In the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war, after securing Srinagar, Indian forces targeted Pakistani aggressors in the Uri valley. General Thimayya led the offensive along the Uri-Domel road with 161 Infantry Brigade, while 163 Brigade diverted enemy reserves towards Tithwal. The offensive began in late May 1948, capturing Dogarpur, Tregham, and Chowkibal. Tithwal fell on 22 May, with 6 Rajputana Rifles securing Darapari. The Pakistan Army counter-attacked, but it was at the Battle of Darapari that Company Havildar Major Piru Singh exhibited extraordinary bravery, earning him the Param Vir Chakra.
