I have to stop reading free romance novellas/short stories. They're never satisfying. There's not enough plot, you never get to know the characters well enough, and the relationship goes from 0 to sex in an instant.

Maisey Yates' Take Me, part of Harlequin's Fifth Avenue Trilogy, is bothersome because it comes under the Harlequin Presents banner and this is not an HP. If this book is representative of what the Harlequin Presents line has become, I'm obviously out of the loop and don't want anything to do with them. I'll stick to my books from the mid-1970's to early-2000's and that’s it.

***ETA*** I know this novella isn't technically a numbered Harlequin Presents and neither are the books in the series. Regardless, the version of this e-book I have clearly stated Harlequin Presents on the cover as did the others, which are full-length novels published under the HP name. If I pick up an HP, I expect to read an HP, not a Harlequin Blaze.***

I realize times have changed and romance readers want a lot more steam in their books. But to my knowledge, there are 20+ category lines in the Harlequin family, so there should be plenty of variety for all romance readers.

Take Me actually stated rather promising. College student Sydney is attending a glamorous party with Travis, her BFF, a horn-dog galore, who’s secretly loved Sydney for years but has kept his banging strictly to other chicks. Then a tragedy occurs at the party when Sydney’s other bestie, Sarah, commits suicide by throwing herself out a window. Travis whisks Sydney away from the party, they engage in some comfort sex and their true feelings come to light.

Hold on a minute…so Sydney’s good friend kills herself, she doesn’t stick around to make sure the paramedics take the body away, she doesn’t talk to the cops, nevertheless, she’s so overcome with grief that she just needs to bang! Look, I know intense lovemaking can bring comfort after a tragic event, but this was ridiculous and made the heroine look like a callous jerk.

Now on to the sex and cursing... Before anyone thinks I am a stick-in-the-mud, pearl-clutching prude, I'll let you know that the "real me" curses like a sailor who’s been off at sea for years. When I'm angry, I make vulgar Ricky from the “Trailer Park Boys” sound like an erudite college graduate (and he barely passed his Grade 10). :) I am not easily offended by sex or violence or foul language, when it's in its appropriate venue. However, foul as I can be, I have "standards." I don't curse in front of little kids. I also don’t think that ultra-graphic sex scenes and curse words work in a Presents. Words repeated over again like: There's detailed . Not implied, not subtly described, but in full detail, as would be in an erotic novel.

I don’t read hardcore erotica, but that doesn't mean I'm averse to steamy sizzle in my romances. I love bodice rippers, for goodness’ sake! I enjoy a variety of heroines from young, inexperienced virgins to older women with many lovers in their pasts. One of my favorite HP authors is Miranda Lee, whose sexy stories guarantee I’ll be fanning myself off after reading each one. She employs racy scenes and even bits of kink, usually hinting at sexual acts more than describing them in explicit detail. And she utilizes “classy” language. I expect a certain quality when I read a Harlequin Presents. I do not expect to pick a Blaze marketed as an HP. I do not expect a New Adult novel or a Chick-Lit.

Sydney and Travis are longtime friends, both 22-year-old in university planning ahead for major careers. They have no time for intense relationships and are hesitant to enter a lasting commitment. It’s nice that the epilogue shows them together ten years later, both having made compromises to make a working family. I like that. But what came before it doesn’t make up for a sweet ending.

I see this freebie novella has some mixed ratings, still mostly positive reviews. I know I’m an old fart at 37, and I’ve been reading HPs longer than some of the newer readers have been alive. Maybe that’s what readers want in an HP: not just more sex, but graphic sex, with “talk-dirty-to-me” language.” Exotic locales, jet-setting heroes, crazy Cinderella storylines aren’t enough anymore. To me, though, it’s like a juicy, thick piece of porterhouse with a big pile of freshly-made crème brulée on top. On their own, those two elements make for a satisfying meal. Sloshed together, it tastes awful, something you’d push away and say, “What the heck was the chef thinking?” There is a time and a place for each one of these things, but not all together. At least not for me in an HP. :(

This review is almost as long as the novella. It took me longer to write this than it did to read Take Me. But it was so disappointing, even for a short story. I have no desire to read the rest of the books in Yates’ “Fifth Avenue” series if this novella was indicative of things to come. Heck, I’m not sure I want to read any modern HPs after this one.

Travis Beringer and Sydney Davis have been best friends since they were 12-years old. When he takes her to the annual Treffen Christmas party, a catastrophic event occurs that forces them to confront their true feelings.

This short novella sets up the series while focusing on the catalyst, Travis, and his best friend Sydney's relationship. Things heated up a bit quickly before we really get to know either of the characters. However, that was later remedied but it's always tough for me to be emotionally invested before knowing the characters in any meaningful way. I was impressed, though, that I got there by the end. And, the epilogue is oddly appealing. Bottom line, I think this novella did it's job, especially as all of the major characters were introduced.

Not really essential to the series so no need to rush and get it.... Having said that it was a nice little story that would have been much better if it had been a full story giving us a bit more history between them rather than just telling us, or us having to assume what had happened between them over the years.

This is a great little intro to the Fifth Avenue Series. Travis and Sydney are relatively young, ambitious and at the wrong time of their lives to get serious with each other.

When Sarah, Sydney's college room-mate commits suicide at a party surrounded by her work colleagues, including her boss Jason Treffen, it triggers a chain of events both short and long.

For Sydney, the loss of her friend brings her together with her best friend from childhood Travis. They've been skirting around each other for years, afraid of ruining the friendship.

When Sydney asks her to stay with her, neither in the right space to realise just where it might lead.

*fans self* My first sixty-niner with this author. Um...moving on.

The next day....

So *brightly* we have an epilogue. And that takes us straight into Avenge Me...the first in the trilogy that shows us the long term consequences of that night.

What is going on here? I really don't want to read about college kids hooking up in my HP's and these two crazy cats were both only 22.
I was slightly baffled that they both just walked away from what was basically a crime scene. I'm pretty sure if someone dies at a party the police want to interview everyone there to establish "stuff" but no these 2 just mosey on out like its normal!!! WTH?
H was adorable and I really felt for him when he had his love thrown back in his face the h loses tons of stars for rejecting our cute rich boy H who would do anything for her, literally anything including offering to remove body parts. Bless his heart.

I was curious about the series so I downloaded this prequel freebie. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I didn't care about Travis or Sydney and the sex seemed to happen way too fast. It felt as if I needed to have already read the series even though this is a prequel. I read the first 35 percent, then skimmed until 69 percent at which point I gave up. I couldn't relate to either of them and I didn't give a damn about either of them.

Watch out world the men from Fifth Avenue have arrived! In the prequel to what is definitely one of the best series ever released author Maisey Yates takes us into the exclusive world of New York's scandalous elite where everything is about to change.

Take me tells of Travis Beringer, as the son of a high-powered attorney Travis has never wanted for anything except the elusive Sydney Davis.

But everything changes in a heartbeat with the shocking death of her roommate, Sarah Michaels, and suddenly Sydney is in his arms seeking oblivion. Talk about a lucky break or is that a deadly break?

Travis and Sydney indulge in every single erotic fantasy they have fought against for so long, but what will happen when tomorrow comes? Will it still be a 'let's get down and dirty' fun fest or will reality rear it's ugly head and send the lovers in a down ward spiral neither one is prepared to face?

What a fantastic start to the series this was! The author really grabbed my attention and held it all the away through, which sadly does not always happen with most prequel's. All they tend to do is get you interested in the rest of the series but the actual characters that takes you in the world of the series is mostly there then just abruptly fades in order to make room for the rest of the characters in the other books of the series. This usually leaves me feeling empty and totally let down, and telling myself that I should have started with the first book and not have bothered with the prequel,.

I was more than happy that this was not the case in this prequel. The author went deep with the emotions of the characters and really let their tale of romance play out very nicely.

Highly recommended for all fans of romance and for those of us who are very addicted to series related reads, a very awesome first look into the Fifth Avenue world, where scandal, plans, power and money is at the top of the list to win the game!

As a stand alone story, this one didn't work. I would have preferred to see more of the history between Travis Beringer and Sydney Davis rather than just being told they grew up together. And really, why wasn't Sydney questioned? She was a friend and former roommate, the police should have had SOME questions for her. What Take Me did well was set up the main event for the series and provide some background. It will be interesting to see if Travis or Sydney show up in future books. Great start to the Fifth Avenue series. Two people who have been friends forever were brought together beyond that over the death of their friend. Maisey packed a lot of emotional kick into a short story, causing two people to face up to their fears and hidden feelings for each other. Their story starts at the beginning that will be followed by three other books - Avenge me, Scandalise me, Expose me, which are set ten years later down the track. A fallout from what happened at the beginning of this book. Avenge me is another book written by Maisey. The first after this prequel.

Pretty good. It’s mostly sex scenes and sweet talk. Not much plot.

Kind of gushy-mushy toward the end with a lot of I love you’s – take over my whole soul -- I love you with all of myself. But it’s ok if that’s your mood. It’s a short novella (75 pages). It’s what I expect from Harlequin Presents.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 75 pages. Swearing language: strong, but not often used. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 3. Setting: 2004 and 2014 New York. Copyright: 2014. Genre: contemporary romance.

Shirts do not have LAPELS!!!

That is just one of the many stupid things repeated in this novella!

Who cares about either of these people? Doesn't anyone care that their best friend is dead? Don't the police want to talk to people who were at the party? How long must your arms and thigh bones be to be on your hands and knees giving a guy a blow job while he is standing up? Why didn't anyone drown in the shower? Argh!!!!

The book was really crappy in my opinion. It was not well thought of and there wasn't much story going on in the book, just Travis and Sydney banging each other while they drown in lust and grief.

I wasn't that impressed with this book. There wasn't much plot to it, as it mainly framed the sexual encounter. This made it impossible to form a good connection with the main characters. Granted, this was a prequel story, but there were too many unanswered questions for my tastes. What this book did do for me was introduce me to the author's writing style, which I found enjoyable and interesting. While I doubt I will finish this particular series, I am not adverse to reading more by the author.

This is a prequel to a 3 story book series by different authors. There's only 5 chapters & an epilogue. Very short. The first chapter sets up the series by the H/h attending a party given by a sex predator senator. Their friend seemingly commits suicide by jumping off a building. The rest of the chapters are the H/h having wild sex & talking about their relationship. The epilogue sets up the series with 3 hunky guys who want to right a wrong. One of whom is the sex predator senator's son.
Not really feeling the whole thing.

The whole thing felt stilted and gave the impression that the author had no idea how the glamorous high life in New York - or among elite college students, or at law firms - works. Harlequin Presents are often unrealistic, but they are at least super-glamorous while they're doing it; this, with its college students worrying about post-graduation jobs and its "pro bono law firm" belonging to another law firm (uh... no), didn't fit the bill.

no interesting storyline

I can’t say it’s a bad book but for me i just didn’t find it that good of a book. Quick summary, the book started with what you think is a story line yet it wasn’t then went to sex then about their feelings then sex again then to married to the end of book. I don’t mind sex in books but no interesting storyline. Seemed that fast. I guess there is another book but I’m save my time.

I didn't like it. Story was too short to get to know or really care about the characters. I did like the epilogue and the direction their life took them, I just wish story had more depth and had gotten to know characters better. P.

I've decided to do this review as a full series review because the individual books did not give me so much problems as the series as a whole.
My biggest problem with the trilogy (but not really a trilogy is it, because there are 4 books to the whole story) is that it was SO anti-climatic by the end, I was almost sorry I spent the better part of a week invested in it. These books have an underlining theme ... to avenge the death of their friend. And each individual book, the hero takes a part in this 'take-down'. But when you finish with book four, you don't get to LIVE any of what happens to the man responsible for their friend's death. You have to assume that he is 'destroyed' and I have a very hard time with that. Why you ask....because this man is a gazillionare with connections so powerful that even I had trouble believing he would really pay for Sarah's (friend in question) death! As a matter a fact, the next to last paragraph on the Expose Me (book #4) actually states "They were both talking about Treffen and what would happen next ...." (Treffen being the psycho gazillionare responsible for Sarah's death) and i'm all like .... WAIT WAIT WAIT, I don't get to know? Are you kidding me?!?!
The other problem I had with the series as a whole was that Sydney and Travis (from Take Me) were dropped from the stories as soon as their short story ended. Sydney was Sarah's best friend and Travis was the one that got 'the letter' first with the suspicions and accusations about Treffen. Yet not one single appearance by them in any of the 'trilogy'. That was odd to me.
Now on to what was good :)
Take Me (book .5): very good set up for the 'suspense' of the trilogy. it was short, yes, but because sydney and travis had been friends since childhood, there really was no need for relationship development. the story was perfect as it was.
Avenge Me (book 1): Austin (Treffen's son and good friend of Sarah's) is our hero and Katy (Sarah's sister) is our heroine. Neither knows about the who the other is and when they meet, the chemistry is explosive. Austin has been estranged from his father for the last 10 years (since Sarah's death) not because he knew of his father's involvement, but more because he had suspicions and it made him sick. Katy (after a long struggle to get her life in order), has been trying to get dirt on Treffen for a while. After the two meet and put their suspicions together, Austin decides his role in the take down of his father will be to help his mother divorce his father and take him for all he's got. That is the gist of book one. But there is a whole lot of story in between that I am obviously not sharing because them why buy the book, right?! :)
Scandalize Me (book 2): Hunter (Sarah's ex boyfriend and good friend) is our hero and Zoe (another of Treffen's victims) is our heroine. Zoe is a PR agent and Hunter is a washed out ex-football player and gazillionare himself. Zoe seeks out Hunter as a client because she knows of his past relationship with Sarah and wants to use him to take down Treffen. Little do they BOTH know that they have that common goal even before they meet. And so as they build their very explosive relationship (scorching hot) they plot together...Aaaaand that's enough detail from me lol If you want more, read the book....it's worth it!
Expose Me (book 3): Alex (Sarah's good friend and head of a global media empire) is our hero and Chelsea (famous talk-show host) is our heroine. Chelsea host a very popular daytime TV talk-show and has Treffen on her schedule to be interviewed live on her show. When Alex's finds out, he seeks her out in order to convince her to use her interview as the last nail in Treffen's coffin and out him on live television. These two have even more explosive chemistry than any other couple in this series! Good Lord, I was glued to every page! Chelsea's back story was SO heart-wrenching and poor Alex's reactions were just so typical for a man, you just can't help but feel sorry for him! This was by far my favorite book of the trilogy, with Scandalize Me coming a very close second!

Even tho I had a HUGE problem with how the take-down of Jason Treffen ended, all these books rate very high in their individual romantic stories!

A background introduction, Take Me by Maisey Yates is a very brief look at the past of two of the main characters in the Fifth Avenue series. Travis and Sydney have been best friends since they were children, both driven to succeed, but having little success in the area of love until one harsh and heartbreaking event changes their lives forever. Knowing life was precious; these two cling to each other in passion, but was it worth risking their friendship? What will the future bring for them?

Very short, barely skimming the surface of the personalities of the main characters, there is grief induced sexual encounters that give them hope for life and possibly a future together. Ms. Yates started off with a dramatic hook, but I wish there had been a few more pages to get to know and be able to relate to Sydney and Travis and their connection.
