The Lost Saint

Rate this book
An action-packed, time travel romance perfect for young fans of Outlander and romantasy like Powerless

Ana should be enjoying her last summer before college; instead, she's stuck with her ex on a pre-paid trip in Germany. She's determined to make the best of it, visiting castles outside Hamburg and drinking in the local myths of medieval saints and miracles.

On the night of the summer solstice, as a meteor streaks across the sky, Ana and her friends decide to attend a party in the sacred caves of Eadin forest. Suddenly, an earthquake strikes and scatters the partygoers. They stumble outside straight into ... a snowy landscape where a furious battle rages. In the chaos, Ana is separated from the group and comes face-to-face with Leon, a wounded holy warrior—and realizes she's been transported to the 14th century.
Ana and Leon must set aside their mistrust to search for safe passage away from the vicious Northmen who are pursuing both of their groups.

As sparks begin to fly between them, Ana faces more dangers in the form of scheming lords, suspicious townsfolk, miracles she appears to be causing, and even Leon, who begins to wonder if this beautiful girl might be a saint or something far more sinister. Nothing is as it seems, and Ana finds herself caught in a power struggle between the church, the men of the North, and a magnetic young lord who is determined to use her as a bargaining chip.

With home looking ever more unreachable, Ana must determine who she is, whom she loves, and what she's willing to sacrifice to return to the present.

A well written historical fiction romp that feels very much like a young adult homage to Outlander, The Lost Saint takes both its protagonist Ana and readers on a journey back to the 1300's, where knights and Northmen battle and proclaimed Saints work miracles.

While I'm not one to gravitate to historical fiction generally I did appreciate how well written this is, and think it's going to be a great title to recommend to the younger Y.A crowd, especially as the romance aspect of the book is very tame compared to a lot of other Y.A titles out there currently.

This one does move at a slower pace, focusing more on character development. Little Maudwyn was a standout, as the plucky young helper to protagonist Ana on many occasions.

There’s something seriously awesome about a New Zealand author who’s also a teacher - and Rachael Craw proves she’s her own kind of saint with The Lost Saint. This gripping YA fantasy blends mysterious timeslips, tangled emotions, and intriguing magic in a way that totally hooked me from the start.

If you love a good time-travel twist, this one’s got you. The story cleverly leaps across moments in time, creating that spine-tingling feeling of things just out of reach - and just about to go wrong. Plus, there’s a simmering hint of romance that doesn't fall into the usual love triangle trap. It’s more of a "love V" (is that a trope?), where two compelling characters are drawn to the same person - both you have enemies vibes. It’s messy, magnetic, and very real.

Rachael Craw’s writing is sharp, emotional, and full of heart - just like her characters. I am def team Ana and her saintly skills. And knowing Rachael is a Kiwi teacher? That just makes her next-level cool. She gets what it’s like to be a teen and pours that right onto the page.

If you're into stories with soul, swoon, and time-bending suspense, The Lost Saint is for you.

Genre-
Medieval Fantasy

Age Rating For It-
15+ because there is some mentions of a little girl being assaulted by a male predator and there is some violence too. There is also some romance but nothing explicit with the romance mostly just kissing and not too much of that anyway.

Thoughts/Would I Recommend This?-
This book like my last read was also very just mid and there I didn’t connect with any of the characters and I didn’t feel they had much growth in the book either which I didn’t love. I love it when we see the characters grow and develop as the story goes on, and this one didn’t have much of that. I also again like I said at the beginning didn’t connect with the fmc much and so that wasn’t great, but I thought the story was interesting thought and had lots of potential, but it didn’t really fully use the potential or anything. All in all though not the worst book I would say but not the best definitely so I honestly wouldn’t really recommend, but others may like it more than me.

Oh, I really liked this book! It’s very similar to Outlander, yet it has its own unique story. However, I hope the author writes a series, as this one felt unfinished.

I've read all of Rachael Craws books to date, The Spark Triolgy, The Rift (wishing this would get another book) & now this latest YA Magical Realism with historic references, & it didn't disappoint.

What a wonder you are! You write such great characters, people I want to bat for & become invested in! I was so shocked when Will just died...you had set him up like a central character & then whammo, I liked him & then I had to move on! I loved that constant feeling of she's safe, yay, we will be reunited with the others...& then bam, something else would take her away, & not always what i expected, some people might find this irritating that she never quite gets there but i enjoyed the further interactions she had with characters, further cementing the type of gal she is!

I am a gal who sees her books like a film in my head, some books are harder to picture but thus was written like a film would role out. I loved the budding relationship between Ana & Leon, but also loved the way Ana connected with Brandt, Maudwyn & Precious. I loved the use of the box, so many souls trapped in there forever! I'm intrigued at the healing power Ana posseses.

Of course like any little old kiwi girl I love seeing my world pop up in a book, when you see New Zealand printed its like you have actually written my like actual name! It's been so nice to finish & start the new year on holiday with this book!! I have my fingers crossed that this is the beginning of a series.

This book was an advance reader copy given by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Ana, Gwen, and Ana’s ex-boyfriend Steven are on a trip when things take a terrible turn. Ana and her classmates are transported through time, only to find themselves the target of Northmen who are hunting them as a sacrifice for a god. Ana gets separated from her friends and ends up with a wounded knight who cannot understand where she has come from. As they try to rejoin her friends and avoid those who are hunting them, their attraction grows.

This was an average read for me- it was quick and I enjoyed it well enough, but for me, Ana was lacking as a main character. It seems like “The Lost Saint” is part of a series, but I’m not sure if I would care enough to keep reading.

Ana's journey from a modern summer vacation to the tumultuous 14th century is full of action, mystery, and forbidden love. The blend of historical drama, fantasy elements, and a strong protagonist makes it perfect for fans of Outlander and Powerless.

The story seems to have it all: thrilling battles, intriguing characters, and a captivating romance that blossoms amidst danger and uncertainty. Ana's struggle to navigate this unfamiliar world while figuring out her feelings for Leon will surely keep readers invested in her journey.

If you enjoy time travel, medieval settings, and a dash of magic, this book is sure to captivate you. Get ready for an unforgettable ride through time and the heart!

what happened to the "three already captured" by the Northmen, are they just abandoned by Ana and Gwen and Stefan etc? what about the Bishop and his machinations? Ana's growing relationship with Brandt? and the Kjalka didn't seem actually banished, so is the whole prophecy done? and now they're not even trying to get home? seems really unfinished, which is really frustrating once you get to the end of the book.....

I liked the plotline. However, I only realized a few chapters in that the book was the start of a series, and that admittedly left me slightly biased as to how I felt since the book was only recently published. Good book, and I think I'll finish the rest of the series once it's out, but the book was a little below my reading level and impacted my enjoyment, so I'll try to be a bit more picky from now on.

While romantasy is hugely popular at the moment, this book does not fit into that genre, and I was immensely grateful for that! Where it does fit is in the timeslip genre, which I do enjoy when it’s done well.
In 'The Lost Saint', it’s done incredibly well. Right from the start, I was engaged with the main character, Ana, and her combination of strength and heartache. The heartache comes and goes, of course, but her strength and quick wits both serve her in this story in a way that means hope and excitement for the reader. I mean, how would you feel if a cave collapse sent you back to the early 1300s in Germany, and when your six friends left alive are captured by bizarre invaders, or so you think.
Ana is alone with only the soldier she dragged over a cliff to help her. But does he want to help her or kill her? As she battles to come to terms with the stark, violent reality of the 14th century and stay alive, I was with her every step of the way. I was even inspired to do a search for the historical background of the novel, but I suspect Rachael Craw has invented all of it, which makes this book even better. If you enjoyed'The Sterkarm Handshake' by Susan Price, you will very likely get into this book as well – if not, I highly recommend it anyway!

An homage to Outlander but make it YA.
I did enjoy this - the time travel aspect along with the romance, the historical fiction side to it and the overall adventure of the story was fun to follow and there was always something awaiting you on the next page. I loved Outlander and so it felt really nice to dip back into a story that focuses on similar themes.

It definitely is YA and there were some parts where I wanted more adultness to it but that's more my own preference than a flaw of the book because I think this would target its YA audience well.
I also felt that the main plot driver of the story and what the main characters are trying to overcome gets settled very quickly and it ends up falling a bit flat. The end of the book felt a bit rushed and maybe needed a bit more depth and answers to it. However, I think there is also going to be a bit of a romantic plot twist which ticks boxes for me and honestly is probably the driving reason why I would read the next book.

I think if you don't mind reading YA and want something that is easy and light but still has some good plot lines then this one fits that bill, especially for Outlander fans.

Eighteen-year-old Ana is spending her last summer before college with a group of friends visiting Hamburg, Germany. Unfortunately, her ex is there as well, but it's too late to cancel. Right as the group is partying in one of the sacred caves of Eadin forest, an earthquake causes the caves to collapse. But worse are the Viking-like warriors whom they stumble into on their way out. Ana is separated from the survivors of her group and finds herself colliding with a wounded warrior, and finds she's no longer in the 21st century but somehow was transported to the 14th century. She finds herself a bargaining chip in an ancient conflict. Add to all the scheming lords, suspicious townsfolk, and rumors of miracles. It doesn't help that she finds herself attracted to the 14th-century warrior. She needs to keep her wits and find a way back before it's too late.

What worked: YA Outlander meets Connie Willis. Ana is dealing with a breakup and wants to put all of it behind her by traveling with her friend and others in Germany. The emotions of college-aged young adults after a painful breakup are very realistic.

The earthquake in the caves and what happens afterwards move this time-travel story forward. The Viking-like warriors with their frightening prophesies that somehow involve Ana and her group take a grisly turn. That's when Ana is separated from the group and stumbles literally into a warrior.

There are hints of romance in this novel. As a reader, I wanted a tad bit more between Ana and Leon. There were sparks, but nothing too risque.

I also found the idea of saints intriguing. Eadin Palace is a place that sounds almost like a Medieval Camelot. I love a good Viking story, and the addition of Northmen and their prophecy added to the story.

The scenes of the suspicious townsfolk over Ana, who accuse her of being a witch, were intense. I liked how Ana held her own, even when facing the possibility of imprisonment or worse. Her spunk kind of reminded me of a younger Claire from the Outlander series. Both rise to the occasion of being thrust against their wills into other times.

This is the first book in a series. Hopefully, the second book will pick up on the saints of Eadin Palace and the bubbling romance between Ana and Leon.

Fast-paced time-travel story that thrusts a reluctant heroine into the 14th century and a prophecy.

Okay so I just finished The Lost Saint by Rachel Craw and I’m literally obsessed! When I first heard about this book I knew it was going to be my kind of novel and it did not disappoint!

Once thing I really liked about this book was that the main character, Ana, was super relatable. I’ve read other books where the female main characters are supposed to be the amazing heroines that save the entire world, and you kind of get tired of it after a while. But I liked watching Ana be thrown into this completely new world and not trying to freak out in a time that’s completely different to hers. In some moments I found myself thinking that I would have done the same things as she did, which is different from other fantasy books I’ve read. I also love how she’s as stubborn as she is awkward and that she doesn’t just accept defeat when she’s in trouble and comes with with creative ways to get out of tricky situations.

I also enjoyed the attention to detail when the characters either enter a new location or the peculiar feelings another character is feeling. While reading this book sometimes it felt like I was actually in the same situation as them and so I felt completely part of the story. I enjoyed that feeling very much.

And the ROMANCE! So good! The relationship between Ana and Leon is absolutely perfect and I wouldn’t change it in any way! Their romance isn’t cheesy, or too spicy, or too cringy. It’s the kind of relationship that keeps readers on their toes and one they can relate to at the same time.

The only reason why I didn’t rate this 5 stars is because I found that in some areas, especially near the ending, that I would get confused on the descriptions of what’s going on, since so many things are happening at the same time. Like in a few areas I found myself re-reading passages or paragraphs because I didn’t understand what just happened. But it didn’t influence the storyline or my excitement in any way.

So in the end, The Lost Saint is a great book to read if you’re into fantasy YA, romance and time travel. The characters are very relatable and the descriptions are intriguing and accurate to the 14th century. Absolutely recommend it wholeheartedly and I can’t wait for the sequel!

Enjoy your reading!

After Ana and her friends are whisked away to another time and dropped in the middle of a battle, Ana is separated from her friends. This story is about Anna‘s perilous journey back to them, and trying to return to her own time. On her way, she meets Leon, a soldier, and Lord Brandt, who is not as he seems. There are lots of twist and turns, a discovery of new powers and so many kidnappings.

Now to the romance. Ana’s heartbreak in this book was a bit annoying. I feel like she was mourning over a match that was wrong to begin with and she just couldn’t see it. Then she seemed to move on quickly to more heartbreak and then we get a lukewarm budding relationship with Leon. If spice is your thing, this book has none. That isn’t a problem for me as I often just skim those pages anyway. I’m not really a fan of these two as a couple. In my opinion, they lack chemistry and I wish the writer would’ve gone a different way. The relationship lacks real tension or true meaningfulness and came off as really shallow. It would make sense if it ends up being just a rebound, but as endgame I’m not interested in reading anymore about them.

While the plot was unique and I didn’t feel like I was reading a book I’d read 1000 times before, this book felt a like an overlong introduction to a series. A lot happens of consequence and there are plenty of action sequences, but it didn’t feel like we were moving towards a goal until the book was nearing over. This feels like the first of a series that must be read in order to move on and understand a hopefully more interesting story.

I received an advanced review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

3.5 stars raised to a 4!

I'm not usually drawn to a time-traveling historical fiction story, but I was intrigued with the premise of The Lost Saint! Our main character Ana is on a post graduation trip in Germany before she goes off to college. While traveling, she and her friends go to some cave ruins to party when all of a sudden there's a big storm and before she knows it, she and her friends are transported to 14th century Germany in the middle of a battle that leaves Ana separated from her friend group and clinging to survival with a soldier named Leon. What transpires next is a journey that leaves Ana and Leon trying to figure out why she is there, what they can do to get her home, and how they can possibly get her reunited with her group, all while avoiding the Northmen who are trying to capture her for their own nefarious reasons.

The Lost Saint left me wishing that there was more to the plot of this first book--I can see that the author had a lot of ground to cover in setting up the world of this series, but I wish that there had been more plot development. I am interested in this Outlander-esque premise, however, and I'm curious to see where the story goes since there was a slight reveal and twist to Ana's character at the end of the story that seemed like such a cool concept.

Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Note Press for an early advanced digital copy of this book, and the chance to read and review it! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I'm not usually drawn to historical fiction, but Rachael Craw's latest might just change that.

Ana and her friends are thrown back into the 1300's where Saints performed miracles and knights were not something out of a history book. Ana becomes separated from the group and comes face-to-face with Leon, a wounded guard who deeply mistrusts Ana and her witchcraft. Together, they must search for safe passage away from the vicious Northmen who are pursuing both of their groups.

With home looking ever more unreachable, Ana must determine who she is, whom she loves, and what she's willing to sacrifice to return to the present.

This book gave me massive Outlander vibes but with a more YA feel to it, with the characters more focused on not losing their phones rather than the whole we've just travelled through time thing. It made the story fun, despite being quite graphic and gory at times. The romance is quite tame, which is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other YA books out there…

This book was also more focused on character development, rather than plot development, which indicates that this is being set up for a series which I cannot wait to read more of. This story was so gripping but also easy to read. I could not put this one down and flew through it.

If you love Outlander or historical fiction, then I highly suggest you pick this one up.

Thank you to Allen and Unwin NZ for sending me a copy to review.

If you love historical fiction, with a element of portal time travel, a prophecy and falling for the warrior that saves your life, then this one is for you!
This book is like a YA Outlander with a more fantastical element and a group of friends.
First in a new series by a NZ author, this is one I enjoyed but didnt love. I really liked the 14 Century setting and historical take on magic, and anything weird basically. There were moments in this book where i thought the flow was a but off... like okay this group is focusing on the language a bit too much. They just had an non explainable experience and the lack of language barrier is what they focus on. Otherwise, when Ana started to interact with Leon was where it got more interesting. I wouldnt say i felt like their romance was that prominent... Ana's feelings were a bit all over the place due to previous love interests.
Whilst i didnt love it, it is one that kept my interest and I'm looking forward to see how our group influences the 14th Century in the next installment.

Thanks to Allen&Unwin for an ARC of this book. All opnions are my own.

What begins as a seeming story of two young people who recently broke up and find themselves on a group tour, quickly explodes, first when Ana finds herself in a darkened cavern with Will, another tour group member. As much as she wants to hook up with him, images of her Ex ruin the mood. That ruination is dwarfed by an earthquake-like event that shatters the cavern where most of the rest of the tour members are. Ana and Will barely escape before the rest of the cavern is destroyed, only to come face to face with pelt-wearing barbarians who are intent on killing or capturing the surviving students.
Welcome to the year 1303 and a whole new reality for Ana and several other surviving tour members. What happens from that moment on is an excellently crafted first book, full of action, a new romance for Ana, nonstop danger, and revelations, all leading to a very nice ending that sets up what comes next. It was a book I got in the mail yesterday and couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. I will definitely buy the next installment as soon as it is published.

Thank you so much to Allen & Unwin for gifting me a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

This was a thrilling, captivating, wild ride! I was absolutely hooked from the moment these kids stepped out of that cave. Like, what do you mean there’s vikings and knights fighting each other?! What do you mean it’s the 14th century?!?

I was hooked, desperate to find out what happened and how they were going to get back, how Ana was going to find her friends again.

But along the way I fell in love with the characters, too. Leon and his awe of Ana, Maude and her courage, even Brandt and his struggles, his love for his niece. These characters are all so interesting and I loved the way the story wove around them.

I need there to be a sequel. Or two. Or three. I need to know what happens next, if Ana and her friends ever make it home, if Ana ever see’s Maude again. I need to know where the magic is coming from and how it works. I need mooooore!

New Zealander Ana is on a trip to Hamburg with her classmates from her international school when a larger group of Vikings attack them. So your average Tuesday.

The Lost Saint has been compared to Outlander, due to the time travelling element (in addition to going back to 1300s, Ana meets a very cute German soldier), but I thought I could see more clearly the DNA from Michael Crichton's Timeline, where students who studied history ended up getting a far too close view. I do appreciate that The Lost Saint is pretty clear eyed about how frustrating it would be to go back in time - oppressive religion, no sanitation, no cars and entrenched sexism. But Ana's relationship with Leon does add a fizzle to the book.

The book does seem to end on a cliffhanger, and so I hope Craw is planning a sequel. This is a book which would be great for young adventure lovers, who enjoy a splash of romance, or fans of historical action romance.

Audiobook Review!!!
This is the first time I’ve listened to the whole audiobook of one of my own stories! Sofia Engstrand does a truly exceptional job. I was amazed at how she could make the story fully her own; I could almost forget that I wrote it and just got swept away with her narration. I felt like I was watching a movie. I was lucky enough to get to choose the narrator for The Lost Saint. I was sent audio samples from 3 different voice actors. My daughters piled on the bed with me and we listened to all 3. Each voice artist read the same 2 portions of text. We listened to each of them multiple times, debating the strengths and benefits of each performance. They were all excellent of course but one sounded quite adult and another quite young, while Sofia - just like Goldilocks best home invasion picks - was ‘juuuust right’. We all loved the husky quality of her voice too. Cannot recommend highly enough!

The lost saint was my first novel by Rachael Craw. I love to find a kiwi author!
I think this book would have benefited from being longer. The story was interesting, weaved with history and the characters wonderful.
To create a FMC that is both strong and vulnerable is a skill that was executed so well here. However, the best character came unexpectedly, a little lady with a huge personality.
This book only took a day to read, it's relatively small and engaging enough that I didn't want to put it down.
So why only 3.5?
While reading this I expected to rate it higher, it's exactly the type of easy read I like to have between larger novels.
As I neared the end of the book I could feel myself begin to worry, there wasn't enough pages left to wrap everything up neatly. The end was too sudden, with too much left unsaid.
Even having said all that, I enjoyed this read, I will read it again, and I will recommend it to others.
