A swoon-worthy romantic suspense filled with thrilling twists, undeniable chemistry, and an ever-evolving web of mysteries.
Theo I would do anything for my daughter. Including marrying my sister's best friend. A man that drove me crazy because he was inexplicably calm. A man that made me feel cared for in ways I didn’t know possible. A man that would help me keep custody of my daughter.
And just when I thought everything was going right in my life, the Cult of Creatio reared its head and threatened the most important person to me.
My daughter.
Oliver I didn’t make rash decisions. I was smart and methodical with my decisions. But when it came to Theodora James, my best friend's sister, all rational thinking went out the window.
That’s why I proposed on a whim in a coffee shop.
That’s why I married her only a week later.
But how would I keep her safe when the cult that threatened our family was hidden in the shadows we were only now bringing to light?
Did you know anyone can write a book? Well, they can because H.J. Cartwright did. Born and raised in small town Utah, H.J. Cartwright has been a reader her entire life and fell in love with the world of writing. She loves all things romance, 80's themed, music, and suspense. Writing a book was never something she imagined, but something she had always dreamt of.
Following Fortunes Is a romantic suspense that covers the marriage of convenience between Theodora and Oliver, child abuse of Theo and her siblings, the cult of creatio, kidnapping, and family drama. It is the second book of a 4 book series “The Advocates”. Yes, I will read the next two and, Yes I can’t wait for the next two to be released.
Remember this is an ARC review so some of this might still change…. Also this is only my personal opinion and my likes might be your dislikes and vise versa.
So here we go, I’m giving it 4 stars because although the character development was very detailed, the pacing was steady through the whole book, the story line was catchy, and there was some quotes in there that had my heart wither sobbing or laughing, there was also some parts of the book that were kind of repetitive or unrealistic.
For example in the first 3-4 chapters the author takes us back and forth between MMC and FMC point of views but a lot of the conversations feel like they were taken from one chapter and transferred to another. This gets better as the book goes on and even though she continues to go back and forth between narratives and different point of views it no longer has that generic feel to it and the two point of views, although they describe the same idea they are no longer worded exactly the same which gives the characters individuality.
Another reason why I didn’t quite give it a higher review is because some parts felt forced. For example;
“ Bath time Violet, you have syrup from your head to your toes.
She smiled and wiggled her toes as if to check. I’ll race ya. Before I could blink, she was off in a full-on sprint.
I chuckled and ran after her. No daughter of mine would beat me at a foot race. I picked her up halfway to the bathroom and barreled us through the doors where we ended up laughing so hard our stomachs hurt.”
This scenario doesn’t happen in real life… yes moms do chase their kids, tickle them, and laugh with them, but this just felt so fake inserted into this chapter since this particular scenario happened to be that single mom Theo was getting ready for work and her 6 year old (violet) was getting ready for school made a mess and had to take a bath potentially making them both late to their destinations. When my kids get full of syrup, I normally don’t find it funny, I honestly tend to find it a bit annoying and frustrating, especially if it happens to be before I walk out to head to work and drop them off at school. A similar scenario happened toward the end of the book where the sister (Theo), the aunt (Jackie), the niece (violet), and the brother in law (Oliver) end up rolling around on the floor tickling each other laughing on the grass. In my opinion, normal families don’t roll around in the grass WITH their brother in law tackling and then tickling each other… at least not where I live lol.
Overall, the plot was intriguing, it had me on the edge of my seat throughout most of it, it made me laugh, it made me sad. I didn’t want to stop reading because I just HAD to know what happened with Theo, Oliver, their marriage of convenience and the culty freaky stuff.
Again this is only my personal opinion. I hope you enjoy the book.
Following Fortunes by H.J. Cartwright continues the story of the James siblings and their unfortunate connection to a cult that’s supposed to be a myth. The cult needs them to fulfill its prophecy but they just want to live their lives with their small but mighty family & (dreamy MMC) partners. This series has made me cry, made my heart race, made me laugh, and made me swoon over the love interests.
H.J. Cartwright’s writing style is fast paced, fun, and easy to follow. I highly recommend this series (and anything else she writes in the future).
Oliver can get👏it!👏 There is just something irresistible about a man who loves and protects a child 🥵 I love a fake dating/marriage of convenience trope and this was a bit of a slow burn with a satisfying ending.
I liked that through the relationship, Oliver seemed to grow up and Theo finally learned to open up, trust and rely on someone else for help.
We get more info about the Cult of Creatio and its definitely interesting. I just wish we would get more solutions at the end of the books. The very end was great though! 👀
H.J. Cartwright’s The Advocates series is a captivating blend of romance, suspense, and supernatural intrigue, anchored by the James siblings and their entanglement in a centuries-old cult that traces back to the Salem Witch Trials. Across the four-book series, each sibling steps into the spotlight, bringing with them unique emotional arcs, romantic journeys, and pieces of a dark familial legacy that slowly comes into focus. Overall Impressions The series opens strong, with the first book establishing an eerie, romantic atmosphere and a compelling mystery. Cartwright’s writing is immersive and descriptive, especially in the early installments, weaving an addictive narrative that balances emotional vulnerability, romantic tension, and creeping suspense. The cult storyline initially grips the reader with shadowy hints, historical echoes, and supernatural threads, elements that tease but rarely overwhelm. However, as the series progresses, cracks begin to show. While the mystery remains intriguing, the cult's presence shifts from central narrative force to romantic catalyst. Inconsistencies begin to emerge: some supernatural elements (like the ominous shadows in photographs or unexplained phone calls) fade without resolution, and important revelations are often sidestepped with convenient distractions, emotional hesitation, forgetfulness, or misdirection. Themes of destiny and familial bonds remain the backbone of the series. Each sibling appears fated not only to a role within the cult but also to a soulmate, a narrative choice reinforced by the dual POV format that deepens emotional stakes. Cartwright excels in portraying nuanced family dynamics and drawing emotional parallels between the James siblings and their partners, especially through mirrored parental relationships. These moments of reflection foster character growth and elevate the emotional resonance of each romance. Yet, the plot leans heavily on coincidence. Key discoveries often feel orchestrated rather than earned, and secondary characters occasionally serve as plot tools rather than fully fleshed-out individuals. Despite these flaws, Cartwright’s ability to craft tender, vulnerable moments, often paired with well-executed spicy scenes, keeps the story grounded and emotionally engaging. Book 2 : Theo & Oliver Shifting focus to Jackie’s older sister Theo and her best friend Oliver, Book 2 dives into a marriage-of-convenience romance with golden-retriever energy, single parenthood, and a slow-burn miscommunication trope. The pacing picks up here, and while the romance feels a bit rushed, the longstanding connection between the leads makes it believable within the narrative. Cult revelations deepen, yet the complexity of the plot begins to feel unwieldy. Secondary characters often act as buffers to move things along, and some romantic developments feel slightly manufactured. Still, the emotional beats hit home, especially through the continued exploration of family parallels.
Following Fortunes is that rare kind of romantic suspense that keeps you on edge and in your feels at the same time. This book isn’t just about danger lurking in shadows — it’s about the emotional burdens characters carry with them into every risk, every connection, and every heartbeat-fastening moment. From the first page, you’re pulled into a world where trust is fragile and loyalty is everything, and the slow burn between our leads makes the tension feel both inevitable and fiercely personal.
Cartwright does such a masterful job of writing tension that you don’t just read the fear — you feel it. Every brush of proximity, every quiet glance, and every time their walls crack just a little makes their connection more powerful. It’s not a love that explodes instantly; it’s one that creeps in, seeded through shared danger, whispered thoughts, and the unspoken truths that hang in the air far longer than they should. Their chemistry is electric not because it’s loud, but because it’s so desperately earned.
What truly elevates this installment is how deeply it invests in emotional vulnerability. These are characters who have armor, who shouldn’t let anyone in, and yet find themselves letting down their defenses not through a grand gesture, but through persistence, honesty, and shared hardships. The suspense in the plot keeps adrenaline high, but what keeps your heart in the story is the way Cartwright handles connection — nuanced, raw, and real.
If you love romantic suspense that is equal parts breath-catching and heart-wringing, where danger builds backdrop and love builds slowly from the ashes of fear and hesitation, Following Fortunes is an unforgettable journey. It honors pain, perseveres through uncertainty, and proves that sometimes the hardest path forward is the one that leads to the people worth fighting for.
Tropes: romantic suspense • slow burn • emotional depth • trust & danger • found family • partners in crisis • guarded hearts meeting
I liked Diluted Truths, but I loved Following Fortunes!
I really loved Theo. I liked her a lot in book one, but getting to read her story just made me love her anymore. She is hilarious, fiesty, strong, brave, stubborn, determined and sassy, but she is also reserved . She is the best mama to Violet and would do literally anything for her as she proved in the last book and this book. She is also a wonderful sister and friend. If Theo trusts and loves you then you have her loyalty to no end. I loved being able to watch her grow and come out of her shell in this book especially in the love/romance part of her life. Her and VI's relationship is just loving and amazing. I love Violet and her fierce and feisty self!
Oliver. Oh man Oliver is just the sweetest man. I loved him in book one and book two. I loved him as Jackie's best friend and I love him in this book as a friend, husband and father even if it is marriage of convience. Oliver is a man who would do anything for anyone. He stretches himself so thin between work, school, helping Theo and Violet and all things with the Cult. The way he protected Theo and Vi so fiecrly.
Theo and Oliver together were the best partners. They made the best team and watching their relationship grow through the whole book was beautiful. I loved how he stepped up without question especially for Vi because his arrangement with Theo had perks for him too. These two together were opposites but they just fit so perfectly and balanced out one another.
I just love this whole group and how they are friends and love one another and work together to figure out what's going on with this cult and the James' siblings.
That ending though. Man, now I gotta wait until 2025! I am beyond excited for book three and that story!
🌟Marriage of Mutual Benefit 🌟Resilient FMC 🌟Cinnamon Roll MMC 🌟Mystery 🌟Suspense 🌟Cult 🌟He Falls First 🌟Dual POV 🌟🌶️🌶️.5
*Following Fortunes* is an absolutely gripping and heartwarming story, packed with mystery, suspense, and a slow-burn romance that will leave you swooning. I devoured it in one sitting and found myself completely hooked from start to finish.
As the second book in *The Advocates* series, *Following Fortunes* centers on Theo James, a resilient single mom, as she navigates life in Eugene, OR, with her daughter Violet. Each book in the series follows a different James sibling as they become entangled in the dangerous mystery of a secretive cult invading their lives, and this installment is no exception.
Theo is a wonderfully complex character—her selflessness as a mother shines through, and her close bond with her siblings Jackie and Kai adds depth to her story. The way she finds her footing in a new town, new relationship, balancing motherhood with the ever-present threat of the Cult of Creatio, was captivating. Her journey is about more than just survival—it's about love, growth, and opening her heart again.
Enter Oliver, the best friend of Theo’s sister Jackie. He’s the kind of character that immediately stands out—a true top-tier hero. Oliver is brilliant, compassionate, and effortlessly steps into a fatherly role with Violet. Though their marriage initially starts as one of mutual benefit, it’s clear from the beginning that Oliver is serious about Theo. Having harbored a crush on her for years, he’s more than ready to show her the love and stability she deserves.
The chemistry between Theo and Oliver is everything you want in a slow-burn romance. Their relationship unfolds beautifully, with moments of tenderness and longing that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The way they come together when the cult reappears, supporting each other through the growing danger, deepens their bond in a way that feels both organic and deeply satisfying. When Theo finally realizes she’s falling for Oliver, it’s the kind of moment that makes your heart flutter.
The mystery surrounding the Cult of Creatio is just as enthralling. The story weaves in suspenseful twists and turns, keeping you on edge as you try to unravel who the cult members are and what they truly want. The writing is sharp and engaging, with fantastic character development, witty humor, and a plot that keeps building in intensity. And that cliffhanger? It left me stunned and desperate for the next book!
*Following Fortunes* is a beautifully written, emotionally rich story that blends romance, mystery, and suspense in the best way. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this captivating series!
I finished this book in a day, that’s how hooked I was. 😂 This is the second book about the James siblings. This one focuses on Theo’s and Oliver’s POV.
Theo would do anything to protect her daughter, including marrying her sisters best friend. While trying to return back to normal life after certain events in book 1, Theo navigates her new partnership with Oliver, an ugly custody battle and of course the cult. The cult makes an appearance again as everyone utilizes whatever resources they can, desperate to find out more.
I liked that you could tell the difference between Jackie’s POV from book 1 and Theo’s from book 2. Although they both had horrible childhoods, it shows how differently Theo handled everything compared to Jackie including when their brother Nate died. It also showed that despite being calm and collected on the outside, Oliver is calculating and would do anything to protect his new family. We also see a little more about Kai that sets up nicely for his story.
The found family aspect is SOO strong and I loved it! It showed that sometimes the family you find is strong than blood family. There were a few twists and turns I didn’t see coming. And the ending, be prepared. How could you end it like that?!! (Not in a bad way). If it wasn’t for me finishing the book at 1am I would’ve rushed into the 3rd.
uhm… hello?? what WAS THAT ENDING?? the author and me are going to therapy and she’s paying because what do you mean I have to wait for months now???
I read Diluted Truths last month and I enjoyed it, but I already knew the series was going to keep getting better (I called it on my review of that one, I’m seriously considering buying a lottery ticket or something) and I was right!!! I am OBSESSED with Theo and Oliver, this man is literally perfect and I cannot with how cute they both are omg!!! I love that they call each other the same nickname and I love how much of a simp they are for each other :’)
The plot thickens quite a lot with this second book, although there still are multiple unanswered questions: what happened to Kai? where the hell has Nate being all this time? Are Theo and Oli going to have another baby? Will Jack fix things with Fai? Who in the world is this cult and what do they want?
I feel like the writing has improved quite a lot too (not that it was ever bad but you know what I mean), it was easier to follow and it didn’t feel repetitive or monotonous. All in all I cannot wait to know what’s coming next!
I devoured this book in less than 24 hours. A great continuation of these characters’ story. I like the concept of these interconnected stories & characters… similar to series that are “interconnected standalones” where each book focuses on different characters from a shared group. But with this series, there’s a continuing plot, which makes it stand out from other series’ I’ve read. It’s unique and fun! I loved Theo & Oliver’s story. I loved getting to know Olly better, especially. What a sweetheart, but also super sexy to see the protective alpha male side come out when needed. I just about melted the first time he referred to Theo & Violet as “my girls”….and the moment Vi called him Daddy. So so sweet. Love these three together. I still ultimately enjoyed Book 1 more. I felt there was more action within the plot, whereas this one felt much more focused on the relationships and the cult plot taking a little more of a backseat. So the book just seemed to move at a slower pace overall. But, I have a feeling that will pick up with the next book! So excited for the character development in the next installment!!!

Following Fortunes drags you even deeper into the mystery of the Cult of Creatio, but this time, the stakes are personal. Theo would do anything to keep custody of her daughter—including marrying Oliver, her sister’s best friend. What starts as a practical arrangement quickly turns into something much more complicated.
Theo is the definition of a badass protective mama, and Oliver? A walking green flag.Their chemistry is undeniable, their marriage might have been rushed, but their connection is anything but. And just as they start to settle in, the cult resurfaces—this time, threatening the one person Theo loves most: her daughter, Violet.
Speaking of Violet—her sassy one-liners had me cackling. I want to put her in my pocket and take her everywhere.
Suspense? Check. Marriage of convenience? Check. A perfect mix of emotional damage and laugh-out-loud moments? Absolutely.
Full review- Something about this series has me in a chokehold. I read this book so fast!! It felt shorter than the first and had less twists and you know the basics of the cult and what’s going on. I still want the next one right now 🤣. I really enjoy the characters in this series, they’re so relatable. I definitely am a huge fan of H.J. Cartwright after this series and need to find some more to read. Read the first one, but then definitely read this one 😂
“You look as her if she hung the moon and the stars and fixes your broken heart little by little with each moment each moment you’re with her.”
A suspenseful romance that kept me on my toes and yet again, I couldn’t put the book down. Between the mystery and the romance and even a hint of spice.
- Marriage of convenience - best friend’s sister - found family - tortured past
Ugh, this series has me so consumed!! I absolutely can not wait for Fates Demise!
Even though their world may be in chaos, dodging more twists and turns… these two made a pact to help each other. Marriage of convenience is always a good time, this one didn’t fail! The sweet man Olly, always calm always the problem solver swooped in.. not to save the day (he’s better than that) but to stand by Theo’s side to help strengthen her 💜 still crazy things happening! While I did get some answers the last 10 pages my jaw on ground and I did yell out “ NO FREAKING WAY” so obviously… onto boom 3! 🙌🏽
This was sooo wholesome!! After the first book I expected this to be darker than it was but I liked that this book had a bigger focus on the sweeter romance and found family side I loved Oliver, Theo and Violet. They’re the perfect little family and Violet calling Olivet Daddy at the end made me CRY I am actually so scared going into the next book because I know Nate‘s story will cause some DAMAGE 😭
arc review!! this book was soo good! i didn’t read the 1st book in the series so i was really going into it blind. and i really liked it. theo and oliver have my heart and it was sweet and cute (i mean until the plot twist at the end) theo’s daughter is actually so cute i love her. this book was really good. and i am so excited for the next book! i already know it’s going to be crazyyy!
I read this in a few hours. I couldn’t put it now. It picks up pretty soon after book 1 yet from a different POV. I really liked Theo and Oliver’s story and how he fell in love with her and Vi. She is so adorable.
The ending left on a cliffhanger so of course I’m diving into book 3 as soon as I’m done with this review 🤣
Wow what a story with twists and turns! H.J took us on one wild ride. I really enjoyed the characters in this series, Theo and Oliver oh they were wonderful!! Oliver was just the sweetest man!! They truly were the best partners! Excited to see what comes next in the series!!
I love that my sweet Olli-pop wore down Theo with his awesomeness. Violet is my favorite character in the entire series, with her childlike wonder and wisdom. This one like the last one ends with a literal bang…
Once again, I'm left absolutely shook by The Advocates. When I saw that it was an Oliver and Theo book, I was hesitant... thinking, wait! I need more Jackie and Will! But only a few chapters in and I was absolutely swooning. I liked seeing the story through other characters' perspective. Just like in book 1, there was a lingering feeling that something was coming and then when it did come, it shook me to my core. And just when I thought it was over, the epilogue made it near impossible to breathe. Not sure how I'll manage to wait for book 3 to get more info on what's going on and see what's coming next!
I thought this was a great continuation of the series. I thought Theo and Oliver were adorable and I loved seeing Jackie and Will from another perspective.
I was excited to learn more about the cult. The mystery and suspense of it just pulled me in. Violet was absolutely adorable and Theo and Oliver seemed to balance each other really well.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. I definitely recommend!
Shoutout to the author for an ARC! This is my honest review.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat! Theo and Oliver are such a great team. Even though they both had their own agenda in getting married, in the end, it worked out for the best. And the mystery! I am not a big mystery reader, but I have been lately! And I was trying to put the pieces together as I continued devouring this book. I was far off, but I had so much fun seeing Theo and Oliver and even Violet's relationship come together. I loved how the side characters in this book helped it just become so much more fun, romantic, and witty. I cannot WAIT to read the next, and for everyone else to read it too!
