I was supposed to be partying with a bunch of celebrities in paradise this week, okay?
But then I made one teeny, tiny error in judgement before leaving New York, and suddenly the paparazzi expected me to give a command performance as “the other man” in their straight celebrity “outing” of the week.
Um, no, precious. So much no.
Instead, I did what any self-respecting, secret-keeping man would do in that situation: I cancelled my trip and fled New York to hide out in the last place anyone would look for me--a weird little Florida island where nothing exciting ever happened.
Or at least it didn’t… until I arrived.
Now I find myself shacked up with my fake boyfriend Beale Goodman, Whispering Key’s most adorable, most enormous, most virginal cinnamon roll—a guy who rescues feral cats, believes in soulmates, and talks about happiness like it’s free for the taking.
A guy who nearly convinces me, with every smile and kiss, that it is.
Stranger still? I find myself falling for the people on the island. Fitting in, instead of sticking out. Making, you know… friends. And for the first time ever, I think I’ve found something I want to run to, rather than from...
As long as I can keep my secrets from catching up with me.
I skipped the first Whispering Key book for some reason, but On the Run works fine as a standalone. I wasn't expecting much more than an easy read, but this story is surprisingly funny, romantic, and tender.
When I say funny, I mean I laughed out loud multiple times, almost falling off my elliptical at one point. Toby (aka, Trey) is a sassy little whippet with a smart mouth. After the debacle at the airport, I was sure Toby would annoy me, but he didn't. I wish he'd been honest with Beale from the beginning, but Toby has good intentions.
I fell in love with Beale on sight. He's this giant (six and a half feet to be precise) teddy bear who does yoga and talks about chakras. He even worries about his big .... errr ... member, because guys have been daunted by it in the past. Of course, Beale hasn't met Toby, who positively salivates when he sees Beale naked.
This story is a hot little number, all the sexier because Beale is an honest to god virgin at age 28. No way, you say. YES WAY. And Toby is all over that.
I loved the town of Whispering Key and all the well-meaning residents, especially Littlejohn who takes Toby/Trey right under his wing. Indeed, Littlejohn is instrumental in the two men getting together, first for fake, later for real.
I enjoyed the hell out of this story, including the Murder Cat, horoscopes, Dear Aunt Hagatha letters, and ridiculously sexy swimming lessons.
Beale and Toby believe the Universe brought them together; they are a most unlikely couple (with Toby being nothing like the introverted, serene soulmate Beale had always imagined for himself), but I can't say I disagree.
I don’t really know how to explain my feelings about this one, I started adoring it and then I got to about 45% and one chapter I was loving it and the next one I was really annoyed with it and it stayed that way for a while. But thats on me, i’m so grumpy and picky lately that one little thing that bothers me makes me irrationally angry. Then I got to 75% and I was really mad about what happened because it didn’t need to happen, if only they just talked it would have fixed everything. BUT then I got to 80% and this onwards just redeemed the entire book for me, you could feel all the love these two had for each other and they fought for each other like fucking crazy. I adored how Beale wanted to make the world perfect for Toby. I loved how Toby realized his wrong doings. I loved how they acted, it was so typically them, I loved how they stayed true to who they are even in that situation. And I loved how Toby started fighting for what he wants (something he had never done before then). It was just the sweetest thing. I adored the last 20% of this book so much.
Which is why i’m still giving this 4 stars, because in the end, my enjoyment was bigger than the things that annoyed me. Also I had so much fun reading it and I kept wanting to read more and that barely happens to me now a day (it’s this damn year I swear) and I think the fact that it made me laugh out loud so much and kept me excited makes it deserve that rating too.
I loved Off Plan, book one of this series and I was very excited to read Beale’s story, he is such a fascinating character. And although it wasn’t my favourite, I still really enjoyed it.
It’s a simple premise. Beale is a simple man, all he has ever wanted was to find his soul mate, he wants to find the one man for him and stay with him forever. And Toby is afraid of commitment and only does casual sex, because he has been rejected before and doesn’t want it to happen again. Some shit happens to Toby (who lives in New-York) and he flees and goes to the Key to visit his best friend Mason (one of the MC from book one).
A little over two weeks ago, I’d found myself on Whispering Key with none of the things I valued in the world—no money, no contacts, no best friend, no privacy—and instead I’d gotten Beale… And if I had the chance, I’d trade it all again and consider it a fucking bargain.
Side note, I absolutely adore the town of Whispering Key. I love how detailed it is and how it feels like a real town. When I read these books, I just feel like i’m in Florida hanging out with these guys. I fucking adore this town and the people living in it.
The things I loved the most about the book: - Their first meeting, that was so damn hilarious, I loved it. - Beale, he’s the most previous character, I adore him so so much. - Toby and Beale together, they were so damn good together and they just fit. - The humour in this book, I laughed out loud so many times, I had such a great time reading. - The town of Whispering Key and the people in it and how quickly they accepted Toby as one of them, I loved how they all made him welcome and how he tried so hard to be one of them. - As previously mentioned, the last 20%, how much they fought for each other, how they both understood that to get what you want, you have to fight for it and that both of them fought equally and it wasn’t one sided, I loved that so much. - I was so happy when they both started fighting for each other, it was so sweet, I loved it. - That epilogue, it was so damn sweet and i’m so excited to read more about this lovely town and its people.
The things that I enjoyed less: - Small complaint but god there was so many pop culture references in this and although I understood most of them, I still didn’t enjoy them. I’m sure some people will enjoy the references but they always annoy me, probably because I have no clue what we are talking about most of the time. And there was so many of them, I just thought it was a bit overdone by the end. - I don’t like when one of the MC keeps a secret for the entire book, it just always annoys me. I just prefer when my MCs have perfect communication and tell each other everything. But I understand why it was kept a secret, because it was explained to me clearly so then I got annoyed by everyone being mad that a secret was kept when it made sense why it was kept a secret. I just thought that damn secret was made such a bigger deal than it had to be. - The lack of communication, as previously mentioned, it always irritates me when people just don’t talk and take the hard route instead, just talk to each other dammit. - I really don’t enjoy the plot devise of the couple breaking up at 75%. And in this one, it was so damn dramatic for nothing, there was so much fabricated drama and it really didn’t need to happen. They could have stayed together and just talk, it was such a trivial issue to break up over.
But in the end, even with all of those things annoying me, I had so much fun reading this book and I loved Toby and Beale together and thats all that matters to me.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange of my honest opinion
This was super cute and classic May Archer. Light and fun. The town of Whispering Key is becoming as nosy and quirky as O’Leary though and since O’Leary is already my maximum level of quirk, I’m hoping this town doesn’t go past that. Lots of insta lust which isn’t my favorite but is not a deal breaker. Insta lust can be realistic. There was also not quite insta love but definitely fast love which isn’t my thing but I know this going into May’s books so that’s on me. This one seemed extra fast though. A week? Anyhow, despite that, I was charmed and enjoyed it for the most part. I struggled with the ending which is why I’m wavering between three and four stars. I’ll be leaving it unrated while I ponder and will come back to rate later and add some more to this review if I feel so inclined. 😂🤷🏻♀️
**There is currently a free bonus novella on prolific works that I found adorable. It takes place at the same time as most of this book. Basically it’s Mason and Fenn from book one going to visit my favorite O’Leary couple, Constantine and Micah in O’Leary. Full of glitter and unicorns. 🦄
I didn’t think I would love this book more than I liked Off Plan but here we are! This series is soooo good! Toby and Beale were so sweet, sexy and funny. I loved them together and that they were each other’s safety and protectors at the same time. And the banter? It was maybe the best part of their relationship. Did I mention this book was soooo funny? I was chuckling and cackling throughout my whole read 😂 I love this series and characters, I’m sad there’s only one book left 🥺 Hopefully May Archer writes more books for this series 💕
I didn’t like Toby at first. Beale was a sweetheart. I enjoyed their moments alone— The sexy and non-sexy moments alike. But there wasn’t much to this book and the final conflict was conflagrated out of proportion to bring drama into the story.
But it was fun enough. Good narration by Michael Dean.
A wonderful follow up to the first book in this series, a sort-of, kinda spin-off from Archer's Love in O'Leary series.
This time, the spotlight is on Beale, who is very much a gentle giant, and Toby, Mason's best friend who lives in New York.
After Toby is tricked into looking like he was giving famous rockstar a blowjob (that rockstar being Jay, Beale's brother Rafe's ex brother-in-law) for a picture to sell to the tabloids for money by a guy Toby knew, Toby knows it's only a matter of time before they figure out who he is, and he doesn't want that, so he basically goes into hiding on Whispering Key, intending to see Mason to get advice on what he should do to handle this situation.
Only when he gets there, Mason isn't there, he's in O'Leary with Fenn for a week. But a well-meaning but nosy Whispering Key resident brings him to Mason's guest house - as the main house is being worked on - except that Beale is staying there also because Beale's father Big Rafe is also getting his place worked on and is staying with Rafe with his fiance Gloria while Beale stays in Mason and Fenn's guest house while they're away.
Queue these two meeting in, ahem, interesting - i.e. one or both might be naked ;) - circumstances.
The attraction is immediate. But Toby doesn't do relationships and Beale has been holding out for his Soulmate, who he already has an idea of what he'll be like in his head and to him, Toby doesn't fit that.
But Toby is trying to hide out and doesn't want anyone to know who he is, lest they call the paps and such, and when he and Beale are caught in an accidentally compromising position, Toby basically becomes Beale's "fake soulmate" although there isn't anything remotely fake about the connection between them.
I enjoyed this so much. My only frustration, and reason for taking .5 off, during this book, was the not talking thing. It's somewhat understandable why Toby doesn't say anything at first, and this does only take place over about a week for the main action of their romance, but when
Then they don't fully communicate once it's out there and that was frustrating too. Although I get them needing time to get things settled and to get together for good. But i just felt frustrated for a small portion of this book.
Other than that though, this was awesome and I loved it. Toby was hilarious but also kind and sweet underneath the snark and quips, and Beale was a sweetheart from the beginning, and also not at all an idiot or anything like that, so it was good to see him stand up for himself, and for Toby to stand up for him.
Despite their differences, they also understood each other better than anyone, and connected so easily, so well, that it was very believable that only after a week, that they had fallen in love. I was so excited for Beale's book and this did not disappoint.
Now...I'm confused about who Jay will be the LI for. Because since book one, and for a good portion of this book, I thought Young Rafe and Jay would be LI, some that slightly forbidden but totally HOT angle of ex-brother-in-laws, and Rage being angry at Jay but secretly wanting him and them not being able to handle the heat between them and I was building this all up in my head already! Lol.
But then Gage, the youngest Goodman brother, seemed kinda interested in Jay as well? I kinda got that vibe off him, and with him going off to fetch Jay, who is in hiding since his outing, that kinda shows possibly some feelings there? And by the end of this they say that these two somehow ended up on a road trip and were in Wyoming for some reason, so...maybe it's Gage and Jay?? But...I was all gunned up and ready for Rafe and Jay lol. WHICH, could still happen! But also might not...so I dunno which brother it's gonna be until we get the blurb for the next book....guess we'll see.
I'm excited to find out. Will be interesting to see which couple it will be...Rafe and Jay, or Gage and Jay.
Dear Aunt Hagatha. There’s this completely ridiculous island in Florida, called Whispering Key. And I think Beale and Toby are my favourite couple there now.
When I read the previous book, I couldn’t really imagine how Beale, the shy gentle giant who’s attuned to the universe and believes in spiritual energy, and Toby, the snarky, flirty OTT New Yorker with a penchant for expensive clothes, could end up together. And how they’ll completely steal my heart. But here you go: Toby, Mason’s best friend, has to flee New York after being photographed in a compromising position with a rock star. Toby, who -unbeknownst by almost everybody- is the author behind the “Aunt Hagatha”, a very popular adviser column. And he flees to Whispering Key, hoping to be able to hide there until the scandal dies down. There he meets Beale, and against all odds, they’re attracted to each other. Beale, who at first fights the attraction because he’s been waiting for his soul mate for his entire life, and Toby as far from the way he’d envisioned his soul mate to be as it gets.
I can’t really describe why I loved them so much together. They’re entire relationship is so very sweet, and despite being so different for each other, together, they’re… just perfect. To quote Beale:
”I met a man who challenged me from the first minute we met. He annoys me. He exasperates me. He makes me nervous. He lights me up. And he’s not perfect, just like I’m not perfect, but that just means we fit perfectly. We make each other better.”
And come on. Even the most cold hearted amongst us must admit that that’s the sweetest thing you’ve read today, right?
I laughed, I cried (literally), and I swooned. And I can’t rate it with anything less than 5 buttery sweet melting stars 😍
I cried for three whole chapters. I loved it. Especially since Toby reminded me of myself a little. Beale and Toby were the perfect couple. And the whole Hagatha thing was a nice touch. It was also quite funny. Not in the laugh out loud way but in the they were so ridiculous I keep showing them to other people.
I liked this so much more than book one in the series. Beale was such a sweetheart and somehow Toby was his perfect match even though they were crazy different.
And Whispering Key with all it's crazy characters are growing on me just like O'Leary did.
I'm really enjoying this series. It's more toned down than O'Leary as far as the townsfolk go - still fun and unique but not as annoyingly in your face.
Both Beale and Toby/Trey were fun, distinct characters, who couldn't be more opposite, and I loved everything about their relationship.
Back in Whispering Key we get Beale's story, the character I really liked in the first book and was hoping his will be a really strong, powerful love story.
I was pretty disappointed, to tell you the truth.
💙 Beale was 28 and almost perfect. A wonderful, serious, steady cinnamon roll with washboard abs. 🔥
💚 Toby was 35, a New Yorker writing a famous column, who got entangled in a media scandal with Jay, Young Rafe's ex brother in law and escaped to Whispering Key.
💜 The dialogue between MC's was subpar to one I would expect to read in Beale's book, I had almost no sense of who Toby was, I felt like he was a bit pretentious and I felt no depth.
🧡 This was insta-love, so the whole falling in love happened in a week's time and it just somehow wasn't believable.
❤️ Beale was a virgin and since this was his first time for everything, I expected to read about it, but the spice was scarce, so that was pretty disappointing.
💛 I was surprised at Mason's and Toby's friendship, these two are best friends, yet I felt like Toby wasn't really wellcome? Could be just me, but I did not expect that energy, especially since they haven't talked in a while.
💰 What happened with the treasure? We find out some of the men are building their houses, but I was expecting a run down of all the things that are changing in Whispering Key because of this new money. Are they millionaires? What's different in town?
I don't mind internal monologues or humour, but when it was very original in Off Plan, I wasn't sold here. Maybe because I wasn't invested in Toby as much, I think his character lacked depth and there simply weren't enough one-on-one events for my taste to really feel them as a couple.
The ending was sweet, but again, felt bland for me because I couldn't get into the story itself.
I'm looking forward to Young Rafe's book, should be interesting.
If someone asked me to name my favorite author it would be impossible. It’s just that I love to read and I also love audiobooks. When you pit May Archer and Michael Dean together it’s a perfect combination for me. I love the way May writes, and I love listening to Michael read to me.
Obviously, I loved this book. I certainly didn’t love Toby at first. After the first chapter I worried that I might not like this book. Toby, the hard as nails middle aged queen, turned into someone I cared about and rooted for his happiness.
Beale was the perfect hero from the start. I loved everything about him. He’s just a big bear looking for his soulmate.
I expected the problems and the breakup because I knew Toby keeping his secret was going to explode in his face eventually. I still loved it.
I loved book 1, but this one bored me 😖 Both MCs were fun to read... But... 😓
The secondary cast, so cute in book1, was nearly gone in this first half of the second book. There was no story to tell apart from the instant attraction the Main Couple felt. Whispering Key wasn't present enough... I hope Book3 is better for me.
I am so happy with how much I absolutely loved this story! Just picked it up randomly, didn’t read the blurb and it turned out great! This book was hilarious. I honestly have no idea how many times I laughed out loud. The banter between these two and the sharp wit that Toby has was perfect! And to top it all off I surprised myself by getting so emotional at one point in their story I physically hurt for them and even cried (which doesn’t happen often)!
Toby was the sassiest character I’ve read in a long time! I completely understood all of his actions and some of his inner thoughts made me hurt so much for him! I’m so happy he found his home on Whispering Key with Beale!
Beale was an interesting character that as first I wasn’t sure I was going to like but he grew on me with every chapter that I read! Especially when he started to open his eyes to what the Universe was bringing him!
These two are such perfect characters for each other! Their HEA was super cute! I haven’t read the first book in the series but I had no trouble following along at all. I will definitely be checking out more by this author in the future!
i have never hated a character for a long time as much as i hated toby/trey. this is fictional but if he exists in real life. id avoid him. hate giving up on books. so close to dropping this. im just curious bc ppl seem to like it. and i dont get the appeal. the author's characters are just his old character's kinda combined? and just on a different setting. idk maybe its just me. i tried finishing this just for the sake of finishing it. i was rooting for mcs to break up and i cant believe it gets worse. wtf. beale deserves better than toby. god toby is annoying as hell. also maybe may archer books dont work for me. im starting to think that way..the only book i enjoyed of hers is fools. anyway this is ranting but this book annoyed me. i legit want to forget i read this.
I've been having a streak of bad luck with books. I was starting to question myself, if I was maybe being too something. That I was the reason I wasn't connecting to these books.
I found out yesterday that this was out and knew this just might be the cure I needed. I fell in love with May Archer's O'Leary and its inhabitants earlier this year, I followed Mason's journey to Whispering Key in August and eagerly awaited the next installment.
Nevertheless I doubted and questioned myself. Was I going to ruin this series for myself? Because the holidays were hard? Because I've been in a funk? Because 2020 has been 2020? Turns out I needn't have worried.
Beale was as adorable as I remembered, and Toby surprised the heck out of me. I found myself creating a space for him in my heart right next to one Constantine Ross. This book was such a gift. It proved to me I haven't lost the ability to connect to characters and stories. Toby had me clenching my jaw and tearing up right alongside him in deep understanding and sympathy.
I can't wait for the next chapter of this story. Hats off to May Archer for managing, I can already tell, to recreate the magic of O'Leary in Whispering Key.
I'm not quite sure how to rate this one. It was going to be a 3-star read for me, but somewhere towards the end I had to rethink that. I'm happy that Beale got his own book, and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw who the other MC was. I didn't entirely love this, though. The whole 'crazy small town' thing tends to be a bit too much in Archer's books. This was pretty silly in parts, though probably slightly less so than the 1st book. Also I didn't really end up completely "feeling" Toby's character... there was just something missing for me. I was afraid that Beale would end up just being this gigantic block of cinnamon roll with no depth, but, there was enough for me. I enjoyed their chemistry (although there were some slightly cringey dynamics going on in the beginning...). Somewhere along the way my attention wandered a bit, but towards the end the story picked up again, so overall this was an entertaining, sweet and sexy read.
May Archer does it again. Another wonderful small town romance that brings all the smiles and all the feels.
Toby needs to go into hiding to avoid outing a celebrity and unmasked his own hiding occupation as a gossip columnist. His only option is to turn to his only and best friend Mason at his new home in the small town of Whispering Key Florida. Except Mason isn't home and his house sitting is a handsome horoscope believing giant of a man Beale. Next thing he knows his name becomes Trey, he's Beale's fake boyfriend and the lies keep piling up. To make the situation even more complicated Toby and Beale find themselves attracted to each other and decide to give in and make the best of the situation. But when Toby's NYC troubles catch up to him can they make their fake relationship real or will it all fall apart? "I felt ultra powerful and helpless at the same time because he was so goddamn beautiful and I want him endlessly."
I fell a little bit in love with Beale when he was introduced in the first Whispering Keys book but I fell all the way right from the start of this one. He is the optimal good guy. He believes that he will find his soulmate, embraces the fact that he's a Virgo and authentically kind. Although Toby does not appear to fit into Beale's idea of who his soulmate should be, he ends up being so much more , a defender and a confidant. Beale takes to his physical relationship with Toby like a plover to water (haha yes, I'm quite funny) because there is so much feeling, even if they aren't able to identify it at first, with every kiss, touch and more. Toby helps Beale tap into a side of himself that he never knew existed and that side totally excelled at dirty talk 😉 "And Beale laughed as he kissed me. God, every time he touched me was better than the time before, which was amazing and scary and... really amazingly scary."
Toby is a mess. A well put together and high functioning mess but a mess nonetheless and I found him utterly entertaining. He was over the top but genuine and my heart swelled when he would stand up to Beale when others underestimated him or talked down to him. However, Toby struggles to reel in his brash attitude towards sex with Beale and I feel he pushed to the point that I felt like he was pressuring Beale and that didn't sit right with me. But Toby redeems himself by trying to make the situation better for Beale even if it breaks his heart in the meantime. When Toby's tough outer shell of inappropriate humor and avoidance breaks you can't help but want to hug him. "Toby Elford was a snarky little rain cloud of a human, and it shouldn't have been possible for him to light up my days, but he did."
On the Run is a great addition to a fantastic series. The town of Whispering Key is a small town with lovable, slightly crazy townspeople, and ridiculous situations including murder cats and murder pools that are bound to make you chuckle. They quickly embraced Toby as one of their own and was there for him even when he didn't feel he deserved it. This story had some pretty significant insta-lust leading to love vibes but I just couldn't stop myself from falling in love with Beale and Toby.
Gaaaahhh I loved this book! Beale was undoubtedly the standout secondary character in book one, and I’m so, so glad his character was the same here. I love giant teddy bear characters like him, with such comfort in who they are. Toby was equally lovable, being another type of character I adore. He was prickly on the outside but truly sweet and kind, and he was the fun type of dramatic. They meshed together so well, I read this all in one go without a break. The chemistry and warmth and love was wonderful.
Unlike book one, none of the side characters drove me insane this time. The humour was wonderful, and all of Beale and Toby’s dialogue was an absolute treat. I found this book far funnier than book one, which already had good humour.
I especially liked Rafe and Gabe in this as secondary characters.
I could not give this book five stars simply because of the 70% drama and everything that comes with it that I absolutely hate, but it was near perfect. The ending was everything I could’ve wanted it to be, with both characters attempting to win the other back, so nothing was one sided.
Beale was absolutely adorable, and Toby just shined a light on him. I really loved them. This is my favourite book by this author, and I think it will be a reread in the future :)
4.5 stars This book surprised me. It starts out over-the-top and full of shenanigans with poor Toby's whole life blowing up and him running away to Florida to hide with his best friend, but finds even more problems and craziness there. It is funny, silly, and Toby is a hot mess.
Enter, Beale, the incredibly tall, adorable, sweet, zen, virgin looking for his soul mate. These two play off of each other so well. Beale is Mr. Positive Energy and Toby is Mr. Doom and Gloom. It's fun and crazy and then their chemistry heats up. A little fling should not hurt anything. But along the way it also becomes emotional, sweet, and swoony. They are the most unlikely pair but fit together so well. They truly see each other for who they are and the potential of what they can be. But there are some ommissions and secrets waiting to cause issues and they live their lives in different places and in different ways. What happens when the truth comes out?
I did not read the first book but this read fine as a stand-alone. I totally adored Toby and Beale and got completely emotionally invested in them. The cooky characters of Whispering Key added humor and heart to this story. I am hoping to see books for Beale's brothers.
I can never wait too long to read May's books. I have a soft-spot for OTT, snarky floof. This was perfect for me in that there just aren't enough that hit the spot for me in that way and the authors that do can only write so fast and the timing was perfect. I love serious and hurt/comfort and political intrigue, etc. but if I could read this type of idyllic sweetness and light all day, every day I would. OK, that's not true, I would probably get sick of it kind of quickly but it's so nice when it does come out.
Beale was the PERFECT marshmallow and he definitely needed someone like Toby to give him the confidence he needed. Toby needed someone to see through his prickly, sarcastic exterior to show him that he is the good person who is also his alter-ego. I adored them together and it was a lovely story as well. For me though, their relationship was all that really mattered and everything else took a backseat.
I will say Mason ticked me right the hell off towards the end though. I don't think enough ass-kissing was done on his part!
Although this book started with the over-the-top comedy that I rarely enjoy in my books, I stuck with it and gave Toby & Beale the benefit of the doubt. And I am glad I did, because they eventually caught me in the feels.
