks and runs a boutique called Flirt. She is doing well and get s the shock of a lifetime when she runs into her one night stand, Kane! She has no idea what brought Kane to her town, but she will discover he might have ulterior motives, but their chemistry is strong.

Flirty, heartfelt, and full of charm

The Reluctant Flirt was such a fun, feel-good read! Sierra and Kane’s romance had the perfect blend of chemistry, emotional depth, and playful tension. I loved watching their connection grow—both characters had layers, and their story felt warm, real, and satisfying.

Even though this is the second book in the series, it reads perfectly as a standalone. That said, the tie-ins from The Book of the Month were a great bonus if you’ve read the first one—familiar faces and subtle callbacks made it even more enjoyable.

The side characters truly brought this story to life. Duncan didn’t get a lot of page time, but he was easily one of my favorites—every scene he was in stood out. And Montgomery? Absolutely hilarious and full of personality. He added such a fun and unexpected spark to the story.

This is everything I love about Jennifer Probst—great banter, heartfelt moments, and characters you want to spend more time with. A cozy, romantic win!

Thank you NetGalley and Blue Box Press Publishing for my DRC!

A story of second chances, self-worth, and the kind of love that heals.

Reading The Reluctant Flirt felt like someone wrapped my heart in a warm, comforting hug—only to squeeze it tight, break it open, and then gently piece it back together again.

Sierra Lourde’s journey resonated so deeply with me. After discovering her husband's betrayal, she doesn’t just run—she reinvents. Her boutique, Flirt, is more than a business; it's a symbol of her strength, healing, and independence. Watching her rediscover her voice and rebuild her life was inspiring and genuinely emotional.

And then... Kane. Their chemistry was electric from the start, but what truly made this story unforgettable was the emotional depth and honesty of their second chance. This wasn’t about quick forgiveness or fairytale fixes—it was about accountability, vulnerability, and choosing love even when it feels scary.

Kane is flawed but full of heart, and the way he shows up—not just for Sierra, but for his own growth—made me fall for him as hard as she did. Their love felt earned, tender, and deeply real.

Jennifer Probst has written a romance that’s not just sexy and entertaining—it’s soul-stirring. She captures the messy, beautiful truth of what it means to heal, to risk again, and to believe in love after loss.

I laughed, I teared up, I highlighted so many lines. If you love stories where love is a journey, not a destination, The Reluctant Flirt will stay with you long after the last page.

After her parents passing followed by her divorce, Sierra was knocked off her pins. So a chance discussion in a bar leads to an incredible one-nighter where she tiptoed out in the morning without exchanging names. Four years passed, then she runs into him again. Often used trope, but handled well here. The characters are engaging and interesting, and I became quite invested in their story. Big thanks to @getredprbooks and @1001darknights_blueboxpress for sending me a copy.

The Reluctant Flirt is a heartfelt story about second chances and the beauty of found family. The message that everyone deserves a second chance really hit home for me. I loved the small town setting and the warm fuzzy found family vibes.

That said, I did get hung up on some of the dialogue — it didn’t always feel natural to me (a personal pet peeve that probably won’t bother most readers). And while the beginning and end moved at a great pace, the middle lagged a bit. I kept wanting her to finally go out with him already! Also the complete butchery of the message of our bookish romcom scripture (You’ve Got Mail) reeeeeally didn’t sit right with me.

Overall, this was a fun read. If you're a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, I think you’ll really enjoy this one!

4.5 Are you flirting with me? stars

If you have fallen in love with Probst's Sunshine Sisters Series, based on the shores of Cape May, NJ, you're going to want to dive into her Outer Banks series which takes place a bit south of Cape May, in the Outer Banks, NC, and get to know the small town there, because once you do, you won't want to leave. Each book can be read as a standalone, but since the first book is the sister of the FMC and the best friend of the MMC of this book, I recommend reading that one first, although it is not necessary.

Sierra and Kane have a very spicy ONS in New York, where no names were exchanged, and she did the dip before he woke the next morning. Several years have passed, and while they have each thought of the other, they have had no way of finding each other. That was, until a chance meeting in the Outer Banks when they were introduced by her sister and his best friend, who are now engaged. Well, hello awkwardness LOL.

3.75 ⭐️ rounded to 4 stars

This was a great, fast paced love story. If you were looking for a book that you could get through in one sitting, and this is the one for you.
Our FMC Sierra has a one night stand four years after her divorce. Another four years goes by and the mystery man that she was with appears back in her life. But they have a close connection that will keep them tied. Our MMC Kane has a tough background. After being in prison for a while, he is finally finding success in his new career.
Their worlds collide, but of course drama ensues and our couple has to figure out how to navigate their problems.

A little bit predictable. But definitely entertaining. Also this book is very spicy so keep that in mind.

Overall, a fun read!

Sierra Lourde is the definition of fierce. A woman who had to grow up way too fast, she’s always been the responsible one—taking care of her younger sister, Aspen, after their parents chose adventure over parenting…and ultimately left them behind for good. So when her marriage crashes and burns? Sierra doesn’t break—she reinvents.

Now she’s thriving with her boutique Flirt in the Outer Banks, living life on her terms. Until he shows up. The sexy one-night-stand she never forgot. No names. No expectations. Just one unforgettable night. And now he’s back—Kane Masterson, best friend of her sister’s fiancé and the new developer threatening to bulldoze her shop. Plot twist, anyone?

Kane has spent years carrying a quiet torch for the woman who ghosted him at sunrise. Now that fate’s thrown them back together? He’s not letting her slip away again—cat or no cat. (Yes, Montgomery the cat has very strong opinions about Kane, and he’s not afraid to show them.)
This story brings all the swoons, sass, and second-chance tension. Sierra’s independence makes her tough to crack, but Kane’s charm (and persistence) makes him impossible to ignore. Watching these two navigate heartbreak, healing, and hilarious feline interference made for such a satisfying read.

If you're in the mood for:
✨ Strong women reclaiming their lives
🐾 Cats with opinions
🔥 A slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers twist
Then The Reluctant Flirt should be your next must-read.

3.5⭐️ Overall, I enjoyed it. This is book #2 in a series and I liked this book better however it fell into some of the same situations where i felt the phrasing and terms were dated and made my eyes roll.

Sierra was an impressive woman but so much is made of her love of shoes that it felt like she was reduced to that.

Kane is so hot, he is literally causing a fuss throughout town.

The writing itself was fine. It was nice to have dual POV but it was in third person which was unique and not my favorite.

We have a FMC who’s been wronged in the past who has no time for love. And a MMC who has never opened up to love, to keep himself protected. They have a steamy one night stand and run into each other 4yrs later.

I saw the conflict a mile away. The resolution was a bit disappointing.

You may enjoy if you like small town romance, MMC who has it bad and won’t stop until he gets what he wants, FMC pretending she isn’t into it, secrets, miscommunication and sassy grumpy

Jennifer Probst's "The Reluctant Flirt," the second installment in her captivating Outer Banks series, weaves a complex tapestry of love, loss, and the courage to trust again. Following the success of "Book of the Month," Probst elevates her storytelling with a romance that refuses to take the easy path, instead confronting readers with the messy reality of competing loyalties and impossible choices.

The Heart of the Story: More Than Just a Reunion

Sierra Lourde's journey from broken woman to successful boutique owner forms the emotional backbone of this novel. After discovering her husband's infidelity, she fled to New York City for one night of anonymous comfort—a night that resulted in the most passionate encounter of her life with a stranger whose name she never learned. Four years later, Sierra has rebuilt herself completely, channeling her pain into Flirt, a trendy boutique that serves as both her livelihood and her sanctuary.

The cruel irony that Kane Masterson, the man from that transformative night, returns as the developer tasked with destroying everything she's built creates a conflict that transcends typical romantic obstacles. Probst doesn't simply reunite two people who shared chemistry; she forces them to confront fundamental questions about what love requires and what sacrifices are too great to make.

Character Development: Layered and Authentic
Sierra: The Reluctant Heart

Sierra emerges as a genuinely complex heroine whose reluctance stems not from manufactured drama but from authentic trauma. Probst skillfully reveals how losing her parents at a young age shaped Sierra's approach to love and security. Her relationship with her sister Aspen, while loving, carries the weight of premature responsibility and loss. The author's decision to make Sierra a successful businesswoman rather than a damsel in distress adds depth to the conflict—she has something real to lose.

The naming of her boutique "Flirt" after that one perfect night reveals the romantic soul beneath Sierra's protective exterior. This detail, woven throughout the narrative, demonstrates Probst's attention to emotional continuity and the ways past experiences shape our present choices.

Kane: The Driven Redeemer

Kane Masterson represents a more nuanced take on the alpha male archetype. His past mistakes—including jail time and the destruction of his previous career—aren't merely backstory decoration but active forces shaping his present decisions. His relationship with his troubled brother Derek adds layers to his character, explaining his drive to succeed while highlighting the personal cost of his ambitions.

Probst excels at making Kane's professional dilemma genuinely difficult. His need to succeed isn't born from greed but from a desire to prove his worth and protect those he loves. This makes his eventual choice between career and love feel earned rather than predetermined.

The Supporting Cast: More Than Window Dressing

The inclusion of Montgomery (Mo), Sierra's rescue cat, initially appears to be a simple cute addition but evolves into a surprisingly effective symbol of Sierra's capacity for healing and protection. Mo's acceptance of Kane becomes a subtle barometer for their relationship's progress.

Brooklyn and the supporting characters in the Outer Banks community feel authentic rather than merely functional. They provide texture to the setting without overwhelming the central romance. The connection to Aspen and Brick from the first book creates satisfying continuity for series readers while remaining accessible to newcomers.

Setting as Character: The Outer Banks Magic

Probst's portrayal of the Outer Banks transcends typical small-town romance settings. The wild horses, the coastal beauty, and the tight-knit community dynamics all contribute to a sense of place that feels lived-in rather than idealized. The contrast between Sierra's New York origins and her chosen Outer Banks home reflects her personal transformation journey.

The boutique itself becomes almost a character, representing Sierra's creativity, independence, and capacity for building something beautiful from devastation. Probst's descriptions of the carefully curated clothing and accessories reveal her understanding of retail as both business and art.

Writing Style: Probst's Confident Voice

Probst demonstrates her mastery of contemporary romance with prose that balances emotion and sensuality without veering into overwrought territory. Her dialogue crackles with authentic tension, particularly in the verbal sparring between Sierra and Kane. The author's use of shoe quotes to begin chapters initially feels gimmicky but ultimately reinforces themes about foundation, support, and the paths we choose to walk.

The pacing builds effectively, allowing the characters' internal conflicts to develop alongside their external challenges. Probst doesn't rush the emotional resolution, understanding that trust, once broken, requires time and consistent action to rebuild.

Thematic Depth: Beyond the Romance
The Cost of Dreams

The novel explores how pursuing our dreams sometimes forces us to hurt those we love. Kane's dilemma—choosing between career redemption and destroying Sierra's business—raises questions about compromise and sacrifice in relationships. Probst doesn't offer easy answers, acknowledging that love sometimes requires impossible choices.

Healing and Second Chances

Both protagonists carry wounds from their pasts, and their healing journey forms a parallel narrative to their romance. Sierra's fear of abandonment and Kane's desperate need to prove his worth create authentic barriers that can't be overcome with grand gestures alone.

Community and Belonging

The importance of chosen family emerges as a strong theme, particularly through Sierra's relationship with her boutique community and Kane's friendship with Brick. The novel suggests that healing happens not in isolation but through connection with others who choose to support us.

Areas for Improvement

While "The Reluctant Flirt" succeeds on many levels, some elements feel less developed. The resolution of Kane's professional crisis, while emotionally satisfying, relies somewhat on convenient timing. Additionally, some secondary character arcs could have been explored more fully to enhance the community atmosphere Probst works to create.

The "You've Got Mail" parallel, while clever, occasionally feels forced rather than organic to the story. However, this meta-fictional element may appeal to readers who enjoy romance novels that acknowledge their place within the genre's traditions.

Final Verdict: A Romance Worth Savoring

"The Reluctant Flirt" succeeds because Probst understands that the best romance novels aren't just about two people falling in love—they're about two people becoming worthy of the love they seek. Sierra and Kane's journey toward each other requires genuine growth and sacrifice, making their eventual happiness feel earned rather than inevitable.

While the novel works perfectly as a standalone read, it gains additional depth as part of the Outer Banks series. Probst has created a world readers will want to revisit, populated with characters who feel like friends worth following through their journeys toward love and healing.

This is contemporary romance at its finest—emotionally intelligent, genuinely romantic, and grounded in authentic human experience. Probst continues to prove why she remains one of the genre's most reliable and talented voices.

Reluctant flirt— one who is not intentionally flirting but is so good at it, it just comes naturally

This one starts out with a pivotal event that occurred separately for them a few years before— Sierra was getting married and Kane was making it big in NYC at his job. But then a few years later, stuff went wrong. Sierra’s husband cheats on her, and Kane gets screwed over by his mentor. Sierra and Kane meet in a bar and have a one night stand. That’s all it was going to be for her, but they connected on another level that Kane wanted more. However, they didn’t even share their names, and in the morning she was gone.
4 years later, he moves to her small town that coincidently is where his best friend resides. Said best friend is dating her sister. Once he notices her, he knows life has given him a second chance in more ways than one. He still harbors feelings for her since that night, but the sting of her divorce still hurts, and she’s not ready to get close to anyone again. He takes his time with her, showing that he’s not going anywhere, and slowly she thaws. However, a huge event happens that affects both of their jobs, and comes in between their relationship. This proves to be a test of their foundation and the building blocks needed to secure it. I think that moment also showcased the type of honesty needed in their relationship and how to view situations from the others perspective and not just logically. It also added a layer of depth to their relationship beyond just the physical, and that their willingness and necessity to move past this hurdle proved that there was more to their connection than just lust.

Straight to the point, I did not enjoy the book and reading about the characters, BUT, I do get the concept and I understand people who enjoyed it, as it was far more better than the first one in the series. And if there were more books in the series, I don’t think I’ll be reading them, I was pushing and forcing myself to finish the books and tried my best not to DNF.
Now what I hate most is the writing style, aside from the 3rd person, the writing itself felt off for me, and I hate how the author collides sex with love, I mean, okay, there are some characters that can’t divide sex from their emotions, I understand that, but MAKING it look like everyone feels like that is a no, maybe I got it wrong, but that’s how I just saw it.
Dialogues are bearable, but if I had the chance again, I would rather not pick up this book, it any other book by this author for that matter.
Maybe in a different mood of mine or time, I would’ve liked it, but alas, now’s ain’t the time and I prefer picking up other books than giving it another try.
I got lucky because this book was so short and managed to finish it in one day.

The Reluctant Flirt
A Novel Written By Jennifer Probst
Fiction - Romance
Published July 2025

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is Book 2 in the author’s Outer Banks Series. After reading the first book in the series, Book of the Month, I was excited to read this one. Both books are set in the beachy town of Corolla in the Outer Banks.

Sierra Lourde had a one night stand with a mystery man she met in a hotel bar in New York City. Four years later she still can’t forget about the man and their night together. She is shocked to find him living in the Outer Banks, and he is best friends with her sister’s fiancée.

Sierra is now the owner of a boutique in town called Flirt. The mystery man, Kane Masterson, is starting a new life in the Outer Banks. Both are pulled together by the same attraction they felt when they first met in NYC. Kane would like to forge a relationship with Sierra, but first he must win over her cat.

I liked the small town beach setting. I liked the author’s descriptive writing. I also liked the banter between Sierra and Kane.

Author Jennifer Probst writes books that are perfect vacation reads or that you would undoubtedly want to pack in your beach bag. The Reluctant Flirt gives all those summery feel-good emotions. Readers will follow Sierra, sister to Aspen from the previous book, Book of the Month, as she tries to get past her divorce. The guy she hooks up with, she figures, she won’t ever see again. But life doesn’t work out that way, and she does run into him several years later. And Kane has not forgotten her. The Reluctant Flirt is a “he falls first” story, and I loved that Kane had been thinking about Sierra for so long. Her aloofness towards him was refreshing to read, since the tables were turned in a way. And just like summer loves, there are spicy and heartfelt moments, which are tied with a tiny bit of drama, with both their businesses.

The Reluctant Flirt was a fun, quick summer romance read.

I’ve read and enjoyed Jennifer Probst’s books before, so I was surprised to find myself struggling with The Reluctant Flirt. The premise had potential, and I was excited going in—but I just couldn’t get into the writing this time around.

Something about the pacing and style didn’t click for me, and I found it hard to stay engaged with the story. I kept hoping I’d find my rhythm with it, especially since I’ve never had this issue with her writing before, but unfortunately, it never fully hooked me.

That said, I know every reader connects differently with every story. Just because this one didn’t land for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else—especially fans of her lighter, flirty romances.

Thank you for the eARC; all thoughts are my own!

📖 Book Review 📖 It was only supposed to be one night. No names, no strings attached. But four years later, far from Manhattan, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina they meet again. When Kane arrives in OBX with nothing left to his name, the only person he knows is his best friend, Brick (who just happens to be dating the sister of that elusive one night stand.) Can that chemistry sustain beyond just one night for Kane and Sierra? The Reluctant Flirt is a heartfelt beach read about second chances in life that unfolds in the most unexpected ways.

While The Reluctant Flirt is book two in this series and readers will enjoy a reunion with familiar faces from the first book, this one stands alone beautifully.

Sierra wasn't in New York to flirt with anyone, just drowning her sorrows after her divorce became final. But after a stranger in the bar saves her, they get to talking, then she's reluctantly flirting back, and one thing led to another. She agreed to one night, no names, and the next morning she left without saying goodbye.
Now, Kane is forced to start over after his real estate partner framed him. He's in the Outer Banks visiting his best friend Brick and decides to stay for a bit. And when they're out one night, he finds out that the woman he never forgot is the sister of Brick's girlfriend... and she runs again! He knows that night was a lot more than a hookup, and he's not giving up until she admits it too.
This book was good, if a bit predictable. I thought Sierra's excuses for continuing to push Kane away were kind of flimsy, but I appreciated his dedication. He definitely falls first and is just waiting for her (and her cat) to give in. I did like the small town vibe of the book and revisiting the characters from the first book. And the guys advice to Kane in the end comparing it to a popular romcom with an arguably bad Hollywood HEA was hilarious.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've been dying for Sierra and Kane's story since the teaser in Book of the Month! It was exactly what I was hoping for!! One night stand with no names then they meet again 4 years later and it's a little bit of enemies to lovers. He falls first and has to win her back. The tension was so good! The third act break up is predictable but still worth the read. Now I want a book for Marco and Mal!!

The Reluctant Flirt is the perfect summer beach read. As promised, it’s flirty, fun, and set in a quintessential beach town full of nosy neighbors and well meaning do-gooders. Kane and Sierra’s story is a bit of a sideways second chance romance, where a past (anonymous) big city one stand turns into something more meaningful, in the new lives that they have chosen for themselves, away from the hustle and heartbreak of their former situations. Fast paced and romantic, this read was the perfect escape! Thanks to NetGalley and Blue Box Press for my gifted ARC.

A few lines I liked:

You can keep running for now. Until I decide to catch you.

Kane grit out in a whisper, "That's not a cat. It's a monster."

He'd been cock blocked by a cat. 😂

🐯 This part made me laugh so hard, I was in tears 🐯

"I'm surprised at you. I thought you liked animals."

"Domesticated, cute, furry animals. Brick's got a rat creature masquerading as a dog, and now you have a pet who looks like the orange gorilla from Jungle Book."

received this as an arc from netgalley for an honest review

This was a great romance book, I'd say it even swung towards second chance romance.

Sierra goes through a divorce and has a one night stand that rocked her world but it also scared the hell out of her so she dipped and ran come morning time, fast forward 4 years and suddenly this sensational man is in her small town. How can she avoid him when all he wants to do is prove to her he is trustworthy and to give their relationship a chance.

I loved seeing Sierra push down her walls and realise that she deserves passionate and all-consuming love!
Kane, well. What a guy, someone who truly listens and will do anything to better themselves for someone they love. What more could you ask for in an mmc? Oh yeah, he is really hot!!

Also, shout out to Montgomery. What a great cat

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Have you ever started a book, and really wanted to like it? That was how I felt with this one. The cover was striking. The plot sounded interesting. Everything was lining up for a good romance it seemed. Then it didn't. It fell flat, and never really picked itself back up.

Spoilers possible ahead**

Sierra and Kane had a wild, no names, one-night-stand four years ago. Their meeting prior to going to his room was all by chance. The dialogue between them was fun, and you were rooting for them, as it seemed they really hit it off. However, Sierra slips out before Kane wakes up, and they don't see each other until fate throws them together four years later.

When Sierra "meets" Kane again, she finds out he is the best friend of her sister's fiance. She completely freaks out, and leaves. Kane follows her, and tells her he's going to "catch her". Basically, he's going to force this relationship regardless of her feelings. I know it's meant to be romantic, but it reads as creepy.

The first half of the book, Sierra avoids him as much as possible, and tries to say no to his constant push for her. By the middle of the novel, she agrees with him that they definitely fell in love as strangers that first night, and they should give it a try. While Sierra is written to let us know she did have thoughts of Kane, I still wish there wouldn't have been the creepy aspect to it. The author could have worked around that in a much better way. Instead, it feels like Sierra wasn't actually given a choice, and was gaslit into her relationship with him in the end.

On top of everything, Kane notices Sierra's shoes all the time. He likes to tell us why she chose those specific shoes. It's giving serial killer vibes. I know he's into fashion the way she is, but maybe I've just read too much true crime in my life.

Overall, I am disappointed in this book. It had potential, but just didn't live up to it for me. 2/5 for what the plot could have been. 3.5/5 for spice.

Disclaimer: Thank you to Blue Box Press and BookFunnel for providing The Reluctant Flirt by Jennifer Probst for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Overall Impressions 😊

I wanted to love this book. As a sucker for romantic comedies, I was genuinely excited to follow Sierra and Kane as they collided again in a small town where everybody knows everything, four years after a one-night stand. The premise promised witty banter and charming small-town shenanigans as the characters tried to keep their reunion under wraps.

But unfortunately, The Reluctant Flirt leaned hard on dated references and early 2000s romance tropes, making it feel like a time capsule with a Wi-Fi signal. The insta love, the relentless shoe talk, the over-the-top side characters, and the protagonists' resistance to romance without a believable reason all combined into a frustrating experience. The entire plot could have been resolved with one honest conversation, and that made it tough to stay invested.

That said, the small-town charm came through loud and clear. I could practically feel the breeze off the porch as I read. But atmosphere alone wasn’t enough to elevate this above the hundreds of similar romantic comedies already out there.

Perfect For Fans Of… 🌟

My main gripe with this was that most references and the writing style were pretty dated. But if you enjoy Lucy Score, Elsie Silver, or Emily Henry, you'll probably enjoy this book. This novel has all the workings of a good second chance, small town romance and characters that you do try to root for. If you're especially invested in insta love and a relentless MMC, and can look past a healthy dose of miscommunication (or lack thereof), you'll have a great time. The writing style also reminded me of Judith McNaught's writing, with historical and emotional beats.

Characters 👥

The cast was fine. But that's kind of the issue, isn't it? There are so many romance books out there that fine just doesn't cut it anymore.

I wanted to like Sierra, someone who had to build her life from scratch. But her inner monologue, especially some of her more antiquated views about shopping and shoes, made her feel reduced to a cliché version of a "girl who wants to be girly and unapologetic about it." Don't get me wrong, I love that for her, but I didn't care for the way she was portrayed. She felt one-dimensional.

Same with Kane, the MMC with the mysterious past. He was devoted, somehow great at everything, and he wanted to chase the entire time. I liked reading about his POV and how devoted he was to Sierra, but how he got from point A to B was unclear and rushed. That being said, he had some good one-liners that did make me swoon.

Plot 🗺️

The story had all the cozy and wonderful makings of a small town romance. Funnily enough, it made me think of Emily Henry's Book Lovers, where city people fall in love in a small town and get into small town shenanigans. It felt like we were watching it from the other side of Naomi and Charlie's story from that book. I liked the beachy setting, the inevitable conflict between the characters, and Aspen and Brick's story, which was good comedic relief.

The story has everything you want and expect out of an early 2000s romcom, a neglected wife, a husband, and finally the right man to notice and take care of her. It's all there, but the story also makes this feel pretty dated.

Writing Style and Narration ✍️

The writing style is one of my biggest issues with this book and why I couldn't get past the dated impressions of it. There were some very unexpected and jarring phrases like "feminine power," and then lots of more modern terms kept getting dropped. "Vibes" was used quite a lot, and there were randomly sprinkled Taylor Swift references. It just felt like it was trying to sound young and hip, and instead came off as inauthentic.

I love dual POV, which this book has. Something is really exciting from the MMC's POV, but I was taken aback that it was in third person. This book also has flashbacks weaved in throughout, and I'm an enjoyer of the past braided into the present, so I liked that.

Closing Thoughts 🧃

The Reluctant Flirt is a small town romantic comedy that gives us the story of Kane and Sierra and their second chance. While the premise is good, the characters, story, and the writing felt pretty dated to me and unfortunately read like a story I've read a hundred times, with the lack of modern writing I've grown so used to. I can see this book being enjoyable if you've enjoyed historical romances of the early 2000s. It almost feels Victorian modern at times. The cozy small town is a good escape into a book, and the story is short and sweet.

Sierra Lourde has been divorced for a few years; her former husband cheated on her. Rather than date around, she focuses on running her boutique shop, Flirt, which is located in a small town on Outer Banks (a string of islands), North Carolina. Having relocated there from NYC, Sierra's thrilled to be in close proximity to her only family: sister Aspen and Aspen's boyfriend Brick. Happily-in-love Aspen is eager for her sister to have that kind of romance in her life, and repeatedly attempts to set Sierra up with Brick's best friend Kane. When Aspen finally gets Sierra in a room together with the mysterious "hottest bachelor in OBX", Sierra literally drops her glass at first sight.

Is he too hot too handle? Yes. Oh yes.
Is it actually her first time seeing him? ...no, you sweet summer child. It absolutely is not.
Is she already... intimately... familiar with this man? Uh huh you could say that. They got REAL FAMILIAR with each other REPEATEDLY one night 4 years ago, exchanging everything but their identifying info-
Naturally, the first thing to do when reunited with such a man... bolt. Just like she did 4 years ago, not giving this man (who'd by then already fallen head over heels in love with her) a chance. But never quite forgetting about him over the years, either.

It's giving (not Old Man, but) "Book Reviewer Yells at Cloud": what are you doing, Sierra? Turn around. Look at him, turn... Tu- darn it. But Kane isn't about to let her run away from him a second time.

The Reluctant Flirt does its title justice, because despite this being Every Woman's Chase Fantasy, Sierra resists, and runs, and resists, and runs... She tells herself it's because he was career-oriented when they first met, and has had a brief stint in prison since, but... that's not really it. She is afraid, and trying to convince herself he's no good for her (despite him actually being a really good person who's had crappy things done to him). She doesn't even try to see him for who he really is. But at the same time, she has never forgotten about him either. It gets to a point where rather than being romantic, it's a bit frustrating: Kane is very intense, but basically laying himself out there for her and very direct about his goal. But she's letting him just kind of happen to her, passively, without giving him anything back. Boy, he tried.

Sierra's also, ridiculously, letting this decision hinge on whether a CAT SHE GOT DAYS EARLIER accepts him. This attempt at adding in a bit of quirky levity doesn't work in Sierra's favor, or the story's. (Though I did end up liking the cat, not gonna lie.) As a couple, they could have instead discussed Kane's childhood, growing up with food insecurity, in a deeper way. It is a huge part of his motivation throughout this book and I feel like it would have helped Sierra understand most of his choices, bringing them closer together more naturally.

When they finally do reunite, it just doesn't surpass or live up to their first meeting. We see Kane chasing her (which at times is glorious, because nobody talks dirty like this guy), and taking the initiative constantly, but we don't see her really fall (back) in love with him, not in a way that works. At one point he opens up a little to her, and she's basically deciding "OK they're going to be together". Like a verbal agreement, blink and ya miss it. Where's the two of them from 4 years ago? That moment between them, that first night, I felt it. Their chemistry, their connection, the passion - all of that. I miss it (from one side) in their present storyline.

What would have worked so much better (in my completely humble opinion as a romance reader who loves the second chance trope), is if at some point, SHE had been the one who had to chase HIM. That would have put this on a whole nother level. I would have liked a conflict there, rather than in their work-setting, since Kane works in property development and Flirt's business location is on the line. At the very least, just have her put in some effort.

But in fairness, the book promises to be a fun, enjoyable, breezy read and I think it achieves that just fine. Kane's chase WAS juicy; his smutty talk and his sexy as heck determination gave us a completely different sort of romance fantasy that I was sat for regardless. It's on par with good grovel: if you want your MMC to be relentless in his desire, and see him go all in, with some good spice as a pay off, this could be a highly enjoyable bit of escapism for you.

This is the second book in a series of interconnected standalone romances; I don't think it's necessary to read book 1 (which is about Aspen and Brick) in order to enjoy book 2, but it's of course always an option to consider!

Thank you NetGalley and Blue Box Press for generously providing me with a copy of this book; all opinions expressed are honest, voluntary and 100% my own.

The Reluctant Flirt by Jennifer Probst delivers a heartfelt, character-driven romance rooted in the emotional fallout of betrayal, the hope of reinvention, and the slow, painful process of learning to trust again. It’s the second installment in the Outer Banks series but stands comfortably on its own, welcoming both new readers and returning fans with open arms.

At the center is Sierra Lourde, a woman still reeling from the implosion of her marriage after discovering her husband’s affair. Seeking an escape, she ends up in New York City, where one too many glasses of wine and a perfectly timed rescue from an awkward bar encounter leads to a one-night stand with a stranger. There are no names exchanged, no strings, and for Sierra, no regrets—until the next morning when the vulnerability of the moment becomes too much and she leaves before he wakes.

Fast-forward four years, and Sierra has rebuilt her life in the Outer Banks. Her boutique, aptly named Flirt, represents not just a business but a symbol of her independence, creativity, and control. She’s content. Or so she thinks—until the very man she ran from walks back into her life. Kane Masterson, now a developer with a high-stakes project that could destroy her shop, is no longer a charming stranger. He’s now her adversary, her temptation, and the one man who might unravel everything she’s worked so hard to protect.

The strength of this novel lies in the push and pull between Sierra and Kane. Their relationship is layered with unspoken history and unresolved attraction. Kane never forgot Sierra—he’s carried the weight of that night and the mystery of her disappearance with him ever since. Now that fate has handed him a second chance, he’s determined to use it. But Sierra, despite her obvious feelings, refuses to make the same mistake twice. Their dynamic is filled with sarcasm, simmering tension, and emotional depth that feels earned rather than forced.

Probst takes her time building their story. Through flashbacks and quiet character moments, we come to understand who these people are—not just what they want from each other, but what they fear. Sierra’s journey is one of reclaiming agency, not just romantically but professionally and emotionally. Kane, by contrast, must reconcile his past failures and learn how to show up for someone without trying to fix or control them.

The setting of the Outer Banks serves more than just aesthetic purposes—it reflects the novel’s themes of new beginnings and grounded connections. From boutique storefronts to beachfront views, the town feels alive and inhabited, with side characters that add flavor without overwhelming the main plot. The return of characters from Book of the Month, including Sierra’s sister Aspen and Kane’s best friend Brick, provides continuity for series readers while offering natural context for newcomers.

One standout element, mentioned by several early reviewers, is Montgomery the cat. A scene-stealer with attitude and surprising emotional resonance, Montgomery offers comic relief and symbolic weight, especially for Sierra, whose guardedness cracks just a bit more when she’s around him.

That said, the book isn’t without its minor flaws. The pacing dips in the second act, particularly as Sierra and Kane circle each other with limited forward motion. Some readers may find the tension overstretched, especially when it leans on misunderstandings that could be resolved with a single honest conversation. And while the emotional payoff hits home, the third-act conflict—centered around a development deal—feels more like a necessary hurdle than an organically escalating climax.

Despite these hiccups, The Reluctant Flirt succeeds as a mature, emotionally intelligent romance that prioritizes character growth over plot contrivance. It doesn’t rely on gimmicks or overblown melodrama. Instead, it focuses on two people who are deeply human—flawed, funny, wounded, and trying to do better. It’s a story about taking risks after heartbreak, allowing yourself to be seen, and finding someone who meets you exactly where you are.

For readers who crave a romance with heart, heat, and a touch of beach-town magic, Jennifer Probst delivers again. This is a love story that acknowledges how messy real emotions can be, and still finds a way to make you believe in happy endings.

Thank you to Blue Box Press and NetGalley for the ARC.
