When rugby star Jesse Brannon buys the house of his dreams in the small coastal town he grew up in, the sea calls to him. While diving through the reefs and kelp forest of the private bay, he comes across something unexpected -- an injured merman. His late mother always told him there were mermaids in the water, but Jesse never thought she really meant it.
As Jesse does his best to help the lonely, injured merman recover, he finds himself falling in love. The two of them grow closer, learn how to communicate, and overcome their differences in anatomy, but the impossibility of a future together starts to weigh on Jesse. Time is running out and Jesse will have to leave the house by the bay as soon as the new season starts. Will his new mate understand and wait for him, or will he lose him forever?
**I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review** Full review to come, but for now this was precious and wonderful! MM Monster romance fans pspspsps come read this short and cute AF human/merman novella! So lovely and sweet!
This book is SO cute and sweet. Devoured it like a bedtime snack all in one go, and couldn't sleep until I finished. Never has a monster romance made me audibly "Awww!" And kick my feet as much. Both protagonists are sweethearts in their way, and the way they communicate is so lovely (even if you are screaming at Jesse at some points- we love a clueless romantic.) To balance out the sweet there's an amazingly well-written dark scene- nothing scary for the reader as were warned well in advance, but definitely for the characters. You've gotta have that bit of hurt with your comfort, and this is so well written and so nice to finally not have a miscommunication trope he the cause of drama.
It's nice to have such a mix of romance, a touch of dark, very well-written spice, and a relationship based around really really trying to communicate.
Absolutely loved it, I really hope we get more of these two and they'll be more novellas coming!
Although this is a short novella the authors really captured the personalities of the characters in such a realistic and compelling way, that there is not much time needed to get into them. The romance is cute and the spicy scenes are written beautifully! I love the way they described the biology of the merman in such a detailed way, that I am sure that they researched a lot for this (especially the more private part were super awesome and interesting!🤭). The more dramatic parts in this story had me on the edge of my seat, even though I knew that this would have a happy ending, because, oh my, they really got into some gore and I loved it! Sadly I was not sitting on the beach, while drinking cocktails and basking in the sun, while reading this very heartfelt and beautiful story, because I can guarantee that this would have been a perfect holiday read. So I will keep this on my re-read shelve for next year!
Really enjoyed this beautifully written love story that treats its protagonists, both human and not so human, with equal care and consideration. As a reader, I like to be taken on an immersive rollercoaster of emotions that really takes me away from this current timeline's often gloomy reality -- which is exactly what you get here. Such a wonderful concoction of spice and sweetness and depth. Highly recommend! 💜
