This book masterfully underscores the dangers of confusing an abusive relationship with a consensual BDSM dynamic. Eve’s story is particularly chilling, as she seems to have been groomed by Frank—her father’s best friend—who exploited her vulnerability after her father’s death. What he manipulated her into had nothing to do with the principles of a healthy BDSM lifestyle. Whether it was working at Fairford Manor, the exclusive kink resort, or simply reaching her breaking point, Eve ultimately finds the strength to walk away after Frank’s anger spirals into violence. What I loved most was Jonathan’s role in her awakening. He not only steps in to rescue her but patiently educates her on what a real D/s relationship should be. He explains that true BDSM is rooted in choice, mutual consent, safe words, and, above all, respect for limits. This gentle, yet powerful, revelation slowly opens Eve’s eyes to what she’s been missing. Though Jonathan is clearly drawn to Eve, he’s not the typical "knight in shining armor." He’s noble, as Eve herself observes, and gives her space to rebuild her life on her own terms. As they work together on the expansion of Fairford Manor, the simmering tension between them grows, until that inevitable moment of passion explodes. Their first scene together was nothing short of electrifying. However, the story takes a darker turn after a family tragedy, leaving me with some lingering concerns: How does one know when a previously abused submissive is pushing herself too hard just to please her Dom? How far can a Dom control his submissive outside the bedroom before he smothers his partner or they become master and slave? Can Jonathan find that delicate balance as they navigate their continuing relationship? Well, there’s only one way to find out!
