“I’d rather die before ever making you mine—but that doesn’t mean anyone else can have you.”
A man with many secrets, a woman desperately fighting for independence, a mission that leads them and their company towards unknown mysteries they are desperate to unravel because the world could soon depend on it—literally.
What would you do if everything you knew was a lie? When you found out there was so much more to your world than you were taught?
I never expected that my parents’ failed attempt to arrange my marriage would lead me to leave the small town I’ve known my entire life.
What started as a journey to escape the law soon shattered my worldview and dismantled everything I believed to know. Suddenly, being hunted is only the smallest of my problems.
Not only am I on a chase for truth and unraveling mysteries, but I also need to navigate the minefield that is Dion. The soldier who rescued me has a nasty temper, and—for someone who loves to be in charge—he has extremely little impulse control. But if he thinks I would simply submit to his antics, he is wrong. Just because he and his men helped me in a difficult situation and possess more knowledge about hidden truths from the past, it doesn’t mean I simply submit and be the docile woman society expects me to be. I have no wish to bind myself to anyone, not to my father, not to some rich betrothed, or to an arrogant bastard, no matter how attractive he is.
“The Freedom You Seek” is the first installment in the “A Requiem for Fading Worlds” dark romantic fantasy series. The story centers on Nayana, an ordinary small-town woman with a rebellious streak who gets involved in a mission bigger than herself; and Dion, a flawed soldier with a bad temper and a massive ego who tries to leave his past behind. Together with Dion’s comrades, the two embark on a journey into the heart of history and soon find out that sometimes, someone has to step up to try to save everything.
The novel tells a story about unraveling mysteries, self-discovery, uncovering the truth, and maybe even saving the world, which actually might be easier than dealing with love.
Perfect for fans of character-driven dark romantic fantasy with a plot that starts small, but escalates over the course of the series. Full of slow burn, angst and romantic tension, mutual pining, found family, mysteries, magic, overcoming trauma, as well as finding your place in a world that seems already doomed. Lastly, this story is for you if you love a walking red flag— a morally gray and possessive male main character whose secrets are as dark as the magic he wields.
This book is 18+ and contains difficult topics. Please mind the trigger warnings.
This novel is written in first person past tense with dual points of view.
The story contains spice and shadows. The pepper rating will increase throughout the series.
My ARC Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Romantasy | Fae | Found Family | Enemies to Lovers Themes: Freedom, Power, Trauma, Fate
Romantasy authors, take notes ✍️ This is how you do it. One horse. Shadow Daddy. Magic.
Emily Villin absolutely delivers in The Freedom You Seek. This romantasy debut checks every box for fans of immersive worldbuilding, broody but lovable male leads, and female protagonists with actual character growth.
✨ The Story ✨ Set in a world where women are seen as property and freedom is earned—often through blood—Naya’s journey is equal parts empowering and heartbreaking. Facing forced marriage by despicable parents, Naya escapes one horror only to find herself swept up by a mysterious group of men who rescue her from the gallows. From there, her path becomes tightly interwoven with theirs as they travel together across a land filled with visions, danger, and growing trust.
Yes, the plot is heavy on travel (about 70% of the book), but it works. Think D&D campaign meets high-stakes romantasy—with magic, danger, and unexpected tenderness guiding the journey. And the character dynamics? Perfection.
“She couldn’t see it herself yet, and I’d destroy anyone who dared douse her flames.”
💘 The Romance 💘 Enter Dion. Our main MMC. Broody, intense, and maddeningly irresistible. He’s the classic morally gray protector—rude, mysterious, sometimes funny, always terrifying—but deeply loyal and protective of Naya. He’s got that delicious “touch her and die” energy, and Villin nails the balance between alpha energy and authentic emotional growth.
“You're like a feral beast hidden in human skin.”
“He didn’t need a weapon—without his clothes he was one himself.”
Meanwhile, Naya isn’t just a damsel along for the ride. She learns, evolves, and pushes back—especially against Dion. Their banter and irritation with each other feel natural, not tropey. Watching them slowly lower their walls was deeply satisfying and not rushed in the way many romantasy pairings are.
⚔ The Vibes 🗡 Found family. Shadowy magic. Traumatized characters finding purpose. A “one horse” trope that works better than it has any right to. There are scenes of raw intensity, emotional vulnerability, and snarky banter that had me laughing and swooning in equal measure. And yes, it ends on a cliffhanger—but in the best way.
“I’d been conquered, and he was helping himself to the spoils of war—not that I minded at all.” Chef’s kiss.
➕ Bonus Points ➕ The character art inside the book was such a fun touch—I’m obsessed with Dion’s caricature and Emily Villin was kind enough to send me a few stickers of it with character art because I loved it so much! It's rare for a romantasy to blend humor, tension, and emotional depth this well, but The Freedom You Seek pulls it off, and Emily Villin is such a kind, funny, and wholesome author who really interacts with her readers. Her street team hangout is amazing, and I love getting the inside scoop of the chaos.
Final Thoughts: Emily Villin has written a standout romantasy debut that combines rich storytelling with a cast of characters you’ll obsess over. If you love moody protectors, strong-willed heroines, and slow-burn magic-laced romance—read this book. I’m already counting the days until the sequel drops, and I’m lucky enough to be a beta reader street team member 🙌

"Trying to save the world doesn't make me a hero. It makes me a villain who has vested interest in keeping his playground." What truly makes a villain? And could a villain be also a saviour? Well, The Freedom You Seek, Book 1 in Emily Villin's A Requiem for Fading Worlds series, digs deep into these questions, trying to discern it all. And me? I was invested from the prologue's first sentence until the epilogue's last sentence.
"I’d rather die before ever making you mine—but that doesn’t mean anyone else can have you." Possessive, broody, yet protective and fiercely loyal. Villain or saviour? I'd say both. And that is Dion, the MMC—a walking controversy, an enigma waiting to be solved, a tortured soul with his walls high up. When his path crosses (un)intentionally with Naya, a small-town girl wrapped up in failed expectations, abusive childhood and adult life, forced into an arranged marriage, what will happen? Fate will play its strings, roads will unravel, and choices will have to be made.
When Naya gets involved with Dion and its comrades in a mission bigger than herself, mysteries will keep coming, secrets will mount, and feelings will surge. In a world where women are considered less than others, Naya will do her best to forge her own path, learn her truths, and try to accept her worth. With so much at stake, chaos will break loose.
Emily has written a story that will keep living in my heart and soul, a story so full of life, pain, hurt, devotion, and rage. A story of two souls brought together without realizing the true depth of their connection. A story that is so much more than a simple love story—a tale of breaking your chains, finding that family is so much more than blood: it is the people we choose; a tale of secrets, promises, and hidden truths; a tale of worlds colliding and destruction looming; a tale of coming together when everything is falling apart.
And that cliffhanger? Oh, Emily, what are you doing to my poor heart? I will count the days until I have Book 2 in my arms. Thank you, Emily, for having me as your ARC reader; it is a true honour I don't take lightly.
Oh my goodness! This book was absolutely incredible! The way I loved every single aspect of this book. It was perfect in every way shape and form. I loved Dion and would do unspeakable things for him.
I simply couldn't put this down! I just had to know what happened next!
I was drawn in from the very first sentence. There were plot twists, actions, and mysteries that kept me guessing. Emily sprinkled just enough clues in that, when a secret is revealed, had me stop and go, "I knew it!!!"
Nayana is not your typical female main character who immediately accepts everything at face value. She questions everything and has to find all the answers. She pushes Dion past his own self-imposed boundaries and even makes him face some truths he doesn't realize he needed to face. Dion is a well-rounded male main character with a secret that rocks everything Nayana thought she knew. He grows throughout the book. There are times when I wanted to flick him in the forehead and tell him, "Bad boy," which drew me in even more.
You ever pick up a book expecting a casual read, only to find yourself fully obsessed, sleep-deprived, and emotionally ruined by the end? Because that's exactly what The Freedom You Seek did to me. This book doesn’t just tell a story, it consumes you. The tension, the angst, the slow-burn yearning, I was gripping my Kindle like my life depended on it.
Nayana and Dion? These two OWN me. Their relationship is the epitome of "I hate you, but I can't stop thinking about you" energy. And the worldbuilding? I was lost in the pages. If you love the kind of fantasy that grips your heart and shakes your soul, this one’s for you.
This book took me on a journey. At first, Nayana's story feels like one of quiet rebellion, she’s trapped in a suffocating world, craving freedom but too bound by duty and expectation to grasp it. Then comes Dion, the brooding, morally gray warrior with a temper hotter than the sun and a past darker than night. From the moment these two collide, it’s war.
The first few chapters build an eerie tension, drawing you into Nayana’s world—small-town suffocation, hidden secrets, and that creeping feeling that nothing is as it seems. Then, the story explodes into action, secrets unravel, and suddenly, the stakes are life or death. Villain masterfully balances slow-burn character growth with high-stakes conflict, making sure you never feel bored.
Nayana starts as someone torn between duty and desire. Her internal struggle is painfully relatable, how do you choose between what’s expected of you and what you actually want? Watching her come into her own power was one of my favorite aspects of the book. She’s not a warrior, she’s not some prophecy child, she’s just a girl trying to find freedom in a world that refuses to give it to her.
Dion...Dion...Dion..... If you’re a sucker for the grumpy, tortured love interest with layers of trauma and a hidden soft spot? Meet your new obsession. Dion is dangerous, unreadable, and angry at the world, but underneath that? He cares. And when that caring side peeks through, it’s devastatingly good. His arc is one of self-destruction and redemption, and every moment is gripping.
I LIVED for their push-and-pull dynamic. Dion is infuriatingly cold and arrogant, while Nayana refuses to back down, even when it’s in her best interest. Their chemistry is so thick, you could cut it with a knife. It’s angsty, it’s raw, it’s deliciously painful. And the way their relationship unfolds? Slow, messy, so beautifully imperfect. I felt every argument, every stolen glance, every moment of restrained desire.
The found family in this book?? I wanted to wrap them all in a hug. They provide light in the darkness, offering moments of humor and warmth when things get too heavy. But don't get too attached, because this book doesn't hesitate to break your heart.
Some of the lines in this book has me in a chokehold
"I’d rather die before ever making you mine, but that doesn’t mean anyone else can have you." That possessiveness??? The desperate restraint??? I was GONE.
"What would you do if everything you knew was a lie? When you found out there was so much more to your world than you were taught?"
This sums up Nayana’s entire journey. Every revelation hits like a gut punch.
The Freedom You Seek is haunting, gripping, and utterly breathtaking. Emily Villin has crafted a story that will consume you in the best way. If you love morally gray love interests, reluctant allies, and themes of rebellion, this book belongs on your shelf.
"I'll be your shield and your sword. Your safety and your vengeance. No harm shall ever befall you again."
When a village girl gets rescued by a dark shadow wielder her world will never be the same. And a quest with a lot of mystery and secrets get started.
Just finished this first book in the series and I loved it a lot. There are still so many questions unanswered and it ends with a brutal cliffhanger. So gonna start the second book right away. Dion the dark broody, posessive and cocky shadow wielder (MMC) is fantastic. Love him! Hope the second book also gives a bit more about the side characters, because they are real cool and interesting and would like to get to know them a little bit better.
The worldbuilding is easy to understand. The story is a bit on a slower pace but I like it. And the romance (if you can call it that) is a real real slow slowburn. But this way it feels so natural and not forced. I like that a lot. There are also some really dark triggers especially in the beginning so check those before you start and have a great time!🖤
The Freedom You Seek delivers rich world-building, layered characters, and an atmosphere that pulls you in and doesn’t let go.
This is a story about power—who holds it, who takes it, and who refuses to be controlled by it. Every choice carries weight, every secret has consequences, and every moment of tension builds toward something far bigger than it first appears.
✔️ A protagonist determined to forge her own path ✔️ A world with more beneath the surface than it seems ✔️ A slow-burn romance built on sharp edges and undeniable chemistry ✔️ Magic, betrayals, and shifting alliances
There’s a depth to this story that sets it apart, with themes of survival, resilience, and the cost of uncovering the truth. And when you reach the final page? You’ll be thinking about what comes next.
(Thank you to the author for the ARC! All thoughts are my own.)
MOST unapologetically and hilarious "touch her and die" character ever!
I LOVED the story. It didn't seem as long as it was. Even though the story moved pretty slow, I was engaged the entire time and it didn't feel like there was a lot of redundancy to fill the pages. I have not read book 2, but I cannot imagine going into it without reading this first.
I LOVE the banter between Dion and Nayana. I think Dion may be the MOST unapologetically and hilarious "touch her and die" character I've ever read! I really appreciate that Nayana is written as a strong AF FMC, yet it's not done in an annoying manner. She is hilarious.
I think the author writes the suspense well. I could imagine so many end results, yet didn't see most of what did come. And I don't feel as if I was intentionally misled.
The Freedom You Seek took me on a JOURNEY! From giggling, to gasping, and then occasionally yelling “SIR.” Lol! There’s worldbuilding, there’s mystery, there’s trauma, there’s a broody shadow daddy who has no business being that unhinged and protective that early on. And I ate it right on up.
Nayana? My sarcastic, anxious, traumatized queen. A bit aggravating at times, just from naivety, but I still love her!
Dion? An absolutely feral, broody menace pretending he doesn’t care while acting like “touch her and die” is a personality trait.
Their dynamic gave: “Don’t talk to me” → “But come here” → "Stop annoying me" → “I will burn kingdoms for you.”
The tension was ridiculous. The banter?? Chaotic. The emotional moments?? Oh I was DOWN BAD.
And the last 50 pages, yall?? I was pointing at my Kindle like a conspiracy theorist, “I knew it”, every five minutes.
Emily Villin’s pacing is so good and the reveals are so satisfying.
I’m unwell in the best way and I'm SO HAPPY I can jump straight into book two as an ARC reader.
If you want a slow-burn that actually pays off, or love tension, banter, and emotional damage in equal measure.. you should read this immediately!
I read freedom because I am signed up to read the ARC for book2 the Chains that defy you. This book did not disappoint.
The world building gave us a patriarchal world where women are property (sounds like some places in the real world). Daughters are property of their Guardian (Father) and once married they are collared to show they belong to their husband. Naturally in this oppressive world, our FMC Nayana, wants freedom to choose, freedom to live.
Things happen- again not spoiling the plot since this book only came out earlier this year- and Nayana is rescued by a grumpy brooding man, who has magic. But because of a bounty on her head, and because she realizes she has 0 survival skills she stays with the brooding man and his companions.
While Nayana wants freedom, and Dion (MMC) is overbearing and still controlling her in what he says is the sense of safety, I found myself with conflict. I disliked that Nayana was being controlled and not making decisions, but also it made sense. Nayana has no survival skills, while she does help where she can in the group- her skills are domestic (Cooking/sewing). She asks for some lessons in self defense, but her progress is slow and the lessons are not the highlight of the book.
The other part of this, Nayana refuses to heal for most of this book- she has a lot of trauma in her life and despite her compartmentalization until Dion points out she needs to feel it, in order to heal it, her subconscious victim-blaming (she blames herself for being weak) mindset is holding her back. I love that he has soft, gentle moments for her.
Despite Dion's controlling nature, he does listen to her and he gives in to her wishes often. Nayana's best friend Rewi even comments that Naya is safe and has it pretty good. And again, while I want Nayana to have freedom, the world she lives in is against women. Even if she wasnt on a bounty, the world would be against her not having a husband/guardian/ etc. So in the context of the book, it really does make sense.
The magic system of this book is also unique, there are wielders, those who can use magic, and amplifiers, those who can bond with a wielder and amplify the magic of the wielder. Amplifiers are extremely rare, and Wielders are also rare.
The Freedom You Seek is an enthralling first installment in the “A Requiem for Fading Worlds” dark romantic fantasy series. This novel is a gripping mix of slow-burn romance, thrilling adventure, and intricate world-building that will leave readers desperate for more.
The story follows Nayana, a strong-willed woman determined to escape the constraints of her past, and Dion, a brooding soldier with a dark past and a dangerous temper. Their paths collide in a whirlwind of secrets, mystery, and tension, making for a compelling enemies-to-lovers dynamic. The chemistry between them is electric—so much so that I often found myself yelling at them to just kiss already! The slow-burn romance, filled with angst and mutual pining, is expertly woven into a plot that steadily escalates into something much bigger than either character could have anticipated.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its ability to keep readers on edge. While it’s clear from the beginning that Dion harbors secrets, the way they unfold had me guessing and second-guessing until the very last page. The novel’s pacing is relentless, making it nearly impossible to put down.
However, while the book delivers on action and romance, I found myself wanting more details about the world’s history and magic system. The setting appears complex and rich, but much of it remains shrouded in mystery. Hopefully, future installments will delve deeper into these aspects, as they have the potential to elevate the story even further.
The book ends on a cliffhanger that left me absolutely craving book two. If you love dark romantic fantasy filled with tension, found family, morally gray characters, and a gripping plot, “The Freedom You Seek” is a must-read. Just be prepared to be left eagerly awaiting the next installment!
The Freedom you seek is a fantasy romance set in a world that has forgotten about magic. The existence of magic and other realms has been suppressed. Humans live in a very male dominated world where women are basically property and are not afforded any independence or autonomy. All women must be attached to their father or married to be law abiding citizens in society. Nayana longs to leave her home and craves independence from her family and her impending betrothal. Nayana’s father makes it clear she will not be able to escape her marriage, and she is forced to defend herself in a brutal assault. Nayana is forced to go on the run with the five men who came to save her. She has no idea who they are or why they came for her but everything she knows about her world will be challenged and forever changed. Among these heroes is Dion, a magic wielder who has many secrets. He has a terrible temper and craves being in charge which is the last thing Naya wants to deal with. This group will soon find themselves on a journey destined to save the world as they know it.
I really enjoyed The Freedom You Seek. Naya is a strong female character and her relationship with Dion is complicated but you find yourself rooting for them to figure out a way to make their personalities mesh. There is mystery surrounding this group of men who are on an ordained mission of unknown origins but as the reader I enjoyed the slow reveal of the secrets they hold. There is a lot of world building in this first installment leading up to a very eventful conclusion. I am definitely invested in this story and ready to see how Dion and Naya fight the odds that seem to be stacking up against them. If you love Fantasy with a touch of romance I think you will very much enjoy this book. There is romance but it is a slow steamy burn and the will they/won’t they is strong! If you enjoy these tropes I think you will enjoy The Freedom You Seek.
⚔️ Grumpy/Sunshine ⚔️ Female Rage ⚔️ Touch Her and ☠️ ⚔️ Shadow wielding MMC ⚔️ The slowest of slow burns ⚔️ One horse/One bed ⚔️ Secret Identity
I would really like to thank Emily Villin for this ARC of her book.
The Freedom You Seek takes you to a world where magic has been forgotten, and women have very little freedom and are treated like property. This is a dark romantasy with the dual POVs of an overprotective, grumpy, and rude MMC - Dion, and a rebellious, fierce FMC - Nayana, who is desperate for independence.
The story is fast-paced and kept me on edge from chapter two. The world-building continues throughout as our characters travel across the map, and secrets are revealed. You can expect an interesting magic system, intriguing characters and relationships, twists, betrayals, and a cliffhanger that definitely leaves you wanting to read the next book immediately.
A few times, I was taken out of the story by some of the writing and dialogue. I did find that some of the twists were predictable if you are a fan of this genre, but I still enjoyed the reveals anyway.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I will definitely be reading the next one! Thank you to Emily Villin for the ARC.
its the first book of this author and I must say Im looking forward to the next ones.
The writing style is good and I was flying throught the pages without any problems. I love easy to read (in my opinion) books. Those books make me happy.
The book includes a map and a glossar (yes!!!!!)
The story (for me) was fluently to follow.
Do to my autism my brain gets realy fast into combinations and connections and storys reveals very fast and very early . But in this book it needed half the book and that was quite pleasant to be honest. No plottwist for me , but thats totally fine.
The spice is good written and pleasant to read. The amount of spice fits good and is not to mutch. Sometimes I was so into the story that I even forgot that spice could be in it and was positivly suprised when it came.
The only "negative" point for me is the look of the FMC . I've read enought story about perfect petite characters its a fact that annoys me a lot ...gimme some realistic normal bodys. XD and tall woman ..okay and she is blond..Im not into blonds..im Sorry... But the character itself is nice ,likeable and relateble with all positive and negative aspects of her.
The MMC is one of our beloved shadow daddys. but to be honest and fair ,and I think its a really good thing, I dont get Xaden or Rysand Vibes, which I really really love and appreciate !!!!
Im hardly to hype and I have my hard times reading hyped books..do to the fact that I read for over 25 years now books (mainly fantasy)..nothing is "new" BUT im very interested what the next book is Holding up for me or for us!!!
All in all im really happy with this book..haveing a little dying and bleeding heart because I need to wait till book 2 is coming...and maybe just maybe Im deep down a little bit hyped...silently hyped.
My favorite part about the author's writing is that we got to meet the characters through Nayana's eyes and throughout their journey vs just getting a description of them. Nayana has been through some stuff and she is a "take no sh*t" kind of girl, which I love. She's not your typical bada$$ FMC, since she doesn't know how to fight and can't wield magic, but she's brave, tough and doesn't let those things stop her from finding a way to stick up for herself.
Dion is...oh he's just Dion. He's wonderfully sarcastic. One moment he's sweet and tender, the next he's rude and overbearing. He's beautiful and protective (over protective) and I just love him.
The Freedom You Seek is an action-packed adventure that kept me hooked from start to finish. The story follows Nayana, a spirited woman breaking free from societal constraints, and Dion, a soldier with a mysterious past. Nayana and Dion’s journey is full of mystery, danger, and emotional depth, with plot twists and surprises that had me reeling in the best way. The dynamic between them is particularly compelling, filled with tension, growth, and undeniable chemistry. The action scenes are intense, the world-building is immersive, and the characters feel so real. Villin weaves a gripping story of self-discovery and resilience, making this a must-read for romantasy fans. I can’t wait for the next book!
First of all thank you to the author for giving me an ARC of this book!
While I enjoyed this book overall I did find the first half of the book very slow and overly wordy. The second half though was really good and I found it hard to put the book down! Our FMC, Naya, is sheltered (&naive) given the world she lives in and the oppression of women, because of this she’s also got some trauma to deal with. In turn, Naya finds it hard to trust and craves freedom from the expectations thrust upon women. Dion; our mmc, is our usual lovable brooding, grumpy male. But we kinda love him. I think this story is going to build into something huge in the books to come and I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.
I am ENTHRALLED in this universe. I have read a lot of books but only so many can sit up in this tiny, overworked brain of mine without paying rent but man did Emily Villin manage with this one. I cannot wait for the next book (the ending was rude 🥲). The world building, the twists, the mechanisms between Fae and human, worlds, magic, are all breathtakingly beautiful and the twists had me on the floor more than once. (Not to mention the jaw drop in chapter 40 🥵). You have found yourself a lifelong fan, I CANNOT wait to see what else is in store with this series!
I was sucked into this story from the get go, I adored the cadence & structure. It flowed impeccably and I did not want to put the book down.
I absolutely adored the FMC & her stubborn but justified personality. I can't wait to see where book 2 takes us and the journey she goes on!
This story is however, 90% travelling, I do feel this caused the pacing to feel a bit slow, I think if there had been less travel and more action or plight, the pacing would be more balanced.
Unfortunately I did have to deduct a star due to the constant repetition about the FMC being teeny tiny. It was her main descriptor & was used relentlessly. By chapter 10 I was sadly getting frustrated, it pulled me out of the story any time it was mentioned.
Ahhhhhhh! Ok the book ended in turmoil and I’m on pins and needles until the next book. Ok I get Naya’s anger but I swear that girl runs when she needs to stay, yes that sounds so you need to do what he says but seriously the girl gets the group into so much trouble when she acts up. Calling it- yes bratty with serious repercussions! But still an amazing book!
ARC Review: A great time and fun read. The middle was a little slow (I find it frustrating when the FMC and MMC have essentially the same argument on repeat) but the ending was a ton of fun so I'm so glad I stuck through to the end!
Well written. This story has slow burn, forced proximity, hidden magic, and touch her and die tropes. I was hooked from the beginning with all the twists and turns. The character development was great too. I am so looking forward to book 2, need some questions answered!!!
Wow, I really enjoyed this story! It started a bit slow but pretty quickly I had questions upon questions! I just loved the characters. Dion the MMC is morally grey, though he'd probably consider himself morally black! 😅He's got secrets and Naya's curiosity gets the better of her! What will happen between them when she finally finds out the truth? I had a brief suspicion of the plot twist at the end but honestly thought it was going in a different direction so it was definitely a surprise! 🤯 That cliffhanger at the end.....I can't wait for book 2 now!! Spice 🌶️, no intimacy but the spice will increase throughout the series. The download for "chapter zero" at the end of the book is worth reading after you finish the story (it has spoilers). It answers several questions and put things into perspective! Lastly, check out the author's OG for character art! 😍

“The Freedom You Seek” is the 1st book in the “A Requiem for Fading Worlds” a dark romantic fantasy series. This story centers around Nayana, a normal small-town girl who is rebellious and ends up getting involved in a mission that is bigger than herself.
It also focuses on Dion, a soldier with his own flaws, a bad temper, a massive ego who is just trying to leave his past in the past. Deon works with his fellow soldiers. They set out on an adventure to the heart of history and very quickly find out soon that at times, someone has to set up save everything and everyone.
This is the story about unraveling the mysteries, self-discovery, discovering the truth, and possibly saving the world, and maybe saving the world will be easier than actually dealing with love.
This series is perfect for people who love dark romance that is character driven, fantasy, a plot that starts small but grows over time, it is a slow burn full of angst, romance, tension, mutual pining, found family, mysteries, magic, overcoming trauma, and finding your own place in a big wide world that seems to be doomed.
Finally, this book will be for you if you love the walking red flag, morally grey and possessive men who have secrets as dark as the magic he holds.
Know that this is an 18+ novel, contain hard topics, and read the trigger and content warnings.
While this book is written in the first person past tense, it is written from duel points of view.
This story has spicy, passion, and shadows.
"Trying to save the world doesn't make me a hero. It makes me a villain who has vested interest in keeping his playground."
What really makes a person a villain? Can a villain also be a savior? The Freedom You Seek, Book 1 in A Requiem for Fading Worlds by Emily Villin looks into these very question, and more than that, Emily works to answer them. From the very first page until the very last word, I found myself invested.
Dion is possessive, broody, and yet he is protective and loyal. But is he a villain or savior? In my opinion, I would say he is actually both. He's a walking contradiction. Honestly, he's a contradiction that's just waiting to be solved. His soul is tortured, and his walls are up so high. It is surprising he can see where he is going.
When he unintentionally comes across Naya, a small town girl wrapped up in her own troubles with her own failed expectations, a failed childhood, abusive childhood that's moved on into her adult life, forced into an arranged marriage that failed.
So, is fate going to play their strings? Will their roads unravel under their feet? And what choices are they going to have to make?
what will happen? Fate will play its strings, roads will unravel, and choices will have to be made.
The story that Emily has woven has continued to live rent-free in my mind, my heart, and my soul. This is a story that is just full of pain, angst, pain, hurt, devotion, and even rage. We get to meet two souls who couldn't be any more different that are brought together without realizing just how true the depth of their devotion to each other and their quest is going to be.
This story is more than just a love story, though. It is about breaking the chains that bind you, bind you to your past, to your pain, to the things that hold you back. And it is about finding out that family can be so much more than just the family that you are born into and share by blood; it is the people we choose to be our family.
This story is one of secrets, promises, hidden truths, worlds colliding, and a destruction that is looming and could destroy everything you love and know and everyone you love. It's about coming together, even when everything around you is crumbling and falling apart, and everything seems helpless, and you feel like there is no point in moving forward and trying anymore.
And oh my God, that cliffhanger! Emily, you took my poor heart and just ripped it out, and I really hope you are planning on giving it back soon. I'm slowly counting the days till I can read book 2 and find out what happens next.
I just finished The Freedom You Seek and I'm emotionally compromised in the best possible way. This indie debut absolutely wrecked me—Emily Villin didn't just write a dark romantasy, she crafted an emotional experience that left me questioning why I put myself through this kind of literary devastation voluntarily.
Nayana is everything I love in a protagonist. She's trapped in a suffocating society that demands women be docile and obedient, but she refuses to break. When her father tries to force her into an arranged marriage, she fights back so fiercely that she ends up killing her would-be husband and landing on death row. That's when Dion and his band of mysterious soldiers show up to rescue her, pulling her into a mission that's so much bigger than either of them realizes.
Let me talk about Dion because this man has ruined me for other fictional characters. He's gruff, controlling, emotionally unavailable in all the ways that should be red flags—and yet somehow completely devoted to protecting Nayana. The line "I'd rather die before ever making you mine—but that doesn't mean anyone else can have you" perfectly captures his internal war between wanting to keep distance and being absolutely feral about her safety. Watching this hardened soldier lose his composure every time Nayana is threatened was both frustrating and addictive.
Their relationship builds beautifully on that enemies-to-allies foundation I can never resist. Nayana doesn't let Dion's brooding intimidate her—she matches his stubbornness with her own, creating this dynamic tension that crackles on every page. The slow burn is expertly crafted, full of banter and heated moments that feel earned rather than rushed. When they finally have moments of vulnerability, the emotional impact hits exactly right because of all that buildup.
The world-building drew me in completely. Two neighboring realms that have cut themselves off from each other, connected by hidden history and magic involving shadows and Fae—it's the kind of mysterious, layered world I love exploring alongside the characters. Villin reveals information naturally through Nayana's eyes rather than dumping exposition, so discoveries feel organic and exciting.
But let's talk about that ending because I'm still recovering. Just when Nayana discovers that Dion is Fae—a revelation that shatters everything she thought she knew—she runs off in fear and confusion. And right when she's about to turn back, possibly to work things out, the King of Merchants appears and kidnaps her before Dion can react. The book ends on that cliffhanger and I genuinely yelled at my book.
What makes this story exceptional isn't just the fantasy elements—it's how Villin handles the themes of autonomy, trauma, and healing. Nayana's journey from trapped victim to someone discovering her own power feels authentic and hard-earned. The found family dynamic with Dion's comrades adds warmth that balances the darker elements perfectly.
The emotional depth here surprised me. This isn't just adventure and romance—it's about breaking free from systems designed to control you, about finding strength you didn't know you had, about choosing your own path even when it's terrifying. Nayana's defiance against her abusive father and society's expectations resonated deeply, especially watching her transform from someone running for her life to someone fighting for what matters.
Dion's character development is equally compelling. Watching his icy facade crack as he realizes how much Nayana means to him, seeing him go absolutely wild with rage and fear when she's taken—it's the kind of protective devotion that destroys me every time when it's earned rather than possessive.
The supporting characters add real depth to the story. Nayana's friend Rewi brings humor and loyalty when things get dark, while Dion's comrades create a found family dynamic that gives the story heart amidst all the danger and political intrigue.
This book tackles heavy themes without flinching—abusive family dynamics, personal freedom, sacrifice—but never loses sight of hope and empowerment. The writing is vivid and gripping; once I started, I couldn't stop. The 675 pages flew by because I was completely invested in these characters and their world.
My only complaint is that Book Two isn't out yet, and that cliffhanger ending has me in emotional purgatory. This is the first in a planned four-book series, and I'm absolutely committed to seeing where this journey goes.
If you love character-driven dark fantasy with complex relationships, morally gray love interests who show devotion through protection, and heroines who refuse to be broken by impossible circumstances, this book will destroy you in the most beautiful way. Just prepare for emotional devastation and possibly some very loud reactions to that ending.
