Veil of Power #2

Veil of the Past

Rate this book
The past has a strange way of coming back into the present.

Mine threatens everything that I’ve built and the future of the Camorra. But will the love that blooms be enough to stop it from enveloping me in darkness and all those who surround me?

Romiro Esposito

I’m the enforcer of the Camorra, my job is to serve the Camorra. Spending my entire life looking behind my back comes with the job. One thing that doesn’t is the way I feel about my friend. Alessia and I always seem to gravitate towards each other one way or another. But, when a single glimpse of someone from my past brings it crashing down. And a game of hide and seek begins.

Alessia Visconti

My family is the most notorious in the entire country, which comes with its own kind of danger, but nothing can compare to the danger of falling for your own friend, especially when it’s one-sided.

Romiro's always had a flirty personality, but when he becomes a possessive a-hole and his actions don’t match his words, it makes me question everything. And maybe those feelings aren’t so one-sided.

But when one letter forces the past into the present, everything changes.

Decade-long secrets are forced into the light, the past threatens the present and poses challenges that can destroy even the most powerful of all. But will love be enough to withstand the weight of the past? Or will the flames of the past burn everything in its wake?

Romiro's character feels different compared to the previous book. Additionally, this book needs editing—there were many mistakes and several unfinished events..

"I hear the need in her voice, the desperation, and it drives me wild, makes me want to punish her for being such a temptation, make her beg, make her scream my name to the damn sky." (Ch 18)

Though part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.

Romiro has a haunting past, one that he tried hard to bury, but the monster that did not want him, that put him through so much trauma, that discarded him as if he were nothing more than a piece of property to be sold and used... has reappeared when he had thought her long dead. Now, all that he has accomplished and worked for, and the love that he desperately wants, but denies and continuously pushes away, is in danger of being destroyed. Can he eliminate this threat before all is lost? And can he move past it all to embrace and allow the love of his life to thrive before it withers.

It was a little annoying how many times Romiro pushed Alessia away, but then pulled her back again because he couldn't let her go, and he wouldn't let anyone else have her. It was rather selfish of him and unfair to Alessia, though she kept letting him (not that she ever had a choice in the matter). He controlled the relationship and set the pace and the limitations. Domineering, possessive, and protective.

Yet despite all that, despite the numerous times her heart broke and she had to pretend everything was good, she was sweet, caring, and acquiescing. Her angst was heart-wrenching. Made my eyes tear up a little, my throat close, and chest clench at a couple of points in the story.

They face adversity, danger, in the middle of a war between the Camorra and the Outfit. In their respective familial syndicate organized lives, threats are just around the corner, bullets are whizzing above their heads, and almost every day is high-stakes. But love can survive... right?

This book put me through a gamut of emotions, a rollercoaster from anger to heartbreak, from thrill and excitement to a rush of adrenaline, fear, suspense, and horror... as only a well-written kind of book should. Now I need a nap to recover.

Good characters but unanswered questions
Although technically a standalone you are far better reading the first book to have a wider understanding of what’s going on and the introduction to these characters. There are specific trigger warnings for both the MMCs past and ones that actively happen to the FMC so do look out for these.
What I liked about the book was the characters themselves - Romiro comes across as light hearted and a jokester but there’s a lot more to him with a deeper side that’s smitten with Alessia 😍 and Alessia is strong to go through what she does and still maintain the positivity she does, she’s also not afraid to fight for what she needs!
At times the language was extremely repetitive, the same phrasing was used consecutively in scenes which was quite jarring for me as I wondered if I’d just re-read the same bits. There were a lot of unanswered questions and the end just seemed to happen out of nowhere without wrapping things up as a standalone - for instance why was Helen doing what she was doing to the girls and by she hates Romiro so much.

hey so i’m heartbroken.

the story was so beautiful, i love ale and rom together and i had a feeling from book one that they would end up together.

for the people complaining that rom doesn’t sound like himself and all that bullshi, please remember that book one was in eli and val’s pov so we never got to see what rom was dealing with behind closed doors. not only that but we see people a lot more differently than how we see ourselves, to val rom was a ball of sunshine in book one and that’s how we saw him he was happy and flirty. to eli his was impulsive, but happy and flirty. but deep down rom sees himself completely different.

Romiro, as an Enforcer for the Camorra has a dangerous job. He understands all that it entails. But underneath the surface there is trauma that he has buried so deep that it has become the very fabric of his being.

Alessia grew up in a family that is very notorious, alone that comes with its own dangers. As a medical student completing her residency, she gets a satisfaction out of helping those in need.

Romiro and Alessia are childhood friends. They have known each other for as long as they can remember. Yet they always seem to gravitate towards each other, until they give into their unrequited desire for each other, but when someone from his past comes back, everything he’s fought to build, his new found love, begins to unravel.

Romiro blows hot and cold, pushing and pulling, giving Alessia mixed signals, he becomes a possessive a-hole, his actions don’t match his words, and when Alessia begins to question everything, including her feelings, she takes a stand, all or nothing.

Romiro realises his mistake, he accepts what he did wasn’t right, his past clouding his judgement, that Alessia is the most beautiful woman to grace his life, the purest soul that brings light to his darkness, and he will not let her go, vowing to protect for always.

But when his past and present collide Romiro is forced to bring decade long secrets into the light, because to save the woman he loves and two of his friends, he will need to become one with those secrets, the secrets that have shaped him into the man that he is, one bent on exacting revenge on the one person who was supposed to protect him but didn’t.

Alessia goes through the process of making sense of her thoughts, feelings and emotions of what she endured. Romiro is angry that he couldn’t protect Alessia, keep her safe from the one person who caused him harm. It pains him to see Alessia retreat into herself, lifeless, devoid of the laughter and joy that she hides within.

Romiro’s only focus is Alessia. He is there for her in every way, her strength, her rock, her support. When he encourages her to take the next step in her recovery, she begins to open up, on the loss of her Nonna, and of the traumatic experience she went through. Day by day, Alessia becomes a better version of herself, reacclimatising to life, with routine, stability that helps to keep her grounded.

And in a feel good moment, Romiro brings Alessia back to the one place that holds so much meaning for them, that one place that solidified no only their relationship but also their love for each other, and on one knee, with their family and friends in attendance does he promise Alessia not only his heart but his soul, forever.

Despite the trauma these two faced they loved each other through it all, these two knew how to make us laugh, their banter keeping the readers engaged in the story. The character development and world building was on point.

The spice was a spicing. Romiro controlled every ouch of pleasure that he gave Alessia, both giving as good as they got.

Recommend both the author and the book. Looking forward to reading what this author writes next.

They’ve been friends for years, but what happens when they break those boundaries and cross into unspoken territory, risking their hearts and their souls? Well when Romiro finally gives into his feelings for Alessia, it feels like everything finally falls into place. But when the ghosts of his past start to haunt his ability to love his present and future, they both find themselves fighting for their love no matter the cost.

Veil of the Past is the second book in the interconnected world of Serafina Marron’s Camorra mafia universe so I highly recommend reading the prior book which follows Val and Emiliano and their love story.

But let me tell you, this one was just as addictive as the last. Romiro and Alessia had my heart from day one and I was curious to see how they would get together but this book blew my expectations out of the water. This wasn’t just a friends to lovers romance, no, it was deeply emotional and they felt more like star crossed lovers, living in a world that can only tear them apart.

Romiro, oh Romiro. He was rough and tough but his backstory broke my heart and I could truly sense his inner struggle as he battled the ghosts of his past with the pureness of his relationship with Alessia. While the push and pull was hard to read, when he finally gave into his emotions and allowed himself to truly feel for Alessia, it was magic.

But with an FMC like Alessia, of course Romiro couldn’t resist. Alessia knew when to give herself, when to surrender and accept the risks that come with baring your soul to another. And that’s what made her so loveable and endearing. She’s just so authentic!

"From now on, you're mine as much as I'm yours."

Whether it be external forces or their own internal struggles, Romiro and Alessia fought through any adversity to be with each other. And that’s why this one was so emotional, it was truly about a couple that was perfect for each other, fighting for one another and their love. Serafina Marron has done it again and it’s an understatement to say how much I’m looking forward to the next one.

This is book two in an interconnecting series they can be read as standalones and I haven't read book one but I will for sure after reading this.

Romiro and Alessia.....oh boy where do I start with these two!!? They are best friends and known each other a long time they have been a support for each other for as long as they can remember but....what happens when they start to feel more than just friendship!? Alessia's family decide to set her up on a blind date and all is going well until Romiro finds out and this is what pushes him past just being in the friend zone....he wants her all to himself. I fell in love with Alessia she's so sweet and strong and a feisty woman she does get messed about by Romiro quite a few times when he just drops her and gives her no explanation as to why!! which did get on my nerves like he didn't want her but she couldn't have anyone else nah....sorry but be a man and claim your woman lol. Alessia is so sweet that she takes him back every time!!

When Romiro's past comes back to haunt him he knows he has to keep Alessia safe but it does lead to a lot of tension as he won't open up to her and this causes the few break ups between them. When Alessia is tested in the last part of the book she goes thru something traumatic and my heart went out to her reading this, I just wanted to pull her out of the pages and give her one big hug. There is massive chemistry between these two and the spice is 🥵 only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was some of the writing felt repetitive and something that happens at the end just ended with no explanation as to what happened after which sorta left me scratching my head and it may show up in book three but apart from that it's a fast paced story with a decent storyline but please read the TW at the beginning as there are plenty.

I am absolutely loving this series, first Val and Emiliano and now we have Romiro and Alessia. I will say to please check the TWs as this book does deal with sensitive topics.

Romiro and Alessia’s tale is a friends to lovers. These two have been each other’s support systems for as long as they can remember but now the pair have started to feel something more than friendship🤭.

Alessia’s family decide to set her up on a blind date and this is definitely what pushes Romiro cross the line between them. Romiro crashes their date and let’s just say he made his feelings quite clear, trust me you’ll understand when you read the chapter👏🏼.

I absolutely loved Alessia, she is a strong and feisty and determined woman. Romiro is as possessive and protective as ever when it comes to Alessia😮‍💨.

But all that being said Romiro most certainly has his demons which come back to haunt him in this book and this did lead to a lot of tension between the pair in this book. His past does put Alessia at risk and in the second half of the book we see Alessia work through her feelings of the event. My heart absolutely broke for Alessia, but with the support of Romiro and her family she worked through her trauma❤️‍🩹

This book is definitely fast paced and the plot was most certainly intriguing. The chemistry between Alessia and Romiro was impeccable, I loved it!

Thank you so much to the author and chaotic creatives who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭

as someone who usually gravitates towards darker mafia romance stories, i wasn’t sure what to expect going into this. would it be lighter, like veil of vengeance, or something much darker? it’s still on the lighter side but it completely won me over. it kept all the classic mafia romance elements while softening them just enough to make this an easy and enjoyable read, which make it a book that could really appeal to readers who are just getting into mafia or dark romance. romiro completely stole the show for me. his possessiveness was top tier in the best way, and his dynamic with alessia was full of tension and chemistry. the banter, the tension, the spice, and the undeniable pull between them truly added something more to veil of the past. what i didn’t expect, but appreciated, was the softer tone and emotional layers. the mental health representation brought extra depth to the story, and the characters connecting emotionally and not just physically gave the romance a more tender and vulnerable side. if i had one small complaint again, it could be the pacing. i found myself wishing for a little more mafia related plot and actions through the book and not mostly just at the end. still, for readers who enjoy mafia or want to start with something lighter, this book is a great choice.

a huge thank you for serafina marron and chaotic creatives for the arc.

ARC Review

I thoroughly enjoyed Veil of the Past! This book is a captivating continuation of the Veil of Power series, and it kept me engaged from start to finish. The story beautifully intertwines themes of love, danger, and the haunting shadows of the past.

The characters, Romiro and Alessia, are well-developed and relatable. Romiro, as the enforcer of the Camorra, grapples with his feelings for Alessia while navigating the treacherous waters of his past. The tension between them is palpable, and I found myself rooting for their relationship despite the obstacles they face. The blurb hints at a gripping narrative where secrets from the past threaten to unravel everything they hold dear, and the execution does not disappoint.

Marron's writing is both entertaining and engaging, making it easy to lose track of time while reading. I appreciated how the author explored the complexities of friendship and love, especially in a world filled with danger and betrayal. The stakes are high, and the emotional depth adds a layer of intensity that kept me turning the pages.

Overall, Veil of the Past is a fantastic read that sets the stage for the next book of the series with all the trauma. I will definitely be continuing with the Veil of Power series to see where it goes next!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Romiro and Alessia. He has a past that haunts him and he has tried so hard to forget. Out of sight out of mind. However, when the one who has thrown you away, used you and abused you, and caused you some of the worst trauma possible comes back, it is a little hard to keep it buried. This puts all that he has worked for and everyone he loves is in danger of being destroyed. He is also an enforcer for the Camarro. Alissia is his friend and the woman that he such strong feelings for. He would protect her at all costs. She is the family of the most notorious crime family in the entire country. Romiro is her best friend and she is in love with him. But being in love with him is one sided in her mind and it is exhausting. He is always pushing her away. He certainly gives her whiplash when he says one thing and turns into the mean man that really angers her. However, when a letter arrives and his whole world is turned upside down, will he be able to protect not only himself but Alissia. You have to read to find this out. This book has all kinds of twists and turns and keeps you one your toes all the time. It was a good read.

It is suggested that you read book 1 (Veil of Vengeance)before reading, I didn’t find It necessary. I am interested in so I will pick it up. There are a few things I would like to read about.

This story has a few triggers and I would definitely suggest looking at them. Here are a few:
Addiction
Torture
Water boarding
Psychological torture
Abuse
Depression

I like that both characters grew up in the mafia settings. It made sense that Alessia would be more accepting of Romiro and his actions. Their chemistry jumped off the pages.
He was giving a lot of push and pull energy. She kind of let him work through it. Even when it was hurtful.

While the story does have violence and a lot of triggers. There are moments of fun. The banter, the spice and supporting characters gave the readers some easy times.

The is family drama and a past that barrels into the present. Family, threats and mafia drama take us on an entertaining journey. I enjoyed the mafia world,

Tropes: banter, best friends to lovers, cinnamon roll/golden retriever MMC, he falls first, Italian mafia, secret relationship, possessive MMC, mental health rep

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

This was such a cute, cozy read! I normally don’t lean towards mafia romance, absolutely no judgement to those who love it, it’s just not something that I enjoy as much. This book however, was really good!

The romance, spice (more particularly the voyeurism 🤤), banter, and chemistry between the characters was perfect! I absolutely loved Romiro! His possessiveness was TOP TIER.

The only reason that I rated this book 4 stars is because I was hoping there would be a little more action throughout the book. There was quite a bit towards the end (like 75% into the book), but before that, there was just some family drama and some spicy romance that just felt kind of drawn out, but I love the mental health rep! If you like a more cozy romance with not as much action, then this book is definitely for you!

This is the second book in the series. I read this as a standalone. I was able to read this without feeling lost. As always, check the trigger warnings before reading. This is a Mafia Romance with dark elements.

Alessia has a lot of patience. More than I would have been. Romiro kept pushing her away. (I think I got whiplash from the number of times he pushed her away just to pull her back in). Alessia is a very caring and sweet girl. She's not afraid to fight for what's right. I related to her the most.

I enjoyed this book so much. I love me a good Mafia Romance. I love a book with good banter with a mix of comedy that had me laughing so hard at times.
This book is full of suspense, horror that kept me on my toes.

This is the second book in this series, and this is Alessia and Romiro’s story.
Allessia is the daughter of one of the most notorious families in the country, and Romiro is her best friend, and enforcer. When Romiro’s past comes back to haunt him, his protective side comes out.
This is a good easy to read, action packed story, with family, friendships, emotions, danger, suspense, intrigue, friends / lovers, revelations, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an enjoyable, tragic, haunting, and unpredictable page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.

Although the blurb stated Veil of the Past could be a read as a standalone, I did feel a little lost as to the dynamic of the mafia world, other than the MMC being an enforcer. This story follows best friends, Romiro and Alessia.

I enjoyed the mutual pining between Romiro and Alessia. They both have kept their feelings hidden from each other so as not to ruin their long-time friendship. Being the enforcer for the Camorra, Romiro is quite protective of Alessia and is hesitant to pursue anything further with her for fear of putting her in danger. Because of this, the tension between these two was palpable, and Romiro’s possessiveness made it even more so. Romiro’s childhood was not a happy one, and the flashbacks into his past had my heart breaking for him.

The plot was fast-paced, but some of the flow seemed off at times. There were a couple of unresolved plot points that would've wrapped up the story smoothly if those points had been resolved.

This is the second book of this series and can be read as a standalone. Fast paced, intriguing storyline. Romiro and Alessia care about each other, but they can't make up his mind, does he want her in his life or not? I kept cheering for them to be deflated at times. However in the mist of a mafia war and danger, Romiro's protectiveness and possessiveness keeps pulling back in until? Great story that leaves us with a few unresolved issues that I sure will be resolved int he next installment of this series.

I really enjoyed reading this book! Romiro and Alessia's story had me hooked from the very first page. The tension, the secrets, the slow unraveling of their connection, it was everything I love in a mafia romance.
Watching their friendship teeter on the edge of something deeper, especially with the weight of the past threatening to ruin it all, made for such an emotional and intense journey.
The mix of danger, loyalty, and their love kept me turning the pages late into the night. Thank you so much for sending me this ARC, I absolutely enjoyed diving into this world!

Friends to lovers is not a typical trope for me, but after I read the blurb, I just had to read this.

It's also my first time reading a story by this author!
I will definitely check her backlist for more!

I enjoyed both main characters. Alessia has backbone that I love.
Romiro, finally had the impetus he needed to go after Alessia!

But, will their world keep them apart!

Great dialogue, enjoyed the steam, enjoyed the angst!

Not For Me...

I don't want to potentially yuck somebody's yum, so I will try and keep it basic. Do remember this is my opinion only.

The MCs, Alessia and Romiro, were both lovable, there were some decent spicy scenes, and I felt the story had great potential. Unfortunately, the book lost its way at times, and as a result, the "main event" was rushed.

Overall, I felt like the book lacked a certain je ne sais quoi. Maybe it just wasn't the book for me...🤷‍♀️😞

Alessia and Romiro are best friends in a world like there's its danger around every corner, and when the past comes back will it push them apart or be able to draw them closer, to crossing a line. Well written engaging steamy, desires, action and more.
