Death waits for no one…especially those who have cheated it.
Running away with her tail between her legs isn’t who Layla is, but it’s all she can do when she awakens on the brink of death. She must find her place in Rune’s kingdom, yet her journey of survival won’t be easy for her or Keir, as their path dredges up old memories—some better left forgotten.
Soon, the line between pleasure and pain blurs, wreaking havoc on more than just Layla and Rune’s hearts. When death rears its vicious head once more, Layla knows nothing will stop her from reclaiming what’s hers, even if it means confronting the Orken kingdom alone.
Can Layla rescue Rune before it’s too late? Or will death finally reap the seeds she has sown?
Rating- 4.5 stars (E-ARC) I would like to say a huge thank you to the author and BookFunnel for letting me have a e-arc of this book to give a honest review. I was so excited to be able to receive the ARC for this as I had previously reviewed the first one as an ARC. I am truly grateful and honoured to be able to have this oppournity once again.
Book 2 started right after the cliff-hanger from Book 1. With no time skip, it was lovely to be able to delve back into the world right from where we left off. It made it super easier to get back into the world and the characters. As like Book 1, Book 2 was fast paced and hard to put down. The chapters sucked you in and often left me on edge at times. The world building was also expanded on throughout the novel. I especially loved how different cultures were woven through (not spoiling anything).
I already was a huge fan of the main couple- Rune and Layla from the first book but this book really added onto them. I honestly love this couple so much. Rune really brings out a side in Layla that she did not know that she had and vice versa. It is really lovely to see the way in which both of them helped each other in different ways. *frantically searches a boyfriend like Rune* I have to admit that Rune is very whipped for her.
I also think Rune has made my list of top boyfriends in fantasy books because I could not get enough of him. There were times I got annoyed at him, times I did want to whack him on the head and even times where I felt so sorry for him. Rune is honestly such a great book boyfriend. I could not stop laughing at the scene when Rune battered the carriage.
It was also really nice to see more characters being introduced into the story. We finally got to meet some of Rune's friends/clan. I am honestly hoping that the characters can be explored in the next book because I would really like to learn more about their characters. I really liked Cleo too and would love to explore her further.
This book was worth the wait after waiting after Book 1 cliffhanger. It was refreshing to see a female main character that is nearly 30 (she is 28 years old) It really broke it away from a lot of the typical fantasy books out there that have young female characters. It is also nice to see a morally gray woman too who was fiercest and violent throughout the book. However, I did feel like the ending of the book felt a bit rushed. There was a lot of history which added to the world building but felt like it was rushed which made the ending feel abrupt. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book and can not wait for Book 3!
"Take our kingdom back. Be the savior of our people I know you can be"
After the ending of Blood Queen I couldn't wait to read this..... and it didn't disappoint!!
Broken Queen continues exactly where we left off and carries on with this dark and steamy read!
Caitlin is really showing what she can do, her writing is beautiful and her story telling is on point Blood Queen blew me away but Broken Queen left it standing, excited for more!
3.5 ⭐️ I received Broken Queen as an ARC so my opinions are my own.
The FMC Layla and her soul shard Keir run from her kingdom of Kusmal to our MMC Rune and his soul shard Betsy’s kingdom of Garo after who she thought was her advisor the wicked prince Brandt of Okren attempts to kill Layla and successfully takes over her kingdom. They must bring the kingdom of Garo together to get hers back.
I really did enjoy this book. A few weeks ago I learned the term potato chip book, it’s not the absolute greatest book but you can’t stop reading and enjoying it.
In the beginning Layla is still acting childish but she does have personal growth through the book.
The spice was just enough and didn’t over power the story.
I feel like a mention of a scar she had but never could remember how she received it earlier in the series at least the book would have pulled together the scene when Runes brother Max and his soul shard show back up a little better. I did like it bringing back memories of Laylas Past and how her and Rune came to be betrothed.
Rune is kidnapped by the Okren kingdom on his and Laylas wedding day. And the hits continue to come after. All of the events that happened following I believe were good, I just feel they were slammed together too quickly and were a little clunky.
I enjoyed the world building in this more than the first book and I would recommend this series for an easy read and a new take on familiars and royal power.

Her kingdom is left in shambles following a heart-shattering betrayal and more destruction lies in its wake. Layla must work to dispel the notorious reputation she’s allowed to be perpetuated and garner aid to take back what’s hers. But can a union based on secrets and unlikely alliances save them all?

Layla and Rune’s relationship is still fraught by apprehension but they cannot deny their feelings any longer. Throughout the series, we see them begin to build trust while sharing the darkest parts of themselves. They both fiercely protect those they care for and Layla is poised to exact her vengeance. I cannot wait to witness it! ⚔️
With a steamy enemies to lovers romance between a fierce and st@bby shadow mommy FMC and burn the world for her MMC, Broken Queen is a thrillingly sanguine sequel!
Huge thanks to the author for the ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
This is a sequel of Blood Queen and it begins right where the book one ended. Spice is spot on and well the last book’s ending was heartbreaking. This book will mend your heart. Rune and Layla’s bond is so good. So many secrets unveils and truth comes out. So many unthinkable things happens and the events brings Layla and Rune close even more than before. As they venture on a quest to stop the person who made her blood queen and stole everything that belongs to her, destiny becomes perilous. Loved the character of Keir. Loved the character development and character’s bond in this book. You can expect quest, mystery, secrets, spice and many more things in this book.
First I'll say, you absolutely must read the first book, Blood Queen, before this one, to fully grasp what is happening. (Also, because it's amazing).
In my review for Blood Queen, I mentioned that I wanted more spice, and I wanted Rune to be more dominant throughout the book (because I felt he was dominant at the start of the book and then not as much as the book went on), and this book definitely fixed both of those things!! I COULD NOT put this book down, and I have already begun asking the author for Book 3, because I LOVE this series!!!
That being said, I do like my MMCs to be dominant, but no one will top Layla in that realm. She is the most badass FMC you'll ever read about in a book, and I absolutely love her character. So her and Rune together... *chefs kiss*
Let's not forget about Kier!!! HILARIOUS. One part had me literally laughing out loud. His snark and sass is THE best!!!
Thank you so incredibly much to the wonderful author for sharing a BETA version of this book with me on the early days!!!
"You heard one side of the story. You should know there are always two sides of a tale and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle."
"Fight now, love. Show the world how resilient their Blood Queen is."
This book was … even better than what I was expecting!!! After the amazing novelty that was book one, I knew I needed to know more about Layla and Rune and the cliffhanger at the end of book one left me hanging desperately for more!! This time around we have even more twists and more turns in the narrative. And while the action gets more packed and we have even more fast paced scenes, the romance does not suffer for lack of presence or action itself. Rune and Layla are even more obsessed and possessive of one another and reading their interactions is always a pleasure !! I appreciated the intro of a new found family trope that lifted my spirits and made me laugh out loud multiple times. And Keir … he is always the best soul shard you can ever find !!! He is an absolute marvel !!! Some new characters meeting old ones. More allies and more enemies. More knives to the throat scenes. More tension and frustration. More fear of what can happen to these characters. More bonding scenes between two betrothed and more spicy scenes between them too !! Layla is such a complex character. Both extremely strong and resilient and doubtful of herself and her ability to rule properly her kingdom after the betrayal she has faced. Now we find out even more about her past, her family and her trauma and … I’m so in awe of her!! Of course, I’m not the only one. But then again, Rune has never had a problem in showering his appreciation for her!!! I loved this book so so much and after that ending … I truly think we’re in for a long and wild ride with these two !!! I can’t wait !!
“And in a world so fraught with death and destruction, I selfishly want you."
"Yes, I'm selfish because I would burn the world to keep you by my side."
“Be the queen I know so well, show them who the Blood Queen really is, mold them to your will."
The found family aspect made the book for me! I thought the last books had a cliffhanger, but that was nothing after this one! I’m so excited to the possibilities of having more of this world’s mythology and magic discovered in the next book! 🤞🏼
This series is a NA dark fantasy perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash with a FMC that brings Valkyrie vibe⚔️ Thank you so much to Caitlin Denman for giving me this ARC.

“My desire for your love has chained our souls to the same fate. I will protect you with all the powers and soldiers the gods have given me. So yes, I'm selfish. I'm selfish because I would burn this world to the ground to keep you by my side.”
The story in itself had me on the edge all the time, waiting for the next turn of events. I love that we get more from the world and how that was accomplished. It’s really fun to see all the difference through the FMC eyes. The last kingdom was not entirely how I imagined and it was a nice surprise. Can’t wait for more!
What I loved most about this was all the added characters and the found family aspect. The soul shards, that are like animal familiars, make up for some of the missing banter between the MCs together with the other added characters. This made the book for me! 😍 The throne scene is epic and had me laugh out loud, I had to read it twice just to be sure I read right 🤣🌶️
I still love Layla and Ryan, but had a bit of trouble with vibing with their chemistry in this book at times as well as the spicy scenes that felt very random. I did love that they showed different sides to themselves and that they both are vulnerable. Something is just missing for me. It may only be because of their situation and that they don’t have a love-hate relationship anymore, but I still would love a bit more of their chemistry and banter from book 1.
I had the privilege of reading the first in this series “Blood Queen” last year, and to say I was excited to read the second is the understatement of the year. The first book ended on a HUGE cliffhanger, naturally I couldn’t wait to see what happened. I re-read the last (5) chapters of Blood Queen as it had been awhile since I read the first one, and I was SO GLAD I did. I wouldn’t have been totally lost because Denman does a GREAT job of giving you a summary of what happened in the first book in the first few chapters of the second, but I was glad I re-read. I loved this book, the spice was great, (explicit without being gross), and the story moved along quickly, which is always good for a fantasy novel.
I won’t update characters this time, please read my review of Blood Queen for a list of the characters. I will say I enjoyed the addition of new characters from Rune's castle, specifically Aunt Cleo!
Tropes: Fantasy Romantasy Bloody/Gore (but not gross) Touch Him and D/e Found Family Arranged Marriage Quests
Some Highlights: - I loved loved loved the wedding scene. Rune does so many great things for Layla. She’s not a girly-girl, but he knows her well enough to know what she needs, not what she wants. The blade for the pocket in the wedding dress – chef’s kiss perfection!
- Could we get a novella about Cleo? She seems pretty great – I would love to know her story arc. Fingers crossed we get something in Book 3!
- The quest to save Rune seemed fast – they got to the castle and got Rune out so quickly. Suspiciously quickly. I’m hoping there will be fallout from that in book 3.
- The spice was also perfect. I only found myself skipping a few scenes, and only because I was eager to get on with the plot. But the spice was natural – it wasn’t forced bc the author was checking boxes. (Love this!) There was also a HIGH consent factor. Rune ALWAYS asked before doing anything spicy.
- The only miss for me was the wedding scene - it was BEAUTIFUL - the author does a fantastic job of describing the entire scene, but I was a little annoyed Rune was captured quite literally as they finished the ceremony. I would have loved a wedding feast scene. But it did move the story quickly, so beggars can't be choosers!
- Unfortunately there weren’t any chapters about what was happening in Layla’s home country until the VERY end. (Literally the last chapter!) I would have loved to know what was going on, I think it would have created more urgency with Layla to get things figured out with Rune, etc. But I have a feeling we’ll be back there in Book 3…I can’t wait!!
Thank you to Caitlin Denman and team for the ARC!

Broken Queen - Caitlin Denman 5+✨ Ever since I read Blood Queen I have been a huge fan of Caitlin, her writing is amazing and never fails to keep me on my toes. This is now the second time I have read this book, once as a BETA reader and now the complete ARC. I loved it both times! Starting where we left off on the HUGE cliffhanger in book 1 we get thrown straight into the action and I am here for it! Layla is still a badass, and Keir is still hilarious. We also learn some heartbreaking things about Laylas past in this book that in my case felt so close to home and had a huge impact. We also get to know Queen Cleo, and man do I love her! I won’t even try to explain how awesome she is, you will have to find out for yourself. As always the world building was great, the plot awesome and the suspense! I can’t wait to see how this story ends! One thing I have loved since book 1 is the fact that Layla is based on Elizabeth Bathory, who if you don’t know was rumoured to bathe in the blood of her young female servants to look young. And Rune is based on Vlad the Impaler. If you had a obsession with vampires like I did at a young age you should know who those people are and pick up on the small details in the story that weaves in the original lore of them. Now here is what this book gives you. 🩸Betrayal 🩸Magic 🩸Soulshard animals 🩸Arranged marriage 🩸Trauma 🩸Kidnapping 🩸Elizabeth Bathory meets Vlad the Impaler Now I would recommend you read Blood Queen if you haven’t already and then get your paws on Broken Queen as soon as it is out! Thank you to Caitlin for having me in your BETA readers team, and ARC team💕 I am leaving this review voluntarily 💕
Broken Queen jumps right back to where we left with a cliffhanger from Blood Queen. It's fast paced again and sucks you right in making it difficult to put down. This book was so much better than I expected! Book one left me wanting to know so much more about Layla and Rune's relationship and we finally got it! Layla works on trusting him and is slowly able to depend on him. The way Rune supports and believes in her is perfect. They both obsess over each other especially Rune.
Caitlin does not disappoint with more plot twists and turns either. There's even more intense action with more enemies discovered and of course we need some new allies to work with. There's more frustration, tension, and even fear of the unknown thrown into the mix. And I loved it all! Layla must now live up to her notorious reputation as the Blood Queen obviously.
I love Rune's aunt! She is exactly what Layla needs she meets her on the same sassy level and tells her what she truly needs to hear from one strong queen to the next. Keir is the best!! How can you not love him!? Layla is resilient and won't let her kingdom being taken away and left in shambles bring her down. She knows what's hers and she will get it back. Rune is right there beside Layla no matter what. Their relationship grew so much in Broken Queen as Layla works through some of the things in her past and her failures.
Broken Queen ends in another cliffhanger and oh my I can't wait to see what this duo does in book three! They are a team that you would not want to be on their bad side.
After the cliffhanger of book 1, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this sequel. Thankfully, it picks up right where book 1 ended, opening with Rune having saved Layla and the two of them on their way to Garo. One of my favorite things about sequels is seeing story worlds expand, and this sequel did not disappoint there. We live in Garo for this part of the story, and it's cool to see how Garo compares to Kusmal. There is also a section of the book where we travel to Okren, so by the end we have a good idea of what all three countries in the story world are like. The author did an excellent job making each country unique while also showing why Kusmal and Garo could be allies. The found family trope is strong as that alliance is brought forward.
Character wise, I enjoyed seeing new sides to both the FMC and the MMC. Layla, having lost everything, grapples with who she is now and who she is going to be. There's a lot of back and forth with her as she figures it out, but by the end I had the sense she had finally decided what kind of queen she wanted to be. Rune proves himself to be an excellent partner as he supports Layla, earning her trust and love. Seeing their relationship go from purely physical to a true partnership makes for a solid romance plot. This sequel also ups the spice A LOT.
We get quite a few new characters that I'm interested to follow in book 3, but going into too much detail would lead to spoilers. Suffice to say, the author has set it up to have a world-wide showdown in book 3.
I'm floored by how awful this book was. The first book had some missteps... Layla is an idiot. I could have forgiven most of what happened in book one, but the number of times she mentions feeling stupid or missing the obvious is astounding. The writing is trash. The number of times it's written in that the people really love her or see her as a queen seems forced. Theres no way people would suddenly change their opinions after she murders someone in front of them.... justified or not. The way these two get off on seeing one another kill people is disgusting and unbelievable. I've read dark romances where you can actually understand why characters develop certain kinks but this author just writes "she didn't know why that did something for her" ... lazy writing. You have to have some reason why the blood thing gets you excited. The general trying to take over is foreseeable. No twist there. Oh, the queen getting off on being pleasured what just poorly written as well. This book reads as though the author had a set of scenarios she wanted to write into a story and used MadLibs to fill in the gaps. Plus... I just have to put this out there.... Layla and Rune going off to have sex after his rescue was insensitive to their friends who were grieving the loss of their lover. The audacity.
I legit thought this was a completed duology. I see now that it's set up for a book 3 which I will not be completing. Keir and Marv are my favorite characters. Layla needs to give up the throne and just let Rune rule it all. Please don't let her lead anything.
This is the second book in a romantasy series about an orphaned queen who has now been betrayed by those she trusted most. Tropes include arranged marriage, morally gray MCs, stabby FMC, they’d burn the world for each other, feminine rage, she saves him and a shadow mommy. This is a darker romantasy with spice (and sarcasm) so please check content warnings.
The Lovely: I loved the characters, especially the addition of Aunt Cleo. She’s amusing in her own right, and is there for Layla immediately. Rune and Layla have their ups and downs as they try to figure out what their feelings are towards each other. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s sad, but I loved watching their journey together.
The Mundane: There wasn’t much world building, especially as it related to the magic system. I still don’t understand how the magic talents work. While I enjoyed the plot and tension, some was a bit predictable. Still an engaging and relatively quick read.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 3/5 Flames
Recommendation: I received an early review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Wow - a lot happens in this book for it only being 400 pages long. That’s what kept it interesting - something was always happening. I’m excited for the next book, which I suspect will be the final book of the series. If you like a sarcastic, badass FMC, a complicated and stabby relationship in a fantasy world, I think you would like this book.
Broken Queen is the second book of the Blood Queen Trilogy by Caitlin Denman. Thanks Caitlin for sending me this book as an eARC in exchange for in honest review. So lets go!!!!
I loved this book. Not totally surprising after I fell in love with Layla and Rune's story from the first page of the first book, but still it's nice that the second book is just as great as the first. The story starts just a little bit after the first one ended. While it was a while since I read the first but that didn't matter. Without a 'real' summary at the beginning you get enough handles to understand and remember where we are at.
I love the humor in the book. The witty banter between Layla and Rune. It brings some light into the story and helps with the character building for them both. They are talking a lot more with one another (which is a great improvement from the first one) and you can see their relationship grow because of that.
It takes some time for the first full on spicy scene to happen, ±25% into the story. Before, there was some hinting and forshadowing, but again fullon spice started from 25%. After that, the spice and storyline were intertwined. Normally for a book that is labeld as dark romance/fantasy I would think 25% is too long, but looking at the storyline I believe that it would have been unbelievable and destructive for the story would it have happened sooner.

- Touch him and die - Found Family - Arranged marriage - Stabby FMC - Spice - sequel -
This was a great sequel to book one in the series. It seamlessly started where book 1 left off and rolled right into new adventures and conflicts. We get shabby scenes. We get sexy scenes. The character growth and new bonds strengthening are not lacking. Layla and Rune are more possessive of each other than ever, and we love a sexy, possessive, growly MMC.
Book two in The Blood Queen series picks right up where we left off at the end of book one. Recovering from the betrayal of her advisor Brandt, Layla and Rune take off to his home kingdom of Garo where past traumas and new obstacles get in the way of their path towards taking back her kingdom. Though still a bit wary, Layla and Rune's relationship and trust in each other builds before he is snatched away from her in the middle of their wedding. She will let nothing get in the way of getting Rune back by her side, whether that be bandits, guards, or royals from rival kingdoms. Broken Queen ends at a natural point open to a third book to continue Layla's fight to take back her kingdom from the hands of rival Kingdom Okren.
Picking up from the cliffhanger in book 1 we see Layla and Keir fleeing from her kingdom after a gut-wrenching betrayal from the one person she trusted the most after the death of her parents. A lot of my feelings about that center around Layla allowing her grief to make her vulnerable and as a result she was easily manipulated and now she is going to have to work double time to reclaim her not only her reputation but her rightful Kingdom.
Much like book 1 Layla starts out annoying and childish, but she gradually grows into her own. Rune once believed to be her enemy is her greatest ally, unfortunately it took a betrayal and near-death experience to realize it. Although their relationship is fraught with tension and apprehension; they soon develop trust and understanding of one another and hence their union grows. Layla has some things to atone for and a lot of wrongs to make right. It is going to be an epic thing of beauty when Layla finally embarks upon her journey to the Kingdom of Kusmal to face off with her former advisor/guardian and reclaim what is rightfully hers.

Wow! This was one of the most fun stories I’ve read in a while! I’ve been anxiously waiting for this book to come out, and it exceeded my expectations! This book perfectly filled the romantasy void I had! There’s romance, there’s action, there’s betrayal, there’s tension. No notes.
Without giving anything away, this was a well-paced sequel that was able to deliver on vivid world building as well as having enough action to keep you completely engaged (but not overwhelmed). We are introduced to a huge array of new characters that make Esfer truly come to life in a completely different way than we experienced in the first book! Given where we left off in book one, I was anticipating this story to be a lot more centered on the situation with Brandt, but the fact that we had all the other conflicts that arose made it so much more fascinating and really connected all of the kingdoms of Esfer.
In terms of a fantasy novel, this book didn't bring about any new or earth-shattering concepts, but I LOVED this sequel and genuinely can’t wait for the next installment!!
This is the 2nd book in the Blood Queen series, and picks up exactly where it left off in book 1. Even with everything that goes on throughout the book and the troubles that Layla and Rune have to get through, it was so refreshing for Layla to find people she could actually trust🥹 Aunt Cleo is the aunt everyone deserves. I absolutely adore her🖤
Layla and Rune's relationship developed so beautifully in this book. They're so good for each other, and I just love them. From their "hate-flirting" to their super sweet moments😍
I wasn't paying attention to my percentage towards the end of the book, so "the end" came at a complete shock and I'm going to need the next book ASAP👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you SO much to the author for the gifted copy!!🥹🖤
With Book 1 ending on a MASSIVE cliffhanger, I was so glad that Book 2 jumps right back into the story with no time skip.
The great things we get: - Action packed scenes, - Heart warming interactions, - Spiiiicee - Plenty of character development - Even more world building
My only cons: - I do wish that the story was slowed down as certain elements did feel rushed and I feel like they deserved more time - The FMC doesn’t come across as old as she is supposed to be (28) and it was sometimes hard to keep up with her actions. She definitely acts like she’s a lot younger
Overall I enjoyed this book and am excited to see how the story continues.
Broken Queen was definitely a fun read full of twists and turns. If you’re a big fan of a fast-paced, easy read with just the right amount of spice then this book is for you!

What a fantastic story this was!! I am amazed by the turns it took, which gave me something new to focus on and engage with. From the start, it took a fast pace, and it never wavered from its fabulousness. Caitlin definitely made me fall in love with the story again, and I will be looking forward to the next book.
The twists took my breath away at times, and I literally devoured the book. In the last book, I wanted Rune’s POV, but in this one, I didn’t feel the need for it. Although I would have been happy if it was there, I am not complaining at all. I am satisfied, even ecstatic, with how everything moved and happened.
The character development of Layla is just wow. The way she grows in the story is admirable. The title might be Broken Queen, but with the help of Rune, this Queen becomes whole again and will be a nightmare for all the enemies. She is my favourite character from the book. Her soul-shard Keir is one entertaining creature. It's a must-read.
📝Favorite Quote(s): -"wrapping around his throat and tugging the man so he was mere inches from his face. “You will respect my wife.” (WHO DOESNT LOVE A PROTECTIVE A** MAN 🤭👑)
-"That bastard snitched on me didn’t he?" (Keir had me laughing with his sass in this book 🤣🐦⬛)
5 star book all around!!!!! The plot is AMAZING and the twists and turns had me staying up extra late reading this book cause I needed ANSWERS lol.
There was some spice in there and ALOT of sass. 🤣🙌
Keir is one of my favorites! Cause who DOESNT love a sassy soul shard lol
Rune and Layla are definitely an AMAZING team/couple. I LOVE THEM!!!!
The cliffhanger was good im DEFINITELY ready for the next book 🤣 I NEED more what can I say!
This is definitely one of my favorite fantasy series!!! Yall definitely need to check out this Author✨️
This series got a glow-up with this second book. We finally see the consequences of Layla fully trusting her confidante, who is a foreign prince from a rival kingdom. But we also get to see more of her relationship with Rune. I really liked reading their new dynamic after they flee Kusmal, Rune is now home and Layla is the foreigner. In a way, this gives Rune more space to develop than when we meet him in book one.
We also have new characters. Reading about the azul clan and Rune’s family was very much needed in this series. I have aso been enjoying some representation I didn’t see before.
As for the plot, we keep seeing more and more complications but even with that it never stalled and we got a very nice pace when it comes to the action and confrontations we see in the book. I look forward to reading what’s next for Layla and Rune.

This book is so intense and kicks straight off into drama and action. I loved how caring and devoted Rune was to Layla, he will do anything to protect her. Although Brandt is still a threat, this story moves away from his involvement for now with new enemies to focus on. There are some dark and traumatic revelations, despicable new characters, and this leads to some violent justice. Rune's aunt Cleo is the best, she is sassy, fierce and shocking, I loved the bond she had with Rune in treating him like a son, and how she bonded with Layla in causing mischief and chaos. I love how Layla gets possessive of Rune and isn't afraid to get violent to stake her claim too. Felix was a fun new character, still not sure on his motivations but he certainly likes to stir up drama. There are some great twists in this, and yet again another big cliffhanger. Can't wait for book 3 already.
I had such a great time with book one but sadly the second installment in this series is severely lacking. It felt very underdeveloped and rushed and boy did it have a huge case of second book syndrome. We get one hint at what's coming next in the plot at the very beginning of the book and it is only referenced again at the very end. I wouldn't have even been mad if the rest of the book had been even slightly better or remotely entertaining but sadly it was not.
There is no depth to the characters and they could not act consistently to save their lives. Most of the book is just the FMC acting as if she is better than everyone else or having a complete breakdown. Some of the scenes were so ridiculous and cringe worthy that I just had to put the book down.
Honestly, I wish I had DNF'd.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I didn’t think it was possible but the second book is even better!!
The story continues after a heart wrenching cliffhanger and i have never been more thankful that i was able to read it instantly after book one because OMG!
I feel like the FMC just gets more and more badass each page she is just incredible! I mean FMC saves the MMC heck yass woman power i love it!! Even tho more challenges came her way she keps going and didn’t give up and she grew even more into the amazing woman she is now!
Part two contains a dangerous quest and the aftermath of a horrible betrayal and it was incredibly addictive! I cannot wait to see more this series is absolutely in my top 10 series and i am OBSESSED!

I am in love with this series so far. I crushed both books in 2 days and did not want to put it down! Highly enjoyed how badass Layla is and Rune is just awesome, yes he dumb sometimes but they both make mistakes that they have to get through. Which makes the banter between them lovely. I swear the more Layla fights him on anything the more he falls in love with her, it’s great!
OMG I LOVE Rune’s Aunt, his Queen! She is fucking hilarious and the throne room scene when she is meeting with her advisors is the best thing I have read in a long time. I was dying, like hardcore laughing my ass off! Absolutely love the balls on this woman!
Honestly cannot wait to see where this series goes as I have highly enjoyed the ride so far! Thank you Caitlin Denman for letting me experience this gem of a book!
I really struggled with this book. Everything is just too easy for the main character. She instantly bonds with everyone, and they all worship the ground she walks on. And then there are the repetitive scenarios in which Layla fights and kills. I mean, I know she is the Blood Queen, but it's just overkill. Not to mention that she kills some rare wolf, making her the true leader of Rune's country, and there's no tension or confusion about it, just blind and stupid acceptance. By the end, I only really cared about her soul shard. I will say that I hope this story ends well, and the story premise is solid and interesting. Sadly, I think the execution could be better. I definitely see potential in the writing, and I hope there is better progression of the story. *I received an ARC of this book from the author, and I am giving an honest review."

I was fortunate enough to receive an arc copy of Caitlin Denman’s Broken Queen in exchange for an honest review. This sequel picks up where the Blood Queen’s cliffhanger left off. Layla and Rune are on the run after Brandt’s betrayal. They must recover and regroup before she can get her kingdom back. This fantasy is as exciting as the first book in fact possibly more. It also is a bit spicier. I love Layla and Rune’s relationship and how they fight for each other. Also how they help each other see the best in themselves and become each other’s family. This book introduces many new characters and even some new villains. I anxiously await the next book in this series and recommend others read it too.
