The setting of the book begins in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee and moves south to Saint Petersburg, Florida. It’s a story where the good men are bad, and the bad men are really good. The main character, Cali, is a battered wife of a Sheriff’s Deputy. She has no hope and no confidence. She makes the decision to end her life, but she is stopped by an ex-marine, single dad and very handsome activist. With his help Cali blooms from a shell of a woman, to a female no man would ever want to cross. In the process she finds everything she ever dreamed of, a family, and a man that truly loves her, only to have her soon to be ex attempt to take it all away. The problem with this is he has no idea how strong Cali has become, or that her new friends are on the top ten terrorist list.
Silence is a love story on three levels. One, the good Samaritan. Two, a person learning to love herself. Three, two people falling in love. But, the author doesn't stop there. This story is like a full course meal with all your favorites; mystery, suspense, spiciness, and more.
Just when you think the author is finished revealing all of the secrets, she throws you a couple more. Just when you think you've figured things out, she throws in another twist and takes you down a different path. I loved getting slung around by all the twists and turns. I especially liked the Native American "flavor". It's not every day you see indigenous people portrayed as heroes.
There were some elements I couldn't connect with including Cali and Daniel's initial attraction. I was puzzled by how someone so brutally beaten and emotionally broken as Cali was when Daniel first found her could find a moment to admire her hero's physique--even if he was a Lakota "Adonis". Seem like the pain alone would have kept her mind on her broken ribs and compromised lungs. I would have been drawn in sooner if their attraction had blossomed after the physical healing.
Also, the Christian element felt like it was tossed in as an after thought and came across as contradictory. I think if it had been explored more seriously, the scene near the end on the bridge would have had a more profound impact for me.
Overall, I found this story engaging. The characters were believable. Each one had a unique voice. By the end I felt like I knew them personally. With that said, since Daniel is taken, I'd gladly accept a date with Adam (just kidding).
This is a book in search of a theme: is it abuse survival? Romance? Mystery? American Indian politics? Conspiracy theory? Religious reawakening? Where in the world is it going? This drifting from one thing to another left me confused, rather than anticipating the next twist or turn. Since I could never nail down the characters’ motivations and directions of travel, I found it difficult to really connect with any of them. This wasn’t helped by the typos, grammatical errors, and punctuation errors, often in every paragraph and at least one per page, which yanked me out of the action again and again.
I also found much of it unlikely. It stretched my suspension of disbelief. The action seemed stilted, with the reader being told “this caused her to...” and similar explanations, rather than simply being told what happened.
My rating is based almost exclusively on the fact that the author obviously has lots and lots of ideas. She just needs to separate them out and concentrate on a couple at a time, rather than trying to stuff them all into one book, and she needs to get an editor. Three stars for potential.
Silence is a great book for an afternoon at the beach or park just relaxing. The author made me feel so many emotions. I was angry, scared, frightened, I laughed, and I fell in love all in the single day that it took to read this book. I was unable to put it down. I really felt what it feels like when you fall in love. The suspense was intense throughout the book. The author made me think of things I never thought of. As ignorant as this will sound, I never considered the fact that Native Americans were still alive. I never thought about a mascot making a child cry. I never saw the harm in it. I do now. I love the way the book ended, and it left me wanting more.
So one of the guys on tour suggested I read this book by Mercedes. I was dumbfounded. Mercy wrote a book? She is pretty to look at and has one of the sexiest voices on radio, but she can write? I hopped on the bus in hopes of getting a nap, before I knew it; I was being called for sound check and I only had 2 chapters left. Silence screams to be on the big screen. The story moves fast and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is like a high rated well done TV Drama that leaves you with a season finale screaming, I need more now. I cannot wait for book 2.
I loved the imagery and the writer’s style I could taste the saltiness in Cali’s blood. I could feel the rage and anger in Alex as he exploded. The scene with the Romero brothers, homeland security, and the FBI in the hospital towards the end of the book was intense. I felt my own rage as Adam stood eye to eye with the agents.
Did any other readers catch on to the symbolism? A poignant one for me was at the bridge at the end of the book. Cali was trapped in the middle with her past, and on one side they are saying the Hail Mary in English and on the other they are praying in an indigenous tongue.
Reading this book was like watching a very good television drama where you don’t want the season to end. The author does leave you with cliff hangers; just like any good television drama does. If there was a way to pre-order the next book in the series I would.
This author is on her way to being the next big thing. I don’t say that lightly. The book is hard to put down.
With that said there is violence and sex in this book. If you do not approve of either, this is not the book for you. Also there is swearing in this book, but it does not feel gratuitous or forced. It felt as if the characters would naturally say the things they said.
If I could give Silence, by Mercedes Montgomery, more than 5 stars I would.
Kudos to Mercedes Montgomery on an amazingly written debut novel. The storyline brought with it many emotions and characters that you loved & hated. Her characters were well developed and each had an important role within the story. I was brought into the story immediately with the intensity of her writing skills. Without putting out a spoiler I must say that if you don't read this book... You are truly missing out on a good book. I cannot wait for book #2. I was given a digital copy of SILENCE by the author in return for an honest review. No compensation was received. Did I mention...suspense, romance, and so much more?
This book by a brand new author was an easy read. It is true to life for a lot if women and some men . I feel that it will help women in these situations to know that there is a way out . Some with low self esteem will hold their heads up again . Even if you haven't Been abused everyone knows someone that has at one time or another. I could not stop reading this book and would definitely rate 5 stars. It left you wanting to know more about Cali and to follow her on her journey . I am hoping for a part ll cannot wait!!!!!!
I fell in love with this book, right from the very first pages. In fact, I read it all in one day. Make that one afternoon. I began it at an appointment I was at, and when I left the appointment I went to get lunch and continued reading while eating. After I finished eating, I sat in my vehicle in the parking lot and read until I finished the book. Yes, it really is that good. The story is engrossing, the characters very easy to either love or hate, depending upon the character, and the book left me hungry for more. This is absolutely a fantastic first novel from a world-class author.
