This selection of poems by the Hindi poet, Alok Dhanwa, were composed during the 70s, 80s and 90s. He writes about a rural childhood, and about the energy of city streets, especially at night. He attained a cult status before his poetry was widely published and one can imagine, reading these poems, people gathering to hear him read, He captures a nation in upheaval, echoing tensions that remain in India today, even if the context has shifted. He speaks for marginalized communities and raises his voice against the establishment. The longer poems gathered toward the end of this collection are especially powerful.
