Once upon a time, two best friends decided to write paranormal romance. And while that was awesome, they also sometimes wanted to write insanely dirty stuff that wasn’t paranormal at all. This is that stuff.

Kit Rocha is the dystopian-erotic-romance writing alter-ego of writing duo Moira Rogers.

Apparently there’s a two-book series I should’ve probably read first

This book popped up as ‘suggested for you’ and I have to admit I was immediately intrigued. From everything I saw in the burb and the “Born to Sea and Storm Book 1” subtitle, I assumed I was reading the first book of a series. That’s true… but not. Apparently there is a duo (‘Consort of Fire’ and ‘Queen of Dreams’) which came before and likely would have greatly enhanced my understanding of this installment. So, learn from my mistake and consider reading those two first.

I had read the first five chapters of this book and was finding it difficult to grasp. I felt like a piece of flotsam tossed about in a storm. Where was the introduction to this world and these characters? I knew I must have missed something. That’s when I realized it was a continuation (spin off?) of the other two books. So I stopped, went back to page one and began again, this time with the understanding that these characters had lives & battles & relationships before I met them which I knew nothing about. I was still a little lost, but was more forgiving of myself and the characters.

As the story progressed their histories became clearer and I found myself thoroughly lost in their story. Once that happened, to say I was swept away on the tide would be an understatement. Aleksi, Einar, and Naia were a delicious trio. Their budding relationships, developing against the backdrop of a diplomatic mission, was delightful to watch unfold. The frisson of their obvious desires set against the restrictions of duty made for a maelstrom I couldn’t wait to see make landfall. And when the storm finally broke? Wowza! Who wouldn’t want a ringside seat to the joining of the God of Love, the Kraken, and a sea nymph of immense power as to rival a goddess?

My actual rating of this book is currently a 4.5, but I’m confident that would be a solid 5 had I read its predecessors. Needless to say, I will now go back in time to visit the Bound to Fire and Steel duo.

I received an audiobook ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.

Unfortunately that's going to be DNF @ 10% for me.

I really wanted to give this and the romantasy genre a fair go, but I could tell this just wasn't for me.

The generic fantasy world-building, tone, and bodice-ripper prose just aren't for me. I wish I knew what happened to make me so hard to satisfy when it comes to fantasy, I used to love it, and still do when something knocks it out of the park, but they are few are far between for me.

From what I read so far, I am sure fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarro will enjoy it (no shade)

3.5 Stars for an Enjoyable World

These gods and godlings are supremely distractable. I’m not 100% sure I understood why the God of Love, the Kraken, and the Nymph Goddess were dispatched for this mission. However, it was very sexy.

✔️ Triple POVs (Alexsi x Eilnar x Naia)
✔️ Set in a fantasy land with major and minor gods, immortals
✔️ Open-door romantasy (5/5🌶️)
✔️ Tropes: Saving the world!
⚠️ Cliffhanger ending

Please read Consort of Fire and its sequel before reading this. Things will make so much more sense!

This book though is a 3.75/5, rounded up. I really liked Consort of Fire but this one lacked a bit of the magic. The authors went deep into the island lore here which was great and the whole ending was basically a multi-day orgy so do with that what you will. I’m still excited for the next one. This is such a sexy slept-on fantasy series and I have no idea why this isn’t more popular.

I also see Aleksi as Harry Styles and I don’t know why. Am I the only one?

As much as I loved Einar, Naia, and Aleksi, it's difficult for anyone to live up to the original throuple in my eyes! But I also love the dynamic created between these three, as well as the continuing story that's set up in terms of the greater conflict in this world and the threat that's yet to be fully vanquished — not just the Betrayer, but whatever Aleksi is still going to be dealing with! (Also, this book honestly had me at sexy kraken pirate king.)

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this edition from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have a lot of thoughts on Daughter of Tides: it was enjoyable enough, but the beginning was a little confusing as was the system of gods and magic. I was pretty lost for a while at all the different characters and names that are thrown in but I was able to grasp it. Also, the pacing was very slow when they're on the ship to Akeisa and once they get there, and it took me a while before I started to get into the book. But the plot definitely does start to pick up!

The story follows Naia, a nymph, Einar, a pirate and the "Kraken", and Aleksei, the god of love. The three of them are thrust together and travel on a crucial diplomatic trip. Naia and Einar have instant lust and it was difficult to be invested in their relationship. They had encountered each other previously but there's nothing really explained about why they are so drawn to each other, other than that they are just incredibly attracted to each other. The same goes for Aleksei and Einar-- There is also history between those two and the three of them eventually get caught in a whirlwind (very spicy) romance.

This book is well written and I think it will appeal to fantasy romance lovers, but unfortunately it just wasn't for me.

Thank you so much to Montlake and NetGalley for this ARC! 📚

I received an advance copy from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes; this in no way influences my review.

Kit Rocha has cemented themselves as an auto-read for me since I read Mercenary Librarians, and seeing their continued growth as authors is an absolute delight. The Dreamers world they’ve created is so excellent and full of so much hope and love. I love the legend being built up in Daughter of Tides and the way reveals were done in the excerpts at the beginning of each chapter. I love Naia, Einar, and Aleksi, and cannot wait to see the continuation of their romance. This was such a great book and I am so curious to see what’s going to happen next after that ending!

the writing for this is really beautiful, and i can feel the author's passion for it rolling off of the writing in waves. i adore that and i want to see what else the author will write. but for this novel in particular, the only problem is, i feel that i have been dropped off in a world without ever knowing about it. it surprised me that this is the first book of a series, because it was written with the sensation that i should somehow know of all these characters, places, and plots from a previous novel. especially since everyone has some sort of power or attachment that feels like would have been rewarded from a perilous adventure. it kind of gives the feeling like the author just threw a bunch of their OCs together.
as a result of this experience, i found the plot to be incredibly jarring (and vague) and it is constantly introducing new characters without ever spending any meaningful amount of time in any particular one of them. i can tell that each character has a lot of personality, feelings, and wants; i find that despite this, we only get a glimpse to the surface of each one because the novel is stretched to fit so many different perspectives. this is a rare time where i wish the novel had actually taken more time to explain things to me or built things up.

Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

3.5 hearts

Aleski is the living embodiment of the God of Love and enjoys playing matchmaker.  How can he resist finding the perfect love interest for the Kraken, the Ocean's protector and an entity thought to have lost his heart millennia ago.  Naia is a new godling born from the dreams of men, goddess of the sea, it seems only fitting she is also the only one capable of capturing the heart of one of its fiercest creatures.   In Daughter of Tides, the first book in the Born to Sea and Storm duology, set in the same world as the Bound to Fire and Steel duology, we begin our journey to see if the sea will capture the heart of the Kraken and if the God of Love will find his perfect match along the way.

I highly recommend reading the Bound to Fire and Steel duology as it sets the foundation of this story and I don't think the reasons for the trios diplomatic duties to a small Island will make sense otherwise.  There is a history and enemy well defined in the first duology along with some interactions with the trio that set up the crux of the story in Daughter of Tides.  During the battle in Queen of Dreams, Aleski was damaged when he was cut off from the dream for a time.  He feels his mortality for the first time in thousands of years.  Wanting to leave a mark before his eventual death, he is determined to help his friends by solidifying an alliance with a powerful Ice Mage who rules an Island of legend.  If he can also facilitate stoking the embers of heat between Einar and Naia, all the more fun.
A hardened pirate warrior who had seen over two thousand years of life was certainly too old to blush just because a man smiled at him— even if that man was the manifestation of desire and passion. Especially if that man was also wholeheartedly playing matchmaker. Only the Lover could half seduce a man while throwing him at someone else with both hands.

Aleski might have accidentally seduced both Naia and Einar a little too well as the embers of desire surrounding them catch flame he finds himself caught in the burning fire of their desire.  Aleski doesn't believe he is long for this world, but to be loved by two such powerful hearts might just make his last days some of the best in his long life.  That is if he can stay alive against the plot that seems to be afoot on the Island and the dangers that surround them all.

Not many authors can write a thruple situation I'm on board for.  But, Kit Rocha has written three of them now that I have really enjoyed and were fun to read.  The spice level of the book grows and grows until it explodes near the end of the story.  Naia is somewhat adorable as she is enjoying so much of her new life as a god and the adoration of the people who dreamed her into being.  The Kraken is fierce, brave and you can see how his entire life he has never truly been excepted for everything he is, until now.  I am the most intrigued by the transformation that Aleski seems to be going through and what that will mean to the overall story arc.

I enjoyed the book, however I think it could be edited down a little to flow slightly better.  The end quarter of the book was a lot of sex stacked up, which while hot didn't really move the plot along.  Still really steamy scenes, back to back to back.  I also think they may have done a disservice to the reader by trying to set it up as a stand alone duology.  It makes much more sense to put it in the Bound to Fire and Steel series, since you really should read those books first to have the right context for the story.  I don't think on its own it stands well enough.  If you liked Consort of Fire and Queen of Dreams this is a fun expansion into the lives of gods and the ongoing political drama set in that world.
The goddess once told me that death is not the enemy. I waited for her to elaborate, but she did not. Finally, unable to stop myself, I asked. She told me there are many enemies. I asked for their names, and she gave me several. “Greed. Fear. Anger.” Her eyes met mine. “Pain.”

Thank you Montlake and Kit Rocha for the gifted eARC of Daughter of Tides!

Daughter of Tides throws you straight into the heart of the story—no hand-holding, no gentle easing in. Within the first few chapters, I genuinely thought I had accidentally picked up the second book in a series. A quick dive into Kit Rocha’s other works revealed that while this isn’t technically a sequel, it’s set in a shared universe with previous books. Reading their summaries helped me get some much-needed context, but just a heads-up: if you’re new to this world, you might feel a little lost at first.

That said, as a high fantasy reader, I’m no stranger to being unceremoniously tossed into the deep end (I’m looking at you Brandon Sanderson). However, I can see how some readers might struggle with the first quarter of the book as that is mainly world building. But then we get to the politics and we start to see the yearning each of our 3 main characters have for each other and the story takes off from there. While you’ll likely spend a good chunk of time piecing things together, if you’re patient, the payoff is worth it.

The writing is absolutely gorgeous—almost lyrical. The storytelling feels epic, weaving in courtly drama, mythical intrigue, and just the right amount of tension. My only gripe? The synopsis spoils the main plot twist! I spent way too long confused about why Aleksi wasn’t sick at the beginning—only to realize that if I hadn’t known he was going to be, it would have been an absolutely insane plot twist!

Now, let’s talk romance. This is the definition of a slow burn. The first half is all about setting the stage, carefully building relationships and tension. But once you get past the halfway mark? Oh. My. Gods. The romance kicks in, the spice is immaculate. The dynamic between Aleksi, Einar, and Naia was everything. The yearning, the growing friendship, the respect that slowly blossoms into something more—it was beautifully done.

That said, the book as a whole feels like an extended prologue—laying the groundwork for what’s to come. Keep in mind that this book requires patience, but, if you love lush prose, intricate world-building, and a romance that makes you wait for it, you’re in for a treat.

Thank you to Kit Rocha and Montlake Publishing for this ARC through Goodreads Giveaways!

This book was certainly a slow burn but the spice picks up quite a lot toward the end. I loved the world building and the mingling of multiple gods and goddesses from different mythologies. There are many names and concepts introduced that I initially found confusing as I did not read Consort of Fire or Queen of Dreams before Daughter of Tides. It is absolutely possible to understand this book without prior knowledge from the Bound to Fire and Steel series. If you are like me and want to know ALL of the details, I’d recommend you read that duology first!

A spicy romantasy that ends on a cliffhanger and left me curious to see where Kit Rocha will take this story!

**ARC provided in exchange for an honest review**

I had so much fun with this one! Daughter of Tides kicks off a new romantasy series full of mythology, magic, political drama, and a seriously steamy love triangle (or maybe it's more complicated than that...).

The story follows Aleksi, the god of love, who’s slowly dying but still determined to complete one last mission—a tricky diplomatic visit to an icy rival kingdom. He sets sail with Einar, a moody pirate lord with kraken vibes, and Naia, a sweet and curious water nymph. The setup is perfect for tension and secrets, and it delivers.

There’s a great balance of action, romance, and mystery throughout, and the worldbuilding—especially the mythology—is really well done. I loved the chemistry between Naia and Einar; their connection felt natural and electric. Aleksi, on the other hand, didn’t fully click for me in terms of romance. He’s clearly conflicted and yearning, but that emotion didn’t quite leap off the page the same way it did with the other two. I’m hoping we get more of his perspective (and more depth) in the next book.

The side characters were also a highlight—interesting, well-developed, and definitely left me wanting more. This isn’t a standalone, so there’s a lot left to be explored, and I’m really looking forward to where the story (and relationships) go next.

If you’re into romantasy with mythological flair, slow-burn tension, and a dash of pirate chaos, give Daughter of Tides a try!

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read Daughter Of Tides! I really loved this authors writing style and the concept of this book! The beginning of the book was a little confusing to me but as I continued to read things became less confusing but every now and then something would happen in the book that would confuse me. I really liked the three main characters and seeing their love story play out and I loved the history of The Kraken and The Goddess! I think this was a fun read and I’m excited to see what happens next! Thank you again to NetGalley!📚💕

This wasn’t a horrible read, it just wasn’t a very good one. The pacing is very uneven, with a chaotic opening where we’re dumped into a lot of names and facts (apparently it makes much more sense if you’ve read her other series, which the blurb does not mention), a middle that is so slow as to feel stalled, and then an ending that is frantic and fierce, but all sex and no plot.

The poly/throuple aspect was fun, and I was glad to see it explored, but everything felt instalove sudden and rushed, with nothing to build a relationship, just the fact of relationships we were expected to accept and follow through. Again, maybe there’s history to these characters, I don’t know, but I felt like much was missing.

Great Narrators! I truly enjoyed all their voices.

This book has some fabulous world building. Slow burn but it burns so good. Throuple was done very well. Really good fantasy storyline with a bit of mystery and throw in the romance of it all. Overall I enjoyed this audiobook.

There is something about how Kit Rocha approaches throuples that is just so delicious and perfect. Einar and Naia are the pair that we first see longing for each other. Both gods of the sea, though Einar is infamously known for having his heart closed off and Naia wants more than he’s ready to give her. Aleksi, the Lover, completes their trio when they are sent off to politick with the Queen of the ice nation of Akeisa.

I was expecting a longer time spent on the ship traveling to Akeisa than we were given but it didn’t harm the plot. On the ship we’re given glimpses of the growing attraction between the three, though the main focus for the first half of the book is very much Naia and Einar. It is only when Naia and Einar’s attraction sparks that we truly see why Aleksi is so focused on helping them get together. I adored the way Einar’s attraction to both of them was approached, and it really spoke to him becoming my favourite character.

As usual, Rocha does take their time getting to the spicy bits, but don’t worry, it is very much worth it. We have one scene with Einar and Naia alone, but the rest is with the burgeoning throuple as they are finally able to come to terms with the full extent of their connection to each other. Einar is rough and wild, Naia is ferociously hungry, and Aleksi is so wonderfully bossy - they are a joy of a throuple to read.

The politicking plot is eclipsed with how well the romance is done though, and I felt like one convenient plot event really wrapped things up far too swiftly for the amount of tension the politicking had been given. But since this is a Romantasy with the romantic relationships being the main focus, I wasn’t all that bothered.

I’m thrilled to read more from Kit Rocha and can’t wait to see what characters they’ll write next so I can become obsessed with them all over again.

We were introduced to the Sheltered Lands and the Empire in Ash, Sachi, and Zanya's books. We were given gods, dreamers, and a betrayal that rocked their world. The trio (along with the other gods) thwarted the Betrayer's plans, but things are still tense. Super tense. Like, diplomacy is needed at every turn and a quick escape is needed if the diplomacy fails.

Which is where Aleksi, Naia, and Einar come in. When Ash and his special someones need to help with a danger that has arisen elsewhere, the Lover, the Nymph, and the Kraken are tapped to continue the diplomatic mission in Gwynara's kingdom. That, as you might guess, comes with complications.

Aleksi is failing. He hides this from the other gods and most definitely from those traveling with him. Naia is new to the world and might not have a handle on the full breadth of her power (or so the others think). And Einar? Well, the big guy has secrets and those secrets might have secrets. Traveling to the island kingdom Gwynara rules is complicated for him on so many levels. After all, he has the secret he hasn't bother to share with the others regarding his connection to the island and he has so many feelings Naia invokes in him. Feelings which he isn't sure what to do with.

Which is where Aleksi comes in. Sort of. Aleksi has convinced himself playing matchmaker to these two is a worthy last task before he fades. Or whatever it is he's doing. So he sets them up and urges them together and somewhere along the way the two lovebirds start to see Aleksi in a different light. One that makes them protective and loving and NO ONE'S GOING TO TAKE HIM FROM THEM AS LONG AS THEY BOTH DRAW BREATH!

Oh, yeah. The Kraken and Nymph have feelings for one another AND for the Lover. And they're going to fight with everything inside them (of which there is much!) to keep him and their blooming relationship safe.

Hoo-BOY! I must admit these three are smoking hot and the world their moving through is amazing. I honestly can't wait to see where they go next!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc of Daughter of Tides. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Yayyy I’m so glad we’re returning to this world- it’s so well done and I love the world building/story and how the author ties it together. This was fun, hoping that the series continues.

This story features Aleksi: The Lover, Naia: the nymph, and Einar: the Kraken. So much lore was divulged, and I love the dynamic between them. Edit to add this is spicy, but meaningful spice🌶️🌶️🌶️

Daughter of Tides is book one of the Born to Sea and Storm series by Kit Rocha. This one is linked to the Bound to Fire and Steel series so if you haven't read that one you might be a little lost picking this one up as the characters overlap and the stories do too. That said, I think you can dive into this one without reading the other if you truly want to.

This book focuses on Aleksi, Einar, and Naia. They are sent on a diplomatic visit to Akeisa and at the same time, Aleksi sees it as an opportunity to nudge Naia and Einar to take a chance on each other. While they eventually want to take the leap, they also want to bring Aleksi along with them. What they don't know is that Aleksi is dying.

The politics portion of this one focuses on trying to create problems between Gwynira and Aleksi and Einar. Whether it's through false attacks or poisoning, those behind what is happening are doing whatever they can to create problems and we are just introduced to those responsible for everything at the end of this book so I'll be curious to see what happens next and who else is involved.

If you enjoyed the other series of books, I encourage you to pick these up too. They not only continue to have the politics and danger but the spice that Kit Rocha do so well.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

I had an absolute blast listening to Daughter of Tides. This audiobook blends fantasy politics, divine intrigue, and sensual tension into a story that feels both epic and intimate. The mythological elements are especially fun, pulling in multiple gods and legends that give the world real depth.

Aleksi’s impending death adds urgency to every choice he makes, especially when he boards a ship bound for hostile territory. Traveling alongside Einar and Naia creates a constant undercurrent of tension. I was especially drawn to the tenderness and spark between Naia and Einar, which felt natural and emotionally grounded, while Aleksi’s romantic arc is more subdued.

The plot balances action and mystery nicely, never forgetting the political tension driving the voyage. It is very much a slow build, but once the spice arrives, it arrives with intention. I also adored the supporting cast, each of whom felt distinct and meaningful.

This is not a standalone and it shows in the best way. There is so much left unresolved that I immediately crave the next installment.

I really enjoyed Consort of Fire and was really excited for this follow-up series.

Overall, I enjoyed the book as a continuation of the original series, but I am not sure how well it stands on its own. I was surprised by how much was left out about the events preceding this story given that it’s meant to be a part of an altogether different series. If you haven’t read Consort of Fire (I forget the series name) you would have a hard time following what is happening in this world. I read the series a year or two ago and forgot some of the plot details, which made it difficult to understand some of the political plot points and motivations of some of the major characters in Daughter of Tides. I don’t think the Dream or high court is even explained in this book and they’re pretty important to understanding the lore. I don’t think the history with Soren was really explained either, though there were references to the war.

But, if you did read Consort of Fire and enjoyed it, then I think you will enjoy Daughter of Tides. It isn’t as good, mostly because the characters and tension are not as compelling as the previous series, but it is nonetheless engaging. I look forward to the second part.

Romance tropes: fated mates, why choose

Uh oh! Everything you thought was neatly wrapped up in Queen of Dreams is not so neat after all!

I don’t think you should read this without reading Consort of Fire and Queen of Dreams first—it has been written in a way that will refresh you on the plot points, but it’s still a little too plot-heavy to be easily understood without the backstory.

Character-wise, everyone’s…nice? I like them all, but I don’t love them? They feel distinct enough, but I don’t particularly care about them.

In terms of explicit content, nothing happens for the first half of the book, and then the last 20% or so is just a giant sex scene feels like. So the pacing felt off here.

I really liked this book—however, I have felt like I was somehow missing a whole chunk of the story. I’m not sure if this is part of a series that I have not read beforehand, or if it just felt that way, but the characters felt already somehow established. There was not much explanation as to who each character was, what the Kraken or any of the Gods were or meant really, before we were plunged into the narrative.

Apart from that, I had fun binge reading this. I do love myself a fast-paced romantasy that does not feel like insta-love, and even though our three main characters knew each other before the start of this adventure, I did not feel like the inevitable romance was rushed.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for approving me to read this, I’m rating it 3.5 stars.

This story really caught me off guard, it was unique and intriguing. The story follows goddesses and gods and magic following a greek mythology vibe. This is incredibly spicy which was unexpected.

There is a good amount of world building and clear explanation on the magic system/plot. And although it is rather spicy there is a good plot.

I would continue on the series to see where the story goes and how the character dynamics further develop.

It was nice to see these characters continue from the original series. However, I didn't realize this spin-off was not a stand alone, but rather the beginning of its own new series. I don't know how I feel about that, primarily because the love relationships in this book felt somehow forced or quickly thrown together. Whereas, the relationships in the original series felt more natural and complete. Nevertheless, this book still gets an overall five star rating from me.

A spicy Pirate Fantasy!! Yes Please!!! I mean I knew I was going to like this book because I was half in love with the characters from the previous books. It took a little bit to get back into the world. The pacing felt a little slow but I was so happy to see Einar and Naia and Aleksi find their love.
I loved getting to board the ship with Einar and his amazing crew. I love his "god' power. His bad guy's reputation with a heart of gold, how can you not fall in love.
The pacing was a little slow as we continue from where the previous series left off. The world has been broken and needs to help to get back to remembering the dream and the void. Things are coming together for new battles and new evils, new magics.
I will defiantly be reading the next one to see where it all goes but I am interested to see what we do with the love connection. I feel they had come so far, we seemed to have healed Aleksi and they have all acknowledged their love so I am not sure what is going to happen there.
I love the writing, I love the world, I love the spice!
