Confessions is a sharp and bloody comedy horror romance novella, full of strange characters and witty dialogue. Inspired by shows like Angel and True Blood, with a bunch of twists and character turns baked in to take the reader on a wild ride. Come learn about the dark underbelly of this sleepy American town and the evil that dwells within, as well as all the laugh out loud ridiculousness coming from the crazy mind of James Wright.
James Wright is a British author of genre fiction, mostly focusing on horror and comedy. He has published two books so far, with plans to release many more! He is also a Librarian who specialises in book repair, you can find him wandering the shelves looking for interesting covers and novels in need of some tlc. James is present on multiple social media platforms under the name JamesWriteSurprisingly, including: Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, Youtube & Tiktok follow him there for writing updates and lots of library content! In his spare time, James watches lots of horror films, and especially loves comedy horror. He also plays board games and writes articles on wrestling, basically he's just a big ol' nerd!
This was bat shit funny! Dark humour, laugh out loud moments (one in particular, which I won't spoil, but makes me giggle if I think about it. The writing style is really vivid too so I think that's why it made me laugh so much, as it was more like I watched it on television) and B-Movie style chaos!
It was a fun adventure and I really enjoyed the banter, especially between the Librarian and Peter. There's a few twists and turns that deffo keep the book moving at a fun and quick pace! I think this deffo works novella size too as there is a good balance of character development, action and fun without being too over done or bogged down with detail.
If you're looking for dark, blood soaked chaos, set in America but with witty British humour, then this is for you.
Confessions of a Demonically Possessed Librarian is an inventive horror comedy, and all I can say is, sequel please!
The story takes place in the town of Depletion. At first, it seems like a fairly ordinary town, but the deeper we dive into the story, the more that perspective unravels. The last quarter of the book introduces some really intriguing and unique facets of the town, and I need to know more!
The pacing was a little off in places. The early part of the book in particular became a little stagnant at times, while some of the potentially interesting elements, like the librarian's first encounter with Daisy, were glossed over. I think it's worth noting that the story originated as a Wattpad story, and I think the slightly muddled beginning is residual from that. But by the latter part of the book, Wright found his stride. Those last few chapters I could not put down. Even though the ending was satisfying, part of me was still a bit disappointed when I ran out of pages.
The characters were fun. I never would have guessed I would become invested in a dog hand puppet, but here we are. I also really appreciated the way Wright handled Daisy. That first chapter from her perspective was so refreshing. And I loved her role in the climax. I really want to see more of them!
If you enjoy horror comedies, this may be right up your alley.
All my fellow books know the allure of spending time at the library. Piles of books stacked and stuffed into any bag you can carry. Now imagine there aren't just books, but a charismatic librarian that spends his time possessed by spirits. It's a heavenly blend of the macabre and book nerdy comfort found within the shelves of the best place on earth! Give it a read, you won't be disappointed.
