They didn’t plan the kiss. Or anything that followed.
Colton
When I kissed my best friend to shut up her judgmental family, I didn’t expect her to melt in my arms. Kiss me back. Hold me tight. I thought she didn’t feel for me the way I do, but this changes everything. Our friendship started the day I found her sleeping in her car, fresh off a betrayal that should’ve broken her. I cracked her protective shell and helped her start over. Now she’s become a part of me. It’s simple: this kiss is the beginning of our forever. But nothing with Kiara is simple. Not the wounds from her past. Not her struggles to succeed as a pastry chef. Not the reasons she fights her battles on her own. She turns me down? Fine. I’ll wait. She starts swiping right on other men? Absolutely not. Kiara doesn’t know it yet, but she’s already mine.
Kiara
This fake kiss wasn’t supposed to leave me breathless, aching for more, and wondering what if. Because Colton Harper doesn’t do anything halfway. Not kissing, not pretending, and definitely not loving. Now he wants to date for real, but I’m terrified. I built a new life in Emerald Creek, made friends who are my new family. Colton is my rock, and changing our friendship to dating could lead to losing everything. I’ve seen how love ends, and I won’t let that happen to us. He’s relentless though, so I cave in. He can be my first. Just once. No expectations. No heartbreak. When he refuses, I’m left with no choice but to swallow my disappointment and move on. But Colton can be very persuasive.

This is a friends-to-lovers romance that is gives you the sweet, steamy, and the emotionally delicious. It's cozy and I couldn't get enough of it.
Colton & Kiera's romance is filled with tenderness, vulnerability, and that delicious emotional tension that comes when two people clearly belong together but are too afraid to risk their friendship. Let's not forget that undeniable chemistry!
There’s humor, awkwardness, longing, and so much sweetness. It’s about trust. It’s about timing. And most of all, it’s about finding that courage to tell your best friend: “I think it’s always been you.”
As this is my first book by her, I found that Bella Rivers has such a gentle, warm writing style, and this story feels like a love letter on how the magic of friendship can turn into something so much more.
What I also love is that the heat never overshadows the heart. These two know each other inside and out—there’s history, trust, and a deep emotional intimacy that makes every spicy scene feel earned and hotter because of it.
So yes, they kiss. And yes, it's very, very good.
If best friends who become lovers in the most deliciously messy, emotionally charged, and scorching way is your jam, this book is for you.
It's cozy, genuine, and a little like coming home, Friends Don’t Kiss is a must-read. This is part of the Emerald Creek series but can be read as a stand- alone. (That's what I did, in typical me fashion)
Thank you to #bellarivers for the ARC of this lovely book!
This is the fourth book in this series, and this is Colton and Kiara’s story. When Kiara’s life is upended twice in on day, she needs a fresh start, and relocates to Emerald Creek, where she crosses paths with Colton. Colton is relentless in his pursuit and is determined to convince her to give them a chance. This is a well written easy to read story, with found family, friendships, emotions, angst, drama, heartbreak, challenges, friends / lovers, fake dating, humor, witty banter, tension, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, small-town romance, which tugs at the heartstrings throughout. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This was my first book by Bella Rivers I've read and I must say...I will be back for more! Friend's Don't Kiss can be read as a standalone in the Emerald Creek Series. It's a gorgeous small town with the friendliest people ever. Once you move to Emerald Creek, you are not just a friend, but rather part of a huge family.
Kiara has been on her own a long time and after Colton recruited her into Emerald Creek with a job, she had to learn small town life. Colton met Kiara when she was at all time low living in her car. His friend/Emerald Creek family owned a bakery so he was able to get Kiara a job doing her passion, baking and creating little masterpieces. Kiara's dream is owning a bakery that does intricate cakes and create a combination of sweet and savory specialty desserts. Getting started is the hard part.
Colton has secretly admired Kiara from afar for a long time. They are best friends but Colton wants more. He gets a chance to play fake boyfriend by accident in front of Kiara's awful family and now they are stuck holding up the charade. Colton is the local mechanic and he does pretty well for himself and lately he has really been coming into his own with growing up and desiring more from life.
When the charade takes a turn for the spicy things get really complicated. Kiara doesn't want to lose who she is or risk losing one of her best friends. Colton won't accept her excuse so he has to get creative in proving to Kiara they are meant to be. Especially since she is leaving for France for an intensive 3 month baking internship at a prestigious school. Colton has to make sure she comes back to him and he has to prove his love without scaring Kiara off.
This is one of those books that makes.you audibly squeal out loud while reading. The brigade Kiara is queen of had me cracking up and Colton had my heart melting. If you like romance, you absolutely do not want to miss this one!
I can't wait to see what Willow gets herself into in the next book in the series!
This was just such a good story. Colton and Kiara had been friends for a few years. Ever since he found her sleeping in her car and helped her out. Since then, their friendship had strengthened. They lived in the same building and spent a lot of time together, and they probably knew each other better than anyone else. So when Kiara needed a ride to her grandmother's birthday party, Colton drove her. And when he heard how her mother and sister spoke to her, he stayed. Soon, he was playing the part of devoted boyfriend, and enjoying it a little too much. Especially when he kissed her. For show, of course. Yeah. Tell that to his heart. Kiara didn't know why Colton would want to subject himself to her family like that, and she really didn't want to think about that kiss. Colton was her friend. Nothing more. She couldn't get distracted from her goal of being a pastry chef and having her own shop. And maybe even training at an elite institute in Paris. Developing feelings for Colton could throw a wrench in her life plans. But Kiara can't deny that Colton makes her feel special, and they have a deep bond that is unlike anything else. She's closer to him than most of her own family, and she doesn't know what she would do without him. OMG There was so much feeling here! Colton was just so sweet and supportive of Kiara, even when it could hurt him in the long run. He really wanted her to achieve all her dreams, even if it would take her away from him. There was quite a bit of family drama that really weighed heavily on Kiara. Also small town politics and nosiness. But there were also some good friends that helped them see past all the drama, and some much needed closure for Kiara. This kept me up reading way later than I should have. And it just goes to show that sometimes what you're not looking for is right in front of you the whole time.

When she was fleeing her controlling family and trying to get a fresh start, he is the one who found her sleeping in her car. He helped her get a job and get back on her feet. Since then they have been best friends. They live in the same complex and hang out together. When her grandmother's birthday comes up and her family is pressuring her, she tells them she has a boyfriend to get them on her back, and when he finds out he steps in and goes with her. He has been drawn to her, he has dated some but he can't get the enthusiasm up to imagine anything long term with anyone. However once they share a kiss at her family reunion, he knows what he wants, he just has to convince her. She is gun shy and terrified to loose what they have. These are two really well written and defined characters. You have a strong sense of who they are and immediately attach to them. Their story starts out sweet as their relationship starts to evolve. Once things take a turn for them, you get to see their fun and spicy sides and things heat up. They have some very steamy spice with some panty melting dirty talk that lights both of them up. You quickly become invested in their story and getting them to their happily ever after. The sweetness of this man does not disappoint as he works to make a life for them. All of that is fantastic. This is a 300 page story that is told in 430+, which gets very distracting. There are a lot of tangents that this story wanders into, giving you lots of description that just don't add anything to the story. I would have really liked less distraction and more meat into some of the more key sections of the story.

The fourth book in the Emerald Creek series is every bit as good as its predecessors. Well-paced, with a great sense of place and two very relatable characters, this steamy friends-to-lovers story sizzles all the way through to the extremely satisfying end.
Colton Harper might just be the perfect romantic hero: a man who really sees and understands a woman and encourages her to be her best self. Oh yeah, and he’s loyal, reliable, incredibly hot and great between the sheets too. This quote really captures him:
“You know, I just… just feel good in my garage. With my guys. I like to take things that aren’t working the way they’re supposed to, and fix ’em. My boss, Merritt (…) used to say things like, ‘let’s go fix what we can in this world.’ “And he’d show me how to change a belt or weld something. And then when I was done he’d say, ‘You fixed something that didn’t work before, and that’s more than most people can say today.’”
Honestly, with the way the Emerald Creek series is shaping up, Bella Rivers might just trigger a stampede of women moving to Vermont in search of the small-town vibe and a hunky man of their own.
Friends Don’t Kiss is a great option for anyone looking for a feel-good escape. Highly recommended.

Friends Don't Kiss by Bella Rivers is a heartfelt and steamy small-town romance that delves into the complexities of friendship, love, and personal growth. Set in the charming town of Emerald Creek, the story follows Colton and Kiara, two best friends whose lives take an unexpected turn after a spontaneous kiss. This moment forces them to confront their feelings and navigate the delicate balance between preserving their friendship and exploring something deeper.
Kiara, a talented pastry chef, is shaped by her past struggles and fears of vulnerability, embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Colton, her steadfast and caring friend, grows as he works to show Kiara that love doesn’t mean losing herself. Their evolving relationship is marked by humor, tension, and undeniable chemistry, creating an emotionally rich narrative.
While the book shines with well-developed characters and themes of healing, found family, and second chances, its length can feel a bit stretched at times. Some readers may find that certain parts of the story could have been trimmed to maintain a more dynamic pace.
Nonetheless, Bella Rivers' engaging writing style and the charming small-town setting make Friends Don't Kiss a satisfying read that romance fans will savor, leaving them rooting for Colton and Kiara's happily-ever-after.
I had such a good time with this book, I was so hooked from the first page that I didn’t stop until I finished and realised it was 2am, that’s tell you a lot. The way the author wrote Colton and Kiara made them feel like people I could meet in real life. Colton had this quiet strength, a mix of stubborn and sweet, and Kiara brought this mix of determination and vulnerability that I really liked. The small town vibe of Emerald Creek felt like a warm hug, and that sense of found family you can only get in a place like this. There was fake dating that got a little too real, the best banter that made me smile, and yes that one kiss that changed everything between them. Some parts made me laugh out loud, others gave me that emotional feeling in my chest, and the chemistry was always there in every glance and every little touch. Honestly, it’s one of those books that leaves you wishing you could stay in that world just a little longer. Definitely 5 stars from me. And now I can’t wait to go back and read all the rest of the books. Thank you so much to the author for gifting me a copy of her book and giving me the opportunity to read it, I received this for free and I'm leaving an honest review.
And then he kissed her. - What red-blooded 20-something male doesn't want to meet a dating prospect? The guy who's already half in love with one of his best friends, that's who. Being friend-zoned doesn't stop Colton from listing Kiara as "Sweetness" in his phone. That endearingly intimate pet name should have been his first clue of his true feelings. His ditching What's-her-name (first date) to rescue Kiara from her family's scorn should have been his second clue. But like in Charmed, the power of three set him free from blindness. The kiss to silence her awful mom and sister is his wakeup call, setting in motion a chain of events that is very sweet while shrouded in a bit of subterfuge.
Another great addition in the Emerald Creek world, the MCs and their supporting cast as wonderful as they were in book one. Heartfelt and steamy, a delightful friends-to-lovers romance where the hero claims his damsel with an unrivaled passion. I can't wait for my next visit to EC, with new lovers waiting to be paired.

Friends Don't Kiss by Bella Rivers is a friends to lovers romance by the author in a small town setting. Our FMC is named Kiara who aspires to be a pastry chef and own her own shop. Colton is our MC, who is Kiara's friend and lives next to her. Colton is headed to a date one night, which he doesn't want to go to when Kiara needs help getting to her grandma's party. Colton steps in and saves the day pretending to be Kiara's fake boyfriend. Only he wants it to be real, after that kiss. And Kiara doesn't...well not really she just wants to protect herself and their relationship if something happens. I really liked this story it reminds me of my own relationship with my husband and how we started out as friends and then moved into a loving relationship. The spice is there in this book too at a 3/5 on my own personal spicy romance book scale. But overall this is also a sweet romance story about a woman trying to find herself and her way in life with not realizing she needs someone and some help sometimes. The book is long at 400 plus pages with lots of details, which is good just maybe a bit much for a romance:)
Friends Don’t Kiss is the 4th book in the Emerald Creek series which can be read as a standalone novel.
That being said, there were many characters from previous books constantly in the story and it did get confusing trying to figure out who they all were.
Kiara and Colton had a great story but I feel like their romance was overshadowed by so many different events occurring throughout the book.
Colton is a great boyfriend and I loved how encouraging and supportive he was when it came to Kiara and her dreams, needs and wants. Pity about the dating app fiasco, it just seemed unnecessary and weird.
The conflict between Kiara and her family was glazed over and to discover who her father truly was made me cringe. It was very unexpected and I laughed when I found out.
The story had potential. I am a sucker for a small town romance but there just seemed to be so much happening and so many characters involved at any given time. I zoned out a couple of times and happily skipped parts which didn’t interest me.

Thank you so much Bella Rivers for the copy of the e-arc.
Bella’s books are like a warm hug, are filled with amazing characters, take place in beautiful settings and have the most beautiful love stories. I’ve read all of her books and this is my new favorite.
There’s something about Colton and Kiara that made me binge read this story in a day. They are amazing friends who’ve never crossed the line…until they did.
Colton is such a good man, with a big heart, does so much for others and sincerely protective. He’s had feelings for Kiara for some time but didn’t want to ruin their friendship.
Kiara is determined to prove herself…to herself and her horrible mom/sister. She’s extremely talented, driven and is not afraid of a challenge. Until it comes to Colton. She is scared to share her true feelings because she cannot lose him…she’s lost so much and the thought of losing him makes her very sad.
I love how Bella writes this beautiful friends to lovers relationship. They will make you laugh, swoon and fan your face!
Friends Don't Kiss started off really promising. I love a friends-to-lovers romance, and I especially appreciated the easy rapport that Kiara and Colton had with each other. You could just tell there was so much ease.
The chaotic way that Colton and Kiara got together was pretty funny. I appreciated the hidden identity piece and hoped that humor would continue.
What I didn't love as much about this book (and I will say that these things are probably specific to me as a reader and might not bother others) was: 1) On one hand the worshipping/appreciation of the main character's thinness, and on the other, the truly odd descriptions readers were given of Kiara that seemed totally at odds with the cover photo. She's described as having "short, spikey" hair, and I just couldn't square that with the cover photo. 2) The patronizing ways Colton treated Kiara after they got together. I just wasn't for me.
This exceptional book made me laugh, smile and sigh, as well as get a little teary-eyed. Kiara and and Colton are meant to be together, but she is afraid to risk their friendship by taking things further. He was the one who lifted her up when she was at her lowest point, who helped her find a job, encouraged her to pursue her dreams and offered her support when few others did. She counts on him more than anyone else, and the thought of losing him terrifies her. In her experience, romantic love doesn’t last, usually due to her own failings, and she doesn’t think her heart could survive if she lost Colten. He is determined to show her that the connection between them is strong enough to endure any bumps and rough spots, that he has loved her along and will keep doing so for a lifetime. They have a great group of friends that offer advice, encouragement and support, sometimes hilariously and always with a dose of love.
Bella Rivers has done it again. Her Emerald Creek Series continues with Friends Don't Kiss.
Kiara and Colton - the perfect "yes, they do; no, they don't" couple.
Kiara wants Colton for a boyfriend, but she'd rather have him as a friend. She's convinced she can't have both. Struggling to overcome obstacles from her past, she can't find the confidence to do the things that will move her toward her dreams.
Colton wants Kiara as a girlfriend. If he can't make that happen, he'll settle for being friends. But first he's going to give it his all in his efforts to win her over, and make her his.
The hilarity that ensues makes this story one that will keep you wondering how they manage to dance around their feelings for each other. Add in the meddling, but well-meaning friends and family, and this book will keep you turning pages.
Will love win out in the end? Read Friends Don't Kiss and find out!
Friends Don't Kiss is the 4th book in the wonderul Emerald Creek series. While it could be read as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading the books in order as both Colton and Kiara as well as the whole small-town-in-your-business folk are introduced in previous books, making the experience of this highgly emotional and romantic best-friends-to-lovers tale all the richer. As someone who loves to eat, the descriptions of the delicacies produced by Kiara were literally mouthwatering! Both main characters are absolutely adorable together and I think Colton is my favourite hero so far. From angst to zest for life, this book runs the gamut of emotions, with the cutest HEA that brought tears to my eyes. I can't wait to return to Emerald Creek. I was lucky to have received an early copy and am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.
Colton would do anything for his best friend and that includes coming to her rescue in an unlikely way. One kiss would be all that it would take for him to realize that now is the time to finally claim the woman he has always wanted not only as his friend but the woman who stole his heart.
Kiara has found the place and people where she belongs, and she doesn’t want to do anything that could jeopardize it. Her friendship with Colton is one of the most important relationships she has however her need to be cautious is no match for his determination that they are meant to be.
The interactions between Kiara and Colton were fun and flirty and the romance between them is enchanting. The townspeople of Emerald Creek only enhance the story and are always there for support when needed.
I really enjoyed the cozy small-town vibes—complete with all the quirky neighbors and just the right amount of meddling (okay, maybe a little too much at times, but that’s part of the charm, right?). The premise had so much potential and made for a fun setup.
That said, I found myself wanting a bit more background on the “friends” part of the friends-to-lovers journey—it would’ve made the transition feel even more satisfying. And while the nicknames weren’t totally my style, I know plenty of readers will find them endearing.
Overall, it’s a light and easy read with some sweet moments, lots of steamy ones and a charming setting. If you’re into small-town romances with a playful vibe, this might be one to add to your list!
Also Colton might just be the next book boyfriend you’re looking for 🥰
This was my introduction to Emerald Creek and I will most definitely be back for more! I love a good small town romance and this definitely delivered. Kiara and Colton are best friends and neighbors. When Kiara has to be at her grandma's birthday party but her car won't start, Colton offers to give her a ride. He ends up pretending to be her boyfriend to keep her mom and sister off her back. When they kiss they both feel a spark. Colton ends up telling Kiara that he wants to actually try dating but Kiara is terrified of losing her friendship with Colton. She is scared of relationships due to past trauma with her family. Colton is so sweet and patient with her. He knows they belong together and doesn't give up! This was a great, easy read and had my favorite trope....friends to lovers! I love Emerald Creek and can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Life is never linear and Kiara’s plans for her life gets disrupted when she encounters two traumatic events in one day. Fortunately, that leads her to the small town of Emerald Creek where she settles down as a pastry chef and finds her found family, including Colton.
I loved the strong friendship between Colton and Kiara, and though it was at first a barrier to them becoming more, eventually their friendship helped to cement their relationship with one another. I enjoyed seeing Colton’s efforts to win her over, while respecting her barriers.
The B*tch Brigade was amazing, and it truly makes me wish I had a similar girl gang rooting for me too. The ending was perfect for our sweet female lead and her cinnamon roll hero.
Kiara and Colton are friends, and they wonder if it could be more, but neither of them wants to rock that boat. When Kiara attends her grandma's birthday party, it's Colton who jumps in to help. Kiara's family—her sister and mom—are a bunch of assholes, and I understand why she’s hesitant in this story. She dreams of the good life—being a pastry chef and opening her own place—and I ask, is that too much to ask? When things shift between them, what will happen? Colton is adorable in how he just wants to make Kiara's life better. They have this slow-burn friendship-turned-lovers story, but sometimes it's not all cakes and rainbows, and they will have to work their way through the emotional uphill.
This was an absolute beautiful read, from beginning to end you will fall in love with Colton because of his need to take care of Kiara and always be there for her. Kiara had an interesting upbringing that when she found out it torn her family part. On her 18th birthday she decided that life wasn’t for her and she went off to find something better for herself. She just didn’t realize she would find a forever kinda of love when Colton knocked on her window that one fair night. Watching the both of them grow together as a couple was my favorite part, they both had struggles to get through before they could start their forever journey as a couple together. Can’t wait to go back and read the rest of these books!
Another hit: This was another wonderful addition to what has already been a fabulous series. Whilst it could be read as a standalone, I think it would be preferable to read the prior books so as to fully appreciate both the friend and small town dynamics. It was a little on the long side, however I felt like I really got to know the characters and enjoyed seeing their personal growth. Kiara and Colton made a wonderful couple and their struggles felt real and tangible. I also really enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie that this group of friends had. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The tropes in this book are so good. 💞 Friends to Lovers 💞 Fake Dating 💞Small Town Romance 💞 Found Family 💞 Mechanic x Pastry Chef 💘 He Falls First (and Harder) 💞 Meddling Best Friend 💞 No Third-Act Breakup
I love a blue collar hero and Colt is such a doting teddy bear. He really takes fake dating his best friend Kiara very seriously! With real kisses and touches of affection in front of her family and even her ex, things start to feel more real than ever. Kiara has a fear of relationships because of the past but I love how Colt is determined to make her see only him, that he is her future and that he's not going anywhere. I really loved this story. Colt was such a great book boyfriend!
What a cute small town romance book! The MMC, Colton is such a swoon and I really enjoyed him. He’s sweet, caring, patient and is a freak in the sheets! The FMC, Kiera, wasn’t my fave at first, she definitely got on my nerves with her actions but she grew on me. I realized a lot of her choices were due to her own personal issues she dealt with and I’m happy she was able to overcome them with Colton’s help. I loved the found family trope in this book, it really was sweet to see the town of emerald creek take in not only Kiera but everyone else in the town. The friend group was amazing and I cannot wait to dive deeper into this series!
Sweet, Funny, Emotional Romance I wouldn’t mind living in Emerald Creek! What a wonderful community, with adorable characters (most of them 😉). As with the other books in this series the story is very realistic, relatable personal problems and insecurities and with love, just not from that very special person but from the whole village, giving the right conditions to let people grow. Lots of laughs, some tears and hot cheeks! Loved it. Highly recommended! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Returning to Emerald Creek did not disappoint! The chemistry between Colt and Kiara is off the charts and the way he cares for her, calls her "sweets" and looks out for her is amazing. Definitely one of my favorite heroes so far! He encourages her to follow her dreams and does everything to support her, "Told you I'd wait thirty years if I had to. Now go and show them." Add in the charming town and friends that rally around them and you won't want it to end! So lucky to have received an advanced copy and write an unbiased review!
One of the best books I read this year. You will fall in love with Colton, I know I did. Colton and Kiara are best friends since the first day they met. But Colton always wanted more than a friendship. Kiara wouldn’t let Colton be more than her bestie since she has abandonment issues stemming from her past. But Colton finds a way to break down those walls around Kiara’s heart. They both fall in love and become the best for each other. Kiara finds a real family in Colton and all her friends in Emerald Creek. Can’t wait for the next book!
A great friends to lovers small town romance this summer! Colton is guy a great guy and he really knows how to make a girl for in love to him. Plus the fact that it’s a small town romance makes it even more better. Kiarra and Colton are really meant for each other. They’re perfectly fit. It’s a good escape and it’s the kind of book where you can bring it anywhere if you want to scream and giggle. What a great book for sure! 💓
Thank you so much Caroline for this ARC 💌
read this if you’re into: - friends to lovers - small town romance - heartfelt steamy romance
"Friends Don't Kiss: A Small Town, Friends-to-Lovers Romance" (Emerald Creek Book 4) by Bella Rivers was a great read. I loved Kiara and Colton's story. This story had romance, passion, friends to lovers, small-town life, family, friends, humor, entertaining characters, and more. This was the first book I've read by this author, and it won't be the last. I've already added the rest of this series to my wish list. I can't wait to read what happens next. I highly recommend it to all fans of romance, friends to lovers, small towns, and series.
