I Saw Her First

Rate this book
Passion ignites when a sweet barista and widowed father give in to their forbidden attraction in this steamy, emotional romance about the power of love to heal grief.

Daisy

I never planned on being a virgin at twenty-five, stuck in a dead-end job. And I definitely didn’t plan to fall for Weston, the married hottie in a suit who likes my daily coffee art. At least I think he does. He doesn’t smile much.

Then I meet Jesse. He’s charming and more than happy to relieve me of my V-card, but is he really the one? My world turns upside down when I learn Jesse's father is Weston, my secret crush. Even more surprising? Weston isn't married.

And that changes everything.

Weston

After losing my wife three years ago, I’ve lived in a haze of pain and grief, made worse by my son Jesse’s refusal to talk to me. The only light in the darkness is Daisy, the beautiful barista at my local coffee shop. There’s a connection between us despite our age difference, and I intend to make her mine—until Jesse introduces Daisy as his girlfriend.

Seeing them together drives me crazy, especially as I watch him take her for granted. The more time I spend around her, the more I want her for myself, but it might cost me my son…

Even if I saw her first.

Here’s what you can expect from I Saw Her First:
♥ forbidden romance (ex-boyfriend’s dad/son’s ex-girlfriend)
♥ age gap (she’s 25, he’s 43)
♥ virgin heroine
♥ widowed hero
♥ “You’re mine”
♥ dirty-talking MMC
♥ no cheating
♥ Brooklyn Heights & beach house setting
♥ interconnected standalone
♥ dual POV

Please note: this book is a steamy, open-door romance, told in dual first person point of view. It contains cursing and on-page sex, including dirty talk. There are discussions of grief, and there is on-page marijuana use (once, by a side character). Additionally, the heroine is a virgin, and the book contains an age gap of eighteen-nineteen years, with an older man/younger woman dynamic (the heroine is 25, the hero 43-44). It is intended for readers 18 years and older.

”there’s love in grief—love that has nowhere to go when you lose someone—but there’s grief in love, too, knowing that one day you could lose the person you love.”

❦ age gap
❦ virgin heroine
❦ widowed hero
❦ ex-boyfriend’s dad
❦ forbidden romance

resuming this novel in one word? ADDICTIVE. i consumed it in one sitting. throughout the narrative the forbidden romance arc was so deliciously orchestrated that it was unthinkable to not crave and devour the next page, the next chapter.

Weston and Daisy, the main characters, were absolutely loveable. i adored their camaraderie at the beginning and how they amicably teased each other at every encounter, their alchemy was undeniable.

Weston had a tumultuous relationship with his son even before Daisy entered the picture but everything intensified when his son started disrespecting her in their relationship, openly. i frankly did not feel an ounce of remorse for the son when the main characters sort of “went behind his back” and omitted to tell him the truth about their feelings. but i did not loathe his character either, he had some evident problems managing and expressing his emotions because of his mother’s death—the male main character’s late wife— which translated into a raisonnable amount of emotionally charged scenes.

Daisy, on the other hand, had her own demons, chained to a ribambelle of regrets and a non-existent relationship with her relatives. but the emblematic facet of her personality was that she was always cheerful and kind. she was selfless and put everyone’s needs before hers. Daisy was an awesome female lead and her shared passion for photography with Weston concluded to be one of the most beautiful love declarations i have ever read !

all in all, it was an enjoyable read. even through it would’ve been perfect if some nicknames were changed here and there, im certainly counting it as a new comfort read!!

many thanks to the author for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Holy shiiiiiiii --- "I Saw Her First" by Jen Morris gripped me from start to finish and never let up! Talk about STEAMY! I am an age-gap newbie, so I really hope all of them are like this because 🥵🥵🥵. I really enjoyed getting to know Daisy and Weston, who are a sunshine/grumpy duo. They both have a lot of trauma to overcome and baggage from their pasts. This story is deceptively deep. I remained engaged in thr blossoming relationship between Weston and Daisy the longer they know each other. I also loooooved the dirty talk, too. You're going to be soooo obsessed with this book. Thanks for Jen Morris for the chance to read an ARC of her book! All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

Quick Opinion:
I technically skimmed the last ~45ish% so I'm not feeling like using my typical review template. I struggled with this one. I think I stopped fully reading once the "babygirl" nickname came out and I cringed too much. It didn't feel like it fit. It didn't feel like the typical angst that I enjoy with these taboo type storylines. Yes, she dated the H's son. Yes, she kissed the son (but didn't have sex or develop any strong feelings). Yes, she was ~19 years younger than the H. Yes, she was a virgin. And yes, she was crushing on the H well before she got with the son/knew their relation. Honestly, I was...bored. The few GR friend reviews on this were pretty great, so it could just be a me thing again 🤷🏻‍♀️

May September Romance

This was meant to be an honest to goodness story as opposed to romance porn and it mostly succeeded. It was a little slow and way too much drama, but it didn’t kill me with too many unnecessary spice scenes.

The writing was good even if the plot was thin. Three stars.

I Saw Her First is an age gap romance with a splash of taboo. Daisy has had a secret crush on Weston who frequents the coffee shop she works at every morning. He appears to be off the market if the wedding ring is any indication though. So when she literally runs into someone else and hits it off-she decides it's time to move on and gives Jesse a chance. Come to find out, Jesse is Weston's son. She's about to embark on a roller-coaster of a ride from here.

This one captivated me from the start. Drawn in by both characters and learning their stories. There is emotion, angst, chemistry and feels that kept me turning the pages for some time. I did find it lost a little traction for me later on in the story though. Perhaps it was 'babygirl'- I'm sorry, it's just not a fave for me. In saying that- what didn't work for me, will ultimately be what draws in someone else- so it’s worth the mention! This book slow burns into some dirty talking spice. But there are also tender firsts. Growth and healing too. I liked it!

3.5☆ - I saw age gap and said yes please! This was a sweet story, with major forbidden vibes and a whole lot of spice which made for a fun read! It also covered love after loss in a really beautiful way.

I just felt like something was missing for me unfortunately and I struggled to connect with the characters to get fully invested in the story. The constant back and forth and conflict with the son became frustrating as well as the extreme focus on Daisy’s virginity. There was still a lot in here I enjoyed and being my first read by the author; I’m definitely interested in reading others by her.

Ex's dad trope is a palette cleanser trope for me, not one I normally seek out. However, this one pleasantly surprised me. The way the story unfolded and how each person came into one another's lives seemed genuine. The story had characters you rooted for and a plot that had some substance.
Daisy and Wes were barista and daily customer where interest and intrigue grew daily. When one had finally mustered up the courage and one had resolved to date someone, timing wasn't on their side and Wes' son was at the right place at the right time. The rest of the story had its ups and downs for these characters but it was not an unpleasant ride.

Let’s not dance around it: if Birthday Girl is the angsty, slow-burn anthem with all the ache and complexity, this is its cheekier cousin—the one that ditches some of the angst in favour of faster heat and fewer emotional bruises. The premise? Forbidden romance with a capital F: she’s 25, he’s 43, and oh yeah—she used to date his son. Wes is magnetic, confident, and walks the line between protective and dangerously tempting. I liked him… except for his oddly intense fixation on her v-card, which, honestly, made me raise an eyebrow more than once.

Daisy, our FMC, is not as bogged down by a tragic backstory, though she’s carrying her own quiet traumas. She’s a touch annoying here and there, but nothing fatal. Jesse (the son/ex) is just… meh. The conflict felt manufactured, like the book knew it needed a climax but wasn’t quite sure how to earn it.

Here’s the thing: Birthday Girl did this particular brand of taboo better. The longing, the slow unravel, the gut punch? That book had layers. This one? More of a “we shouldn’t, but screw the rules” sprint to the sheets. That’s not inherently bad—it’s just a different flavour.

So if you’re in the mood for something less angsty, more insta-lusty, and not pretending to be a deep moral quandary, this could be your jam. For me, it was a fun, guilty little fling of a read—but not one I’ll be daydreaming about later.

⚠️SPOILERS⚠️

This was okay. I liked the book, but I just couldn’t really connect to it.

Safety:
•Owd: not really but this is dead wife trope so…it’s a little complicated, she died 3 years ago and H is grieving her loss.
•Omd: at first h was dating his son, nothing happened between them except making out and groping, H once caught them making out.
•h is V.
•H was only with his wife.
•apparently even after they got together he still loved his dead wife but just in a different way, and h even kept the dead wife’s pictures, and they stayed in the same house and slept in the same bed🥴🥴🥴, in my opinion that part was super weird, but as long as the h is alright with it ig.

Ex-boyfriend's dad romance is always tricky, for me I'm only for it if the main character is at least 20, otherwise it can feel a little gross. Thankfully Daisy is 25 and Wes is 43/44. The story is written perfectly to where you don't feel bad about the dad getting with his son's ex. There is a lot of grief happening in this book, like I mean everyone is dealing with it, but it feels real and it's handled thoughtfully and elegantly. I loved watching the characters find themselves again after their tragedy and seeing them grow as people and heal.

Also the spice is luscious!

I loved this! Such an enjoyable addictive read. Another great book amongst the forbidden fruit series.

I loved Wes & Daisy, their characters are loveable and I felt like I could relate to Daisy, feeling stuck & lost in a position. She was an awesome main character, cheerful, kind, selfless and compassionate.
Wes, I wanted to give a big hug too, losing his wife and eventually his son walking out on him lead him to be in a dark place. Meeting Daisy really brightened up his world.

This was full of hot spice, Jen knows how to write those scenes!

✨4.5…rounded up ✨ Ex boyfriends dad could have been dicey, loved it!! Loved the trope and the spice but also enjoyed being on the journey with the characters as they worked through their own grief and traumas and came back together. It was sorrowful in parts but beautiful.

Age gap romances aren't my fav, especially when you pair it with the ex boyfriend's dad but Jen Morris can write this trope like no other and I couldn't help rooting for virgin Daisy and grieving widow Weston to find their HEA together.

Things are complicated when Weston's son ends up dating Daisy for a while when she thinks Weston is still married but the way she cares more about Wes's relationship with his son really proved how much she wanted the best for them both.

It was great seeing Violet and Kyle from the first book in the series and there was even more love for Brooklyn in this book. If you like a steamy age gap with great mental health rep don’t miss this one!!

Highly recommended and perfectly fine to read as a standalone. I voluntarily read and reviewed and early copy of this book and all opinions are my own!

🔥Steam level: open door, slow burn with some explicit scenes, including sex toys

There were things I loved about this book and things that bugged me. Overall I really enjoyed it!

First off, I’m not normally a forbidden romance girlie, and I wouldn’t even be reading this if it weren’t Jen Morris and I weren’t an unapologetic stan 😂. I loved that this book didn’t feel icky, just messy in the way real life is messy. (Cue the gif of Marie Kondo saying “I love mess”.) I had so much empathy and love for these characters by the end that I was ready to throw hands with anyone who said they couldn’t be together. I also really loved the spice (the dirty talk tho 🔥).

There were a few things that felt clunky or took me out of the story. I absolutely cannot with “babygirl” as a pet name in any context that doesn’t involve an actual baby (listen it is very likely this is just a personal ick), and there were a few lines that felt forced—like at one point the FMC says she feels like a middle aged woman in a young woman’s body, and I was like “oh okay I’m supposed to think ‘she’s mature for her age!!!’ or whatever”.

Overall I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. (God I’ve always wanted to say that!! 🥰)

If you like your FMCs infantilised then this is the book for you!

I was ok with the first book in this series but this one was pretty icky to me. The 25yo FMC was a listless virgin barista and the 45yo MMC is the dad of the guy she dated for 3 whole months. It was just all kinds of weird. He gets so proud of her for taking one (1) picture. She talks a lot about how she just wants to greet him with dinner when he gets home every night. She is the same age as his son. She has a twin bed and this 45yo man with his own Brooklyn brownstone almost takes her v-card on it.

I totally understand the fantasy of having a man take care of you but not like this

Jen Morris has cured two separate book hangovers for me with the Forbidden on Fruit Street series. These books are so addicting. I can't get enough. I was sad the moment this book ended because I wanted more.

These age gap book give me so much anxiety though. There's always that one person they're trying to keep the it from and this one was no different. The time they were together and keeping it from Wes' son Jesse was so freaking stressful!

Daisy and Weston are everything. I loved them from page one. They have palpable chemistry. It's honestly kind of unbelievable that the ex boyfriend didn't notice 😂. I loved them together so much and the slow burn was physically painful. I was screaming at my Kindle and at Jen in her DMs. But ooh it worth the wait. The spice in this book is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. It was an excellent time.

This book also covers grief remarkably well. The care that is taken when covering the subject is a testament to Jen's writing. I loved the parallels between Daisy and Wes' stories and how they healed both individually and together. They support each other in ways no one else has and it's really beautiful.

I definitely recommend this series and I can't wait to read more from Jen Morris. I will be going back to read her backlist while waiting for book 3 of this series.

Arc Review

I didn't think I would love book 2 more than the first one in this series but I was wrong. The tension and angst in this one was soooooo good.

Three years after losing his wife, Weston is still dealing with his grief. Over the past year though, he has been coming into the little cafe near his house every morning. When Daisy first noticed Weston walk into the cafe she works at a year ago, she made it her mission to get him to smile. Over the year she developed a crush on the older man, but never acted upon it due to him being married.

When Daisy meets a young man around her age, she decides to give him a chance. But then she discovers the man she's been seeing is the son of her crush. And it turns out he's not married.....

This book made my heart hurt so much. Not only is there the tension between Daisy and Weston, but also the estranged relationship between Weston and Jesse, his son, as well as dealing with grief.

Jen is amazing at writing complex characters who deal with common life struggles. The emotions that she makes me feel always tug at my heart strings and this one hit hard.

I also love that she writes age gaps that, as a reader, don't make me feel icky.

I Saw Her First by Jen Morris lived up to all my expectations!

Wes Abbott - 43 year old silver fox, dad to adult son Jesse, struggling with grief after his wife passed away three years ago.

Daisy Griffin - 25 year old barista at a crossroad in life with a heart longing to be back in photography; she's a virgin and is dating Wes's son.

When Daisy, Jesse, and Wes end up in the Abbott's vacation home together, tensions rise; one relationship falls apart, while chemistry blooms between Daisy and Wes. After all, it's almost like he saw her first!

Morris created the perfect friction between Daisy, Wes, and Jesse, as well as the right kind of animosity between Daisy and her parents. HUGE plusses in this son's ex-girlfriend, age gap romance, with absolutely no cheating!

Also: dual point of view, tension and chemistry, dirty talk and grief representation.

It was great catching up with Kyle and Violet again (from She Was Made For Me, the first in this Forbidden On Fruit Street series), but know that these books can truly be read as standalones!

I Saw Her First is a sexy, steamy, and hot, perfectly executed age gap romance!

Thank you Jen Morris for the complimentary digital ARC to read and review. Physical book purchased by myself (because of course I needed Wes to sit beside Kyle on my shelf)!

As always, Jen has absolutely smashed it out of the park with this age gap, exes dad, spicy but sweet romcom!
I blooming LOVE an age-gap romance, I think there's something so hot about it, and this was definitely HOT!
The theme of grief is apparent for both characters, and I felt like it was described so realistically and resolved in such beautiful ways for them both.
Of course, I loved to see Kyle and Violet from the first in this series feature, and something tells me we met our next older man, too. What is in the water on Fruit Street cos it is producing sweet and sexy men left, right and centre!
It's spicy, like really spicy, as you would come to expect from this author. If you prefer a closed doors romance, then this isn't for you. I loved all of their dirty talking, experimenting, and evolution into Daisy's sexual awakening.
It's also sweet as anything, Weston is an absolutely beautiful soul, and I loved seeing him open up and fight for his happiness.
There's nothing I disliked about this, I'd happily recommend it to anyone and can't wait for more!

The way Jen writes makes me compulsively want to read. If it’s a book you don’t want put down, it’s a good book. And this book followed that trend.

I REALLY liked the tension that was built from the forbidden factors of this book. It made the tension real and palpable in a way contemporary romance can’t seem to hit these days. I didn’t think I would like the “ex-boyfriend’s dad” element to the story, but Jen handled it really well.

The things that were missing for me were strong side support characters for each MC, and a little more emotional bridge to them falling for each other. The MC’s do have support characters at crucial moments, but the characters aren’t consistent, deeply connected to the mc’s, and are very sporadic. The emotional bridge for these two I believe is buried in the year they are getting to know each other, but we don’t get to see that. So it feels sort of rushed and thrown together when they finally connect.

The spice was really good, and the tension throughout really had me hooked on this story. I can’t wait ito keep reading what Jen writes!

I loved this book so much! I read the first in the series, She Was Made For Me, and it was great so I was excited to read this one! It’s a forbidden, age gap romance. It is a 25 year old Daisy who is a barista who falls for a 44 year old man who comes into her coffee shop every morning. She unknowingly starts to date his son, however. After they end things, they both realize they have feelings for each other and watching them fight it is hard, but man the pay off is so good. The slow burn is so great. They both suffered loss and end up bonding over that. I recommend this book if you enjoy taboo romance, steam, and a story that makes you feel so many feelings. It was the first book in awhile I couldn’t put down.

This is an interconnected standalone, and you don’t need to read the first book to read this one, although I recommend you do just because it’s awesome, too.

I received this book as an ARC and all my opinions are my own.

I’m not a huge fan of the age gap romance trope and I actually avoided the first book in this series because of it. But I LOVED Jen Morris’s Love in the City series and hated to miss another book of hers so I decided to give this a try. I’m so glad I did! It had all the great chemistry and tension I love in this author’s writing. The steamy scenes were 🔥🔥. And surprisingly, the age gap didn’t bother me too much! I liked both Daisy and Weston and thought they fit well together. I’m so glad I picked this up and now I want to read the first book in the series!

⭐️4. As with all Jen Morris books, her age gap romances are *chefs kiss*. I felt so many feelings throughout this book. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster, and I want to ride again and again. Daisy and Wes have such a sweet love story, full of longing, passion, and heartache. This book touches on grief in many ways. Grief from people passing, and from having to leave people behind. Grief from what you missed out on and what you could have had.
Jen Morris is an auto read for me, and the next book in the series is coming out soon! Another delicious age gap romance on the forbidden fruit street.

I’ve been a fan of Jen’s since the beginning, and she’s done it again! Taboo/forbidden romances aren’t always my cup of tea, but if Jen writes it, I’m reading it, and I’m glad I did!

I enjoyed Weston & Daisy’s story and watching them find themselves again after big losses in their lives. Their grief (loved ones passing) and the taboo/forbidden romance of Weston’s son’s ex girlfriend was handled so well in I Saw Her First. This was filled with so much heart and of course steam!! I can’t wait to see what Jen has up her sleeve in her next book!

This is an age gap romance between barista, Daisy (25) and her daily customer, Weston. (43/44) They both have interest in the other, but Daisy thinks he is married. (He is not.) Both of them are dealing with grief and healing. Plus, Weston has issues with his adult son, Jesse.

Age gap can sometimes come off as icky, but this story does not. It’s written beautifully. You can feel the love that Daisy and Wes have for each other, but there is the problem of Jesse, whom she dated briefly before Wes.

The story starts as slow burn, but when the steam starts…oh my. Weston is a bossy, dirty talker! The only thing that bothered me was Weston’s use of the term “babygirl” for Daisy. It felt so unnatural and it was said way too much.

I’m looking forward to more in this series.

Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Oh, I really did enjoy this book - as i have done with all of Jen’s other books too!! She is just an amazing writer who knows how to write a good book that we are all going to love!

I Saw Her First was a little bit more of a deeper read than her previous books (especially the Love In The City series) and it definitely had me hooked right from the very first page.

Jen knows how to lure us in with gorgeous and ‘real’ characters and I always end up falling desperately in love with them. Weston and Daisy were no exception, I warmed to them both straight away and I think that Weston has easily become my new book boyfriend - another one added to my ever growing list!!

I really loved how part of the story was set at the beach and it gave us a great comparison against New York City.

It was also a really nice touch to have little cameos from Kyle and Violet from Book One in the series, She Was Made For Me and I loved how we got little updates from their lives too!

There were sooooo many emotions in this book that my feelings were on a constant roller coaster.

It was sad and gritty and raw and towards the end it gave me goosebumps because I was so overwhelmed with emotion.

This was an absolute perfect book with just enough teasers to keep me wanting more!!

Loved it! Really enjoyed this one and loved all the tropes in the title (forbidden, age gap, boyfriends dad, virgin heroine). ISHF was even better than book 1 and I can't wait for the rest of the series. LOVED Weston, and Daisy was a sweetheart. Even liked the son by the end. Also nice feature of the couple from book 1 and other characters in the neighborhood.

Thank you so much to Jenn morris for the arc.
- this is an honest review .

So I want to stay by saying this is literally perfect. It’s giving birthday girl vibes by Penelope Douglas but in a sweeter softer more romantic way . ( considering this isn’t dark romance at all) .

I of course requested the arc ( filled out the form to apply for the arc. ) because of the exes dad trope and for the age gap of 18/19 years . Yes this is an age gap romance . The fmc daisy is 25 and the mmc is 43 . So I of course already was down for the taboo romance that this was going to be .

I just love how much wes and daisy have in common . It’s like so sweet to see these two bond over things they both enjoy and become closer . I love that they are just perfect for each other ( like they are just good for each other)

This whole book is definitely one that is a quick sweet book( one that also has a solid plot and was definitely enjoyable. This is the first book I’ve read by Jenn and I do indeed plan on reading more now that I’ve read this and enjoyed it .

The 3rd act breakup made sense . It wasn’t petty or because of a miscommunication/ misunderstanding it was for a valid reason

The ending was just chefs kiss like everything was just so perfect and happy .

The fmc does date both the mmc and his son during this book ( not at the same time ) There is no cheating .
