Detective Sergeant Scott Backer could not hide his surprise. Grandson? He was pretty sure that Mrs. Carr was not fifteen-year-old Shaye's gran, as they both wanted him to believe. But for now, he would play along with them. What were they hiding? Who was Shaye, and why was he living with this elderly lady?
I was only going to read one chapter but I found myself hooked.
Shaye has noticed how generous Mrs Carr is to the neighbours. Surely she wouldn't mind if he used her spare bedroom at night? And if he took the crusts from her bin? And a spoonful of casserole?
He breaks into her house late one freezing night, just for shelter from the elements. The next night he finds a container of casserole in the bin. The night after that, there are fresh sandwiches and a cupcake. He starts to be concerned. Is she not feeling well?
The fourth night it's so cold and rainy he can't wait until an hour after the lights go out. He takes the risk and breaks in just minutes after Mrs Carr has retired. He's hardly inside the window when he's confronted by the old lady. It turns out she's known he was there from the beginning.
So begins the relationship between a homeless teenage boy and an old woman who has given up on living after her husband died. A relationship that is plenty suspicious according to Detective Scott Backer, as well as Mrs Carr's children.
Except that Mrs Carr realises Shaye is the best thing that's happened to her since her husband died. He protects her during a home invasion, he reactivates her love of swimming, he teaches her how to use email.
But there's just one problem: someone is trying to frame Shaye as a thief. And someone is trying to kill him.
Operation Uniform Echo (Unlawful Entry) is book five in DJ Stutley’s “Operation” series. Old Mrs Carr is smart and feisty, and it only takes her two days to realise someone is sleeping in her spare room, despite the fact that young Shaye is meticulous in the way he leaves the room tidy before he leaves for school each day. On the fourth night, Shaye, soaked to the skin from a sudden downpour, climbs through the window of his sanctuary and he realises he is not alone. From the first page to the last, the story escalates from one exciting moment to another and like the previous four books, does not disappoint.
