The Connoisseur’s Journey

It’s funny about connoisseurship, regardless of the specialty concerned—the demarcation line is stark: either you know, or you don’t. Dismissing outside judgments from those who don’t know should be axiomatic. One without experiential knowledge adds no substance to one's opinions. Many accept this when it comes to wine; few accept this when it comes to cigars (this reviewer's specialty). Classic alcohol (spirits) holds the middle ground. Robert R. Mohr is a bourbon connoisseur and probably one of American history as well. The title of his impeccably researched, thoroughly investigated, amazingly comprehensive, and brilliantly inclusive book is, therefore, perfect—America’s Spirit. The adjectives just used to compliment this work are distinctly chosen and as definitive as this incredible book.

Robert R. Mohr introduces his readers to the richly nuanced bourbon world by first intimating the infamous and glorious past of bourbon’s rise to prominence. Like any novice approaching their initial taste, one is seduced by the mystery of what lies ahead. Incredibly, this sense of mystery—understood as esoteric knowledge with great secrets—never diminishes despite the raw factual data provided. Like the best bourbons, this book should be savored. There is history here; there is inside information; there is abundant guidance; there is just about everything one should know to begin the connoisseur’s journey. However, like life, this journey is ongoing and has no final ending. That is, the mystery goes on and on. Then again, that, too, is a reflection of America’s Spirit.

Solid read, there is a lot of good information in this book. My only small gripe is that it's a bit repetitive and formulaic. I enjoyed reading about the history and important people. It's got recipes and suggestions for bourbon tours, etc. There is a little bit of everything in here.
