As they grow closer, Solveig begins to discover that everything she knows and everyone she has killed may have all been for a lie. And with every use of her weakening power, a death knell approaches. With nowhere else to turn, she begins to trust the prince who makes her long for a life she cannot have.
But there is more at work in the depths of Osvolta than either of them knows, an unquenchable force lying in wait to tip the scales in its own favour.
Can you ever really trust your enemy? Or will they always betray you in the end?
Don't miss the brand new fantasy romance obsession, "The Broken Kingdoms of Osvolta". A captivating, soul wrenching tale of love, loss and what happens when the princess becomes the villain in her own story.
Please Note: The Broken Kingdoms of Osvolta contains mature themes and is intended for readers aged 18+. Reader discretion advised.
Solid 4.5 stars!! Thank you Rebecca to giving me the honor of an ARC copy of this book!
I really enjoyed the story, world building, pacing and dynamic between the characters in the book, both main characters and side characters! The book have great representation with both queer and nonbinary people! Interesting element magic and a lot of secrets!! I read the book in basically one day and now I can’t wait for book two🫠🫠🫠 the mmc is a cinnamon roll and the fmc is a morally grey killer, best combo😩😩
This book is quite the ride. Golden retriever MMC, FMC that’s morally grey and really struggling under pressures from her “family” taking advantage after trauma to turn her into a weapon. It’s filled with cute scenes, romantic tension, betrayals and enough plot twists to give you a bit of whiplash! With a healthy dose of violence/gore.
I’m so grateful I got to read this ARC, I just wish that didn’t mean I had longer to wait for the next instalment 😩😂
A fabulous first novel with a grumpy FMC and sunshine MMC Plot twists, secrets and a ToG-style ending has me desperate for MORE
Solveig is deep, dark, tragically conditioned to be a weapon and an assassin for her asshole family but is slowly discovering the truth, whatever that may be
Eloquently explores the journey of self-discovery when being grown up believing and being told 1 thing, but starting to form your own thoughts and opinions, challenging the norm
I feel like I’ve learned so much but also nothing at all and have 0 predictions about book 2
Really really special story I’m so happy to have had early access!❤️🤭✨
‘Name it princess, and it’s yours’… ‘you have my by the damn throat, regardless’
‘All you have to do is say the word… I’d see you burn this world to the ground and reign over its ashes a dark queen’
Well this had me hooked from the first page to the last. And that ending. I need book 2!
Two royals, enemies, end up working together to find out the problem that is happening with the magic. Both have secrets. But are they enough to keep them apart.
Fan of grumpy x sunshine, forbidden love, she’s the morally grey one, betrayal, unique magic system.
I think I might have read the best book of 2024. I mean at least of what I have read. I tough I was going to like The Broken Kingdoms of Osvalta, but I didn’t anticipated becoming obsessed.
In this story we follow Solveig. She is a princess that has kind of become the Villain, and she is tasked with finding the cause of a mysterious sickness that is slowly killing the people in her kingdom. And for that she has to work with a prince from an enemy nation who is sunshine in a bottle.
And it is not just that there is a cool plot and the tropes that we all like. But the fact that the plot actually holds itself through all the book. The book starts with action and from that moment forward you don’t get a single moment of rest. And the way in which is written helps a lot to get into the story. It is simple addicting. I mean just so you can have an idea, I started the book on Friday night and if not because I was dying of tiredness and have a concert that I bought tickets for a while ago I would have been perfectly able to read this one in one sitting.
The characters are amazing. I really like how they are not perfect and it is something that is hinted. The author is not trying to sell us the perfect chosen one savior. And it’s really relatable to have characters that are a “mess”, and more so, because they are close to my age and I am a mess.
And the secondary characters are really cool too. I loved the little we get to see about them and I am really looking forward to see if there will be a bit more about them on the next installment.
Another thing I really enjoyed was the banter between the tow main characters. I think it was really good and loved all the foreplay. And there is attraction but there is not spice. I am actually beginning to be a bit tired that all the books have to have spice. And this was something that I was discussing with my friends the other day and we all agreed on the fact that it is starting to be a bit too much for our taste.
And the thing is that the plot kept getting better and better and the stakes higher and higher. And the books ends in the mother of all clifhangers.
Honestly, I think this might have been the best debut I have ever read! So just leve everything you are doing and go to pick this book so I can fangirl about it.
Also, I would like to take the chance to thank the author for giving me an ARC.
First off I’d like to say thank you to the author for giving me an arc copy of this book. This is my first ever arc read. Secondly, I’m probably going to give spoilers so if I do I’m sorry.
I’ve been following the author for a while on TikTok and the whole concept of a morally grey fmc was the sole reason I chose to follow and keep up with this work.
First thoughts after finishing? Why did it have to end there!? I need answers, and I needed them yesterday. I had a suspicion about Solveigs power but to have it confirmed was *chefs kiss*
The plot had me hooked from the get go. The potential it started with so the story could take many different paths was amazing. The world building, character descriptions, just general information dump whilst slowed me down to begin with by the end I appreciated it so much as it gave me a sense of belonging within the story.
This is a SLOW BURN and when I say slow I mean over 20 chapters before we meet Emmerich(mmc). If that ain’t your cup of tea don’t sip it. I however love the relationship building and the tension, oh my the tension.
My one and only issue was the massive character overload at the beginning. You meet just about everyone relevant to the plot very quickly with a few exceptions( I’m looking at you Emmerich) that being said. I still thoroughly enjoyed this book.
If you made it this far into my review, congratulations we are near the end.
Overall I have this 5/5 because hello it was amazing. In so totally proud of Rebecca for this debut novel and I cannot wait for everything that happens next.
This book is a masterpiece, solid 4.5 stars! Thank you to the author for allowing me the pleasure of an early copy! I adored the characters in this story, a strong, powerful FMC who may be more than she seems. And a fearsome MMC who, as it turns out, is a cinnamon roll of sweetness! The supporting characters who were beautifully developed and had their own distinct personalities but worked amazingly to move the plot forward. The diversity in this book was wonderful and felt completely natural. The plot!! Omg the plot, it was fully developed and moved forward with intention, no moments of awkwardness, no wondering why someone appeared or did what they did. And the scenery. It was so beautifully described that I felt truly immersed in the book. Whilst it was written with depth and beauty, it moved with a wonderful pace! This was a wonderful book, full of beauty and creativity! It fully hooks you in and I spent every waking moment thinking about when I could continue reading! My only issue, and it’s tiny, is that the perspective changes took some getting used to, everything else was beautiful though!
After some time stewing on my thoughts, a little update. Run to Amazon, get a copy for your kindle, a copy for your shelf and a copy for your loved ones!! This book is so much more than simply fantasy, it's a story of growth and deception, mystery and magic! Everything you could want in a single book. And it's up there in my top 5! I think my top five is being held by indie authors this year cause damn!
Solveig is burdened with a dark power: she can drain someone of their water. For this, she has been turned into a perfect weapon, an executioner for the crown. And to accomplish that, she's had no choice but to embrace her darkness. But when she is forced to work with Emmerich, the enemy prince from another kingdom, to try and break the curse killing magic users, her humanity resurfaces. As secrets are revealed and her magic weakens, she has no choice but to trust him. And she doesn't know who the real enemy is anymore.
This book was a very exciting story. It's not often that we see female main characters that are dark and tortured like Solveig is, and the author did a great job with it. Even if she's done despicable things, it's very easy to relate to her and understand why she did what she did, which makes the story all the more exciting. Emmerich was very intriguing as well, full of mystery, charm and surprises that made me want to discover everything. The plot in itself is very exciting and gripping, full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Our characters evolve in a complex, yet very well-written world, and the writing is immersive, making the experience all the more exciting. As for the romance, it's an amazing slow burn that warmed my heart and broke it several times, which I adored. I'm very excited to see what's next!
I highly recommend if you like intense fantasy romance.
"One day, Solveig Maleen, you're going to have to face every dark piece of your soul. The choice of whether you face it alone or with someone to help is yours and yours alone."
4.5 stars ARC Review: oh wow what an amazing fantasy debut! i absolutely loved it!! a torturous yet tortured fmc, a devoted and passionate mmc, a diverse and interesting range of side characters, and a world of powers, death, and mystery. a great fantasy book to sink your teeth into! the plot of this book took me a minute to get into with the world building and understanding the characters, but once the ball got rolling i really really enjoyed it! i liked the idea of the mystery the mc’s were trying to solve, i found it to be a strong and compelling plot to start off the series! solveig, our fmc, is a really interesting and well-written character. her stubbornness did annoy me at times but i honestly really feel for her and her position; losing your love and then being forced into a torturer and executioner by your family is horrid. i adored her development in this and seeing her come out of her shell whenever emmerich was around. emmerich, our mmc, was very cute. i really liked him, i loved his devotion to solveig (something i’m hoping gets explored further in the rest of the series) and he was just so dedicated to helping her become the person she deserves to be after all her heartache and pain. a really great debut, i really enjoyed it! thank you so much for the ARC!
The cinnamon roll prince of an enemy kingdom and the morally grey princess who's family has manipulated into their personal executioner being forced to work together to solve the mystery of a curse that is killing the kingdom's magic wielders, what could possibly go wrong👀
I had the honour of reading The Broken Kingdoms of Osvolta when it was still a draft, but having now also read the published version I can only say wow! I loved this story so much, it's got my favourite type of enemies to lovers where daggers and blood are drawn. A very satisfying storyline with layered characters that keep evolving.
This is the type of book I would have gobbled up even if I wasn't friends with the author, it's the perfect fantasy blend (according to my tastes anyway)
If you enjoy enemies to lovers, where she is the morally grey one, magic, corrupt leaders, a mystery, a cinnamon roll prince, you should give The Broken Kingdoms of Osvolta a read.
I was hooked straight away, Rebecca bretherton has created a world that’s so submersible that you forget it’s not your world. This book is a mixture of everything I love in a book! The darkness the fmc has to fight from outside forces but also within is such an incredible piece of art! this book has such an incredible fmc, Solveig has so much depth to her and she is someone you can’t stop reading about ! From beginning to end I felt like I was constantly hungry for more ! If you love fantasy, slow burn, enemies to lovers and a story plot that has depth and twist and turns at every corner this book is for you !!!
This book is so good! There is amazing world building, magic and tension for days between the morally grey princess and the enemy sunshine prince. I was on my toes, never knowing what will happen next, and the cliff hanger makes me want more yesterday 😍😍
"I'd see you burn this world to the ground and reign over it's ashes a dark queen"
After being exiled to Luxenal Mine to be it's personal executioner, after the devastating murder of her betrothed, Princess Solveig has used her grief to make herself into the villain her reputation has thrust upon her. Forced to be the unbeatable weapon in the crown's arsenal, ensuring people cower to her mercy, Solveig is known across the lands as 'The Reaper' and dictated as caring little for the lives she takes at the behest of her family.
However, underneath her ruthless and aloof façade is a woman who grieves deeply, and has lost so much. She's still an absolute baddy don't get me wrong, her fierce attitude, sharp-tongue, and unrelenting tenacity was powerful, and she's definitely a force to be reckoned with, especially with a dagger in hand, but even more so when she calls upon the power she holds, that nobody should possess... the ability to draw every drop of water from a person.
Solveig absolutely blew me away, I would burn the world to the ground for her, morally black, and beautifully layered, Princess Solveig is a character that is so remarkable and raw, that she is completely unforgettable.
But when Solveig does the unimaginable and not only saves the life of the prince of a neighbouring Kingdom, whose the next to be executed in a bid to test her loyalty to the crown, and would snap the fragile alliance between her kingdom and theirs, but also abandons her post, and flees to said neighbouring kingdom, her family are livid, and determined to haul her back and make her bend to their whims once again. However, Solveig is not so easily corralled or manipulated, but when someone she holds closest and loves fiercely dies in the same gruesome way as her beloved, she's forced to team up with Prince Emmerich Anders, heir to the enemy kingdom across the sea, in the hopes that together, they can solve the mystery of this curse that is purging elementals across the kingdom.
Prince Emmerich is a breath of fresh air, he's witty, sarcastic, and he loves nothing more than getting under Solveig's skin, much to her dismay. He brings out the vicious and vulnerable parts of her in such a delicious and intoxicating way. They're opposites in almost every way imaginable, Emmerich has the freedom to sail across the continents to his hearts content, whilst Solveig has spent her life chained and suffocated under her families thumbs with a pressure that is unyielding.
Emmerich is so cheeky and mischievous, he sees underneath Solveig's masks and allows, and encourages, her to feel her emotions completely, helping her face her demons head on and overpowering them, this man is so fine, and so in tune with his own feelings, and expressing them in healthy, powerful ways, that he is definitely an 11/1o.
"I sailed halfway across the country to find you. I have no intentions of turning back."
The writing in this story is so breath-taking and lush that you feel immediately immersed and seamlessly transported into this vast and gorgeous world. The chapters are short and snappy but boy do they pack a punch! I just cannot get over how immersive this story is, the lore of the world and it's magic system is refreshing, rich, unique and intricately crafted. It's just a beautiful escape from the horrible world we live in.
The characters themselves are intriguing and well developed. I'm obsessed with the delectable tension, and slow-burn that develops at an almost excruciating level (in the best way), but burns into a raging inferno between Emmerich and Solveig. He is charming, suave and cool-headed, forever finding ways to make life a little more fun, whereas Solveig is a vicious, stabby assassin, who sees the darkness in every corner. Both intimidating in their own ways, they command attention from everyone around them, especially when in their own sparring matches whether that be physical or verbal. The tension is utterly electrifying, and the feelings these characters feel are so raw, passionate, real and evocative, it packs an emotional punch that is so devastating, moving and palpable all at once.
Be prepared for an emotionally damaging cliff-hanger because I was not..... I am pacing the floor, and I still do not know how to feel. All I do know is.. that I'll be eagerly anticipating the next book in the series. The layers to the character, the plot, the lore.... INCREDIBLE
The beautiful imagery and astounding character development?!?!?!?! I AM FLOORED If you're looking for a gothic, dark, gritty and raw story that'll have you captivated from start to finish, then get ready for 'The Broken Kingdoms of Osvolta' with a plot that's full of twists, political and religious intrigue, all set in a dark world shadowed by a curse that threatens all elementals across the realm. I cannot wait for book two, because that ending?!??!?!?!?
I liked the story a lot and for my enjoyment I want to rate this 4 stars or even 4.5 stars, but it could really benefit from another round of edits. I liked the magic system and the world building. The dialogue and description was also really easy to follow and it flowed quite nicely. It did take me about 150 pages of the kindle edition to get invested though.. I was hoping that would happen sooner but that may have also just been a me issue.
There are three things that are making me rate this lower than I would like to.
The perspective feels a little all over the place. It comes across like this is supposed to be a dual-pov book. There are even two different chapter headings - aire and hydro for the two main characters, which is a lovely touch, but the pov changes within these chapters more often than not. Sometimes the pov shifts when there's a break within a chapter, but sometimes it shifts back and forth within the same scene. And sometimes we get povs from other characters entirely. There's a chapter at the start from Solveig's family's pov, but I don't consider that much of a problem. It gets confusing when we suddenly have a few lines of Bleeker's internal thought process, for example, before switching back to whoever's pov we're supposed to be getting. I got confused a lot while reading this book because of it. At first I thought it was more of an omniscient narrator, but as I read on, it felt more like it was supposed to be dual-pov... It wasn't very clear.
As much as I like the character of Solveig and how stab happy she was, at times it felt like daggers were her only personality trait sadly.
My last issue is just a case of another round of simple edits. Punctuation and capitalisation were a big issue in this book. Some sentences also didn't make any sense.
I am excited for the next instalment and I really want to know what happens next. A huge testament to the author for writing something so gripping that I'm still very invested despite the things I flagged above. I'm sorry I don't want to sound harsh, but I also don't want to lie in my review. You wrote a great book and created a really interesting world!
In this narrative, we follow Solveig, a princess who has inadvertently assumed the role of the antagonist. She is entrusted with the task of uncovering the root cause of an enigmatic illness that is gradually claiming the lives of her kingdom's inhabitants. To accomplish this, she must collaborate with a prince from a rival nation who exudes an irrepressible optimism.
Beyond the captivating plot and the incorporation of popular tropes, the book's strength lies in its ability to maintain its coherence throughout its entirety. The narrative commences with immediate action, ensuring that readers remain fully engaged from the outset. The writing style further enhances this engagement, creating a compelling and addictive reading experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, world-building, pacing, and character dynamics, encompassing both primary and secondary characters. The book commendably incorporates diverse representation, including queer and non-binary individuals. Additionally, it introduces intriguing elemental magic and a multitude of secrets.
In my opinion, this literary work stands as one of the most impressive debuts I have encountered. I wholeheartedly recommend that you prioritise reading this exceptional book. As in, stop what you are doing and buy this book!
Thank you, Rebecca, for the early copy of your book and for all the fun chats on TikTok. I've loved every post, comment, and teaser you've shared. This is an incredible work of art, and I can't wait to get my hands on the hardcover.
I really enjoyed this book and I think this is an amazing debut novel 😍 For more details: Plot 5/5 ⭐: Very unique story idea, fast paced, easy to follow and enjoyable to read. A plot twist I didn't fully see coming at the end. I'm very excited for book 2 to come out. Romance 5/5 ⭐: I haven't read a great YA romance in a while, but this one was everything! It is truly perfect, the banter, the tension, the emotions... I'm in love with the characters' love 🥺 Characters 3,5/5 ⭐: My expectations might have been too high here as I have been looking for a true female villain main character for a long time. While the fmc is definitely morally gray, I didn't get villain vibes from her. I would have loved to understand her actions more, why she didn't just leave instead of submitting herself to her parents tortures, etc... But overall I liked her and all of the other characters too. Teris was quite annoying though 😅 Writing or Editing 2/5 ⭐: I loved the author's writing style, it was easy to follow and fun to read. However, there were a lot of editing mistakes especially in the beginning of the book. Words missing, sentences without verbs, "where" instead of "were", punctuation, at one point the fmc got handcuffed twice within one page (not on purpose!) so at points it was a little hard and frustrating to read the book, but it got better and the mistakes got a lot less frequent.
The Broken Kingdoms of Osvolta follows Solveig on her journey from the villian to the heroine. Solveig's story and the abuse she suffered through the hands of her family and trying to find her way out both broke my heart and gave me hope. Her difficulty moving beyond and getting away from them and their toxic beliefs after a tragic loss left tears in my eyes for days. The characters were relatable and I'm obsessed with the love interest, Emmerich. He is charming, mature, and a little too perfect sometimes. But when he messes up, he messes up big time. The pacing was so spot on, I never had a day where I needed to put it down or take a break. The only heartbreak I'm currently suffering from is the fact that it's book 1 and I have to wait for the next. I like that this book implies spiciness, which I suspect will come to fruition in book 2, and has mature themes, but still manages to have some lightheartedness. The focus was mainly on the relationships that revolved around Solveig and I really like how she moved through her grief as she learned more about herself. This book would be a great fit for romance lovers who like a lot of fantasy in the mix or fantasy lovers who enjoy a good romance as well. I struggled a little bit with the main character's stubborness, but overall, enjoyed the book immensly.
Enemies to Lovers is a hard thing to get right. But my god did Rebecca nail this! The banter and interactions between these characters was second to none, I have read soo many books where characters flip so quickly as though they didnt hate them in first place, yet even during a hate filled argument the chemistry is there bubbling under the surface. When things start to change, you are then gifted with the FMCs full internal battle, not a straight 'oh I like him now' fickle character, shes strong and fierce in her own right. Just overall so well 'executed'. (See what I did there) 😉
The book itself was a wild ride of twists and turns, I had no idea where the story was going in the best possible way! I was so invested in these characters (that I fell in love with instantly!) That I literally couldn't put the book down or think past the page I was reading.
Spent a week in a bit of a book slump after reading Mistborn and this book brought me out of it! In the best way possible this was such an easy read. It jumped straight into it, we learned the characters and world as we went along, in a natural way, instead of in an intense first few hundred pages that are a slog to get through.
(Im)Patiently waiting for book 2! The questions I have and answers I need!
I’ve been in a little bit of a reading slump and this book got me out of it, I absolutely devoured this.
She’s a morally grey princess turned executioner, and he is a golden retriever enemy prince (from a different isle), who believes she can be so much more than they’ve turned her into.
The tension between Solveig and Emmerich is insane. This is a very slow burn. I just can’t wait for them to bump uglies - am I a perv?
There are major plot twists, not once did I really know which direction it’d be going and I loved it. Aldrik’s letter absolutely killed me, I wasn’t prepared for that.
I can’t express how much I just need to know more. I fear I will be feral until there is a book 2 I can lose myself in. I absolutely recommend reading this.
Quotes:
📕”she’s a real piece of work, but gods know she’s something to look at, at least,”
📕“It’s possible to abhor someone and still find them pleasant to look at. Sweet dreams, Princess.”
📕”All you have to do is say the word, Solveig. I’d see you burn this world to the ground and reign over its ashes a dark queen.”
📕“If I had a connection like that with someone, I would’ve tasted every inch of them by now.”
6.5/10 I was intrigued first by the prose and world which made me read on and on. And maybe i went into this too blind for when the romance came out of no where and just kinda steamrolled over everything else i was a bit annoyed. My main problem is the two main characters set out to solve a curse or sickness plaguing the lands and then get sidetracked over and over again by their own little banter and anger. Just felt kinda repetitive that they would try to find a solution for maybe 5 seconds then argue and bicker for 10 seconds and repeat to the point where they just acted dumbly over and over. And maybe im just on an unlucky streak but im kinda bored of the FMC being super edgy and strong and always using daggers to fight, like cant they use other weapons or not be so mean and pessimistic? Again that could just be an unlucky streak im on right now but oh well. I did like the powers and romance and the author does write love in a compelling way, and whenever the main characters dead partner is brought up you feel the love. So i liked that a-lot. Overall i will read the next book

This book is delicious in every way. I was beyond excited to receive this as a pre-release copy after following this author for ages and getting hyped up about this book-I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations, and I was thoroughly pleased to be proved wrong! Well defined characters, surrounded by brilliant world building and a clever magic system. This book was everything I love about fantasy, both main characters are stark opposites but in a way that plays together beautifully, theres plenty of action and romance, and the first chapter gets you hooked IMMEDIATELY. I cant wait for the rest of this series!
I came across the authors tiktok where she has described the book and I thought it sounded right up my street. I always struggle starting a new book immediately after finishing one of the same genre, and this was no different. It took me about a chapter to really get into it and get accustomed to the new characters and the new world, however once I did, I couldn't put it down & finished it within a day, which is pretty impressive considering it is the school holidays and I have 3 kids at home! Cannot wait for the next installment!
For what it’s worth,” she whispered, “I’m grateful that you tried, even if it was hopeless, and I’m sorry I wasn’t worthy of your promise.”
This book has me feeling all the feelings. I haven’t read a book like this in a VERY long time. Rebecca has outdone herself with this INCREDIBLE story. I am obsessed with these incredible characters and how beautiful this story is. I cannot wait to read more of this story.

Really enjoyed this book! For a debut novel it was well paced, the world building was immaculate and the story delved into many fantasy elements. The FMC is morally grey and fighting an internal battle of duty and living for herself. Whereas the MMC is from a rival kingdom, a beloved prince and captain.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and excited for the rest to be published! Highly recommend reading with the bonus of it being on KU
The story flowed so well, I couldn’t put it down! I have so many questions. Amazing twists and turns, the perfect romantic tension, Brilliant main characters and side characters
A great debut novel for this author! A really intricate world with themes of religious trauma, a morally grey FMC and great banter between her and the love interest, and that reminded me of the Powerless series. But her role as executioner and the darkness inside her gave me Throne of Glass vibes. A great fantasy read!
This book was a gripping read that I found I consumed in only a couple of days. I enjoyed how the main character was battling with her past and was morally grey, which lead to a beautiful romance between her and the sunshine male main character. The world was built beautifully and the story had me wishing for more. I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series when it comes out.
Really enjoyable read! It's so nice to have the reverse of the trope, I loved that the FMC was the morally grey one and the ML (I love him 🥹) was the sunshine character.
I have so many questions after reading this, i need to know what happens next! Now to wait for the next one. 🫠
