A really hot and steamy tale. Very Maria style without the guns and violence one usually expects from a Mafia related read, although control is very evident. As is a burning need for revenge. But revenge is a fickle thing, it never has quite the outcome expected, as Nicolai quickly discovers. Nicolai is exactly as one would picture a mob boss, tough, unflinchingly remorseless, emotionless, unless it's about his family. Or is he... emotionless, I mean? As with any well forged plan, things go awry when he plans to use Roselind to enact his revenge against her father, what she brings out in him is not what he expected...as much as I wanted to despise Nicolai, I couldn't. Very soon I started loving everything about him. Even though his actions are abominable, his real character comes through and honestly, he's not all bad. If anything, this author has got me to feel so much sympathy for him, what he endured, why he is the way he is, isn't a simple "bad boy" Ms Harper has shown a side of him few see, she exposed all his "bad sides" yes... but through clever crafting of insights, she let's us see who he really is. And who he really is, is a guy VERY hard done by, a guy who lost it all, a guy who's pushed his feelings deep within him, a guy who's only recourse (in his mind) is to exact revenge on the person responsible. Roselind is his perfect means of doing just that. Or is it... I love how the author slowly has him questioning himself, fighting with himself and his whole plan. Which goes mainly exactly as he wanted it to, with some major deviations, the Roselind kind of deviation. You'll have to read it to appreciate how awesomely the author turned this, completely belly up!
Roselind has been squirreled for most of her life, she's completely naive and not prepared for truths she's forced to face, who she really is, why her mother kept her from being visible, and the fact that her nightmares are in fact memories, awful memories. I do like her spunk, as downtrodden as she is, she doesn't just give in. Her captivity at the hands of Nicolai brings her sexuality to the fore, throwing her into further turmoil. She comes to understand why her mother tried to hide her but it's too late. If she thought Nicolai was her worst nightmare and her greatest need, she's only just begun to realise the real nightmare is about to begin. Oh my word! WHAT Roselind deals with, and no, not only at the hands of Nicolai, but others too, the truths, the revelations she discovers, shatter her. Again, Ms Harper delivered this all for maximum impact and HECK it sure was mindboggling! There were times I really cringed and others where I felt the need, the attraction of both Roselind and Nicolai.
This book takes Mafia to a whole new level, the unscrupulous, morals flying out the window, disgust at what a parent can do, and a love as unlikely as a second sinking of the Titanic. There's a lot more to this book than the spice and steam, there is lots of heart in throat moments, lots of secrets, lots of action, lots of erotic scenes in a book ending in a major cliffhanger, that one can't help but be dying to find out what comes next!
