100% recommend this fire book! Wilson exclaims the gospel story and majesty of Christ on every page. He opens the doorway to looking at the Bible in a whole new light of how God uses every person and every story to show Christ and show His character. Every page added excitement and joy and amazement to learning about who God is and how He worked through every page of His living word.
It’s hard to beat Incomparable for me, but this title from Andrew Wilson strikes a similar vein - short and impactful chapters describing the great story of Scripture. It was an ideal companion to my morning Bible reading, especially in this postpartum season.
An excellent book full of biblical theology. Andrew Wilson is quickly becoming one of my favourite theologians and writers. Definitely in my top 2 Wilson's.
What a captivating read! Each chapter is short, so very easy to pick up and read no matter how you’re feeling, and the content is so rich- Andrew Wilson guides us through the many layers to the gospel and how it affects what we believe. I couldn’t help but smile as I read it.
About 16 years ago, after finishing university, I stayed in Sheffield for a year of discipleship training with a local church. Alongside that, I worked at the CLC bookshop. I read quite a bit that year, but there was one book I kept noticing on the shelf and never quite picked up. I forgot the title over time, but not the sense that I'd missed something worth reading. A few days ago, it arrived in the post in a newly revised edition, and I finally recognised it. That book was GodStories by Andrew Wilson, now republished as Gospel Stories by @10ofthose
This book takes ten key events from the Old Testament and retells them in a way that highlights how they point forward to Christ. Wilson's aim is not simply to recount familiar stories, but to show how they fit into the larger story of redemption. Each chapter draws out the gospel threads running through the narrative, helping the reader see connections that are often missed or only loosely understood.
What I really liked was the balance between clarity and restraint in how those connections are made. Wilson doesn't force allegory onto the text or stretch meanings beyond what Scripture supports. Instead, he carefully traces patterns, promises, and themes that genuinely lead forward to Christ. The
result is something both accessible and theologically grounded.
The writing is concise and engaging, making it easy to read without feeling lightweight. Each chapter is short enough to hold attention, but substantial enough to give real insight. It works well for personal reading.
Personally, there was something satisfying about finally reading a book that had quietly stayed in the back of my mind for so many years. More than that, it served as a reminder of how richly the Old Testament points to Christ, not in forced or artificial ways, but through the unfolding story God has written from the beginning.

Gospel Stories by Andrew Wilson guides readers through the Bible’s one big story, capturing our imagination with rich storytelling and skillful biblical theology that point to a coherent portrait of Christ.
The first twenty-six chapters dive into the often unfamiliar and intimidating characters and events of the Old Testament. “We can see the gospel in the Garden of Eden, up the Tower of Babel, on Mounts Ararat and Sinai, in the songs of David and the proverbs of Solomon…,” and that’s a gift we might not have opened and received without Wilson’s guidance. “Each shard of gospel light brings a fresh perspective to the whole, and enlarges our vision of what God has done and who he is.”
The thirty-one chapters on the New Testament draw together the gospel threads woven through the Old Testament and untangle theological knots introduced in the epistles. We see the importance of Jesus’s being fully human and yet fully God. We begin to understand that the Old Testament blood bath in the Temple pointed to the ministry of our Great High Priest who sacrificed himself, rose from the dead, and continues to intercede for us.
The early church’s announcement that the kingdom of God is at hand was great news—and it’s an invitation to holy awe when we realize it was the same message Isaiah preached hundreds of years earlier. Gospel Stories provides insight into the greatest story. As a companion for personal devotions or a resource for families, it reinforces the reader’s love for the Main Character of the Bible and our hope in all that he has promised.
What stories are contained in holy scripture? In Gospel Stories, Andrew Wilson writes that the greatest story is richer, deeper, and more wonderful than we think.
Comprised of 57 short narratives, Wilson shares key verses and short stories from the entire Bible. He introduces the Gospel as a crystal, where you can appreciate it by seeing all the differences in color and contour. The Bible is a book about Jesus, but it is also a story about love, kingdoms, the church, and more.
Refreshing and Inspirational
Wilson is wonderful with words, and I found each entry to be fresh and exciting, insightful and profound. He illustrates and applies with ease. He is able to both help you grasp the big picture and go deep into the biblical narrative. This book will be a refreshing devotional read and inspirational for pastors, preachers, and teachers already familiar with Scripture.
Pithy and poignant, Gospel Stories is a beautiful exploration of the entire Bible. It is a joyful journey for those new to Jesus, and a heartwarming reminder that the good news never gets old.
I received a media copy of Gospel Stories and this is my honest review.
I'm not sure how to review this in a way. A lot of the material in itself is 5 star, thought-provoking, and my wife and I enjoyed reading through the daily insights these last 57 days.
it's this last feature that I found mildly frustrating. I couldn't quite work out how to make them fit. It's a schematic fifty-seven guide through some good biblical theology in a format of four-page stories that lend themselves to be devotional.
Fifty-seven is a good number for Heinz varieties, but not so much for a Christian calendar. Too many to run between New Year to Lent; again too many days for Lent itself; and, yet, not long enough to do other times of year.
However, being four pages, the devotionals themselves were slightly long compared with others we've read through.
I can’t get enough of these kinds of books Andrew Wilson writes— rich with illustrations and analogies, a bit humorous but filled with eternal significance, always bringing each story back to the most important Story ever told. And the last chapter! Wilson’s sweeping summary of Jesus throughout Scripture brought me to worship. This is a book I will return to regularly.
Andrew Wilson is the king of a great illustration that not only helps you to better understand the amazing truth he is talking about but that helps you better explain it to someone else! Not just that - it makes you want to share this good news with someone else! Highly recommend this one regardless of if you are exploring the faith, new to it, or a seasoned saint!
This is a very engaging and unique book on Biblical theology. There are so many good examples and analogies that make these truths come to life here. Andrew Wilson has a great way of speaking truth with great clarity and winsomeness. Really encourage all believers to get a hold of this work.
Andrew Wilson had a lot of good things to say, but this book overall felt far too disjointed and disorganized. Maybe it works better as a physical book (I listened to the audio book).
I really enjoyed this compilation of short reflections on the gospel throughout Scripture. Great to take in small doses to think about throughout the day. Highly recommended!
