There's no way the hot relative of a minor British royal is hitting on her. She's misreading everything, right?
Except there's no mistaking that proposal.
When 50something Ranney Martini (yes, Nessa’s mom!) finds herself being courted by the very English best man in a minor royal’s wedding she’s managing, she can’t help but laugh. He’s 17 years her junior, smoking hot, and an award-winning architect. The flirting is all in her imagination.
Of course it is.
But when a strange twist of fate leaves them trapped in Las Vegas, and Tom has a sudden need for American citizenship - faster than fast - Ranney proves she’s the consummate professional.
Because when you’re a wedding protector, you do whatever it takes to make the perfect wedding.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 5 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French, German, and Italian, with more titles releasing in the future.
From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire in a rom com).
She also writes romantic suspense as Meli Raine, sexy shifter romances as DJ Jennings, billionaire shifters as half of the author team Diana Seere, and co-authors with Elisa Reed.
She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where she is the only person with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.
At first I didn’t think I was getting a copy, but then I got one a few days before pub date and picked it up right away! It was a little longer than the other books in the series, the author even addressed that in her note at the end of the book.
I enjoyed Ranney’s story. As someone who actually likes younger guys, I was excited for this reverse age gap story. Now it is an older couple, I mean I believe that Tom was around 35, 30-something anyway? Maybe a little older and Ranney was 50-something. And it isn’t my exact type of relationship to relate to as Ranney is divorced and has a daughter. But I still enjoyed the story. Obviously all the problems people have with that reverse age gap reared their ugly heads in the story, mostly in Ranney’s own head as she doubted that they actually had a relationship more than the marriage of convenience they ended up in.
At times I got a bit irritated with Ranney’s pushing him away because of age. And I was definitely not a fan of how Nessa reacted to all of it. And I liked Nessa before this, her book was really good! The whole story starting out with so many little disasters or inconveniences that led to Ranney and Tom having to spend time together was definitely something that kept me turning pages as it went along. And in the end I like the way things were resolved, and Tom’s speech at the wedding was really good.
While we got led up to the point of the intimate scenes, they really pretty much all faded to black, so that shouldn’t be an issue for people who don’t want that in their stories. And I enjoyed all the things that ended up kind of being inside jokes for our couple. Especially that pink SUV! lol. I think this is the end of this series, I’ve read 3 of the books, I think the one I didn’t read is an actual age gap story, older man, younger woman, and that is really not my kind of read. I do recommend the series though, and am glad to have been able to finish it up!
Is my first one in the series that I didnt love. The female character was too insecure. At her age she should voice her concerns more and not speculate
Ranney, a woman later in life, finds herself being courted by the best man from a minor royal’s wedding. He’s 17 years her junior, and hot! We have to be honest, we could not put this one down; we just devoured the story. Tom is a thriving architect living in Boston, but originally from England. He is a swoony character, loving, sweet, funny, frank, loyal, and hot. The perfect husband material, kind, loving, smart, driven, and genuine. We wanted him for ourselves. LOL
We loved how Ranney and Tom seemed to run into each other time and time again; some of those situations were stressful, yet they created laugh-out-loud moments for readers. Their chemistry is explosive, and their connection is beautiful. Seeing Ranney vibrant and joyful, enjoying life in the arms of a man who made her feel safe and secure, melted our hearts.
This is the first reverse age gap romance we have read. The age difference between the couple never seemed to be a problem for us; they appeared perfect for each other, with chemistry and a genuine connection. The plot was fun, flirty, and downright hilarious at times. Their road trip together was filled with witty banter, explosive chemistry, romance, love, and beautiful friendships.
The couple faced challenges and a series of events, some seeming disastrous, but turning into a fun and exciting adventure for both Tom and Ranney. They created beautiful memories despite the hiccups they faced.
There were numerous laugh-out-loud moments throughout the story that kept us entertained. The characters were awesome, funny, loving, and some added drama to the story. One character that stood out was the Uber driver, who seemed to play matchmaker. The entire cast of characters added depth and entertainment to the story. We fell in love with Tom from the start, but Ranney took a bit longer to win us over. Her refusal to see what was in front of her became frustrating, but understanding her perspective on societal perceptions added depth to her character.
There were many memorable quotes and favorite parts in the story, but, if we had to choose, Tom's mom's situation and Ranney calling Tom her husband for the first time were highlights. The surprise on Tom's face was priceless. This is one of our favorite reads for 2025.
Author Julia Kent brings her quick-witted dialogue, comedic timing and unique love challenges to Never Marry the Best Man! Ranney Martini coincidentally meets a British stranger in a little store named Meet Cute. They have a quick conversation about a book they both love and depart without learning each other's names. As an employee of Wedding Protectors, Ranney will be overseeing the details of the British stranger's cousin's wedding. Due to a last minute change in schedule, Ranney finds herself hopscotching flights on her way to Idaho where the bachelor party will be held. She barely makes her connecting flight edging out someone who thought he had scored the last empty seat. Ranney's enjoying a glass of wine in the airport terminal while she waits for Nilly in the office to re-book her canceled flight. Fate once again sprinkles her fairy dust as the same British man saunters up to her after remembering her from Meet Cute. Tom finally introduces himself and quickly realizes they're both going to Boise for the bachelor party so he invites her to join the group on the private charter. Unexpected turbulence causes them to re-direct to Las Vegas where the adventurous hilarity begins! Tom has been shamelessly flirting with Ranney the entire time, and although she's drawn to him, her head can't let go of the 17 year age gap between them. Tom is such a charming likable character who continually tries to convince Ranney to give their relationship a real chance. The ever-responsible side of her who raised her daughter as a single parent and cared for her aging mother, constantly struggles with believing why such a handsome younger man like Tom would want to be with her. I loved Tom for perservering, and I loved Ranney for finally listening to her heart and not letting outside influences direct her way to happiness! Loved this series and the unique happenstances the author cooked up for our enjoyment!
This is the fourth and sadly, the last, in the Whatever It Takes series but it certainly goes out on top. When Ranney Martini from Wedding Protectors runs into a handsome younger man in a Boston book store called Meet Cute, she is smitten, but as he leaves the store, so do her dreams. Tom Phillips is minor British aristocracy and has always been attracted to older woman, so Ranney definitely caught his attention in that store. But in true Julia Kent fashion, this is not the last time that they will meet.
Ranney is assigned to a ensure that the bachelor party for a minor member of the British royalty runs smoothly. When the call comes that the party have arrived early, Ranney must catch a flight to Idaho, via Miami and Los Angeles. With no luggage, a nearly missed connection, a drink in an airport, a private plane and a broken arm, all before she arrives in Idaho, this trip has the makings of a complete disaster and one that Ranney will have to work hard at to reign in. But Ms. Kent is a master at weaving a series of events into a story that is funny, clever, engaging, with characters you can really connect to and moments of seriousness (or as serious as one of Ms. Kent's books can be) and you can feel the love float from the pages. This is truly a wonderful gentle, happy ending to a great series.
Could this really be the finale of the Wedding Protectors series, I am sad to see these characters go, but I am sure they will resurface in another story in the future. Ranney is feeling a bit lonely and is thinking at what her future might be. Having only her daughter Nessa, mother Mame and her friends at work and no love prospect in her future she is questionning her life choices. One day she meets this young, sweet gentleman in a store and is surprised at the attraction. However, later she has a work emengency that forces her to leave earlier than expected for Idaho to chaperonne the bachelor party. Tom is a groomsman at his cousin’s nuptials and must rush to LA to catch a private jet to Idaho for the bachelor fly fishing weekend. Life being what it is and circumstances brings Tom and Ranney face to face again. Their attraction jumps off the pages, but her indecision and questionning of herself is what makes this story so interesting. This take charge woman becomes so confused when she is in his vicinity, but his take charge attitude is what is needed. Together, they have the perfect equilibrium. This is one story who will keep you up at night until then end. Captivating, enthralling story who take you on a wild ride between Las Vegas and Idaho and back to Boston.
This is the 4th and sadly the last book in her Whatever It Takes series and it is written in true Julia Kent fashion. This is Ranney and Tom's story. Ranney works for Wedding Protectors and is what most would consider a senior member of its staff. Her job is to oversee a fishing trip for the groom and his groomsmen. Of course nothing goes smoothly, there are unexpected flight delays, an accident with the groom, which Ranney handles in stride. Tom learns that he has be nominated for an award, he is so very excited to be considered but finds out that he has to be an American citizen while they are stuck in Vegas. Did I mention that Tom is younger than Ranney, it doesn't bother him he actually likes older women, however the age difference seems to bother Ranney. Well, now we have a fake marriage to keep Tom in the running for the award. Will they give in and let romance take its course or will they let other influence their relationship? This book has it all, it is witty, makes you swoon, some fun and heartfelt moments with some fan yourself scenes. This is another really good book writhen by Julia Kent, take a chance and grab it, you will truly enjoy it I know I did.
Brilliant, utterly amazing 💖💖💖 This is the fourth and final book in the Whatever It Takes series and it blew all my wants and needs out of the water. Ranney is a problem solver. Working for Wedding Protectors has meant she has learnt to think fast, and outside of the box. But meeting Tom pushes those boundaries even further. She finds herself letting go and allowing herself to come first. Tom is a charismatic character. Finding the joy and ease in life, he finds Ranney refreshing. He is drawn to her smile, her character and her brain. A meet cute introduces them. A chaotic journey builds their depth and a memorable flight cements them together. I loved the twists and turns in Ranneys head as she tries to please everyone. Tom is steadfast throughout, supporting, smoothing and taking control when needed. It's been a joy to read their story. I have loved this series and these characters. I am going to miss them, but look forward to reading the series again. Which i definitely will. I highly recommend this book, series, and author. Pick this book up and you won't regret it.
Never Marry the Best Man by Julia Kent is a witty and heartfelt contemporary romance that I really enjoyed. The story dives into the complicated, often hilarious dynamics of relationships and friendships, delivering plenty of charm and emotional depth. Julia Kent’s writing style shines with its blend of humor, warmth, and relatability, making the characters feel like old friends you genuinely care about.
The slow-burn romance between the leads is well-paced, filled with tension and sweet moments that kept me engaged throughout. I appreciated how the story explored themes of trust, second chances, and personal growth without falling into predictable clichés. The supporting cast adds fun and complexity, enriching the overall reading experience.
While the plot uses some familiar romance tropes, Kent’s clever dialogue and genuine character development made it feel fresh and enjoyable. I would have liked a bit more conflict to raise the stakes further, but the satisfying romance and engaging narrative earned this a solid 4-star rating from me.
Never Marry the Best Man is a great pick for fans of contemporary romance who appreciate humor, heart, and well-drawn characters.
This entire series has been a great journey. Wedding Protection services. A wide variety of things that can interrupt or threaten a wedding. “Whatever it Takes” is the company motto. Ranney Martini takes this quite seriously. Most of this story revolves around the bachelor party.
Travel woes affect both the wedding party men and Ranney as they travel to a private fly-fishing club in Idaho. Ranney is more than a decade older than architect Tom, who likes a more mature, educated, confident woman.
A hurt groom, dead cell phones, a possible award, flirty behavior, an age gap, pink transportation, fierce determination, uncomfortable joy, and public opinion. From hilarity, to real life problems, to making everyday a gift. A fully satisfying conclusion to this wonderful series.
***** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book *****
Such an amazing story! Funny and fast paced, at times sweet and swoony, also emotional and thought provoking.
“He leaned in, and for a heartbeat she thought for the hundredth time about all the reasons this shouldn’t happen. Age, time, the fact that their lives didn’t intersect in any logical way, but logic dissolved the second his lips brushed hers.”
After their third “meet-cute” Tom already knows he is falling for single mom, Ranney. Ranney can only see the obstacles of their large age gap and the fact that Tom is a member the wedding party she is responsible for as part of her job with Wedding Protectors.
Never Marry The Best Man is book four in the Whatever It Takes series. (sadly the last) And maybe my favorite, but I think I thought that about the others, also ;) I absolutely loved this book! I spent my weekend on a crazy wedding adventure with Tom, Ranney, and the gang from Wedding Protectors and I definitely did not want it to end. -5 Stars- -Diane-
Problem solving is Ranney's specialty, when she runs into him again trying to get her seat on a plane to Idaho, things don't go as planned, from cancelled flights, private plane rides with the groomsmen heading for the bachelor weekend, to emergency landings in Vegas, nothing is going as planned for Ranney, except maybe seeing Tom again, waiting for the groom to have surgery they venture out to eat, enter a Greek uber driver that shows them the best of Vegas, spontaneous combustion is the chemistry they exude, but the age thing is her hang up, Tom's got a real problem and no time to solve, enter Ranney and her abilities for solving them, Julia Kent you have out done yourself, I absolutely adore Ranney and Tom's story, rooting for them all the way, for Ranney to get her head on straight and forget about the age, and what others think, listen to your hear and love will win, another phenomenal addition to this series, thank you, Dana Zamora
Julia, does it again! She continues the story of Wedding Protectors with employee, Ranney’s love story. We get a peak inside, not only Ranney‘s head, but Tom’s as well as to how they feel about their relationship and filling in narrative that isn’t necessarily there. I believe this is relatable as most people do this and it happens to get in the way of advancing their relationship. An age gap with a younger man is less common and Julia finds ways to overcome obstacles and look at their situation differently. I loved Tom’s best man speech and the calmness he added to many tense situations and how he cherished Ranney, making her feel special. I also enjoyed cameos by past characters and how Ranney was distracted from her job duties. Again, relatable to the real world.
This is the fourth book in this impressive series, and this is Ranney and Tom’s story. At a minor royals wedding, Ranney finds herself being escorted by award winning architect, and best man Tom. When Tom finds he needs American citizenship, Ranney steps in and marries him in Vegas. This is a well written easy to read story, with family, friendships, emotions, making choices, reverse age gap, fake marriage, forced proximity, humour, witty banter, road trip, romance, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Ranney Martini is the most senior staff member at Wedding Protectors, and the most unflappable, but this time she finds herself acting in lost uncharacteristic ways. What is supposed to be a normal assignment: oversee a bachelor party for an important client in Idaho. Sie to several mishaps, it turns into quite the road trip with detours in LA, Las Vegas, and a wedding chapel with a most charming and attractive younger architect named Tom Phillips. Could this be her road to love? Ranney and Tom are great characters and their romance from their meet cute at Meet Cute to the ending is engaging and entertaining.
This story is so full of push and pulls but so full of heart as well. The finale of the series and Julia held nothing back!
Raney and Tom are a wonderful match made in fated happenings. He sees it as they are meant to be. She sees it as wrong and ill advised. But can true love ever be wrong?
Follow along as one mishap after another keeps throwing them together and one quick decision leads them on a path to their happy ever after.
I so adored Tom and his brilliant mind through this book. His gentle and steadfast way of handling Raney' s thoughts on them as a couple. She was a hard won prize!
I enjoyed digging in to this seasoned, reverse age gap read, and the ups and downs that their story takes. They have a spark early on with that first meet, and then the way the chips fall that puts them together later was fun. There's definitely tension along with those sparks. I think my favorite was how they spent their time together. Chatting, sharing, and just having fun. There were some things that had me questioning... like why did they need to drive to their destination instead of hopping a plane? The story did flow, with a great pace that kept the pages turning. It's a read to sit back and jump in to.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Julia Kent ends the Whatever It Takes series on a high with Never Marry the Best Man. I love a well-written reverse age gap romance, but there's a lot more to Ranney Martini and Tom Phillips's story than their more than a decade and half age difference. I empathized with both main characters when they were dealing with those moments of doubt and hesitation when it came to their relationship. The wit and humor meshed well with the swoon and romance, and the rest of the Wedding Protectors were accounted for, their presence not taking away from Ranney and Tom; rather becoming that sprinkling atop an already delish read. While you could definitely read this on its own, I think that reading the books in order brings an even greater appreciation for this series ender. 4.5 stars!
This one was unputdownable! Of course, I am of a certain age and I loved Ranney and Tom. He was almost too good to be believed. The meet cute in the “Meet Cute” store was hilarious especially as told later. I could so relate to Ranney and her insecurities but she was also confident and respected in her element. Tom just shook up her world, in the best ways. Julia’s storytelling is superb, with the witty banter and the supporting cast you also love. Love, Love, Love this book!
The final book in Julia Kent's Whatever It Takes series was a good read and wrapped up the series well!
Ranney and Tom have a mutual attraction from the beginning, but there is an age gap and he's part of a wedding she's working on. The two of them had lots of chemistry and it was interesting watching them work out their developing relationship. I really enjoyed the mix of humor, fun, romance, and a little bit of drama.
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
Never Marry the Best Man by Julia Kent is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy that sparkles with wit, charm, and irresistible chemistry. Julia Kent’s signature humor shines through every page, delivering quirky characters, hilarious situations, and a love story that’s both heartwarming and delightfully unpredictable. It’s the perfect blend of snark and sweetness, making it a must-read for anyone who loves romance with a side of chaos. Pure joy from start to finish!
This is the fourth book in the Whatever it Takes series and it was really quite a welcome addition. We had the other unconventional romance stories and this was the age gap, marriage of convenience and it has quite a few twists. As with all of this author’s books, it’s full of laughs and quirky people that are well crafted enough to be as real as fictional people can be made. Excellent story and I enjoyed the hell out of it.
The (sadly) final book in the Whatever It Takes series hits all the marks for me. Exquisitely funny as a Julia Kent usually is but it is more than that. It is full of heart and introspection. It is full of love (I mean, they ARE Wedding Protectors and that is all about love right?), and of self-realization. Learning that you deserve to be loved in all of the forms it may take, be it your child(ren), your parent(s), your friends, your co-workers and most of all by that one special person who sees you in all your iterations and loves you exactly as you are. Ranney learns that she is more than a mom, more than a daughter and more than the work that gives her purpose. Tom provides that meaning and that joy and that FUN she deserves. Is she willing to take the chance with a much younger man? Find out in this hilariously, sweet, schmexy story.
Loved this newest book. Ranney and Tom are practically immediate romantic partners, despite their age differences. The question is will they allow the people around them to Influence and inflict their prejudices and push them apart. There is so much fun, in spite of the naysayers. Grab this book, it is a great read.
A book with heart. Older woman younger man, fake marriage. As they fall in love they will realize how much in common they have. Ranney has a hard time with the age difference. Will she allow love to overcome her doubts? Interesting characters and a great story. This author always writes a great story.
Another great story from Julia Kent. Ranney and Tom had an unusual meeting, but their chemistry was off the charts right from the beginning. Tom had to work hard for Ranney to accept their age difference as this was her stumbling block. Once Ranney realised that Tom loved her she put her heart and soul into living him right back.
A wonderful story of a June - December match. Including "meet cutes," several of them, and just the perfect timing of fate to bring our couple together. The combination of Renney and Tom explores the social expectations of friends and family. And explains how love can conquer all.
What a lovely series of books! Well crafted and from a different perspective, the staff of wedding security officers ready to thwart any problems are second to none. This series charts each members passage to love and marriage whilst problem solving on the way. A genius idea Me Kent and makes for great reading!
I liked this book. I enjoyed the reverse age gap. Ranney and Tom fit together well. I liked that they were mature. The story has some funny moments but has plenty of emotion as well. I liked the plot. Overall it was a good book I read in a couple hours.
