Kayes worked in the investment business from 1983 - 2022, having founded Willingdon Wealth Management in 2003. Willingdon was acquired by Exencial Wealth Advisors in 2020.

He has been actively involved in youth sports in the community, including co-founding Stewards of the Game, and serving as the Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at the Community School of Davidson for six years.

Kayes is currently a masters track athlete and was the national champion in the decathlon in his age group in 2017. He also serves as the Varsity Head Basketball Coach at Liberty Prep Christian Academy.
