"Arco's Little House" is a cautionary tale about keeping up with the Joneses. Seeing his neighbors' admiration at the big new house next door, he builds on to his own home, adding everything he sees until he's lost the plot, miserable while everybody else enjoys his sprawling house. In the end, he returns to his cozy little home with relief, realizing it was perfect for HIM. There's something to be said about finding comfort in what you have, knowing what you want, and not bending to please others at your own expense; all this presented with a gentle hand and lovely illustrations that are busy with little Easter eggs and fun details.
I actually thought this book was pretty cute, but I think the audience for it seems a little hard to find. The concept feels fairly adult directed for an early reader, and the text feels a little difficult for the format. I liked it, but I don't think it will be a classic.
