The hunter is now the hunted... Vampire Nix Hadley wants nothing more than for everyone to forget he exists. He’s created a new life for himself far away from the bloody streets of the Melbourne feud that claimed the life of his family. Now a cellar door sales rep for a winery, he loves serving the tourists who visit, and he can always talk them into buying more than they planned with a little magic. This is the new start he needed…but he still sleeps badly, and he’s wary of trusting anyone.
Lance Orlan has spent the last six months tracking down the male heir of the Hadley family. If he fails, he’ll never be blooded and turned into a full vampire. When Lance turns up at the winery where Nix works, he doesn’t recognize the man he’s been hunting. All he sees is a cute hipster. Where is the cold-blooded killer?
The enemy has finally caught up with Nix. His life is about to come crashing down if he doesn’t do something. So Nix requests a truce.
He’s tired of fighting and running and killing, but he needs time to make a new plan. For two weeks, he plans to keep Lance close—very close. And Lance agrees because he’s enjoyed the time away from the demands of his family. But the past is catching up and the old feud demands blood. As Lance gets to know Nix, though, he starts to question what he’s been told.
Lance will have to choose between hate and love, and Nix will have to fight or surrender.
For readers who like enemies to lovers, warring crime families, and fighting and biting in their gay vampire mafia romance.
TJ Nichols (they/them) is the author of the Studies in Demonology and Familiar Mates series. They write mostly gay fantasy and paranormal romance, but sometimes gay action/horror as Toby J. Nichols.
After traveling all over the world and Australia, TJ now lives in Perth, Western Australia.
Not sure why, but I had the best time reading this book. The writing is fast paced but also weird and confusing at times. I really liked both characters, and the plot felt kind of original even with its vampire-mafia-Romeo and Juliet vibes. I just wish we got more of a conclusion and a more detailed HEA, they’d been through enough.
Bullets and Blood is the first book in the Hunting Hearts series. This is the story of Nix a vampire and Lance who was sent to hunt Nix down. This is a new take on vampires where only female vampires can turn someone. This story has mafiaesc feels of family against family. I loved Nix and Lance separately and together. They both had things to overcome. I loved the characters and world building in the story. I couldn't put the book down once I started it. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is an entertaining start to a new series. Nix and Lance are compelling characters with good chemistry, and I like the vampire world set-up and politics, especially the process of becoming a vampire. Male vampires are born hybrids/dhampirs until they are blooded (turned), in Nix’s family, at 18. Only women can blood a male and are fertile. Men aren’t allowed to pursue higher education or skills other than those dictated and necessary to protect the women in the family.
Unblooded at 24, this is all Lance wants. Despite being competent and dedicated to his family, he’s seen as a disappointment. Bringing in Nix is his last shot (possibly to the back of the head if he fails). However, chasing Nix has given him a sense of freedom he’s never had, and he’s curious about the man his family fears. He can’t reconcile the man with the dossier and is fascinated by that and caught off guard by his intense attraction.
For Nix, having a normal life was a pipe-dream, but it seemed possible with the family legitimizing. After the Orlan’s tanked the peace talks, he was forcibly turned and immediately became an enforcer. It was more traumatizing because he was so damn good at it. I enjoyed the truce and Nix’s laissez-faire attitude and unwillingness to run. There was no need to see the boy turned killer in action only the man he was desperate to be as a teenager. Lance hasn’t been so hardened by indoctrination to ignore this. He wants to give Nix the world, but they have the world against them.
There are a few things I found borderline ridiculous, like the Orlan matriarch’s reason for killing the peace talks. Plus, this is one of those instances where I like a story but don’t feel compelled to continue despite how uncertain their future is. I wasn't quite drawn in as much as I needed to be. But overall, it was a good time.
Bullets and Blood (Hunting Heart Book 1) is the first in a great new series about vampire families at war with each other. It is (probably) set in the familiar world of shifters and witches that the author does so well. These vampires are a new thing though as they have not appeared before, which goes to show how secretive they have been. They are more inline with traditional vampires in that they are powerful and drink blood than the ‘energy’ vampires TJ normally deals in. They have their fingers, and fangs most likely, in all the dodgy stuff going on in the world. There are advantages to being a vampire in this world but long life isn’t one of them as the body count for male vampires is high.
Bullets and Blood focuses on the fallout from the feud between the Hadley and Orlan families when the Orlans hit the Hadleys hard leaving just Nix Hadley and his sister Zinnia. The two vampires split up and try to stay alive. Lance Orlan has been tracking Nix for six months and, as he gets close, he finds out the real Nix does not match the Nix his family has told him about.
This is all about perception and lies. Nix and Lance get close against the odds and uncover some hard truths. They both have a lot to lose and that only gets worse as dreams get dangled in front of them. How they are going to survive and have a life together seems unlikely and become all the more hopeful when they take the required risks. Against the odds they are going to make it to a, if not a happy ever after, at least a happy for now. As this is Book 1, only time will tell. I’m ready and willing to join them on their journey. These are not your standard blood-sucking monsters so give them a try.
Vampire Nix Hadley wants to live his life without notice. His family was assassinated by the Orlan family leaving only him and his sister as survivors. He knows it is a matter of time before they catch up to him. All he really wants is to buy a winery and restore it. His time runs out when he is working in the local winery shop. Lance Orlan walks in and sees the man he has been hunting, but what he sees does not match with the information he has. Nix does not appear to be a cold-blooded killer. Nix knows his time is limited. He requests a truce. The two men spend the truce together getting to know each other quite intimately.
Nix and Lance both had tough backgrounds. Nix lost his whole family except for his sister but he did not know where she was. He did have some resentments towards his family but still, they were his family. Lance’s family did not really trust him and fed him lies to keep him hunting. Getting to know Nix led him to question everything. They both had insecurities but knew they cared about each other. There were so many emotions to experience along with our heroes. The world was incredible. It was matriarchal and you were born into a vampire family. The ending was very well done. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series. This one was captivating and enticing. I am hooked. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was such an interesting premise–vampires being born, not made…but also made like mafia-made. I love the idea of warring vampire families. And the matriarchy? Makes me think of, like, hives and queen bees. Love. It. I’m so excited to see what this series brings to the table. I’m a huge fan of TJ Nichols’ books already and this series has definitely drawn me in.
It’s always a struggle to gush about characters without edging into spoilers (look, I care about plot, but I’m a character-focused boy, sorry not sorry). I really enjoyed Lance and Nix. They’re so similar but different and compliment each other perfectly. The dichotomy of what each one thinks is ideal just deepens the whole thing: the grass is always greener, right?
The evolution of their interactions was so bittersweet as they grew to care for each other. Coupled with Lance’s growing doubts about everything he believed to be true, it was the perfect set up for a lot of emotions to run rampant. And boy, did they. Once the plot got moving it kept me turning pages when I really should have been doing other things (who needs dinner, anyway?).
Despite the ending being a little abrupt, I’m so happy with this series and can’t wait to see what’s next.
3.5 stars Vampire Nix is known as a cold blooded killer, he is very good doing what needs to be done, but he never wanted to be blooded - being blooded is when a person is born into a vampire family, but has to be drained then given blood by a female family member, usually the matriarch, before they are a true vampire. Nix wanted his freedom to do what he wanted, but that choice was taken from him, so he became very proficient at his job. Lance was born into a rival vampire family and is eager to prove he is worthy of being blooded. His job is to track down Nix and bring him back to face judgement. However, after being away from the family who never treated him well, he isn't as eager to turn Nix in. They make a truce for two weeks, and during this time they fall in love. But Lance's family is quite untrustworthy - to say the least - and force matters. I really liked Nix and Lance, individually and as a couple. They have so much to deal with and no easy solution, but eventually find a way to be together. However, the ending feels more like HFN and that their story will continue, and I'm not sure I'm interested in that.
I received an ARC from GRR, this is my honest opinion.
Bullets and Blood is the first novel in T.J. Nichols’ Hunting Hearts series and it starts things off nicely. I enjoyed the set up here, with its Romeo and Juliet style feud between the Hadley and Orlans families. We learn more about the long conflict between the clans, the failed peace treaties, and the recent slaughter of all but two of the Hadleys. Lance arrives full of determination to take down Nix, believing everything his family has said about him and the past events. So he is surprised to find Nix is nothing like the monster the family portrayed him to be, as well as to learn that much of what they told him about the feud is a total lie. It is clear that Lance is more of a pawn in his family’s game than anything, and from early on he is more interested in getting to know Nix than harming him.
It looks like the next book features new main characters and I like the way Nichols appears to be expanding the world building to feature different members of these families. I will be looking forward to continuing on in the series.
In Bullets and Blood (Hunting Hearts Book One) TJ Nichols has created a new mythical version of Australia unconnected to their other series, complete with vampires and weres. I finished the book last night and my first thought was I hope there are more books to come. Then on returning to the title page today, I found Bullets and Blood is the first book in a new series. I can’t wait to read more! In this book, the title describes one of the main characters. Nixon is the vampire and Lance is his hunter. I found the predicament the two find themselves in, fight or flight, very gripping and I did not see the resolution coming at all. Both of the characters are sympathetic, which is unexpected given Nix’s role in his crime family. It was entertaining to see beneath Nix’s ruthless exterior to the lowkey vampire within as Lance peels away the layers. Since Lance is the happy one to Nix’s grumpy persona, he has relatively little baggage that needs to be unpacked. The book has a happy ending with no obvious loose ends. I received a free copy of the book from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A refreshing twist on Vampires. Nix Hadley is a full-blooded vampire that only wants to live a vampire-free life since his family was wiped out in a blood feud with the Orlan family. He's fled from Melbourne to SW Australia and found a home at a winery where he could live among humans, like a normal individual. However, he's been tracked down by Lane Orlan, who is blood made. The twists and turns of this plot are intriguing and not consistent with the usual vampire theme. Nix's surviving sister Zinnia adds an important part in this story though she is only talked about in texts between the two. Her connection to this whole story plays a vital part as only females can create new vampires. Lane finds Nix, finding a vampire so different from their kind and because both want to delve into a mutual attraction both agree to a two-week truce that eventually ends in desires of one for the other. A truly unique theme that this reader totally took pleasure in reading. This is my voluntary and honest review of the ARC I received.
I started this book before heading to a concert and found myself wishing I could have read it all in one go. No ifs, ands, or buts about it, I absolutely adored this book!
Honestly, TJ had me at gay vampires. Supposed enemies to lovers was just the icing on the cake that was politely offered by hosts. Everyone has a type and Nix is no exception. Also, it must be difficult losing a family you still had a bittersweet fondness for.
But I really feel bad for Lance. His family ain’t shhh and it sounds like they never wore. I love how patient he was with Nix though, very “don’t spook the stubborn, wounded animal” energy. Nix was such a simple bloke at heart and Lance was so quick to catch on.
I definitely need to go back and read other books they wrote while I await the sequel because I am enthralled. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review. 4.75 stars for keeping me up until 4 AM when I was already exhausted from cheering on K. Dot’s antics.
Bullets and Blood (Hunting Heart Book 1) kicks off an exciting new series centered on warring vampire families in a world already inhabited by shifters and witches. These vampires are a darker, more traditional breed—blood-drinking, powerful, and deeply entangled in the world's underground dealings. Life as a vampire isn't easy, especially for males, with survival anything but guaranteed.
The story follows Nix Hadley, one of the last survivors of a brutal attack on his family, and Lance Orlan, the man sent to hunt him down. As Lance gets closer, he discovers Nix isn't the monster his family painted him to be. The plot weaves through lies, shifting perceptions, and a slow-burn connection between enemies-turned-allies. Despite the danger and emotional weight, Nix and Lance dare to hope for something more—maybe not a happily ever after, but at least a hopeful "happy for now." With this strong start, the series promises a gripping journey ahead.
Just when he thought he found his way out Nix finds his chosen way of life is at risk. He is sick of the life of a mafia vampire, what a combination, and has laid low, working at a vineyard around humans living in peace. He wanted away from the life that led to his family being wiped out in a bloody feud. And then Lance shows up, determined to pull Nix back in so that Lance can become more embedded in the life that Nix wants to avoid. Lance does not have the whole story and his attraction to Nix gives them both time to share some truths. This was so different from the usual vampire tale and the twists and turns in the plot kept me interested and wanting to read the next book. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The blurb for this book drew me in. The characters of Lance and Nix didn’t let go until I finished the entire story! Nix just wants to be free: free of his past, free of the blood feud, free to live his life. He only wants a winery and the chance to be at peace. Lance arrives to destroy that and finds so much more than he bargained for. Watching Lance figure out the truth and Nix supposedly watch his future disappear was heartbreaking but so worth a read. I couldn’t stop until I reached the end because I wanted to see them get their chance. I do not regret it either. I kinda want more honestly. This is worht a read!
An enemies to lovers vampire story that offers something different and reminded me a bit of West Side Story. I was enchanted by Nix and Lance. I really liked both characters. Nix is really smart, crafty and careful, but there was a time or two where he was a bit gullible, especially when his heart was involved, but that made his character feel more real. Lance is stronger than he realizes and once his eyes were opened to certain realities he was able to stand on his own strength and go after what made him happy. It was great to see these two come together to script their own life story and I’d love to see where these guys are five years down the road.
Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review. I’ll admit this Book took awhile for me to get into, but once I was a few chapters in, I was completely hooked. You have got Nix who is a full blood vampire who has been hiding for ages he’s tried to start a new life for himself. But he knows someone will come looking for him one day to kill him and that person is Lance. Lance had been trying to hunt down Nix for w while There’s twist and turns in this book for both vampires and these two have such a chemistry. It’s so strong that feeling gets involved. A great read
Great world building and an interesting take on becoming a vampire. I enjoy a good story where one character is hunting another for some reason convinced from things he's always been told that the other is a bad guy who deserves his fate. Then, when they finally meet the hunter finds out he really doesn't know this person he's been hunting and just maybe there's more to the story. Nix and Lance have a great connection and I liked the way the author handled Nix's plans to set up an escape from Lance only to find maybe he didn't want that after all. Very much looking forward to seeing how this world is developed as the series progresses.
A unique take on a vampire story. You are born into the world and can only be turned by a matriarch of a clan. Nix has been on the run since events led to the deaths of his family. Lance is sent to bring him back to be blooded into the family. What they don't expect a momentary truce allows them to show their true selves. Well paced read. Keeps you drawn in. However, with ending kn a HFN more than I prefer was left, not resolved. I get that it brings readers to want more yet this still feels like more needed to be said.
Nix and Lance story was filled with danger and adrenaline as two enemies become lovers and are trying to beat all the odds to be together. Circumstances, lies, and power hunger change numerous lives and initiate this race along the clock for those who try to unravel the ties and find a peaceful outcome. They were combustive together, and I adored their moments, but danger kept interfering, and they made some bad decisions thinking of saving the other. I was relived they got their happiness but it was a hard won one.
Loved this book ,,,,Nix is on the run and Lance is supposed to get Nix’s but a lot different things are are happening liked being watched and a truce between these two and the lies being told to Lance ,,,,and what he intends to do about it ,,there is a lot of ups and downs in this book which means what happens when you read this book means once you start reading this book ,you won’t put it down until you know exactly what happens..I read this book through BookFunnel for this author for my honest opinion..
Both character development and world building truly shine here: this is an easy story to be drawn into both because of the way it weaves together some interesting takes on vampire lore and because both Nix and Lance are fascinating individuals as well as a solid pairing. I like that both are complicated and have some things to work through– it makes for a compelling read. I’d love to see more of both the characters and the world they inhabit. 4.5 stars.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This book by TJ Nichols actually has more s3x than blood and it gives us a very different take on the typical vampire story. Vampire Nix and vampire hunter Lance meet and Nix talks Lance into a two week truce during which Lance discovers that Nix is not who he has been told he is and that being a vampire is not all that it’s cracked up to be. Oh yeah and there is a mafia involved. If all that sounds like a mess then I can tell you that it isn’t because it flows along at such a fast pace that you will not want to put it down. It’s a great read and I enjoyed it a lot.
I will give this book a 4/5. It is about Nix l, a vampire, and Lance a human that needs to capture Nix to be turned into a vampire. Lance hates Nix and wants to take him into custody so he can be killed. But when the two meet they actually like each other. But Nix has a price on his head. Lance will only get In trouble for helping Nix. They have no one to turn to for help. What will they do?
The Hadley and Orlan vampire families had been peaceful rivals until the truce was broken leaving only Nix Hadley and his sister who were now on the run . Lance Orlan is sent to find Nix and bring him back to his aunt before she will make him full blooded but everything he’s been told about Nix doesn’t correspond with the man he’s watching . This is another first author to me and i really enjoyed Nix and Lance and i will definitely be reading the next in series.
Now this is the kind of Vampire setting I have been looking for. Dark mysterious and dangerous. Nix however does have a normal job at a winery and has kept to himself away from the vampire society surviving out on his own. Lance needs to find him so he can finish his transformation. I like watching how Nix went from being a means to an end to someone Lance needed in many other ways. I loved that both Nix and Lance were strong and determined in their own ways.
Bullets and Blood is a good start to this new series. The storyline is easy to follow, and the characters are easy to like. I enjoyed watching Lance and Nix get closer, physically and emotionally. There are a lot more physical scenes than emotional, I must say. Maybe a bit too much if you’re looking for more story than spice. Either way, it’s easy to read and enjoy. I’m curious where the author will go with the next book in the series.
It's a good story, with an intriguing plot. How to turn someone into a vampire is quite different from what I've read in other books - I liked that. Nice twist. Nix and Lance don't take long to be attracted to another, and things spice up quite fast. However, I couldn't really enjoy Nix - just personal preference. It's a good read. The plot and the word-building kept me reading.
The blurb really caught my interest and I also really enjoyed the book. Once started I couldn't stop until the last page. Born Vampires and a mafia type setting with all the danger that goes along with that sucked me into the story. Great characters as well. Looking forward to the next book.
Wonderful start to a new series! Very different and I really liked it! I'm very interested in reading the rest of the books in this series!! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!
