Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if kids could be superheroes and could use their talents to help save the world? As Lucy McDigit uses her extraordinary mathematical abilities to solve the world's problems, she learns that even the best superheroes need a little help from time to time.
Jennifer Bowers has been working in public education for over thirty years, the majority of which have been in gifted education. She holds a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and an add-on certification in Gifted Education. She has published numerous curriculum units in her school system and has instructed gifted endorsement classes for teachers. She lives in Georgia with her three children and their cats. Her hope in writing books for children is to highlight (in a fun way) the unique abilities and the unique challenges that children may face. She is extremely grateful for the opportunity to collaborate on projects with her daughter, Abby, as her illustrator. She has also published a personal memoir about her family's journey during her husband's cancer diagnosis to bring comfort to those going through a similar situation.
Numero Uno and the Sidekick is a smart, affirming book that truly understands gifted children.
It thoughtfully addresses common gifted traits like perfectionism, overwhelm, and the pressure to always be “right,” while reinforcing the importance of collaboration and asking for help. The pairing of logical thinking with creative, out-of-the-box problem-solving is especially well done and sends a powerful message to young readers.
Engaging, accessible, and deeply validating, this book is an excellent introduction to a series that celebrates both the strengths and challenges of gifted kids.
I love how this book approaches exceptional ability! It shows that we all have strengths and at the same time doubts. This little girl learns how to use her exceptionality to help others and, at the same time, that it's normal to ask for help when you feel overwhelmed. Fun book to read a little each night to end the betime routine and a good launchpad for talking with your child about their strengths, hopes, and fears in a fun way. Thank you, Lucy McDigit for being so exceptional and so real!
This book is such a fun and clever story about using math, making friends, and teamwork! The characters are smart and I loved the artwork! I would definitely recommend this book.
