When Dorcas Anderson saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from being crushed by a passing dray it sets up a chain a series of events she could not have imagined. The grateful lady insists on presenting to her rescuer a tinder box containing three tokens. Each can be exchanged for a favor from The Black Widow of Whitehall herself.
She needs the first sooner than she expected, when her dead husband's twin, brother to a powerful duke, has her and her four-year-old son arrested for theft.
When Mrs. Dove-Lyon asks him to help rescue a wrongfully arrested widow, Ben, the Earl of Somerford, is glad to aid Mrs. Anderson, whom he knew and respected when he was with the army in the Peninsula.
Dorcas uses the second token to enlist Mrs. Dove-Lyon in catching Ben’s attention, little knowing that Ben is already wondering if Dorcas is just the wife he needs.
Ben is too slow to declare his interest. Dorcas's brothers-in-law threaten, and Mrs. Dove-Lyon may have the Another marriage, this time to a man powerful enough to stand against a possibly malevolent duke.
The plan is set. A game of cards will decide the groom. Can Dorcas use the third token to change the odds? Anything can happen when a lady is thrown to a Lyon.
Have you ever wanted something so much you were afraid to even try? That was me ten years ago.
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a novelist. I even started dozens of stories, over the years.
But life kept getting in the way. A seriously ill child who required years of therapy; a rising mortgage that led to a full-time job; six children, my own chronic illness… the writing took a back seat.
As the years passed, the fear grew. If I didn't put my stories out there in the market, I wouldn't risk making a fool of myself. I could keep the dream alive if I never put it to the test.
Then my mother died. That great lady had waited her whole life to read a novel of mine, and now it would never happen.
So I faced my fear and changed it--told everyone I knew I was writing a novel. Now I'd make a fool of myself for certain if I didn't finish.
My first book came out to excellent reviews in December 2014, and the rest is history. Many books, lots of positive reviews, and a few awards later, I feel foolish for not starting earlier.
I write historical fiction with a large helping of romance, a splash of Regency, and a twist of suspense. I then try to figure out how to slot the story into a genre category. I'm mad keen on history, enjoy what happens to people in the crucible of a passionate relationship, and love to use a good mystery and some real danger as mechanisms to torture my characters.
Dip your toe into my world with one of my lunch-time reads collections or a novella, or dive into a novel. And let me know what you think.

A charming & delightful novella, brilliant characters & a well paced story had me reading it in a sitting. I loved both Ben & Dorcas, both had known grief. Dorcas was a strong woman who couldn’t understand why her first husband’s twin was so determined to harm her & her son but she scraped a living. Ben didn’t expect to inherit the earldom but is working hard for his dependents. I loved the chemistry between them & how their relationship grew & deepened. There were a couple of surprises & the villain did get his comeuppance I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Dorcas Anderson, a young widow who was a camp follower during the war in the Peninsula, saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon's life. In appreciation, Mrs. Dove-Lyon gives her a box with three tokens. Each one to use for Mrs.Dove-Lyon's help. Threatened by her dead husband's twin brother, Ben, the Earl of Somerford, is sent by Mrs. Dove-Lyon to help her. Having known each other during the war, Ben admires Dorcas and her struggles to survive. Mrs. Dove-Lyon again makes her plans to maneuver the two into the position she holds as a matchmaker. One of my favorite series. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
Mrs. Dove-Lyon of the most notorious gambling den in London, is busy making another match through her match making service in Thrown to the Lyon. This time it's a match for those who followed the beat of the drum in this very enjoyable short story. Jude Knight has written a romance with flawed characters who manage to grow and yet retain their personalities which captivates you from the beginning, tinder box containing three tokens, with a brother-in-law that causes some drama and with an enjoyable plot that brings this read together perfectly
A widow twice over, Dorcas is granted three tokens by Bessie Dove-Lyon for saving her life. She must use them wisely when she and her son are threatened. Ben, Lord Somerford comes to her rescue once but will he win her to wife or lose her in a card game? I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Terrific story about Dorcas Anderson, a twice-widowed mother of a young son. She eloped with her first husband and followed him to the war, where her husband was killed just before her son was born. His commanding officer, who was also her husband's twin brother, refused to give her the money to return to England, leaving her no choice but to marry another soldier for protection. After he was also killed, she made her way back to London, where she takes in embroidery to make ends meet.
One day, Dorcas saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from an accident and is rewarded with three tokens, each worth a favor from Mrs. Dove-Lyon. The timing was propitious, as she was shortly thereafter accused of theft by her former brother-in-law. Dorcas uses her first token to request help, and Mrs. Dove-Lyon sends Ben, the Earl of Somerfield, to get her out of jail and bring her to the Lyon's Den for protection. There are some lovely scenes of Dorcas and her son at the Lyon's Den. I especially enjoyed seeing Mrs. Dove-Lyon's "wolves" and the third-floor ladies become part of Dorcas's cheering section.
Ben knew Dorcas from when he was with the army. He remembers her as kind and honorable. He is happy to help and, in spending time with her, is reminded how much he admires her. I enjoyed seeing them together as Ben steps in to help her get the justice she deserves. They begin to develop feelings for each other, but Dorcas believes that she is not of sufficient class to hope for marriage. An invitation to the Lyon's Den masque opens her eyes to possibilities for the future. I loved this part. The description of the gown Dorcas designed and its effect on the men who attended the ball was very emotional.
Dorcas and Mrs. Dove-Lyon agree that her best plan to protect herself and her son is to marry again to a man of sufficient rank to stand up to her former in-laws. This is where Mrs. Dove-Lyon excels. Ben recognizes the depth of his feelings for Dorcas, but it is almost too late. I enjoyed seeing Mrs. Dove-Lyon make Ben work to earn the hand of the lady he loves. The ending was intense, but we know love will triumph.
There is trouble for Dorcas throughout the book as her husband's twin brother continues to make trouble for her. Dorcas doesn't know why he shows such enmity toward her. Ben's determination to ensure her safety soon uncovers the truth. Ben's protectiveness goes a little too far at one point, angering Dorcas and possibly opening her up to more trouble. Fortunately, he learns from his mistakes. I liked the twist during the ceremony and the resolution of Dorcas's troubles.
An enjoyable and well written story full of romance, emotion, drama, danger and suspense. Dorcas is a strong, admirable heroine and Ben is a protective cinnamon roll hero. Both are very likable characters with great chemistry between them and are a perfect match. Dorcas‘ little son caught my heart from the start.
Dorcas Anderson eloped with her first husband Lord Ves Seward, brother to a powerful duke, and followed her husband on the peninsula where she lived as a army wife. When her husband died, leaving her without means and pregnant, she approached his twin brother and superior Lord Augustus Seward, to help her return to England but he refused to assist her. After the birth of her son she after, she married another soldier and kept following the drum until her second husband died in battle too. Now back in England with her son and no relatives to rely on, she works as a sewer. One day on her way home she coincidentally witnesses a lady being pushed on the street and saves her life. The lady in question is Mrs. Dove-Lyon who gratefully gives her three tokens to use when she needs a favor from her. Dorcas and her son are shortly after arrested for stealing an apple due to Lord Augustus‘ false accusation and Dorcas turns to the widow of Whitehall for aid. Mrs. Dove-Lyon sends Benjamin Barclay, Earl of Somerford, to her rescue in her stead who knew her from their time on the continent. Ben, an army officer, has admired Dorcas since the time she followed the troops. When Mrs Dove-Lyon asks him for help, he is only too happy to help and protect her. The two fall in love very quickly, but then Ben makes an unfortunate mistake that puts Dorcas in danger and could cost them their happiness, because the Widow of Whitehall has arranged a wager to protect Dorcas and suddenly Ben is just one of many candidates for Dorcas' hand...
Overall, a sweet romance with endearing characters that I am happy to recommend!
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
This is a delightful story brimming with romance, intrigue and wit. In this gripping tale, Dorcas Anderson’s life is turned upside down when she saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from a tragic accident. Grateful for the rescue, Mrs. Dove-Lyon gifts Dorcas a tinder box with three tokens—each capable of calling upon the services of the enigmatic Black Widow of Whitehall. What follows is an engaging journey of love, political scheming, and personal growth. The plot kicks off with an arrest that puts Dorcas and her young son at the mercy of a vengeful relative. This is where Ben, the Earl of Somerford, comes in. He is a man who shares a history with Dorcas from his military days. His willingness to help Dorcas is not only driven by their past acquaintance but also by an undeniable spark of attraction, though he's slow to act on it. Dorcas is a strong, resourceful heroine who finds herself relying on the Black Widow’s tokens. Ben, for his part, is a reluctant hero, caught between his duty and his growing feelings for Dorcas. The romance between them unfolds with a subtle but palpable tension. The second token from Mrs. Dove-Lyon propels the plot forward, orchestrating a series of events that bring Dorcas and Ben closer together. What begins as a strategic alliance soon evolves into something much deeper, even though Dorcas's own insecurities and the threats from her brothers-in-law complicate matters. With the third token, comes the element of suspense and excitement that carries the climax toward a thrilling conclusion. The stakes are high, and the outcome, though uncertain, feels deeply satisfying. With its charming characters, clever plot twists, and rich historical backdrop, this novel is another captivating addition to the series. I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing and am voluntarily leaving my review.
I enjoyed this Knight in Shining Armour book, and although a fairly short novel, it is emotional, tender, and romantic. Bessie Dove-Lyon is known as a demanding businesswoman, but when Dorcas Anderston saves her life, she can afford to be generous in return. Dorcas is already in something of a pickle with her late husband's vicious family, and when the situation threatens to get out of control, Dorcas accepts the boon the Black Widow has offered her. As trouble escalates for Dorcas and her son, the owner of the Lyon's Den knows just who to call in to assist her in sorting out the mess. Ben, the Earl of Somerford had previously met Meg when she was married to an officer and from his dealings with her, knew her to be a kind and honorable woman. Unfortunately, her in-laws continue to denigrate her, but with Mrs Dove-Lyon and Ben on her side, Dorcas begins to see light at the end of the tunnel. Ben, however, begins to have feelings for Meg and the more he does to assist her in getting justice, the stronger the attraction becomes. As generous as Bessie has been to Dorcas, she still has to get her pound of flesh and she arranges the card game that makes Ben use his wits to win Dorcas' hand. This standalone novel comes to a lovely conclusion with Dorcas receiving the justice she deserves. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This is an engrossing tale for a short story; the author makes every word count. Unfortunately, I started this novella late in the evening and couldn't put it down until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning.
Twice-widowed Dorcas Anderson saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from certain death at the hands of a passing carriage. In gratitude, Mrs. Dove-Lyon befriends penniless Dorcas by giving her a trinket box with three tokens. If she ever needs help, she only has to send a message with a token to the owner of the Lyon's Den.
Dorcas needs her help sooner than she imagined when her former brother-in-law falsely reported her for stealing an apple. When she sends the token (while being escorted to jail by the constable), Mrs. Dove-Lyon sends Lord Somerford to handle the situation. Ben Somerford remembered Dorcas because he was a soldier (along with her two husbands) before being named Earl. He knew Dorcas had been widowed twice during wartime.
Lord Somerford is looking for a wife and is immediately interested in Dorcas. When Dorcas uses her second token to get Mrs. Dove-Lyon's help to get Ben's attention, she gets her wish, with some unsettling results. Altogether, this is an engaging story worthy of a reader's time.
Lyon's Den Connected World The Talons of a Lyon (2023) Hook, Lyon, and Sinker (2024) ** Thrown to the Lyon (2024) The Lyon's Dilemma (2025)
Thrown to the Lyon by Jude Knight is a novella, short, but sweet. It tells of Dorcas Anderson who had married too early and followed her husband to war, where he was killed just days before his son was born. After his commanding officer (and her husband’s brother) refused her the money to return to England, she married a kind man, whom she did not love but took good care of her and her son until he also was killed. Now she took in embroidery to keep food and roof over their heads, until one day she was accosted on the street by the same brother-in-law and accused of theft and carted away to jail. Mrs. Dove-Lyon sends Ben, the Earl of Somerfield, to get her out of jail and bring her back to the Lyon’s Den where she invited them to stay for the meantime.
Dorcas could not figure out why Augustus was after her. She had done nothing to him. It didn’t take long for Ben to sort it out and to fall in love. It took a little doing to get them together but Mrs. Dove-Lyon always gets what she wants. It was a fun little story, a credit to Jude Knight who is an accomplished author. Good characters, good plot, and interesting ending.
I was invited to read Thrown to the Lyon by Dragonblade. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #JudeKnight #ThrownToTheLyon
The day Dorcas Anderson saved Mrs. Dove Lyon from being run over by a carriage was a very lucky day for her. As a reward she was given three tokens to be exchanged for a favor at a future time. Dorcas has been widowed and has a four year old son by her first husband. When he tries to have her put in prison for stealing she’ sends a token to Mrs Dove Lyon and she sends Benjamin Barkley, the Earl of Somerford to help her. This meeting leads to an attachment forming. Benjamin has been feeling something is missing in his life and Mrs Anderson has come into it at the opportune time. Dorcas story is sad but her has persisted in keeping herself and her son with a home and food to eat. When Mrs Dove Lyon has her some stay with her to keep her out of danger from her brother in law her life begins to change. There as a lot of twists and turns to the story and I hadn’t expected everything that happened but I did enjoy the book. It was fast paced and I never lost interest.
Fate, Masque Ball, Tinderbox Tokens: A very unusual beginning for a Lyons Den story that has the Black Widow of Whitehall herself very involved in this edition to the Lyons Den series Mrs., Lady Dove Lyon continues her deception and conniving ways to bring a marriage to this wonderful couple. A charming story between Dorcas and Ben as they discover each other and find a heartfelt love match. There are many hurdles to conquer along their way and the use of the tokens certainly helped, the care and protection of the ladies from the third floor, and the kitchen staff made this story very caring and enjoyable to read, bringing this story to a happy conclusion. 🤔Rating for me due to the passionless interactions between the couple. 3.5 rounded up to 4. Good story that could have been so much better with some emotional charismatic connections. 🙋♀️I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest thoughts and opinion.
Twice a war widow, Dorcas Anderson's life takes a turn for the unexpected when she saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from a rogue dray, sparking a series of unforeseeable events. In gratitude, she's gifted a tinder box with three magical tokens, each promising a favor from the infamous Black Widow of Whitehall. But when her late husband's identical twin accuses her and her son of theft of an apple. Mrs. Dove-Lyon summons Benjamin Barclay, the dashing Earl of Somerford, to come to their rescue. With a clever use of her tokens, Dorcas seeks to snag Ben's notice, unaware that he's already smitten and considering her as his potential bride.
This novella is a gem, filled with witty characters and a plot that zips along so merrily I was glued to it until the final "The End". The romance between Dorcas and Ben is a joy to follow as it blossoms and deepens. And yes, they get their happily ever after, complete with a few twists and a satisfying comeuppance for the baddie.
Jude Knight gets all 5 STARS for her new entry in the exciting multi-author Series: The Lyon's Den Connected World. Thrown to the Lyon is a fast paced storyline that once again deals with returning soldiers and here also a wife or actually a widow.
A woman who was widowed & had her son & then remarried immediately only to become a widow a second time. Dorcas is a sweet lady with a wonderful young son, Steven. She accidentally comes upon Mrs Dove-Lyons in the streets when someone jumped out in front of her to push the Black Widow into the front of a on coming wagon but Dorcas acted quickly & ran out, grabbed her & swung her back in causing Titan to grab her out of the way.
From that fateful meeting Dorcas ends up meeting up with Ben, once again! This fast paced heartfelt story is exillirating. It touches the heart.
Twice widowed, and left virtually penniless and with a small son Dorcas is just about making ends meet by taking in sewing. But her luck turns on two days after two near disasters with vehicles. First she prevents Mrs Dove-Lyon from being hit by a carriage and is given three tokens/wishes by said lady of she ever needs helps, and second after helping a header pick up apples that have fallen from his wagon, she is charged with theft by her former brother in law. When she ask Mrs Dove-Lyon for help using her first token, Ben an Earl is sent to help her and they recognise each other from their time in the Peninsular wars.
We met Ben in the authors maraThons Den book where his sister found her match, so good to see how she's doing and swing Ben get his atory, although the tale is familiar.
Ben and Dorcas' story is an enjoyable one. The hero and heroine are very likable and the storyline is quite original.
Dorcas has been widowed twice. Her first husband (and father of her son) was a member of the aristocracy; her second husband was a soldier. While there is no remaining family on her side, her husband's nasty twin brother is alive and well and is hell-bent on causing trouble for Dorcas.
Fortunately, Dorcas meets the infamous Widow of Whitehall. The Widow enlists the help of Ben Somerford, now an Earl, to help the young mother and son. He sets about dealing with the mean twin brother. Things fall into place - with just a touch of angst - and our Hero and heroine get the HEA they deserve.
This sweet story of Ben and Dorcas was about two people who admired one another from a distance in the past, and fate found a way for them to reunite when least expected. The characters were well developed and had depth. The story showed people from all parts of society and how they could be accepted by the higher classes. There were real issues addressed along with the love story. The main characters were great together, and you could see what their family would look like. This novella dealt with soldiers returned from war, second chance romances, friends to lovers, reconnecting with family, and the struggle of widows that aren’t provided for by their soldier husband.
Thank you NetGalley for a fun read. The widow of two husbands who died in the war Dorcas Anderson had to marry her second husband to protect her son and herself. Now as she is rushing home in London she saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from being hit by a dray. She gives her three coins to help if she needs it. The first she needs when her first husband's twin accuses her of stealing. The Earl of Somerfield comes to her rescue for Mrs. Dove-Lyon. He knew her in the war and knows her story so she is in his care until she can prove her innocence. Her husband's older brother has been given bad information from his brother. with the help of a series of people she is helped.
I loved this story with Ben and Dorcas and how it related to the women who followed the drum during war time. It’s a great story in that Dorcas finally gets her HEA but it was not an easy path to it. I also loved that Mrs. Dove-Lyon gave tokens to Dorcas after saving her life and how Dorcas used each token. Stephen was a welcome addition to the story. It’s a wonderful story that is well written and worth reading. I wish someone would give Titan his story with a special someone because he has appeared in almost all stories and I have come to really like him. I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and are voluntarily leaving a review.
Dorcas Anderson is the widow of a soldier, twice, and a single mother. She struggled to provide for her and her son. Things changed when she saved Bessie Dove-Lyon from being run down by a dray. Mr. Dove Lyon presented her with a box that contained three tokens. For each token she would grant Dorcas a boon. Sort of like three wishes from a genie. When her late husband’s brother has her and her son arrested (falsely) for stealing an apple, Mrs. Dove Lyon calls on Ben Barclay, Earl of Somerfield to help with situation. He met Dorcas when she the wife of an officer. He agrees to help because he believes her to be an honorable woman. As he and Mrs. Dove Lyon help Dorcas and her son, Ben and Dorcas begin to have feelings for each other. Mrs. Dove Lyon sees this and makes sure he is in the game for Dorcas’s hand. She will make him work for the woman he loves. Well, sort of. There is a happy ending, enhanced by the news that a surprise guest at the wedding brings. I received a special copy of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Dorcas Anderson is doing all she can to survive. When things look the most desperate she saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from a runaway carriage and it return Mrs. Dove Lyon rescues her. The dynamics in this book are a little more complicated than what I can put in this review. However, I really enjoyed the plot and the Prince Charming who came to the rescue. When all is said and done not everyone is who they seem and some have relied upon information the was not correct and severely biased. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with guidelines.
When Dorcas saves Mrs. Dove-Lyon from certain death, little does she know that she saves herself, too. Mrs. Dove-Lyon presents her with a tinderbox containing three tokens.
Dorcas has a dangerous enemy that does everything in his power to humiliate and discredit her. Will her tokens help her fight off the monster?
The first token Dorcas presents to Mrs. Dove-Lyon gets her a champion. Ben will do all he can to protect her. What happens when the two fall in love? There will be challenges to overcome and a villain to squash. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to those who like historical romance.
What a delicious story of a woman, Dorcus, a simple mother widow and Ben, the Earl who saves her. The plot is well written, with a mean villain, an absent Duke and Mrs. Lyon, our famous matchmaker. It never occured to me some of the issues a woman faces when dealing with Ton children. That part was actually scary and I could understand her reaction. The third token scenario was priceless (no pun intended) and a nice surprise. Very sweet, very interesting, very worth the read! Great characters too!
I received this story for free and these are my own views.
I absolutely love the Dove-Lyon stories and this one isn't an exception. The plot on this story is much different and I couldn't put it down. Dorca is a widow who needs help. Mrs. Dove-Lyon owed her so Dorca reaches out. The story reminds me of Aladdin with Mrs. Dove-Lyon being the genie granting Dorca three favors or wishes. Filled with a Knight in shining, a villain and so much more. The characters have depth, strength, charisma and are just fabulous. The villain is taken care of perfectly, yahooooo! The romance is sigh worthy. So don't miss out on this one.
Dorcas Anderson is a widow struggling to make ends meet while caring for her 4 year old son. She makes a meager living sewing, which is barely enough to live on. Dorcas pulls Mrs. Dove-Lyon out of the way of having a carriage accident. In return Mrs. Dove-Lyon gives Dorcas three tokens in a box that Dorcas can turn in for help or favors as needed. I love the entire Lyon's Den Series, and the plot of this story is a little different. I really enjoyed this story. There are wonderful characters, drama, betrayal, lies, a contest to win a bride, as well as those tokens.
Thrown to the Lyon: The Lyon's Den Den Connected World Jude Knight
This is a great story of a woman that followed her husband to war, a vicars daughter. After her husband was killed, she delivered her child with no means to return to England. She was married to another soldier so she could feed her son and herself. It took all of her strength and determination to care for her son and earn wages to keep them housed and fed. The characters are very well defined, the story flows with such caring and thoughtfulness. I loved this touching story. A must read.
Having jumped right from the previous book in this series straight into this story I was already steeped in the setting and ready for entertainment. And I was definitely delighted. I liked Ben when introduced in the last story and I liked him even more in this one. Dorca was a new addition but she stepped up and delivered a grand performance as the heroine. I was hooked and could hardly put it down. The pace was good. I would have liked to see the villain get more than a busted nose for his punishment but at least he was punished. Lovely ending. Nice wrap-up.
I love this series of stories written by various authors, most of them very good writers. Ms. Knight is among the best. I liked Dorcas and Ben from their introductions in the story, so much so that I read the story in one sitting. The other reviewers give more detailed information of the story and the plot so I'm not going to repeat what they have so well described. What I will do is look for this author's other writings and read more of her stories. Don't skip this one if you enjoy this series, it's a must read in this Connected World!
Thank you, Netgalley & Dragonblade Publishing, for the ARC. I was too impatient to wait a couple more days for it to come out. LOL! I love this series. I really liked this book as well. I immediately liked the down on her luck, but strong main female character. The main male character was very likable as well. Trying not to give too much away, I also appreciated the story about women during wartime. One negative is that the story was a little short, like a lot of others in this series.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. So many books from such amazing authors, and this one is pure delight. The amazing Mrs. Dove-Lyon, always gets her match. Hard working, twice widowed, Dorcas deserved a good match. Like the Dorcas of the Bible, this Dorcas sewed for a living , trying to make a life for her and her young son. Ben, Lord Somerford , saw the goodness in her, and not only looked after her, but fell in love with her. A charming story!
