Prohibited is a why choose Dark Romance with an HEA that features three morally gray heroes, a less-than-perfect heroine, and a pitch black villain. This book contains depictions of graphic violence, PTSD, and other dark elements, situations, and themes that some readers may find upsetting. Please read the trigger warnings carefully to make sure that this book is a good fit for you.
dnf @ 52% -- i tried reading this book 2x but it stresses me out too much to finish
to be totally up front, this is not really my kind of book; too much gratuitous sex and violence for me. i think this novel will appeal to a) people who enjoy gritty, cinematic, historical fiction, and b) dark romance lovers
even if you don't typically check TWs, maybe do before reading this one? if i hadn't forced someone to spoil the plot in advance, i probably would have found certain parts more upsetting/disturbing than what i'm typically used to encountering in "Romance".
Set in the 1920’s following the war, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book but I’m really glad I chose to arc read it. Watching Evie’s development from rich housewife to captive and more I couldn’t get enough.
Along with Lindsey and Alex’s relationship, her past with Ryan and then the side views we get from Robert’s I found myself enjoying all the twists and turns we go through during the book.
This is a very smart, intricate, and layered dark romance that is both riveting, chewy, and super hot.
Like I want to add some smart things too but the sexual tension in this book was off the charts, particularly between two of the characters who have been burying their feelings for like a decade.
- I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. -
3 stars As a debut novel, this was quite promising.
(+) - Writing Style: The third-person narrative, which isn't always my preference in romance, was surprisingly engaging. - The Premise: The initial concept was intriguing and captured my attention.
What Could Have Been Better: - Character Dynamics: Unfortunately, the chemistry between the characters didn't quite reach the level I hoped for. - Plot: While the premise was fun, the overall plot lacked a bit of depth. - Romance: The romantic element felt underdeveloped and didn't fully resonate with me.
Despite its shortcomings, the book was an easy and enjoyable read. I'm curious to see what the author has in store for their next work.
The book is a surprisingly captivating romance set against the backdrop of 1920s Prohibition-era America. As someone who has read numerous books with dubious consent and non-consensual content, often finding them shallow or poorly executed, I approached this novel with low expectations. In fact, I was fully expecting to give this a 1-star rating if I didn't like it. However, Thorne's work defied my preconceptions, delivering a thoughtful and engaging narrative.
The story is set during a time when the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol was banned in the United States, leading to the rise of speakeasies and bootlegging. The story is told from the perspective of one woman and three men, creating a very spicy reverse harem dynamic that's both intriguing and well-developed, though Ryan and Evie are the most developed of all characters. Evie, whose journey forms the heart of the story, is a multifaceted character that subverts typical romance tropes. Being vulnerable without being a doormat, definitely helps. As the catalyst for the story's events, Evie's actions and decisions set the narrative in motion, much like the first domino in a chain reaction.
PROHIBITED stands out for its nuanced character interactions, skillfully balancing steamy romance with genuine depth. I was really worried that having too many POVs, they'd all read like one person or feel interchangeable to me. - Because I really hate reading from multiple POVs. But I needn't have worried. Ryan, Alex and Lindsay, the three compelling male characters are very distinct in their personalities and their struggles, with a complex dynamic that felt authentic. Though, I will say having minor characters narrate some chapters cut down on my enjoyment. Also, the ARC had quite a few typos but which I assume is a non-issue for the official release.
PROHIBITED is a pleasant surprise in the dark romance genre. For readers that want heat with heart and historical detail, this novel is a worthy addition to their reading list. Beware the trigger warnings.
Exquisitely written and utterly gripping, this dark romance was a very indulgent read.
It really felt like a lot of care and meticulous research went into crafting this book. The 1920s setting was very immersive; it felt like the story and the characters were built around this decadent decade instead of it being shoehorned in as a gimmick. My favourite element of the story was Thorne's exploration of villainy. Thorne really challenges the reader to consider what they would deem redeemable in an antagonist, and what their absolute limit may be, with nuance and compassion. I really enjoyed the diverse relationship dynamics explored in this book, especially those involving Lindsay (my favourite romance trope is hurt/comfort and I was not disappointed!). These characters leapt off the page with how well-established they were, which added to the suspense and compulsiveness of the story because some of the characters are actually really scary.
Overall, this is one of the best and most unique historical romances I've read in a long while and I would highly recommend it to fans of darker romances and the why-choose genre.

Holy crow, this book was good, and I can't wait to see where else Madeline takes this storyline. And the key for the cover was perfection, excellent choice. Read the book, you'll get it.😉
Prohibition era bootlegging✅️ Why choose✅️ Second chance romance✅️ Abduction✅️ Captivity✅️ Dark romance✅️
Three of our four main characters served in WW1 France and are now home rebuilding their lives. Evelyn/Evie has continued dealing with trauma from the war and gets involved with a villain outside of her marriage. Said villain involves her in a doublecross deal, which makes her the target for the trio who was double crossed. Abducted and held captive, Evie fights the whole time to free herself, only to stay when she is presented with an optimal chance for escape.
Very good spicy scenes between Evie and each man individually, but once you get to the MMF scene, it truly turns up a notch as these two men have had lava bubbling below the surface between them and this time, things erupt.
This line had me kicking my feet and squealing!!!!⬇️ Ryan: Tell me to stop. Tell me you don't want this. That you haven't been dreaming about this for years. You never thought it would happen like this, but you'll take what you can get, won't you?
Awesome job, Madeline! I can't wait to read more!

This is more of a note reminding myself that this book is just not for me. This keeps coming up in historical dark romance recs and the MMFM sounds exciting and would normally have me picking it up to read it.
But I just think it’s a choice, you know, to set a dark romance with all white characters in TULSA of all places in 1920. For a prohibition story, you could’ve chosen anywhere else.
I get it, a lot of dark romance is a type of fantasy and I do read a lot of DARK contemporary romance so I get it. But this is too close to the dark bowels of history for me to ignore the actual events in Tulsa in 1921 (look up the Tulsa Race Massacre if you don’t know). I just don’t care to read a book where I don’t know straight up that the characters in this story wouldn’t have been the instigators and on the wrong side of history. This book seems very white. I’m passing on this.
A 1920 prohibition era why choose with action and just as much spice. Who knew we needed this. It didn't take long for this story to get in full swing of things. Evie finds herself kidnapped by a ghost from her past. But seriously..Evie girl...a crap husband and a even worse boyfriend. Ugh Walter was the absolute worst, but so was her husband.. Evie tries desperately to escape. This girl is pretty creative I give her that. 😅 And when things start heating up between her, Ryan, Alex, and Lindsay..her captors. The tension between them all. So good. When they finally give in....even better.
I really enjoyed this action packed story. The ending...whoooo that ending. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Like the plot is amazing and gripping. And I love how it’s set in the 1920s. It’s such a good plot with twists and drama - one chapter turns into three, and then before you know it you’ve been reading for hours.
It’s a definite slow burn. But I tell you, when you get to the 🌶️, my god is it good. Like mouth watering good.
Such a good book. I’m so bloody glad I had the opportunity to read it before it was published.
Other reviews felt the name changing was confusing but I felt it really flowed. It made so much sense and honestly just added to the multiple layers of the book.
Ok just finally finished this book. I enjoyed how dark it was. I also enjoyed the juggling of all the men. This is my first book set in the prohibition era which was definitely interesting to see.
My few hiccups with this book was that it felt like they were all separate groups not so much a poly couple. I also felt at times I never found how the heroine actually had fallen for the heroes of the story. Also for badass men I feel like these men were not 100% the bad ass men I thought they were going to be. There was also a pov from someone I felt was unnecessary.
Overall if you like slightly historical, reverse harems with mm, and dark romances give this one a go. Also the ending was super sweet. There is another female I seem to be more interested in.
Thank you so much to the author for this arc in exchange for a honest review.
I usually am not a fan of third person pov but I LOVED this book! I loved the characters and how they were so complex (considering there’s quite a few characters haha) and the relationships between everyone as well. A relatively quick read and I can’t wait to see more from this author!
Also Lindsay has my whole heart 🫶🏻
I highly recommend if you like: -Multi pov -Spice -Historical/Prohibition inspired romance -K*nk friendly -Bi rep

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow, this book took me completely by surprise and took me out of a book slump! It was my first historical romance that wasn't regency romance and I think it's need to find more. I enjoyed the unexpected relationships between everyone in this reverse harem and the enemies to lovers trope is always a fave for me. I also want to compliment the author on writing a book that just flew when I was reading it, definitely not feeling the 400+page length at all!
The author sent me an ARC copy of this for free, but this did not influence my review.
This is AMAZING. Set in the 1920 prohibition era I wasn’t sure how’d you bring the dark romance, IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The twist and turns keep me engaged and the smut is like a reward. Evies character development is top tier!
Hard book hangover after reading this. Incredible writing. I couldn't put it down. I was hooked from the first chapter. Unique cast of MMC characters and a villain somehow equal parts sexy and utterly monstrous. Great FMC, too. I loved the bisexual representation. I also never thought I would love a sociopath, but Alex does it for me. If there's something wrong with me, I don't wanna be right.
I can't wait to see more from this author. This book is disturbing and hot af.
I feel like the fact that people are so hard on FMCs has caused a lot of authors to be afraid to take risks with their female characters. Male protagonists can get away with virtually anything but if an FMC even squints at someone the wrong way, suddenly she's unlikable or a bitch. That's why it was so refreshing to read about Evie. There's an idea that strong women aren't allowed to be vulnerable or feel weak, but I am constantly reiterating that sometimes survival can be enough: and that's what Evie is. Caught between two powerful and abusive men, she is doing everything that she can do to survive, given her father's own brand of oppression and her traumatic experiences in the war.
When her lover, Walter Stanley, uses her as a set-up to assassinate someone in his way, she ends up out of the frying pan and into the fire because that someone has two angry half-brothers and a cousin who decide to kidnap Evie and use her to get back at Walter. Those people are the Lockwoods: Alex, Ryan, and Lindsay. And just in case that weren't drama enough, Ryan was her lover when she was young, back when he was the gardener for her childhood estate. Now he hates her, but he still kind of wants her, too. Uh-oh.
PROHIBITED has the vibes of one of those old skool bodice rippers I love, specifically Christine Monson or Natasha Peters: both of them had spirited heroines who went through hell and back, and never stopped surviving. I'm not usually a fan of Why Choose but I liked this book because I liked how distinct every male character felt, and because they all had relationships with each other, it felt like a natural progression for their circle to open to involve Evie. (And by the way, there's no incest: Alex and Ryan are stepbrothers, and Lindsay is Ryan's cousin, who has no blood relation to Alex. So you know, in case you were worried.)
I would have liked more suffering to happen to the two bad guys, especially considering what they did. It kind of felt like they got off easy. Like another review said, I also felt like there were too many Roberts POVs. The one with Walters and Saoirse was chilling and really well done in a way that added to the suspense and stakes (I actually said "holy shit" out loud), but some of them dragged the pacing a bit. BUT overall this was just really well done, dark without feeling like it was trying to shock. Everything felt like it unrolled exactly as it needed to for the sake of the characters and their development arcs and I can't say that about every dark romance I read. This is the second book I've read by Thorne and after this book, I kind of feel like I might have to read every single book they write.
Thanks to the author/publisher for providing me with a copy!
DNF 67%. I just can't get over the non-consensual BDSM. FMC is BRUTALLY abused by her husband and lover on page. She is sexually assaulted by 2/3 MMC's and just straight up abused by one in particular: he cut her with a knife as he was sexually assaulting her (because that's a kink of his), he shoved his fingers in her vagina as she was held down (thus finding a key that FMC had shoved up her vagina in order to escape at a later time), he held her head under water multiple times drowning her AFTER cutting all of her hair off, etc. Now she's currently being fingered by him as he slaps the shit out of her over and over. Like we're seeing the same abuse (OR WORSE) that her husband and ex-lover put her through being done by the MMCs. There is HEAVY degradation and humiliation BDSM happening and none of it was discussed before hand. She did not give consent to any of it before it was done to her. It was just done to her and then the author justified it by writing the FMC feeling turned on by it.
When authors write bad BDSM this way the MMCs are rapists and men who sexually assault women because quite frankly the MMCs don't give a fuck whether or not the FMC consents to it or enjoys it, they're doing it because THEY enjoy it. She's being slapped, choked, spanked, cut with knives, waterboarded and everything in between because THEY enjoy it. If she hated it and felt violated rather than turned on they'd still do it because it's not about what she wants its about what THEY want. THIS IS RAPE and SEXUAL ASSAULT, masked as BDSM!
Actual BDSM culture doesn't work that way, again I see why so many in the BDSM scene hate when authors use BDSM in their stories without any care for the tenants of BDSM. THE biggest component of BDSM is CONSENT! There are safe words and gestures, there are check ins with your partner, there is aftercare. This book has NONE of the safe guards in place that BDSM culture actually has, but then BDSM culture is blamed. When really it's authors taking BDSM out of context and trying to pass off rape and assault as "dark" BDSM.
Like this woman is a survivor of abuse (again that we see on page), why on earth would I root for her to be with men who are equally, if not more, as abusive as the husband and lover she survived? As far as I'm concerned she's just hopping from one abuser to the next. It sucks too because this could have been a good story had the author taken greater care with making everything consensual.

This is the book that I didn't know was missing from my life. It's a why choose, captor/captive, historical dark romance. It follows Evie (FMC), and the 3 MMC's Ryan, Lindsay, and Alex during prohibition in America. Prohibition serves as captivating backdrop with speakeasy's, corrupt cops, bootlegging, and a nation healing from the trauma's of war. The 4 main characters are well developed each brining their own distinct voice to the story. Though my favorite character was the side character Siobhan, I would love for her to get her own story.
This book explores themes of social class and societal expectations, love and loyalty, revenge and redemption, resilience and sacrifice. There is excellent LGBTQ+ representation in this book. The author pushes the reader to consider what in life is worth challenging social norms/pushing boundaries for? Who decides what is right or wrong in a world that is morally gray? Can people truly change? How much of who we are is shaped by outside forces? How do we forgive not only others, but also ourselves? What is the true cost of love?
Overall, Prohibited is a dark romance set against a gritty, high-stakes world where family, loyalty, and morality are often at odds. The book follows characters who navigate complex relationships, each carrying the weight of a challenging past and grappling with personal demons.
The romantic elements center on a love that’s as forbidden as it is undeniable, adding layers of tension and passion as the characters attempt to balance their commitments with an intense desire for personal freedom and connection.
Prohibited dives into dark romance with a realistic touch, making it a compelling story about resilience, transformation, and the pull between love and loyalty in a morally complex environment. It’s a captivating read that balances danger, romance, and spice.
Check the trigger warnings and if you are comfortable with them I highly recommend you read this book. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
First and foremost, Happy Release Day! This is Madeline’s debut novel, and she is coming in with a bang! I went in blind to this dark, why choose, 1920’s Prohibition Era bootlegging romance and I was impressed by the imagery - from the vivid descriptions of speakeasies, to the way of dress, and the corruption of the law; I felt like I stepped back in time.

This story follows Evie, a housewife in a loveless marriage who is having an affair with Walter Stanley, one of the kings of Tulsa’s criminal underworld. Evie thought she would escape her mundane and routine high-society life to have some adventure with the bad boy; donning diamonds and enjoying the sensual pleasures in the gin and smoke filled speakeasies. Unfortunately for Evie, she didn’t know the full extent of Walter’s greed, and how it would drive her to be an accessory to murder.
Evie quickly finds herself at the mercy of Walter’s enemies, three men determined to get their revenge, but the path to claim that revenge is unclear.
Alex is the cold, cunning psychopath with an affinity for bløød and extracting pain with his pleasure.
Lindsey is the cinnamon roll war veteran with a stubborn streak, and the most level headed in the group.
Ryan is Evie’s first love whom she never thought she would see again.
While Walter scours the city looking for Evie, lines begin to blur between Evie and her captors. She was supposed to be their means of revenge, but instead, everyone is questioning their loyalties.
This was a fast-paced, why choose dark romance with an HEA featuring three morally gray heroes and an imperfect heroine. If you enjoy dark romance with a unique setting, give this a shot!
This book intrigued me first and foremost because I love 1920s Era stories and shows, so it instantly had me hooked with its Peaky Blinder vibe. The plot was something new to me, unintentional betrayal which leads to being taken and fighting for your life as well as your the men that took you. I will admit some moments between our FMC and these men seemed a bit close to unforgivable for me, but our FMC has a bigger heart than I do. It wrapped up nicely, but I felt there was some questions still with the ending wrap up. I did throughly enjoy this story and it has been so fun to read. Now this story is why-choose, with MM, and each of the men are vastly different.
Alex, I hate to say I found him the least likeable. He did some pretty nasty things to our FMC and it felt like he mostly just lusted after her because his men did. There was never a redeeming moment between him and FMC which is probably why I feel less genuine about their connection. He is harsh and seems emotionless, but we do see a soft side here and there, but unfortunately it isn't really pointed at Evie until the end.
Lindsay, is our soft boy and I absolutely loved him. Sure he falls hard and fast. But I found it admirable that he was willing to go against his love to stand up for what he believed and felt was right, even if it meant harsh punishment for him. The way he showed true kindness to Evie, had my heart in a chokehold.
Ryan, the complicated one. If it wasn't for his stubbornness, he probably would have been my favorite. The way he was willing to risk his own self to keep Evie safe made me tear up. He worked according to the pain and rage he was feeling and he let it blind him from the truth. I will admit, it didn't help having Alex in his ear, challenging him every time he started having rational thoughts.
Ready for a wild ride into the sultry, shadowy world of 1920s Tulsa? Buckle up, because this tale is a steamy cocktail of danger, desire, and deliciously dark twists! Our heroine, Evie, is on the hunt for a thrill, and boy, does she find it when she dives headfirst into a heated affair with one of the city's notorious crime lords.
But what starts as an escape filled with diamonds and illicit rendezvous turns into a twisted game of cat and mouse. Betrayal is the name of the game, and suddenly, Evie finds herself caught in a perilous web spun by three captivating men, each more dangerous than the last. There’s a chilling mastermind with a taste for chaos, a rugged war hero who’s got a heart of gold (and a stubborn streak), and the first love who could turn her world upside down all over again. Talk about complicated!
As Evie navigates this treacherous love triangle—scratch that, love square—the stakes get higher and the passion becomes palpable. Sparks fly and loyalties are tested as she grapples with her feelings for her captors while trying to escape a web of revenge that could cost her everything.
Get ready for a wild mix of steamy scenes, heart-pounding suspense, and characters who are as morally gray as they are irresistible. This book is a rollercoaster of passion and peril that will leave you breathless and craving more! If you’re in the mood for a dark romance that’s heavy on the spice and even heavier on the drama, you won’t want to miss this intoxicating tale. Grab your favorite drink and prepare for a journey filled with sin and seduction—you’re in for a treat!
Prohibited by Madeline Thorne is a deliciously twisted, slow-burn romance set in the smoky, dangerous world of 1920s Tulsa, and it completely took me by surprise in the best possible way. The story is a perfect blend of dark intrigue, forbidden romance, and intense character dynamics that kept me hooked from start to finish.
What truly stood out to me was the world-building. Thorne does an exceptional job of setting the scene in 1920s Tulsa, capturing the vibrant, gritty atmosphere of the era, from the smokey speakeasies to the criminal underworld, and weaving it seamlessly into the plot. The setting felt almost like a character in itself, adding layers of tension and excitement as the story progressed.
The three men who become entangled in Evie’s fate are incredibly complex and distinct. You have the cold, calculating psychopath, the cinnamon roll war veteran with a heart of gold (and a stubborn streak), and the first love she never expected to see again. Their personalities clash and mesh in ways that make for a compelling, messy, and steamy dynamic. I appreciated how each character brought something unique to the table, and their evolving relationships with Evie felt both unpredictable and electric. The slow-burn romance between her and her captors was fraught with tension, and I loved watching them question their loyalties as passions and secrets came to the surface.
The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that at times the pacing felt a little uneven, particularly in the middle of the book. There were moments where the tension between characters could have been ramped up a little more, but that’s a minor issue in an otherwise gripping story.
⁝ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 - 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲 ⁝ ╰┈➤ It is a super interesting book! First of all, remember '𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅' is a Why Choose Dark Romance so proceed with caution and always check the TW.
In my personal opinion, I don't really like Why Choose (too many love interest stress me haha) and I DO NOT LIKE Step Siblings Trope but I really wanted to give it a try with this book. So my review will be very heavilly influenced by that!⚠️
The characters and scenes were really well written, a third person narration that lets you see all the emotions and thoughs the characters my have. Plus, it has bisexual representation!🏳️🌈
Still, I struggled to follow the protagonists and was kinda difficult to form bonds with them. Again, this is because I -personally- prefer less points of view. One or dual pov is my goes to, so this was a bit of a new thing for me! And I liked how the scenes progresses through the whole book. As I said, really well written. Lived the description, you can't get lost in it and it pretty clear how everything works.
If you like Why Choose themed books, this is obviously your book. It has so well twisted +18 scenes that you will have so much fun reading it. The open relation ship was really cute, and without any spoilers, the ending was sweet!
To be my first Why Choose, I think I chose well. Maybe I give it another try on the future thanks to '𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅''. So glad to have received an arc from this amazing author!

“I remember when you came to live with us,” Alex said in that same almost inaudible voice. You were the most beautiful thing i had ever seen. You are still the most beautiful thing i have ever seen.”
Ooooh I’m so thankful i got to read an arc of this book! I’m not typically one to reach for books with MM scenes, but this one was written well! 🫣🤩 I loved the relationships between the characters and i loved the mafia vibes, enemies to lovers, second chance tropes! Plus - the spice 🫣🌶️🥵 It’s got MF, MM, MMF, & MMFM. 🫣
Quick Synopsis: Evie is in a horrible marriage and she seems the comfort of one of the biggest “underground criminals” in the area. She quickly realizes how much she detests being associated with him, but things escalate and next thing she knows she’s involved in something she doesn’t want to be a part of. She catches the attention of her old flame, Ryan, his cousin Lindsay, and his “step brother” Alex. These men are 🔪 R U T H L E S S 🔪 and they decide that kidnapping and killing her is the best revenge on not just Evie, but her criminal underworld lover 🫣🔪🖤 Are Ryan, Lindsay & Alex reallllly as ruthless as they say they are? Or does Evie win them over and earn a place in their hearts? You HAVE to read this to see what happens!
*Why Choose *Historical *Multi-3rd-PoV *Darker Aspects *Prohibition Era *Mobsters *Revenge *Captivity *Established Harem (3) *includes MM *Slower Burn *Standalone Something Different I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this book having not read a historical romance why choose but I generally enjoyed it 😀 Our FMC Evie is caught in the crossfire thanks to a shady lover causing some huge issues, in an act of revenge three brothers-in-arms capture her! Evie is a tenacious character dragged into a revenge plot and she’s not about to go down without a fight - there are some TWs so do check. Despite proclaiming to hate her lines begin to blur for her captives, Ryan cannot decide where his feelings should lie after everything they’ve been through, Lindsay comes across as the sweeter one although there’s definitely a burning there, and Alex…yeah they best way to describe him…psycho 😅 as the plot develops their connection grows, and so do the so it scenes (these are slower to come to the group ones but when they do 🔥🔥) the one thing is truffled with was the various different characters PoVs we get - it isn’t just the 4 main characters but side ones too, which did create a bit of confusion. But overall as a new to me author I would read more in this world 😃
Wow, just wow! "Prohibited" is an absolute gem of a book that I could not put down! From the very first page, I was drawn into the world of 1920s Prohibition-era America, where the stakes are high, and the characters are even more intense.
The story follows Evelyn (Evie), a woman grappling with her traumatic past and seeking solace in a dangerous affair. Her entanglement with mobster, Walter Stanley, leads to a double-cross that puts her directly in the crosshairs of three men seeking revenge. The plot is rich and layered which makes it a thrilling ride from start to finish.
Evie's character is deep and relatable; she fights fiercely for her freedom while also dealing with the choices she made in the past. The dynamics between Evie and her captors are electrifying, especially during the steamy scenes. The MMF moments elevate the heat and relieve the deep-seated tension between the men and Evie that simmers throughout the story.
Thorne's ability to weave complex emotions and intense relationships together is nothing short of masterful. This book is a thoughtful exploration of love, revenge, and redemption, all set against a beautifully crafted historical backdrop. If you're a fan of dark romance with depth and a twist of danger, "Prohibited" is an absolute must-read!
This was such a good book, surprising in a good way and a new author for me.
Set in the 1920's prohibition era, it follows Evie, a woman who comes from a wealthy background, but the more you read, the more you realise how unfortunate her life is. Married to Linus, a rich oil industry spoilt man, who wasn't interested in her and cheated from the start of their marriage. Evie starts an affair with Walter, a vicious gangster who abuses her, but she can't get away from him.
She is forced into a situation which finds her being kidnapped by a rival gang, who one of the leaders is her first love, Ryan. The story brings in Alex, another leader and Lindsay, Ryan's cousin and Alex's lover.
So much more occurs in this enthralling, well written, why choose book. You feel for Evie throughout and realise that there is so much more to her. The relationship growth between all the characters is so well executed, and I particularly liked that there was multiple POVs.
My only gripes would be, I wanted more information on Etienne, and what happened with Walter.......And..... you will have to read the rest to find out, but it was oh so so good! 😉
I received an Advanced Copy from Book Sirens, and it was my pleasure to offer an honest review.
This was a captivating exploration of a couple tropes that I love; enemies to lovers and why choose?. It’s full of love, loss, rebellion, a strong FMC and so much more. I love a good dark romance and this was really good. I don’t typically like second chance but I’m so glad I read this!
The authors ability to create multi dimensional characters is one of the books strongest points. Each character is intricately crafted, all with their own struggles, desires and personal battles. I loved seeing how differently Evie interacted with each man; Ryan, Alex and Lindsay. The emotional depth of the relationships portrayed adds a layer of complexity that keeps you invested to see what happens next.
However, the pacing can be a bit uneven sometimes, it took me a bit to get into it and also during the middle when the plot seemed to slow down a little. I still really enjoyed the story, I just definitely prefer faster paced books. With that being said, the writing style has vivid descriptions and touching dialogue that enhance the reading experience which made it hard to stop reading when there was more tense situations.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read. If you like the tropes I mentioned above and also dubcon, high spice and bisexual rep, you will love this.
Prohibited really took me by surprise. I went into it expecting an intense read, but I didn’t realize how deeply I’d get pulled into the lives of these characters. They’re so flawed, so messy, and somehow you end up rooting for them even when you’re not sure you should be. Madeline has this way of writing that feels so real—it’s raw, a little gritty, and just hits all the right emotional notes.
I found myself thinking about the characters long after I’d put the book down, wondering what I would do in their place, and sometimes even wanting to give them a good shake! There’s a dark, complex vibe to the story, and it’s full of twists that make you question who you can trust. It’s one of those books that makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters, tangled up in their world.
Sure, there were a few slow parts, and I did wish for more detail in certain areas, but honestly? It didn’t take away from my enjoyment. The way she dives into the characters’ minds made up for any minor flaws.
If you’re someone who loves character-driven stories with a dark edge, I’d definitely recommend Prohibited. It’s one of those reads that sticks with you and makes you think. I’m so glad I picked it up, and I can’t wait to see what Madeline does next.
The Prohibition era was an intriguing time period, so that and the why choose is what drew me to this book. Madeline wove an engrossing tale of deception, revenge, and familial bonds. The story follows Evelyn “Evie” Colter rich housewife and mistress to one of the kings of Tulsa’s criminal underworld, and three of said king’s enemies, Ryan Lockwood, Lindsay Lockwood, and Alex Laurent. Whoooo! What a wild ride this was.
Evie was navigating through treacherous waters after getting in deep into something she had no business being in. My heart hurt for her for the bad decisions that led her to her current situation and feeling like her life was no longer her own. Evie displayed a relatable vulnerability but had a strength and determination that guided her through the mess she had made for herself. I enjoyed her redemption arc and seeing her come into her own.
Ryan, Lindsay, and Alex! These three morally grey heroes had loyalty in common, but each stood out with their distinct personalities. I loved seeing each of them fall and, in one case, fall again for Evie. They were the forbidden fruit, and Evie was all too willing to have a taste.
Prohibited was a dark and suspenseful romance with just the right amount of spice. The setting of the book was the perfect backdrop for the “illicitness” of the various relationships in the story. This book is perfect for those who love dark romance and also enjoy a bit of historical fiction.
